Oopsies. Alcaraz got whooped. Sinner was up a break in the 1st set too, so it could have been straight sets for Sinner.
Drove me crazy watching it happen over and over. Alcaraz would hit a serve to the corner, Sinner would hit a defensive shot back near the baseline, and Alcaraz wouldn't move his feet only to hit a wimpy short-hop wrist flick back, giving Sinner an easy advantage in the rally. Happened over and over.

Tennis will never have that golden age again. Wished I would've paid more attention to it all. 3 very different, incredible athletes, all going at it hard in their prime. It's crazy when you think about it, especially in an individual sport.
And now these two show up? They are both no joke. But the longevity the others displayed? We'll see if either can match that. They are good for each other, keep pushing it, and that part's important.
But I still feel like tennis is in a precarious place nowadays. These two are carrying a big torch right now. Good for them but the longevity of the greats before them? I'll believe that when I see it.

Yeah, my wife is an Alcaraz fan and can’t understand why I rooted for Sinner. Of the two, Alcaraz is more likable and exciting, but I really just want somebody else to have a decent chance at winning. It would be even better for a couple others to join the mix, though seems like a two-man show for the foreseeable future.

He’s actually my favorite player. Awkward, but cerebral, and funny. Definitely appears to be in decline.

She got a pic with Raducanu (shes purty) and watched her practice serving and returning serve. Coco/Jared was in the gym the whole time. Monfils and felix aurer-etc were working with their coaches too.

Any thoughts on the revamped mixed doubles this year?
basically invite only for the big singles stars- 16 pairs- this week, to allow them to play, short format (4 game sets, no ad... similar format to a lot of lower level youth tournaments floppinha plays in) over 2 or 3 days with a big cash prize.
I think only last years winners were brought in, of all the mixed doubles specialists, which brought the complaint that the part timer rich singles players were being given the opportunity to win the big cash prize instead of those specialists. turns out, last years winners won today- beating Iga and Ruud.

I can understand it’s annoying, at the minimum, to the mixed specialists, but probably better for the fans, who ultimately are paying the bills.
Not following it, do the dedicated doubles people generally destroy the star coupled?

Grounds pass is the way to go, late first week 2nd/3rd round. Ashe is too huge, unless you pay a lot for close seats.

My wife and daughter were in London this summer and we looked into it. what i thought was you could only get tix by getting there early in the am and waiting on queue. So- easy and cheap if you have the time and patience to do that. Didnt hear anything about an after market since tickets were primarily bought day of.

Camp on the soccer field adjacent to the grounds. Wait in queue the next day. Buy tickets for face value. Excellent seats, with a decent chance at center court.
So yes, you need to allocate extra time, one day. And camp. But it was really fun, and the queue moved quickly. And exponentially cheaper than purchasing the tickets through other avenues.
I’m super impatient, and wasn’t bothered at all by the process. I guess camping would be a deal breaker for some, but it’s hardly roughing it.
ETA We saw Berdych defeat Federer on Centre Court in QF, and Serena beat someone (can’t recall).

Federer is my wife’s favorite player, and seeing him play on Centre Court (even losing) was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
People burn vacation days “relaxing” all the time, and I’ve waited longer in lines for the movies. You basically arrive, get a number to establish your place in the queue, the set up camp anywhere on the field. We chatted with other fans from around the world, played board games, and ate snacks from the surrounding vendors during the “wasted” day. The next morning, the staff awakens you, organize the queue, and the tickets are purchased - the whole process took a little over an hour.

tbh- if my daughter hadn't been in an art program that lasted all day their entire stay, I'd have made sure they tried to get there one day and just park it in line and hope for the best... why not?
I assume the 1 hour part was once the queue forms and moves. because... you were there the evening before, which (working abacus furiously) seems like more than 1 hour.

man... Coco was not playing well at the end of that 3rd set. looked tentative hitting and serving the ball. thankfully she moves so well, the opponent didn't have much threat other than Coco's many unforced errors and double faults. but a wins a win... on to the 2nd round.

Yes, although you weren’t supposed to leave for an extended time from the grounds once you set up camp, we weren’t waiting in line the day prior to the queue. We left a half dozen times during the “wasted” day, for about an hour or so, to get food, walk around, etc.

I did not know about this rule. But now that I do, I can safely say it is completely stupid. And then to get pissed off at your opponent for not following a stupid unwritten rule? That is supremely idiotic.

There was just a net cord kerfuffle at wimbledon, iirc. I agree- its a silly thing to get panty-bunched over, but its still a common courtesy and very common. Even at youth level, the second it hits the net and goes over, that player gives an apologetic wave when the play is over.
Fwiw, the angry player also got angry that Toensend spent time warming up from the service line, and not back at the baseline. Angry losers gonna angry.

I think Coco has a new coach right before the Open? She looked out of sorts from Round 1. And while there were moments when all of a sudden she finally has a serve as a weapon, the rest of the time it was self inficted. Had the look of somebody trying too many new things too soon, with none of them quite working out.
Otoh, Very cool to see Osaka playing this well again.
And freaking Sinner...i thought that was going to be a nailbiter match against Bublek, not the bloodbath it was.

Sounds like both were good matches. Was hoping for an all US final, but Saba has been fantastic.
After the wimbledon final bagel bloodbath, it was cool for Anisimova to straight set Iga last round. And now Osaka. Hope the final vs Saba is better than that wimbledon one.

Anisimova brought the sledgehammer on her backhand. Naomi was ripping the ball as well. Great hitting clinic by both of them.
Anisimova certainly has the power to exchange fire with Sabalenka.
Her service game is very shaky though and I expect Sabalenka to exploit her forehand in rallies.
Sabalenka can go on tilt at any moment though.

thanks- that's a crazy stat... never would've guessed it (wimbledon win not withstanding).
Crazy thing is Joker was 3rd best player in the world this year but has seemingly no chance of beating Sinner or Alcaraz

Even though he won, didn’t look great in QF, imo. Seemed tired.
His game has always been predicated on attrition, to some extent. But Alcaraz and Sinner are both too good defensively, such that he won’t consistently win long rallies. Plus they hit winners all over the court.

Aussie Open is Djoker’s best chance. I think he’ll retire, if he doesn’t win the next one.
