The 100 Greatest Songs of 1977 #1. Come Sail Away (3 Viewers)

25. Billy Joel “Vienna” (from The Stranger)

I keep marveling about how amazing this album is. In all the different years I’ve done these lists, I don’t believe I’ve ever selected this many songs from the same album- and that includes some of the great records by the biggies, like Zep, the Beatles, the Stones and the Who. And after this there’s still two more songs to go.

Anyhow Billy Joel has stated a few times that this is his favorite composition, and what’s not to like? It’s a tremendous ballad. Thanks to the TV show Glee, it also seems to be the most popular Billy Joel song for my children’s generation. My daughter even danced to it.

This thread now has me thinking too much about Billy Joel song rankings.
I'd rank Billy Joel songs. He's the man.

(No, I don't volunteer to set it up. )

23. Iggy Pop “Lust For Life” (from Lust For Life)

The intro to this song will forever make me think of the Jim Rome show. It’s been years since I listened to Rome and I have no idea if he still uses this tune but back in the day it was his introduction. Anyhow, great song, co-written and produced by David Bowie.

I believe Rome alternates between this and Welcome to the Jungle as his intros. Probably the best parts of his show.

29. Donna Summer “I Feel Love” (from I Remember Yesterday)

Donna and the brilliant Giorgio Moroder helped to invent electronic music with this amazing song. Because of the singer and era it’s regarded as disco, but it actually has more in common with 80s dance music like Erasure or Bronski Beat. Way way ahead of its time.
Name an Erasure or Bronski Beat song without looking it up.
You really, really, REALLY undersell this songs importance by mentioned good bands, but not hugely influential ones.
Try Brian Eno, David Bowie, the Human League, dance music for the next 15 years and pretty much the entire LGBTQI community

I love Erasure. “A Little Respect” is easily one of my favorite songs from the 80s. And Bronski Beat was my (gay) roommate’s favorite band during that era and he played them incessantly. I was PRAISING this song by offering those groups up as examples of its influence. So your criticism seems misplaced.
Apologies. I thought you were throwing out Erasure and Bronski Beat as an insult like it influenced The Wiggles and William Hung. Erasure and Bronski Beat were heavily criticized by sections of the UK music press in the 80s with heavy undercurrents of homophobia.
I wasn’t aware of that. I mean I guess I knew they were gay but I wasn’t aware of the criticism. They were both huge at the time at dance clubs I went to and on KROQ (the local new wave station.) I always associated Erasure with Yaz and Alison Moyet.
I like looking back at the old KROC music charts. Ahead of their time.

Didn’t discover The Stooges/Iggy Pop until much later. His big mainstream break may have been Candy, then people checked out his other releases. He’s from Ann Arbor, but he had no radio play in Michigan, Segar and Nugent got it all.

22. Fleetwood Mac “The Chain” (from Rumours)

The only song on this album that is credited to all 5 members. The lyrics, however are all Stevie and pretty personal (apparently about her breakup with Buckingham.) A legendary rock classic which well deserves the accolades it’s received over the years.

21. ABBA “Take a Chance On Me” (from ABBA)

Iconic catchy tune that is for the ages. The video linked is also an all timer- truly awful yet I can’t look away.
if you don’t love ABBA then you’re not fabulous.

guilty pleasure.

Shouldn't be. That's a great record.

True, their videos rarely matched well with their music. I do like this 1976 one just for the shots of the 4 of them cruising around in a Rolls Royce convertible.

I was in a Wegman’s (grocery store) recently. This song randomly came on. All was well with the world and life was good that night.

I enjoy certain songs by both ABBA and the Bee Gees, and both of these are good. Not ones I reach for often, but I get the love.

The Chain is a major classic by Fleetwood Mac. I love the live version from The Dance from the later 90s. I am not really a live album guy in general, but that live album is what turned me from someone who liked a few FM songs into an actual fan.

His big mainstream break may have been Candy
Right before that album, he started making a comeback with Cry For Love (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LMwqOMTl0M) Real Wild Child (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHA7p9t4yCQ) for his Blah Blah Blah album - but yes then Candy was from his next release and an even bigger hit.
Correct, I forgot about Real wild Child preceding Candy.
and then he hit big again when "Lust for Life" was used in Trainspotting and became a hit again 15 or so years later.

19. Elvis Costello “Alison” (from My Aim Is True)

Elvis Costello’s signature love song didn’t get any real attention until Linda Ronstadt covered it. But it’s the original version that we remember today. It’s a timeless, classic ballad that remains one of his best compositions.

Great pick here

yeah, gotta believe it will make the UK top 31 list in a few places - especially with the amount of Elvis Costello of songs that don't qualify because of the American guy in the Attractions

The Attractions qualify. The Imposters do not.

Your aim was true though.

I know Dr. O already corrected the reference, but to expand on that: basically all of the good Costello was eligible, and much of it was taken.
I was trying to pair Elvis Costello with Gregory Abbott, but alas Greg is American.

Now theres a song i totally forgot about, Cry for Love. Such a deep vocal. “Cause Imitations Boring, Cry for Love”

As an aside Real Wild Child is a cover/reimagination of the Aussie classic Wild One by Johnny O’Keefe. It was released in 1958 and was Australias first real rock star.
Pop heard it in Australia and got to thinkin.

Heres Pop in 1979 high off his face in a highly entertaining performance of “ I’m Bored” and being Interviewed on Australias most watched music show of the time Countdown. This was live G rated TV. (Ignore the first First 20 seconds of some other band)

18. Supertramp “Give A Little Bit” (from Even In the Quietest Moments…)

List is getting real now. One of Roger Hodgson’s best ever compositions, a pop rock masterpiece. I especially love the ending. Very satisfying tune.

In the misheard lyrics realm, I never knew the line was “Betty Lou” at the end. Thought it was “Babalu” as in Ricky Ricardo. :bag:

My guess was “Roger Hodgson making Roger Hodgson noises.”

As much as I love Supertramp's golden era (Crime though Breakfast), Give a Little Bit has always been a song I can take or leave. It's catchy enough, and I get why it was so popular, but it's never been anything special for me.

One of the guys on my text chain of 5 middle-aged idiots generally likes/is ok with 70s prog/AOR bands but Supertramp songs are an instant nope for him because of Roger Hodgson’s voice
Hodgson makes Jon Anderson sound macho in comparison.
I’ve always wondered how these guys, among others, have that kind of pitch/range. Like there’s a microphone clamp on their junk or something.

17. Billy Joel “Just The Way You Are” (from The Stranger)

This was written about Billy Joel’s first wife, and after they went through a very ugly divorce he refused to sing it live for several years. Now he does again, and it’s probably his most well known tune outside of “Piano Man”.

It’s a marvelous ballad, made more so by the superb saxophone solo by jazz artist Phil Wood.

Good song, but I don’t think it’s his second most well known song. Younger folks know Uptown Girl way more than this one. A quick glance shows it’s not among his top 5 most-listened-to songs on Spotify.

16. Heart “Barracuda” (from Little Queen)

I don’t have much to say about this song except that 70s hard rock doesn’t get much better than this. The opening guitar riff is, of course, the stuff of legends.
Indeed - and inspired by this Nazareth tune

Never knew that. It does sound similar.

I am still very much in love with my wife, but if Nancy would ever have me, I would leave in a minute. 🥰

my wife laughs at me for this ...so there's that

I didn’t know that was her.

She was Cameron Crowe’s girlfriend at the time and thus got a small part in the film.

Even more badass is that it was written about real-life encounters the Wilson sisters had with sleazy men in the music industry.
