The 100 Greatest movies of the 1990s #81. Mulan (16 Viewers)

Today when I logged on and saw Total Recall I thought this list was off the a good start and now that I've made it home to see a Madonna docy I'm a little confused about how this made it. I guess he just likes her music or those 2 other things.....

Admittedly, I've never seen it but it only has a 6.4 rating and a music docy about a music tour just doesn't seem all that interesting to me.

Well, if Truth or Dare is number 99, it tells me there weren't 100 good movies in the 90s :D
there were but I'm not too sure if some of them will make it.

No offense but if you’ve never seen the movie in question I don’t take your objection seriously.

Now those who have seen Madonna: Truth or Dare and disagree with my selection, that’s a different story, that’s fair. But I think this is the first time since Ive been doing this that at least two people began their cricitism with “I’ve never seen it, but…”

Oh cut him some slack. I’m pretty sure he wasn’t even born yet.

Truth or Dare.

Watched it way back when…..never watched it again.

Meh…..I realize how huge she was when this came out….but this was highly self indulgent and vain. But then again that was Maddonna who to this day is still a whackado who speaks in a fake british accent and looks like a sleestack from all her cosmetic surgery.

I saw Truth or Dare back innaday too.

Other than some unfiltered access and comments from celebs in the film which felt new at the time... Zero interesting or remarkable about this film. I left the theater and instantly forgot about it. An inclusion into any movie list seems off to me, unless it's a top 100 movies featuring Madonna list. And even then...

I think Floppo should promise to try to be nicer about the picks.

Ok... Kevin Costner almost nailed playing himself in this- thumbs up!

Eta... Or was that a reaction to my spurts TV viewing over family comment

No, it was a poor attempt to play the pun/song title game with zam'.

Sadly, I missed that one as well. Glad I'm able to live to tell about it.

I thought that sort of humor was in vogue around here.

98. Any Given Sunday (1999)

Directed by: Oliver Stone

Starring: Al Pacino, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid

Synopsis:
A pro football team has surprising success upon changing quarterbacks

It’s TV, it’s changed everything I mean, the first time they stopped the game to cut away to some ****ing commercial, that was the end of it. - Al Pacino as Tony D’Amato

I’m guessing this may be yet another controversial selection because the critics really didn’t like this movie and much of the public thought it was mediocre too. I disagree. It’s not quite on the level of North Dallas Forty but it’s still one of the better sports films I’ve ever seen. Though I haven’t been personally around the NFL (despite having watched it all of my life) it mostly felt pretty accurate to me. (The exception being the Cameron Diaz character which was awful and unbelievable IMO) The ensemble cast is outstanding, particularly Pacino and Foxx. I remember being surprised that Lawrence Taylor could act: Stone gives him a memorable locker room speech.

“My name is Willie…Willie Beman….I keep the girls screaming!”

Love this flick.

Also Charlton Heston’s remark “She would eat her young” on Cameron Diaz’s character.

Guilty pleasure sports flick.

And yes a great ensemble cast.

Thought this movie was terrible.

With all the love for Showgirls and Elizabeth Berkley's antics, you are going to ignore her playing a "working girl" showing Pacino a good time in Any Given Sunday?

97. The Doors (1991)

Directed by: Oliver Stone

Starring: Val Kilmer, Meg Ryan, Kyle McLaughlan

Synopsis:
The story of 60s icon Jim Morrison and the legendary rock band he led.

This is the strangest life I’ve ever known- Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison

Like Any Given Sunday, this is a vastly underrated Oliver Stone film. (IMO, his most famous film of the 1990s, JFK, is vastly OVERRATED and it will not be appearing on this list.) Both the late Kilmer and Ryan give top notch performances, and the ensemble is terrific as well (particularly the always interesting Crispin Glover as Andy Warhol- a role he seemed destined to play.) This is an excellent rock bio movie and I think it captures the era very well.

This Doors movie was very important to me during a stretch of heavy drinking. My buddies and I quoted this movie a thousand times. Absolutely loved this movie .

I love The Doors. This was Val’s signature role for me.

Meg Ryan was at her absolute hottest. Seeing this film as an aspiring musician way back when and under the influence of things we don’t need to mention was a wild experience in the theater and repeated viewings on home video.

A great flick.

I've seen 1 of 4 movies so far. Always heard that while Kilmer's performance in The Doors was good, the movie itself was...meh. Roger Ebert's review includes this great line, "Watching the movie is like being stuck in a bar with an obnoxious drunk, when you’re not drinking."

And I'm glad to see that JFK won't be here - that movie is just awful.

I was mostly joking around and thought it was somewhat funny that you haven't liked any of the movies yet. I know there are better ones but so far only the Madonna one has thrown me for a loop.

I really liked The Doors. thought it did a great job telling their story in a compelling way- driection and especially acting by Val (agree about favorite role by him), but also Mclaughlan. Stone is hit or miss for me, but thought this one was solid.

I won't comment on their inclusion but I've honestly never seen the Madonna doc nor The Doors. I am a fairly big fan of the Doors, too... just never got around to seeing the movie. My SO loves it and says she has it on DVD somewhere so I should probably just sit down and watch it sometime. That is, if we actually have a DVD player hanging around the house still.

yeah watching it sober is not fun
