The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

I know next to nothing about these phones except that they are very cool.I have a TMobile account - can I replace my current crappy phone with an IPhone?
As long as you get an unlocked iPhone, yes.
What is an unlocked IPhone?
Currently, iPhone's can only be activated and used on the AT&T network. But the can be "unlocked" to be used on any GSM network, such as T-Mobile. To unlock a phone, someone just needs to plug the iphone up to a computer, and use software that changes the information on the phone to allow sim cards from other carriers to work. Once this is done, the phone is considered to be "unlocked"."Jailbroken" is another term used for phones, and I think that means that non-signed 3rd party software can be installed.
Keep in mind that this is against Apple's usage policy. Software updates from Apple will often re-lock the phones. You are effectively hacking the phone. Not saying don't do it, just know what you're getting into.
Interesting. So, because I have a TMobile phone, and don't want to pay to get out of my contract, plus the expense for a IPhone, I basically have to sit this out.....Any TMobile phones that, though probably not as exciting, compare?

How difficult do ya'll figure it will be to get the new IPhone?
Depends on the pricepoint. If it's subsidized, as is rumored, down to the price of 199 with new contracts, I imagine scarcity will be a problem.I've sold my old iPhone, have about $400 of that sale price waiting for the new iPhone to come out, and I'm suffering through with an old Nokia right now. There have been multiple times in the past two days where I'd reach to my pocket for the iPhone to look up a number, or directions, or access a file i had on there, etc, only to be disappointed. But yeah, I guess it depends on their supply and the pricepoint. Last year, they had plenty of iPhones on hand, and I bet they will again this year.
So what's your reaction if Steve Jobs says "iPhone 2.0, it is amazing, shipping in October!"

Part of the exclusivity deal with AT&T. This isn't any different than lots of phones that are released as network exclusives. :shrug:Also, keep in mind that jailbreaking iPhones will disable some features that are specific to the AT&T network, like Visual Voicemail.

You don't have to sit it out.You can get an iphone, jailbreak and unlock it, use it until the newest release comes out, which will be v2.0.At that point, you'll just have to wait til someone hacks the 2.0 and releases it in unlocked form, which won't be long after it's released.

Hang on, can you talk to this a little more? I hadn't heard this at all? New contracts only? What about existing contracts?
It's all speculation at this point, but there is mention of subsidizing cost of phone with new contracts. No mention specifically of older contracts, but who knows.

Looking more and more like we are going to see the next version of the iPhone (3G) announced at the developers conference in June.
My company is moving at the end of June. We are considering not installing land lines in the new space and getting all of our employees iPhones instead. Thoughts?
sounds like a great idea.. hiring? battery life is the only issue...
AT&T's horrendous coverage is the issue for me.I'd check the coverage in your new building with an existing iphone first.I don't care if the iphone comes with a built in coffee maker in 2 years, ifAT&T doesn't improve coverage just north of San Francisco, I'm regretfullygoing to have to dump this phone.
where are you? I live just north of san fran  and I was thinking of going with a 2.0
I live in Mill Valley but don't get reception in my house. To be fair, my former carrier, Verizon, had *excellent* coverage everywhere in the Bay Area except my house, so I don't blame AT&Tfor that hole in coverage. What I do blame AT&T for is holes in coverage on Hwy 101. It's the MAIN road through Marin countyand I ALWAYS drop calls just north of the Waldo tunnel, as well as the north side of the grade nearCorte Madera (where Marin Joe's is just off the highway, if that means anything to you). I also havelost signal near the Sir Francis Drake/Lucky Drive exits. That is THREE sections of the major highwaythat millions commute on from Marin and above into San Francisco that AT&T doesn't fully cover. That's crappy coverage, plain and simple.
uhh, this is bad news as I'm in Novato. My wife may be happy to hear that though as she is always at Corte Madera mall

I need a new phone and love the iPhone but I'm on a company plan...anyone know if somebody's hacked it to be compatible with Sprint?

You guys are WAY too excited about this.
:lmao: iPhone = rare steak :goodposting:
And in a peculiar twist of fate, it looks like I will be getting one of these gadgets (free). :goodposting:So when do they come out? Better yet, when will they become "available"? I hope they are smaller than the first one...
Should be out and available on June 9th.
Saw some speculation that it could take a week or so to hit stores. If they were in stores (AT&T) before June 9th, someone would not be able to resist opening up the boxes and spreading photos all over the internet, so don't be surprised if they aren't available the day they are announced.

Last year, shipments of iPhones weren't received until days before the launch. Could happen this year pretty easily. And pics were leaked last year before it was released.

without reading 17 pages, is this a totally new phone?

if so, i am going to be pizzed that 45 days ago i bought the best one offered.

anything special about it?

Nobody really knows any details yet.The only thing that stands out as obvious is the 3G network.

i love my iphone. have had everything from treo, crack berry, side kick, 6700, etc and iphone makes them all look like garbage.
i feel the same & it's not even close.Signed,Ex BlackBerry (x3) & Treo Owner
Do you guys do a lot of texting or email from your mobile devices? Does the lack of a "real" keyboard get annoying on long emails? This is the only sticking point for me as far as pouncing on the new iPhone. I will be doing a fair amount of email on the thing and i am more than concerned about that keyboard interface. I tried it out last year and it took me F...O...R...E...V...E...R to type anything out

not at all. at first, yes. now, i fly.

not sure if it is all in my head, but i think it learns. it seems when i use nicknames or something commonly typed, it seems to correct it TO what i usually use.

I fly through my messages now that I'm used to my iPhone. However, I think I typed faster and more accurately on my Blackberries. I still have randon auto-correct and mis-type come through if I don't double check what I'm typing.

I am on my 4th iPhone (don't ask). The only really good thing about it is the screen. Battery and Internet speeds are horrific. I am typing this post from my bed on my iPhone so I guess the interface is good too.

Will I get the new version? Probably if they address the battery issue and make it flash compatible. Unlike many of the other posters in this thread, I am not head over heels on love with this thing however. I give it 6.5/10.

So why keep buying them? Get a Blackberry and be done with it.

anything special about it? 3G. GPS (rumored).

Battery and Internet speeds are horrific.
To what device are you comparing the battery life to? Normal phone or smart phone?
I'm not comparing it to anything--I'm simply saying it sucks. Why does my phone go dead ~5 minutes after first seeing the 20% battery warning? (Not just my present phone, the 3 previous ones too.)

So a question for the phone :pics: How does/will phone compare to the Blackberry Bold?
No on knows yet really, no official specs have been released, and believe it or not, there's been no official notice from Apple that the iPhone is even being released next week. So, while we know almost for sure that it's the case, it'd be better to wait just a few days to start to compare, so that we have the official specs. Odds are, there will be a variety of phones and features to choose from, at least that's my guess. A baseline model, middle, upper, different colors, etc. We'll see, I can't wait though...tired of my nokia.

I'm not sure why you've had such rotten luck with the battery life, but for me it was great. I agree about flash support though, and think that will be resolved soon.

I've noticed that the battery on mine tends to drain much faster when I'm on a very slow connection (1-2 bars). Sometimes I can drain it from completely charged to below the red line in a single day if I spend a lot of time in a building where I can't get a reasonable Cingular connection. It does chew through the battery worse than any other phone I've ever owned with the possible exception of an early Treo. My Blackberries have had much better battery life.Still, though, it's the most generally-useful electronic device I've ever carried. I'll be lining up on Monday afternoon at the local Apple store if they are made available. The upgrade to 3G alone will be worth it to me.

Some things I hope will be fixed with the new iPhone:

- The lack of any sort of copy-paste functionality is getting pretty ridiculous at this point. Seriously.

- The ability to receive multimedia text messages without having to go through that horrid AT&T viewmymessage.com kludge.

- Some sort of mobile IM client that can connect to AOL and Jabber over the 3G/EDGE network. I know the rumor mills are buzzing about video chat, but I'd be happy with text chat properly integrated into the phone and behaving like an app rather than a webpage.

- Flash functionality would be great but I realize that's almost certainly off the grid, even though it is because of non-technical reasons.

The thing I believe that is the most exciting about the new phone will be the availability of third party apps. Given a halfway decent API, techno-savvy folks who use the iPhone as much as I do *will* write apps to plug the most egregious holes and extend the functionality of the phone to new levels. If I had an SSH app (an actual client rather than a web app) on the iPhone or (dreaming a bit here) a Windows Remote Desktop client, it would be even more indispensable than it already is.

The best idea I've heard during the runup to the iPhone release is having an app that uses the new GPS functionality along with Google Maps and it's "always on" internet connectivity to turn the iPhone into a Garmin/TomTom-like device. It already has a speaker, an audio output, a beautiful touch screen, and an ability to download maps directly from the web. Why not?

That's crazy. I can go a full day, listening to music/making calls/internet/email and have half battery life when I get home. I listen to music for a good 4-5hrs too.

Leaked pictures of iPhone 2.0:

If they are real it confirms a front-facing camera for video chat! It also hints that iChat AV will be released for PC ala Safari.

We can dream. It'd be awesome. My guess is that there might be a few options for iphones, maybe one with the feature and some without.
