The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

Anyone super impressed with this? It seems like a nice upgrade, but no real killer features. For those that have been on a iPhone 3 or 4, waiting for the 5, it has appeal, but not sure it has that something special that would make users who have chosen Android in the past to switch.

And the "adapter"...that was a mistake. A necessary one, since they changed the adapter, but seems like that is going to be quite fugly if someone has a bunch of different peripherals. Also wonder about how well your phone would be supported with many of the docks are fairly shallow. I know it's Apple's MO, but did we really need another connector? Does anyone know the advantages of this over, say, micro-usb? (I'm guessing power/charging is a big part of it, but that hasn't been a problem for Android phones.)

Agreed. Not adding in NFC was interesting. LTE is a big selling point in many cases but I'm not falling over myself to upgrade from the 4.

I'll repost since no one responded last time:

Convince me why I should get the iPhone5 over an Android phone.

I have an android tablet (Samsung Galaxy) and a Motorola OG Droid (not running ICS...). One of the things I really like is tethering my tablet to my phone so I can use the internet wherever on my tablet (wifi only) and NOT HAVING TO PAY EXTRA FOR IT. Plus, I have unlimited data on VZW grandfathered in, so I'd honestly consider moving to a full-price phone in order to keep that. The full price for the iPhone seems outrageous to me.
I'm not really answering your question since I don't feel super strongly one way or the other on it, but I believe you'll lose the bolded with any new phone you buy, not just an iphone. Aren't the carriers locking out tethering on Android phones as well (unless you have a plan that supports it)?
I can tether my jailbroken iPhone 4S.
I was assuming he meant without rooting/jailbreaking/etc, as with that any phone can be tethered.
Yes, I tether with a rooted Andriod phone for free. VZW doesn't seem to care, but I only use it when I travel. I was under the impression that even a jailbroken iPhone was prevented from tethering at the operator level.

I think it's a lot better than my 4, but I'm just about as meh on it as I was when the 4S came out. Spoiled, I guess. The adapter thing is pretty irritating.

Weird, I've been tethering my laptop to my phone for almost a few years now.

Again, it's a verizon issue not a iPhone issue. My NON-JAILBROKEN 4s has a "Personal hotspot" button I just flip on and I'm up and running for 2 connections for no additional fee. Unlimited data for $60/mo too.

Shouldn't be an issue then. I tether on my jailbroken 3gs on AT&T all the time.

The adapter thing is pretty irritating.
Agreed though it's a must if they're going to continue to miniaturize. That apple dock connector had grown cumbersome (to say the least). Not the end of the world. IMO this will be the last physical connector we'll ever see from Apple so they went as small as possible to future proof it.Regarding upgrading from my 4s... I like the panoramic camera... DMD pano app is solid but cuts resolution. I like the noise canceling a lot. Particularly since I drive a jeep w/ lots of wind noise and humming tires. I like the form factor increasing size without making it giant like many of the droids (I don't want a tablet in my pocket)I like that they increased the battery lifeI like the processor increases but as a non-gamer I am rarely "waiting" on my 4SI love the LTE Option but my Provider won't be rolling out LTE in Memphis until early next year. I like the idea of enhanced call audio but don't see that rolling out instantly I love the IOS6 upgrades but those are available on my 4SOverall I'll likely be holding off on the upgrade till early next year, at which point I'll be able to upgrade for $180 and keep my 4s to sell for $300ish.

Same thing here. I'm not sure it's keeping me from going to the Galaxy. I need something, have had a broken screen for months now. Like Oats, I was waiting for the omg moment to keep me on iPhone for sure but it didn't happen. I'll probably stay if only because of familiarality, but I'm gonna ck out the SIII at least.

Any thoughts on why they still use a proprietary connector? (Besides that they are Apple.) Not to answer my own question, I know they need something for charging, and maybe dev work, but for everything else (wifi, bluetooth, etc.) it seems like there isn't a big reason to have a proprietary connector anymore.

My guess is the 2 way control interface that occurs with so many iPhone / iPod devices and the accessories. Plus a microUSB port is not very structurally sound. The old dock connector provided a much firmer/durable connection in the past. The iPhone is used for LOTS of stuff that other phones simply aren't used for... and that ability to interface is pretty important.

Thanks, good point. And microUSB is a bit flimsy.edit: I should add, the new connector being reversible is actually pretty cool - can't tell you how many times I've tried to plug in my microUSB in the dark and then had to flip it. I am in the habit of feeling for the catches on the bottom now.

Because you can't sell a micro-usb cable that will fall apart in 3 months for $50.

that's pretty f'n sweet

I'm gonna wait til' I can see it in person.

If the build quality is a good as it looks I'll likely switch back to the iPhone. I'm glad it doesn't have a glass back anymore as Ive seen so many shattered iPhone 4s. I currently dig my EVO (minus the 5 minute battery), but the metal ring came loose and now it's held together by a rubber band. Time for a new one.

If you're normal-Joe like me, Android vs. iOS preference parallels being either a boob or a butt man. They're all good, not as different as the hardcore fans make them out to be.

:goodposting: I'm a fan of apple's ecosystem but I've been saying for a while now that anyone trying to decide between the two would be well served to simple go try them both out and pick the one that they prefer.

Android has knocked off iOS to the point where the two are very similar with regards to overall functionality at this point. :P

Not sure if I'm upgrading when my contract is up in February. The 5 is just not something I need to have. I have the normal 4. I knew about the screen size but was hoping for bigger. As of right now, the 6 looks more impressive to me.

Im right where you are (EVO owner...though, mine is held together without the rubber band)I do like the 4" screen...a bit of a downsizing, but using the iPad more and more at home now, the need for the big screen on the phone is not what it once was for me. Will check this out when I can get my hands on one and compare to the Galaxy III.

Good to know it's possible.

It's Malibu Stacy with a new hat.

It's alright. It just doesn't have the pop that previous I-Phones did. Not worth running out and buying one Day 1.

Was anything said about replacing google maps with the new apple product in the os upgrade?
I'll have to use both before I make a judgement. It's a pretty blatant knockoff of Google maps. It does seem a little more responsive that GMaps but I dunno.

Flyover looks pretty cool.

How far back can you go and sill get the new iOS? I have a 4 so I'm guessing mine will be supported. Does first gen iPad get the upgrade?

So when I update my iOS on my iPhone 4, will maps and YouTube disappear and be replaced by imaps?
Until now YouTube/Google had never created their own YouTube App. It was always a "Stock" app on iOS. That is no longer the case but Google has released their own YouTube App (something they should have done a while ago) so it's hardly an issue. http://www.insidebayarea.com/news/ci_21514173iOS will default to Apple's Maps for turn by turn directions and other map related functions instead of Google Maps, Yes.

iOS6 will not be supported on iPad 1. iPad 2+ will be supported. My guess is it's a horsepower thing.

Engadget says iPhone 3GS will get the iOS6. You probably need to have iOS5 on it first. I just updated my 3GS to iOS5 a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully when it comes out, I'll be able to wirelessly update to iOS6.
