Texans to run 46 (1 Viewer)

According to Lance Zierlein of the Houston Chronicle and 1560 The Game, the Texans will run some 46 defense this season. The Monday night game against the Vikings might be indicative of the potential benefit for Ryans and the Texans as the scheme should free up Ryans to make more plays.

Here is a link to my football newsletter which has a "film session" section towards the bottom where I take a look at the Texans use of the "46 defense".

One of the reasons that they utilize it, according to a team insider I spoke with, is because Gary Kubiak has had the Texans practice against that front since it is the hardest defense for zone teams to run against. I guess the Texans have decided to incorporate it more often now since more and more teams are including zone packages into their running game.

There is a TON of college football in the newsletter this week but obviously I'll have more pro football info once next week starts. I hope you enjoy the look at the 46.

Awesome link.

There are a lot of ways to run a 46, and while it's always been a solid run defense, the images in the link are skewed even more toward defending the run, with Mario Williams playing one of the strong side spots that often went to an OLB or SS in Buddy Ryan's looks.

The Cowboys have been doing a little of this with their nickel, more as a pass rush scheme, and Oakland was in it for a snap during a series in their final preseason game, too.

The comment about it being a good changeup scheme against a zone blocking team is interesting. It'll be interesting to see if it gains traction.

That is a great newsletter!

I can see why the Texans are looking at that type of defense, especially with Jacksonville and Tennessee in their division.

We'll see how often they implement it during the season, and if that upgrades the SS (Dominique Barber) in IDP leagues that are tackle heavy.

No matter the defense, I still think Demeco Ryans is going to have a monster year!

And the Texans are one of my favorite sleeper defenses, even though I hate team defense leagues.

Not to detract from the topic at hand, but the newsletter is co-authored by Lance Zierlein - Houston Chronicle blogger, 1560AM radio personality, and son of Steeler OL coach Larry Zierlein - and John Harris - former Brown safety, former HS football coach, and 1560AM radio personality. These two are the greatest football minds in the Houston media and put a lot of time into the newsletter.

What I've linked is the last freebie of the pay version and if you're interested I can PM you the e-mail address to subscribe.

I'm in no way affiliated with them, only a fan, but if you're interested I can link you to the newsletter. It's $25 for the season.

John the Professor Harris goes a little crazy sometimes but he has a great football IQ. and LZ kills me with his impersonations.

I have had Demeco since he was a rookie and he has had top 10 stats every year. Going to a 46 will increase his tackles and less block shedding of lineman. Should have less injuries keeping away from 300lb+ lineman. They just need the cbs and s to step up to man to man coverage and keep it tight. I will have to agree pollard would fit in nicely and i would go back to a 4-3 on third and 5+

The 46 is only going to be a change of pace. If teams choose to run against it, it definitely benefits Ryans and Barber. But the Texans don't have the bodies up front, nor the corners/FS behind to make this work against the pass. Teams will check out of running plays and call short passes or put the Texans in a nickel and run the ball if they show this look frequently.

This is true and will only work for teams on there schedule like titans,jags,raiders,49ers, and Rams those teams still have a unstirdy passing ability. So i think it could work for 7 games.
