The Apple iPhone Thread (2 Viewers)

Yeah but the "internet/browsing" time is the same as the 7... one would THINK it would be higher as well given the (presumably) larger battery and the screen being more efficient OLED.  Just seems strange.

I'll say I'm disappointed they still haven't made a true "all day battery" phone for power users... I was hopeful with this release.
Ok, well I didn't follow your question quite right then.  Maybe OLED isn't quite as good as hoped in that way?  Dunno.

The battery case is basically an all day battery.  You're buying a case for your phone anyway, might as well have a battery in it.
I've always wanted to go without a case... I use one begrudgingly (and occasionally burn through the case and the phone).  If the glass is indeed super strong, the phone is waterproof, and the battery is sufficient... I'd love to NOT use a case. These are beautiful devices.

The last remaining thing is the damn battery.

I'll be getting the X 256.

But ironically, this happened for the first time today to my 6+. https://ifixit.org/blog/8309/iphone-6-plus-gray-flicker-touch-death/

Reading all that it seems like Apple will give you a new 6+ with the same defect for $149. BS.

I twisted my phone a bit and it came back from the dead. Reboots didn't help. Hate to just brick it. Maybe sell it now and go back to a 4 until the X comes out.
When I try to go to the link in that article about 'sell people replacement phones' I get a request for a sign in and then it says 'Unauthorized.' I swear I am writing on an iMac, with 2 iPhones and an a MacBook Air. I am an Apple guy!!!

I'm with you...I'd love to enjoy thinness of this thing naked, but the few times I pulled my 6+ out of the case it just felt too fragile. Plus I drop it a few times a month and Would never forgive myself for breaking a $1K+ phone b/c i didn't have a $25 case.

I used my first iPhone 3GS naked and it was awesome. My problem now is they're so damn slippery without a rubberized edge. If Apple incorporated a tactile edge I would love that.

Dont we think that the 8 line of phones will just be eliminated next year and the X model will be the platform moving forward and at a lower price point?  Why buy either this year at all?

Our 6's were paid off this year through Verizon and at this point, I don't see the need to upgrade especially at those price points.

i may reconsider--especially since both our phones are "magically" having the same problem out of the blue, but the wireless charging will be the deal breaker for me and I am betting a lot of people. If the pad or whatever they are promising is cost prohibitive after people drop a grand on a new phone, then I will just get a 7. I mean it is one thing to have a $5 lightning cord at home, work and on the road, but I won't drop $100+ on a couple pads.

Plus I love my Otterboxes and I have heard wirless charging has some problems with thicker cases--not sure if that is true or not.

Did they say wireless charging was the only way to charge the phone?  Why not use your lightning cord when traveling?

I'm pretty sure you'll still be able to charge it with your current lightning cords. Apple's own charging pads won't even be available until next year.

1) Apple is adopting the Qi standard... those pads can be had for $20 and up from Amazon. No need for $100 proprietary pads. Plus, as others stated, you can still just use a cord.

2) From what I know, the cases that have trouble are ones with meta between the phone and the pad... ie battery pack cases.

Not trying to sway you, just more of an FYI

Those notches around the camera/speaker is annoying. Why not just make it either bezel or keep the space always reserved for battery indicator etc as opposed to wrapping video/pictures around the speaker/camera?

Not sure why the 8 isn't the play.  For 200 bucks more you are now dealing with a really odd screen resolution that could play poorly with the web.

The more I think about, the more I'm leaning either 8 or 8 plus. Not sure I want to pay the extra money to get the X just for the screen. It's not like the resolution is much worse on the 8 compared to the X.

Are they done refreshing the ipad mini?

I got that sweetheart deal with Tmobile where I get a free data plan for life.  It seems that deal is RIP.

FWIW, I think there are 3 pretty good reasons (besides the screen)

  1. With the different aspect ratio, Apple is going to push developers to use that ratio going forward to the possible detriment of the ratio in in 8/8plus.  That may not matter until late 2018/19, but that seems like it will be coming.
  2. The 3D front facing camera will become the default standard going forward and there will be a whole bunch of new apps incorporating that going forward
  3. If 1 and 2 happen, then the X will have a longer functional shelf life once the software development catches up to what the X can do.  The basic proposition is that an 8/8+ for 2 years or an X for 3-4 years.  Yes the hardware of the 8/8+ will function just as long as the X, but you may be tempted to upgrade sooner with the 8/8+.  That may not matter if it's a business phone or if you have one of those turn the phone in for an upgrade every 2 years' plan, but there is a segment that will be buying the phone for a 3-4 year period (for some reference there's a decent number of 6 users in this thread including myself).
TDLR, if you are planning on keeping the phone 3+ years, I think the X makes a ton of sense.

For me: battery life, screen size (relative to handset size), display quality, and Camera quality are the primary factors for my preferring the X. I use the camera a LOT on my phone and to get the best setup you need the 8 Plus which is giant. I like the bigger/better screen in a handset close to what I'm used to carrying now. Plus.. battery life is huge for me.

I don't forsee it being an issue with web performance given most websites are trending toward responsive designs nowadays.

Or....a headphone jack?
I don't mind this. Apple is notoriously ahead of the curve when it comes to killing dying tech (floppy dive, optical drives, headphone jacks). It's something you accept when in their ecosystem. I have bluetooth headphones I use for running anyway, and I can just leave the lightning>1/8" adapter on my Grado Over Ear headphones. I can see how this bugs others though.

I'm going to reserve judgement on this until I experience it.

Neat board.

But point I was making with that odd screen shape they could have forced in all the accessory inputs on that side, with plenty of room for a headphone jack. If you don't want to use it, fine.

I love the iPad Mini also. I have had several over the years, and have given one to my son (now in HS). I have always felt that the mini was a better size; and since it was smaller it being lighter was a big selling point too. Don't know why they're getting rid of it.

The mini is the best in the line of iPads hands down. It's the perfect size for a tablet and runs like a champ. My Mini 2 was the best Apple purchase I've made.

With the plus sized phones the mini doesn't really have a lot of function anymore.  I barely use my mini2 because if I I don't care if it is small I'll just use my phone, if I want to see something in a larger format the mini really isn't cutting it.  I'd rather have the regular iPad.

Glad to see the 7/8s will ship with the headphone jack adapter.  I still refuse to believe that wireless headphones are an upgrade.  Any wireless tech that forces me to now routinely charge whatever I used to just plug in is not an upgrade to me.  I dont use wireless keyboards/mice for the same reason.

Wireless charging is different because it's not introducing a new "thing" you have to charge.

While they may be able to take over for the mini in size, the Plus-sized phones are just too big as phones. I don't walk around with a purse, so I just don't have a place to store a plus phone when I'm walking around.

It fits in my pocket just fine.  I've never had an issue with shorts, jeans, or slacks.

Anyone have insight as to when we will see verizon and the like drop the prices on the 7 and 7s? Current offers have a 128Gb 7 for $750 7s is $850

I'm holding my 5s together with a shoe string and bubble gum. No way I'm dropping a grand for the 8X, but a nice new shiny 7s with a ton more GB than I'm limping along at sounds wonderful.

Quit wearing skinny pants, my man.  It's not that big a deal.

The "X" wins because of one thing nobody is talking about: Augmented reality. This tech, if they do it right will absolutely change EVERYthing.

The advertising/informational possibilities of this are staggering all by themselves but you can incorporate it into games (and everyone loves games).

Imagine watching a football game on TV and popping your phone up and seeing on the screen all that player's fantasy points, a team's schedule, or info like that player's career stats, etc.  ow imagine that in a movie, at a restaurant, gas station.

Imagine popping your phone up over an AppleBee's menu and it saying not only calories, ingredients, etc, but also "You ordered this on March 23, 2018".  Or a little smiley face over 3-4 items saying "Shutout's favorites".

Or going to a grocery and scanning your phone up an aisle and seeing a note form your wife with an arrow that says "buy this one".

Almost limitless possibilities.

meh

Augmented reality will be best used for porn like most new technologies.

Like they'll sell fleshlights with an app that superimposes a woman on your bed while you pound the rubber fleshlight.
