The Apple iPhone Thread (2 Viewers)

Well, I've had my iphone a few weeks now and I think I'm finally pasted the honeymoon stage. The device itself works great for everything I need. ATT however......leaves me feeling less than desireable. I have issues with the battery as well when I'm at my work......but the battery last much longer over the weekend.

The visual voicemail is great. I'm suprised this was never thought of before. I wish you could make songs from your ipod your ringtone instead of using the generic tones Apple provides.

Also, if you take a picture with the camera you can set it as wallpaper. But someone sent me a photo in my email and I couldn't find anything that would allow me to save it to the phone or apply it as a wallpaper. Perhaps, I am still not sure how to work the darn thing yet. Does anyone know if you can download a picture to your photo albums from the internet or email?

Seriously? Wow, that seems pretty stupid. It's pretty common now to be able to use MP3s as ringtones.I'm getting the second version of the Chocolate phone in a few days and can't wait. It's not as feature robust as the PDA phones, but it will do everything I need it to do and it's a lot sexier than the phone I have now. If I actually used text messages I'd probably get an eNV, but I don't. And I get to stick with Verizon's excellent coverage.

I'm wondering if it's because you have it in Search for Wifi mode. There are some tweaks you can make for better bettery life. I can charge my iPhone every other day and be fine.If you're interested, i can post the link for battery life tips.

That would be great.

I've had mine for a while now and here are my views:

Ipod integration is awesome. Easily the most used feature of the whole phone and a big part of why I got it (2 in 1 device).

Calendar needs help. iCal on the Mac is great, but I'm really not too impressed with the calendar on the phone. Lots of potential here, syncing with .Mac accounts and all, but now my calendar isn't that great.

Contacts are easy to add and manage, much easier than on my previous PDA phone. Calling the people I want is very easy, much easier than previous phone.

Pictures are amazing, one of the best parts of the phone. The camera is acceptable.

Battery life is OK, but I generally am using my phone's ipod for an hour or two each day, plus talking for about an hour, so I charge each night.

Texting is great.

Surfing the net is the best on any phone I've tried. This and the iPod integration make the iPhone worth it to me.

Email is OK. I have three gmail accounts and check them all on my phone. I send and receive emails using it, and have had no problems and its' very easy to do. Wish there was a "mark as read" option though, for some of the files as some can be big and take forever to download.

Anyways, it feels like a 1.0 device in terms of a mac product. I'm expecting more functionality in future releases, not much on the hardware side, as that seems pretty good, but better software.

Finally turned the iphone back in a couple of weeks ago. To be fair, it was mainly because of ATT's pathetic coverage. The Apple store was cool and gave me full refund with no restocking fee. Couldn't ask for any better service there.ATT was cool and said I was out of the contract. Let's see if they follow through.Bought a Blackberry 8030 and love it. Actually like it better than the iphone.Iphone was phenomenal for pictures. Uber cool to move and resize and scroll through. But everything else was basically just ok.Calendar was ok. Email was bad compared to Blackberry. Voice mail was very cool with the visual voicemail. Makes sense.Battery was ok to weak.If I'd been able to get coverage with ATT, I probably would have kept it. But wasn't meant to be.J
Joe...did you mean the 8830 (Verizon)? I just picked one up and that thing is awesome. I think you made a great choice.

Hi Peep.Yes, my bad. I meant the 8830. I like it too.J

Does the BB8830 have the same ability to surf the net as the iPhone?

update from anyone else that has had the iphone for a couple of months?

Still love mine and I got it first day it was released. Use it every day and it replaces my laptop on trips. (just for casual surfing and checking email).

I've had it for a little over a month and it is by far the best purchase I have ever made.
I'm thinking of getting one for me and the little wife.I've never had an ipod either.
Do it, seriously. You won't regret it. The iPod function on this thing is top notch now. Scrolling album covers vertically as well as horizontally is just great. Internet works great and getting my mail sent directly to my phone is fantastic. Only negative to me is the amount of space as I am already maxed out.

Funny you say that, I left my laptop at home on my last trip and just used the iphone for internet surfing as well as catching up on emails. Love it.

I need a new phone and I just can't spend 400 on a cell phone. Not because I don't have the money. It's just, I can't do it.

While I can see myself spending $400 on a phone that will, hopefully, last >4 years, I do not want to pay the higher monthly charge. $70 a month for a phone? That is a lot of money to me for what it can do. I would need to get rid of my internet at home in order to justify that and surfing on a 3.5" screen does not seem the smarter thing to do.

My bill is actually around $55 after taxes and everything.

I thought plans for the iPhone started at $59.99? Also, another reason I will not buy one soon is because my phone does its job for now. I have another ~9 months on my current plan, yes I know I could upgrade but still. And, I can wait for gen 2.0 of the iPhone.

It is, and that's the one I have. Company discount nets me 5-6 bucks off.

I would like for an iphone owner to chime on this, please.

I went to the apple store and began playing around with one. I immediately went to sms to try out the keypad. It seemed useless. I sat there for about 10 minutes trying to type out sentences, and never got through a word, let alone a sentence, without the need to retype.

Is the keyboard something that you just need to get used to, or does it suck as much as my first impression leads me to believe?

thx.

Definitely something that takes time to get used to. First time I tried typing on my buddies phone I ended up getting so fed up with it that I just gave it back. And I was trying to type in a website, not even a text. After a few times of typing on it, you get very used to it. You can also flip the keyboard so that it is horizontal which actually makes the keys a tad bigger.

#### the Q. I had 3 of them since November. Verizon just gave me a Samsung 740 (opens two ways w/ a QWERTY keyboard) for free.ETA: The best thing is Verizon didnt change my "new every 2" date, so I can get another new phone in less than a year.

 ...takes getting used to. Biggest thing was that you have to put your finger over the letter when you type, so you can't see it, like an actual key, just feels counter-intuitive to do though.I'm pretty fluent with it now, and it remembers when you type in new words and tell it that it's recognition was wrong. It's not the best, but just like all small keyboards, it's just something you have to deal with.

:wall: Took a little while to get used to but actually works a lot better than I thought it would, FWIW.

Hi -jb-I've heard lots of people say that they get used to it. It my opinion, it sucked incredibly hard when I first got it. A month later, it had improved to just sucking bad. You will get better but if you've ever had a real keyboard on a blackberry or treo, it's terrible. Of course there's a reason, you get the big screen when you want it. It's just not a trade off I'd remotely consider worth it. I'll take the smaller screen and a good keyboard anyday. But that is just me. I realize others feel differently.J

Does the BB8830 have the same ability to surf the net as the iPhone?update from anyone else that has had the iphone for a couple of months?
Yes teh 8830 can there are two differences#1 - The 8830 is faster#2 - The Iphone display is better
Agree. But add that the 8830 is TONS faster. Internet on regular phone service with the iphone (not wifi) is brutally slow. That will have to improve soon but it's painful. J

It's not as bad as you are making it out to be. Is it lightening fast, by all means no. But the main reason I was going to hold out was for the 3G iPhone. Obviously that isn't coming out anytime soon because of battery issues, so I took a shot, and I have to say that the internet speed is not THAT bad. Could it be faster, of course, but it is definitely manageable. As far as the keyboard is concerned, I guess it just comes down to preference. If you are used to having keys rather than typing on a screen, you are probably going to prefer it. I used to have a Treo, and I prefer the iPhone much more for typing emails/texts.

I gotta agree with JB here, the internet with the 8830 is much much faster on the net then the iphone. as for preferring the iphone key pad to a treo or blackberry... I will have to take your word and say you arent just being a "fan boy" but I also believe you are slightingly insane

Does the Blackberry display the "true internet"? I would agree that the internet on the 8830 is MUCH faster, I never disputed that. Seeing that the iPhone is currently on EDGE contributed heavily as the main reason I wasn't going to buy one. That being said, the keyboard is personal preference. I had the Treo, which I believe is similar to the BB, and I prefer the iPhone setup. Just my opinion.

I know on my 8830 I can have a so-called desk top view but most sites are way to big and I have to spend half my time scrolling. So I just use the mobile view. However if I am posting on here I use the desk top view.

Verizon just gave me a Samsung 740 (opens two ways w/ a QWERTY keyboard) for free.
What do you think about that phone?
The Good: I get much better phone reception. The QWERTY Keyboard is sweet (although it takes some gettting used to as the size is different than the Q). With Verizon Premium Plan I get free GPS on it that works well. The downloadable "mobile email" (also included on premium plan) is very good as well - I have hotmail, work email, and aol setup on there (I manually check them, but you can have it check and alert automatically). camera is decent enough. The phone is very light and slim, but you can actually tell you are using a phone when talking on it (some phones are just too smallish IMO or too bulky - this is a good size for talking). I generally have always liked Samsung phones and other products. The Bad: I cant get ESPN MVP on this, although it is available on the earlier Samsungs (they say it will eventually be available on this, but who knows) - I do the texting score alerts in its place for now (unlimited texts w/ premium plan on any network). The "number lock" on the QWERTY sticks some, so when texting i have to go and delete "!#$#%^$^$%*%*$ "at times, but that is probably my fault. It stays illuminated when charging. You have to go to the "get it now" menu to access the "mobile email" download, rather than clicking the "email" option in your "messages" menu - kind of annoying. The Mobile Web isnt real Internet, so if you need to browse the web, it kind of sucks. While the dual hinge doesnt appear to be overly flimsy, I am concerned that the thing may snap at some point.

ETA: generally, given all that, I am much more satisfied with this phone thus far than the Q.

Seems to me all the phones are about that price... :yucky:
I'm in the same boat. My BB 7800g is acting up and is about 3 years old, so I find myself justifying the expense of a new phone. I can find an 8830 or a Pearl or Curve or whatever for about $100 with a contract extension, which is fine by me. If the prices were the same, I'd porbably roll with the Apple, but in my case I'm not sure I think the iPhone is 3 or 4 times the phone a new BB would be.

Thanks. :yucky: I want a QWERTY keypad on my next phone, but I can't go back to a huge phone like a blackberry, I want to be able to comfortably be able to keep it in my pocket.

I will have to take your word and say you arent just being a "fan boy" but I also believe you are slightingly insane :lmao:
I just downloaded operamini for the 8830 to allow you to see normal websites.was able to do an add-drop on sportsline last week :lmao:
Thanks righetti. Can you tell me more about this?J
Actually, it is the BB's that I am looking for. It seems that the general concesus is that the BB's are better than the iPhone and any info on the various BB's would be great.

It's a matter of personal choice of course but I like my Blackberry 8830 a LOT better than I did my iphone. Even when I could get service on the iphone.J

It must have a lot to do with what you do with it. I don't need to depend heavily on it for business uses (enterprise or net). To me, it's a phone with all kinds of bells and whistles.

I'm ecstatic with having it for it's multimedia purposes. All of my Photos, Movies, Music, E-mail, Widgets, You Tube, Widescreen.. on my phone. When I'm with a group of people and can pull out pics or videos of the family on a 'mini plasma device', nothing can top that. It's priceless to me.

My BB's were just ordinary. Did the job, but nothing special.

To me it's not even close. I was a BB die hard, but I'd never go back now.

:headbang:

EDIT:

Judging from this quote below, we're in two different worlds. I wouldn't need any of these things.

I'm sure I could find this out from the website but I know you guys will know the answer and it'll be quicker for me.

A few things I need in my phone. Does the iphone have these things?

#1. Voice memo recorder. I need the ability to record short memos while driving instead of writing it down. Treo and Palm and many phones have this.

#2. A way to store text / word / excel documents. Documents to Go is extremely good on my treo. I have a dozen or so documents (nothing fancy - formatting is not important) that I store on my treo. Some excel sheets as well. It's simple stuff like checklists for certain trips and such.

#3. Vibrate / silent ring. I'm sure it has this but want to make sure.

#4. Screen lock. I see on the commercials how you unlock the screen on the iphone but how do you lock it. I often finish a call and quickly want to put the phone back in my pocket.

#5. The big thing I really need that I'm struggling with is the lack of a task list. I think I'm going to play with my ipod and see how contacts / calendars work there. I might be able to make do. But if I'm understanding correctly, iphone does not have a direct way to import tasks from Outlook, right?

Thanks for the help there.

I think that's a lot of it. What you do with it is key. And it also depends a lot on what you're looking for.I'm not very patient. Unless it was on wifi, anything on the iphone where it connects to the net is painfullly slow. I fully expect them to solve that but for now it's painful.

Email is 10 x better on my BB.

The iphone couldn't replace my 80g ipod so I didn't get the benefit there. Others would.

I have no interest in watching youtube video on it as much of it is really crappy resolution. Couple that with the painfully slow download times on non wifi.

The upside is that it's beautiful. Pics were very cool and I do miss that. I have all the same pics on my Blackberry but they are smaller and you can't play with the sizing as easily.

It's very much a personal thing and what one wants to do with the phone. I know many like you are big fans and that's cool.

J
