The AAF and XFL (1 Viewer)

I think the best way for the XFL to succeed is for it to become a work. It's what Vince does best anyway... Let's have a heel coach who tries to cheat. Give me some player vs player rivalries that are built over a few weeks before they actually meet on the field. Heck, have an XFL team invade an AAF locker room and trash the place, nWo style.
I'd watch that.

I'd seriously watch a football version of the WWE.

I don’t know. Why can’t the AAF just work on being a solid spring/minor league for the NFL to be successful?

they started in a smart way with some coaching name recognition. They have a small handful of recognizable players in the league. As they continue, they’ll have more former-NFL players since so many drafted players go in and out of the league so quickly it seems. It’s crazy enough it just might work (with NFL support).

It's interesting to note that ratings have increased with each week.  Not crazy increases, but honestly, I'm pretty sure even the most optimistic person was thinking only a mild decline each week would be considered a success.

On a side note, how many more days until a team sings Johnny Football?

The numbers are more than good enough for a start up league.  As the article shows below, the numbers compare with NHL and MLS games.

Of course the cost of running the league vs revenue obtained is the key but these tv numbers are in no way bad.

How do you drive a franchise into the ground when it hasn't even played a game in its existence yet?

Marc Trestman will do his best to find out as the new HC and GM of the XFL's Tampa Bay franchise.

Yea can’t say I was real excited to hear that. So many local options with 3 iconic college programs in the state and they choose....that guy.

I do wonder if they will throw stupid money at Tebow though. He’d put 40k in the stadium alone.

The NFL is thinking about allowing AAF teams to "borrow" NFL players.

loaning players happens thousands of times over every year in the soccer world.  it continues to be an excellent way teams can get players real playing time at other teams who can use said player.  It can be a win win for all involved many times.

if they can work something like this out with the NFL (and NFLPA), then I think this is exactly the kind of thing I was referring to in my last post...

just change my "former-NFL players" line to "former and current NFL players" and I think the AAF is on the path to being a very successful "minor" league (not really "minor league" if they have actual practice squad and 3rd QB type players playing in the AAF to get playing time).

.  On a side note, how many more days until a team sings Johnny Football?
http://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/26283668/manziel-joins-singletary-coached-memphis-aaf

Johnny Manziel is headed back to the United States to play football, and it will be in Memphis, Tennessee.

The Alliance of American Football announced Saturday night that it has signed the quarterback and that he was claimed on waivers by the Memphis Express after the San Antonio Commanders relinquished his rights.

Alliance Football League Moves Title Game to Jerry Jones' (The Ford Center at) The Star

The Alliance of American Football, which has a team in San Antonio but not North Texas, is moving its championship game from Las Vegas to Frisco.

The new eight-team spring league, which plays its seventh set of games this weekend, said Wednesday that the April 27 title match will switch to The Ford Center at The Star, which is owned by Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys.

"I am a big fan of The Alliance," Jones said. "They are the first high-quality alternative football league to come along in a long time. The championship being live in prime time on CBS and the league's success in drawing good crowds in Texas means this will be a great event for the fans of the Dallas/Fort Worth area."
Hmmm. With Jerry being affiliated with the AFL, I'd wager that this might affect the XFL negatively unless they have some real tricks up their sleeves to gain an advantage. I don't see both leagues making it.

Not sure if this is an empty threat or if they're serious, but the majority owner of the AAF said they'll make a decision in the next two days as to whether the league is discontinued or not.

I guess the AAF was actually always considered to have a low chance of survival.  I read an article the other day where it said the XFL actually is backed by FOX and ESPN.  So it will have much better sponsors and much better promotion.  The AAF rushed out a year ahead of the XFL to try and win over fans by being first to market.  But it was always known that by doing so, they were taking a big chance of running out of money quickly.

Maybe the XFL should just absorb the AAF and become a bigger league.

It’s dead. Sucks.

Sources: The AAF will suspend all football operations today. New owner Tom Dundon will lose approximately $70 million on his investment. Dundon makes decision against wishes of league co-founders Charlie Ebersol and Bill Polian.

The fact that they folded before the playoffs is crazy.  How do you not know you don't have enough money to make it through the first year?

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reports the Alliance of American Football will suspend all football operations on Tuesday.

According to Florio, the league is not yet folding, but that looks like the only possible outcome. Earlier this week, majority owner Tom Dundon said the league would have to consider shuttering if the NFL Players Association refused to allow younger players on NFL rosters to play in the AAF. "If the players union is not going to give us young players, we can't be a development league," Dundon said. A source within the NFLPA told USA Today that allowing the AAF to use NFL players would violate the terms of the CBA and increase the safety risk. The AAF still had two weeks left in their inaugural and seemingly final regular season.

Albert Breer is claiming that the Dundon $70MM investment was only aimed at getting the IP the AAF was developing for its gambling app.

I would assume that everyone bought the rosy attendance figure estimates would have helped defray the other costs, then when the stadiums were empty and no one tuned in on TV they had a bigger shortfall to cover.
TV ratings were actually decent.  All things considered.

So the NFL isn't the only poorly run American football league?
But the NFL isn't poorly run in a financial sense.

Just like this sudden change in stance on replays for pass interference. Hmmmm, suddenly they are going to "make the fans happy" and add what will inevitably be more replays. More replays means more game stoppages means more advertising on television means more revenues when negotiating the next TV deal(s). What a happy coincidence!

So Johnny Manzeil joins the AAF and they suspend the WHOLE LEAGUE?!?

This guy is a menace to society.
I was flipping through channels the other day and happened upon the Memphis game.  As a Browns fan, I was somewhat curious to see how far Johnny Football had come in his development.  I was tuned in for exactly 2 plays before Johnny through a pick at the goal line (tipped off his own WR, but delivered too late nonetheless), and preceded to get his bell rung trying to make the tackle on the return.  He had no clue where he was...TKO.  He was done, and then I changed channels.

You might be dumb guy, I'm not.

If not the NFL what are the players other options, well?
The players would strike until they got what they were entitled to and the NFL would likely be sued for unfair labor practices/negotiating?  What are you even talking about?

And Walmart makes a ton of money, how much do those cart pushers make?
:lmao:  ok you either aren’t being serious or you are exceptionally in over your head here. Are you some kind of shark pool troll I don’t know about or something?

I'm talking about letting it get to the point it is today when it comes to $$$$$$$,  It's gotten ridiculous. I assumed it  was real obvious I wasn't talking about being able to do anything now, it's too late, I was talking about letting it get to where it currently is.   The players make FAR too much and that's obvious.

The players make far far too little, especially compared to counterparts in nba and Mlb.

Dude, cool the attitude, ok?  You always have such a poor way of communicating with others?  Dude, little kids troll...ok guy?

So just how much can the NFL players expect to be paid, what is the ceiling?  When does it get....ok ok now that really is too much....well?

How many cart pushers push them like this?

Regardless, your analogy is flawed.  The cart pushers are the vendors and ticket takers.  The food and products at Walmart are the players.  Walmart is giving between 50%-90% of their revenue to the food and product wholesalers.
