The 100 Greatest movies of the 80s #58. Lost In America (10 Viewers)

I love Top Gun, but can admit in my old age its not a good movie. I will fight Andy on Maverick though. It corrected a lot of the issues i have with the first and the action is as good as a movie can look.
Superior in every way to it’s predecessor.
Jennifer Connelly >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Kelly McGillis
Glen Powell is oh so dreamy

But there was no Jester, so not every way was it superior.

Maverick was Jester….the Irony.

Yeah, no Jester, but I loved Hamm's role in Maverick.

It was just just missing the Viper character - you know, the old mentor walking in on him in his tighty whities.

and WTF does Charlie's PhD in astrophysics have to do with flying an F-14? How hard would it have been to say aeronautical engineering?

Nah. Maverick is good and I enjoyed it a lot, but it doesn't touch the original Top Gun. Call it nostalgia, but there is just a lightning in a bottle quality to it.

I’ve never seen Top Gun. Teenage me was not interested in homoerotic jingoism. Never had the occasion to see it as an adult.
Watch on record. The aerial shots are worth it. The rest is bogus.
I just find the repeating of dialog as a method to ratchet up tension to be tedious:

"He's got missile lock! He's got missile lock!!"
"Take the shot! Take the shot!!"

Or whatever the actual dialog is...

62. Excalibur (1981)

Directed by: John Boorman

Starring: Nigel Terry, Nicol Williamson, Helen Mirren

Synopsis:
Tells the legend of King Arthur and Camelot.

Now once more I must ride with my knights to defend what was, and what might be- Nigel Terry as King Arthur

Happy to be back! This film is, IMO, one of the very few decent fantasy (meaning sword and sorcery) movies ever made prior to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Excellent acting, dialogue, script, and beautiful cinematography.

Even with it's flaws, it's one of my all time favorites.

Are you kiddding me? The knights riding into battle whilst REMOVING THEIR HELMETS? The complete impossibility of Uther raping Igraine while wearing that suit of armour? Watching shiny suits of armour tarnish during the scenes? We went because our friends had just seen it and told us how hiarious it was. We went to the next show and tried not to disturb the audience with our laughter.

The best bits were Helen Mirren and some of the Merlin parts. Otherwise, midnight movie worthy. Also, definitely better than some of the previous selections.

Maverick is less than that
You got a problem with James Garner, bub?
:boxing: I take offense if someone does

As for the TG movies, the original is a classic, but for me on rewatch it drags in the middle. Maverick has been rewatchable all the way through.

I found Maverick better. First, I have permanent wood for Jennifer Connelly. Second, the flight action is better. There are a lot of holes in that action. My FIL won Top Gun before it was called that. We took him and he laughed when the SU-57 went flat and Cruise goes blowing by him. He's like... um, they guy exposed his entire plane. Pretty sure I could have ripped holes into him. Problem is, that SU-57 move might be one of the coolest parts of the movie. He said it's called something like a Cobra or Kovachev Bell. Can't remember. He knew the names of all the moves they made.

61. Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982)

Directed by: Amy Heckerling

Starring: Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates

Synopsis:
A group of high schoolers experience first loves and relationships.

What Jefferson was saying was “We left this England place ‘cause it was bogus”- Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli.

Starting a mini run of some classic high school films…the two things I love most about this movie: (b) Playing “Kashmir” (after he was advised to put on Led Zeppelin IV- lol)
(a) Phoebe comes out of the pool- candidate for the greatest moment in cinematic history!

Top 25 of the 80’s hands down.

This was my high school life circa 1985-1988 to a ****ing tee.
