The Apple iPhone Thread (2 Viewers)

Every iphone 5 case requires an extension to fit through the headphone hole (that I've seen), unfortunately.

It's a standard USB on one end (to plug into the wall/plug) and an iPhone 5/ lightning connector going into the case. MOST are micro-USB connections going into the case.
Thanks! I like the lightning connector better than a micro.

Now if you could make a set of earphones that had a plug the same size as the extension end, you'd make a fortune!!

Yep! For me, the standard case just doesn't work. No way I could last a day without an extended battery case. It's not so much a problem with the iPhone as it is that I use the #### out of my phone.

Why do you guys need a case? I've been an iPhone owner for almost the beginning and I've never used a case. I think the 5 feels good in my hands without a case. And I know plenty of people who have cases and cracked phones. That case isn't making a big difference.

It's 100% about Battery life for me. Otherwise I'm not so worried about dropping it and it getting damaged.

But no way can i get by without a battery case unless I'm carrying a cord with me and always planning around power outlets :(

Wait. Now I'm REALLY confused. How does a case help your battery life?

When it has a battery in the case that recharges the phone or keeps the phone at 100% while using the case's battery.

Ahhh..... that makes sense. I guess that's what I get for coming into the middle of a conversation. :bag:

I'd rather not use a case either but I use the Lifeproof case because working outside in the fields with dirt, dust and grease everywhere, even with Bluetooth wireless headphones, would be a mess.

Just got my iPhone 5s today and am working thru setting it up. Was showing it to my kids, and they asked about Siri. Hadn't used it before, and one of them suggested I ask "How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?" One of their favorite questions. Their natural response is "A woodchuck would chuck all the wood he could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood."

Siri's response was "Since a woodchuck is actually a groundhog, the correct question is "How many pounds are in a groundhogs mound when a groundhog pounds hog mounds?"

Clever. Kids were rolling!

:goodposting: Lifeproof for me too. Had one since they prereleased them. it's nice to be able to just hose the thing off when it gets dirt/mud/etc. on it. And underwater pics are an added bonus.

bump on cases?
I have used them all... the vast majority of the battery cases are almost identical with very slight modifications in how you display/check the case's remaining charge.

Currently using an off brand "power pack plus" and a Mophie (difference is negligible) , plus a Kinps 4200mAh slide on that is a Hoss. Doesn't protect the top, is a bit bulkier/heavier than the others... but it's got insane capacity (something like . When I need a FULL day of heavy use in an area where battery drain is an issue, or if I go camping for a night and will be away from a charger for 48 hours or so, that's my go to. For reference the iPhone 5 battery is 1440mAh, meaning it's good for ~2.5 recharges.
Icon - just bought the Kinps per your recommendation. On days when you're using this, do you drain your regular iphone battery first and then go to the Kinps, or start with the Kinps?

TIA

Accompli may be the best app ever. Push email, saves all attachments, contacts. Allows appointments from within a message instead of a desperate calendar. Universal inbox.

One downside it seems Kinps turns off when the battery is full... unlike some other cases that can be turned on to just keep the battery at 100% until the case is dead. I generally just try to keep the battery at 100% as much as possible.

It's not a pretty case.. it's a bit bulky... but if you kill that thing in a day, I'll give you a pat on the back.

Abe, I need your help. Here is my current situation:

  • My company utilizes Google Apps for e-mail, calendar, etc.
  • I prefer using Outlook, so I use the desktop application and filter my e-mails there
  • I do not filter within my Gmail at all
  • I use the Calendar within Outlook
  • I do have some sort of legacy Google Sync on my computer, but to sync i would need to setup a new outlook profile thus losing all my filters etc. Am also not sure if the version I have would be continual sync or just one time.
Is there a way to basically mirror what is in my outlook desktop application within Accompli? Could I two-way sync my calendar as well so I can access it on my phone?

Hoping Accompli may be the answer to my problems, but any advice on how you would set things up would be appreciated.

Thank you sir.

Let me think about it. Do your outlook calendar appointments sync to google calendar? Or are they just sitting on your desktop?

They just sit on my desktop. Really that is the biggest problem I face. The fact that I am in the office 7:30 to 7:30 mitigates the issues it causes me, but I really need to figure out a solution at some point.

Also annoying that my phone gets the unfiltered notifications as it crushes my battery. Have been exploring some sort of app that apparently mirrors your outlook filters to Gmail, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.

That doesn't make any sense unless you've never had the calendar sync. The way it should work is that your email and calendar and contacts from your outlook "push" to google and then come back down to all logged in devices. I'll keep looking but I'm guessing you are entering appointments on outlook and some setting is turned off.

Two issues with that. First, I believe you have to pay for the service to be able to continuously sync the calender. Second, to even get it up and running, you need to create a new outlook profile (thus I would essentially be starting from scratch).

I may just need to start using Gmail instead of Outlook.
Gmail is a mail protocol.

Outlook is a mail client.

You can use both and should be able to without issue.

Highly anticipating the iPhone 6. Every leak so far is showing good stuff. If two models, I'd probably get the smaller 4.7 one as of right now. Will have to hold the larger one to "test" out the size. Don't want an over cumbersome phone anymore. The 4.7 screen will be huge compared to the iPhone 4 I had. Not sure what a 5.5" would offer me though.

Call me anal but I couldn't grasp the purported sizes of the iPhone 6's coming out... assuming there will be two models. People are printing 3d models but I don't have access to a 3d printer. So, I took a piece of paper and cut out the reported sizes of the phones. I didn't draw the screen in or anything like that. Just wanted to hold the "phone" to see how it felt.

The 4.7" phone (137mm x 66mm) that is being reported is skinny and seems small to me.

The 5.5" phone (157mm x 77mm) that is being reported is much smaller than my current phone (Nokia 1520) and seems to be the right size. A bit bigger but a much better proportioned rectangle than the 4.7". I see myself going with this model when it comes out and hopefully the delay is not all that great.

Since that last iOS update, been having trouble sending iMessages in some cases. The message sends, but never gets delivered. I've had other iMessages go through with no trouble, so I'm not sure what the difference is. Maybe the version of iOS the other person has? Talked to a couple of other people who are experiencing the same issue. They also said they had a worse cell signal, but I hadn't noticed that on mine. Anyone else having iMessage issues?

I had 1 imessage that was stuck "sending", so every time I opened up messages, the progress bar was never complete, although it allowed me to send new messages that would go through.

Found online to go into settings and reset network settings, then reset the phone. Cleared it all up for me, although I never did find the message that was "stuck".

In a Group iMessage of 4 iPhones (all with iMessage) and one non-Apple phone, I only see texts from the non-Apple person. WTF?

There's no issue when I iMessage with the other people in another text thread.

I'm looking fwd to the 4.7" and will be scooping it on release day. I think that may be the sweet spot.

Remember when icon was arguing that Apple didn't need to go bigger, and that the 3.5" screens were fine? LOL

A bit late to the party here but that is not even remotely close to accurate. Gmail is an email service that can use the mail protocols (IMAP, SMTP, POP3 and MAPI(MS Exchange only))

I admittedly oversimplified. Gmail is not a freestanding mail client like outlook is. If you have gmail you can configure it to sync in a variety of ways. The point was that thinking gmail OR outlook could be used was inaccurate.

I know lots of people who go on and on about how the 5s is the perfect phone. Perfect screen size, perfect dimensions. Have a feeling they will happily take the bigger screen on the 6.

:hey: I would trade up my 5s for a 6 immediately. Not sure if I would go with the 4.7 or the 5.5 but I would happily move up as long as the Touch ID is still around!

I FINALLY got rid of my crapberry at work and got an iphone 4s (I could have gotten an iP5 if I had paid $100 but F that for a second phone).

I want to sync outlook on osx with gmail and an iphone. Why is this such an ordeal? I used google sync several years ago on a windows box with moderate success. Things like this should be getting better, not worse.

I have nothing bad to say about the phone or the OS. The phone, camera and whatever else are all smooth, reliable and never had an issue with having to restart it. What is holding me back is the size of the thing. It is just not for me. Also, as far as Windows goes, that is just not for me on a phone at this time. I like the tiles compared to the icons the iPhone has (Android too).

It is just not for me or for what I "need" a phone for. It doesn't help, overall, that I have everything else Apple though. If I was a Windows computer user, I'd probably think different. My Windows tablet is great to but I just find it "not for me" overall vs. iPad.

Because these three companies are competitors and don't care about making it easier to use the other products?

Excited to see the larger 6. Sometimes I don't have my iPad with me and it wears on you doing much on the smaller screen (4s).

I heard the 6 may bring back the curved edges or somesuch so that it still will fit comfortably in one hand.

Just recently this started happening and I was wondering if there was a way to stop it:

If I go to Google, after it loads, a banner appears at the top and asks me if I want to download the Google app. I click on the X and it goes away. But every time I go to Google, it comes back. It's a pain because as I go to click on the entry field, it moves down. Sometimes that causes me to click on the a link and have it load. It's not a huge deal, but it is very irritating.

Anyone know how to get the banner at the top to stop appearing? I even downloaded the app to see if that would work and now when I go to Google that banner appears and asks me if I want to open the app. :hot:

Icon - just bought the Kinps per your recommendation. On days when you're using this, do you drain your regular iphone battery first and then go to the Kinps, or start with the Kinps?

TIA
One downside it seems Kinps turns off when the battery is full... unlike some other cases that can be turned on to just keep the battery at 100% until the case is dead. I generally just try to keep the battery at 100% as much as possible.

It's not a pretty case.. it's a bit bulky... but if you kill that thing in a day, I'll give you a pat on the back.
I bought one of these, like it some. The battery is great, tons of reserve power. My only issue with it is the fact that when I plug it in, either to a charger or my computer it only goes to the Kinps. If I want to do anything with the iPhone, I have to take it out of the case and connect it. This may not be a problem only with this case, just an issue with battery cases in general. Does anyone have another battery case that does not have this problem?

I suppose I could turn on the wifi syncing on the iPhone, but what happens if the computer isn't on, or another user is on the machine? Do you get an error?

TIA!

OSX Yosemite

Nice look...some translucency...

Jazzed up / customizable notifications...

Some Spotlight UI improvements...

Mail Drive using iCloud... encrypted attachments up to 5GB.

Significant Energy and Performance improvements to Safari as well as UI simplification

Mail Markup looks pretty slick/functional actually.

Airdrop between OSX/iOS for improved continuity.

Handoff uses proximity awareness between devices for ease of transitions between devices

 @ calling Dr Dre to show new Mac dialing feature.

Proximity also allows SMS/Phone Call integration from Mac through your nearby phone. (caller ID, dialing, etc from Mac).
