If they are real it confirms a front-facing camera for video chat! It also hints that iChat AV will be released for PC ala Safari.
We can dream. It'd be awesome. My guess is that there might be a few options for iphones, maybe one with the feature and some without.
That doesn't seem like Apple's M.O. to me. Video via iChatAV is a killer app for Apple that will set the iPhone apart from the competition and keep the phone industry scrambling to catch up. If it's there at all I'd almost guarantee it's built into every iPhone 2.

Well, I know they're angling for the enterprise market, and those markets should probably be given phones without cameras. So that's one of the reasons I think there will be different models with different hardware, but we'll see.

 Why? Should they be given phones without iPods as well? I don't see the enterprise capability as having anything to do with video chat. Plus, iChatAV will run over 3G and wireless networks, enabling users to presumably voice and video other users (even computers) without using cell minutes. Seems like a nice business capability to me.

Lots of businesses don't allow phones with cameras for espionage reasons. I've had my taken away while on a plant tour and the last two companies I worked for won't allow them as corporate phones. If they want to sell to business folks, they should include a model without a camera.

Some things I hope will be fixed with the new iPhone:

- The lack of any sort of copy-paste functionality is getting pretty ridiculous at this point. Seriously.
They HAVE to have this fixed, don't they Keith?I can remember not being able to believe a $400 smart phone wouldn't let me cut and paste something. That's as basic as it gets.

Yes. Several of the blackberry models have no camera for that reason. (or at least that's what they say. Makes sense to me as their other models do have cameras / video)J

Gotcha. Do their competitors (Blackberry... et al) in the enterprise market have non-camera models as well? Seems like a pretty small niche that would require it.

Some security-sensitive workplaces explicitly prohibit camera phones from the premises. On a percentage basis, that's probably fairly small number of workplaces right now, but I would expect it to grow over time. At the same time, other businesses would eat the video chat feature up. Camera-free models of the same base phone is the way that other enterprise phone manufacturers (like RIM) get around this issue. Not sure if there will be different models of the iPhone this time around but in the future, I would expect to see it happen.

J
I hope so, Joe. That's pretty much got to be fixed at the OS/firmware level in order to do it right. An add-on application would not be the right way to do this.

Next iPhone software update to allow copy-paste

Posted January 2nd, 2008 11:52:25 PM (GMT) by Alexandros Roussos

Apple will release an iPhone software update during MacWorld Expo 2008, well informed sources confirmed MacScoop. But it appears that the unpolished iPhone sofware version recently leaked on the Internet doesn't include all the features of the final release.

The reports we obtained claim that the software update will add copy-paste, which is one of the most requested features by iPhone users, and will provide a few other user interface improvements.

Additionally, the update should provide better stability and performance for the device which sometimes suffers from UI glitches and application hangs in its current version.

Sources also confirmed recent reports claiming that a soon to be released iPhone software update will offer very improved Google Maps with localization and hybrid view, mass SMS sending and multi-page editable home screen.

It is not out of question that other, non revealed yet features, appear with this update, our sources said. Be sure that we'lll keep you updated in case we obtain more information.

Apple to Allow iPhone Subsidies?

FinancialTimes reports that the next Apple iPhone will be sold at "significantly lower prices" than the current one. According to the author, Apple has agreed to allow mobile carriers to subsidize the iPhone:

Apple has bowed to pressure from mobile phone operators and agreed they can subsidise the latest iPhone, expected to be unveiled by Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, on Monday.

The article does not cite specific sources and reports this information as if it were fact. Historically, the Financial Times has been a reliable source of information of Apple rumors. They were the first to report on Apple's movie rental service that debuted at Macworld 2008.

This report may confirm earlier reports that the 3G iPhone would start around $200 after subsidies. It is believed that the iPhone would still cost $399 at Apple Retail stores, but when activated with a 2 year contract at AT&T, the customer would receive a $200 credit or rebate.

Good news but if they kept the phone at $300 and lowered the monthly fee to ~$50... I would be in. The hardware price is not my issue. The monthly fee is. Why? I already pay ~$50 for high speed internet at home... I don't want to pay another $70 a month just to have mobile internet. Yeah, I know you get a phone and all the other gadgets with it but that is what is keeping me from jumping aboard.

Production Delays May Cripple Apple 3G iPhone Sales (AAPL)

Henry Blodget | June 7, 2008 9:26 AM

Counting on the 3G iPhone launch to drive Apple's stock to the stars? (AAPL). Planning on grabbing the new unit thirty seconds after it goes on sale? Better hope the information fed to Barron's this weekend (presumably by hedge funds who are short Apple) is wrong:

[W]hat the fanboys won't tell you -- as won't many unabashed boosters in the press -- is that the iPhone's production rollout is behind schedule. That's what a number of tech hedge-fund managers are saying, attributing their information to investigative research outfits that talk with engineers and supply-chain managers at the contract manufacturer and component suppliers in Asia.

These sources say that Apple has slashed its internal expectations for iPhone unit sales by up to 16%. They report that Apple had planned to ship 12 million 3G units by the end of the third quarter, but now expects to ship about 10 million to 10.5 million by the fourth quarter, owing to production delays...[P]eople have been stating that Apple has shipped hundreds of thousands of 3G iPhones, which are supposedly sitting on warehouse shelves. But hedge-fund sources say that Foxconn International Holdings, the contract manufacturer that assembles the devices, has shipped only several thousand...

Foxconn and component makers won't crank up mass production until the middle of this month, although researchers say that they had been pressured by Apple to start doing so a few weeks ago. The reasons for the delays are unclear, but the most logical presumption is that Apple was too optimistic about how fast supplier Infineon Technologies (IFX) would introduce a new chipset for the phone. Infineon reduced its forecast for shipments this year, and analysts suspect that it's Apple-related.

And to top it off, the "iPhone 2" allegedly comes in an ugly gray (Engadget says these photos are silly fakes). Breathlessly awaited for almost a year, it seems the 3G iPhone is not shaping up to be Steve Jobs' greatest launch.

(This won't make a lick of difference to Apple's financial performance, of course--the iPhone is still irrelevant to the big Apple picture. iPhone glitches will likely punish sentiment, though, especially given the ordinary tendency to buy on the rumor, sell on the news.)

Doesn't sound like a surprise. In fact, it likely seems in line with Apple's plan. Thought being they overestimate to keep the component supply chain full while only building what's necessary for launch. From an article on FORTUNE:

But other analysts familiar with Apple's order patterns say the production reports are typically overestimated by the company, largely to keep component suppliers fully stocked should demand take off. By this reckoning, Apple will probably make about half of the 11 million iPhones the initial production plan calls for. It will probably have about one million 3G phones ready at launch and 4 to 5 million to follow later this year, says one analyst.

I bit... got mine earlier today. I am activating it as we speak. The GPS got me home nicely.
How did you get the GPS working without even activating the phone? New feature I presume?
You can turn the phone on and use it the functions... you just can't call with it. I used the iPod as well.
Tell us more. How's the 3G? Video conferencing? What other features does it have? How about some pics?

i love my iphone. have had everything from treo, crack berry, side kick, 6700, etc and iphone makes them all look like garbage.
i feel the same & it's not even close.Signed,Ex BlackBerry (x3) & Treo Owner
Do you guys do a lot of texting or email from your mobile devices? Does the lack of a "real" keyboard get annoying on long emails?
I fly through my messages now that I'm used to my iPhone. However, I think I typed faster and more accurately on my Blackberries. I still have randon auto-correct and mis-type come through if I don't double check what I'm typing.
does it have spell check (preferably a la Firefox with the red squiggly lines)?

better than nothing i suppose. though that could still be dangerous...amazing how many words that have complete opposite meanings are so close in terms of spelling. i guess nothing to do now but :bag: until the thing actually launches

In a couple of hours I will be. I ate a couple hours ago.

:(Indications are that it won't start selling until the 15th :( .
Agreed.Between employee blackout dates (June15-July15) and Apple's opportunity for weeks of free advertising (Co-announcement media blitz) I can't see how it'd go down today either.Sold 4 Unlocked iPhones over the weekend. (mine @ $385, wife's @$400, 2 friends @$380 & $400)If release lands in June I'll be happy. :goodposting:

Nicely done. I was hoping that I'd have my new iphone by today, but according to package deliveries to phone stores, it looks like they're only going to get a couple of demo models :( .Another week with the crappy nokia. Oh well, at least there's a fun golf game on there, even if it's like the 8-bit original NES style graphics. I can bear it I suppose.

If you could give some pointers on setting up the auction, I'd appreciate it. I'm trying to sell my 16 GB and my nephew's 8 GB. Do they get more if they are jailbroken? What's the best way to jailbreak them? TIA

Follow something like this. Unlocking can fetch close to $100 more dollars.

so they have live streaming? I guess I won't provide updates then.

It's like a star wars convention here. I got in line at 9am and just sat down 15 minutes into it in a breakout room. If you want to see Jobs on stage you had to be here at 6am and wait for 4 hours. stupid
