The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

That's interesting, I have always found them better sounding than most earphones in the same price range (~$20). I like the way they fit, and would hope that the Bluetooth version would have the same fit. Not sure I could swing the $150 for a pair of earphones, tho.
Yes the Bluetooth version fit the same. And the new iOS supposedly will fix my only gripe with them by allowing you to go to next track and previous track by triple tapping on the left and right ear buds.

First rounds of Geekbench testing is out on the new iPhone 8 / 8 plus / X featuring the A11 Bionic chipset, and the results are pretty staggering.

Apple's A11 Bionic is a cyborg: first iPhone 8/X benchmarks crush all Androids, including the S8

Ever since the first benchmarks of Apple's new A11 Bionic chipset leaked out, we saw that it is going to be a beast, yet nothing really prepares you for two times higher scores of the iPhone 8 and iPhone Xon the cross-platform Geekbench, compared to even the fastest Androids like the Galaxy S8, Note 8, or the S8+.

All of the top devices in the Geekbench charts for Android and iOS are now flaunting 10nm chipsets - Android has the Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 8895on top, while Apple's new phones with A11 topped the charts immediately after their first pass in the benchmark database. As you can see above, the single-core scores of the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or the iPhone X, are more than twice higher than anything Android has to offer, and more than 50% higher in the multi-core runs. Even if we see a move to the 7/8nm process for the spring flagships next year, they still might not be able to top those result anyway.

This goes to show that Apple's A11 Bionic is a cyborg of a chipset indeed, capable of real-time augmented reality, or recording 4K video at 60fps without a sweat. This time around, Apple also has a custom-made graphics and image processing engines inside, so the Bionic might be with the most optimized power/performance ratio that Apple has ever created, and it really shows both in synthetic benchmarks, and during the announcement event demos that Apple showcased on stage.

Betron, AKG, 1more, Monoprice Panasonic RP, Sony MDR,Sennheiser, etc in the below $20.  If you go up to say $30 to $50 or so you can get Sony, Senhiesser, Marshall, etc. All of which fit and sound better.

OK, what kind of voodoo did Apple send to my phone?  It's suddenly not wanting to connect to Wifi any more.  When I try to force it to connect to my home Wifi, it keeps asking for the password even though it's been remembered for years.  :hot:

This chip looks to be strong.  Just for performance in a phone the X is really the only one to get.  Just not sure I like losing my headphone jack, Touch to unlock, and the notch.   Still looking to migrate to the S8+ just for those reasons but maybe the facial ID wont be as bad as I think I know my surface pulls it off flawlessly right now so maybe it will be as quick and easy as touch.  Can't wait to play with the X though.

Losing the headphone jack is a non issue to me.  They include the adapter in the box and with wireless charging you can now have headphones on and charge at the same time.

Try syncing the iPhone with your computer again. Maybe it didn't sync all the way correct before. Just an idea.

Oats are you a sweat guy?  I picked up some Bose wireless sound sports a week ago.  Awesome sound, and they pair seamlessly.  One of the reasons I bought them was to use for conference calls.  I bought a pair of Jabird X3 or whatever and I took those back within a week and picked these up.  So far so good, but I do like the convenience of the AirPods.  My concerns would be sweat, noise isolation and not falling out.  I figured for the falling out and isolation I could pick up some of those ear wings that I could throw on them.  I will probably stick with the Bose because they sound awesome.

The non-Apple earphones that I have used recently have sounded tinny, like a bad live recording, even if the sound wasn't. I don't know if it was just using cheap earphones, or what, but I have never had that problem with the Apple ones.

I wonder how much of it is personal, like a beer or wine; it may be the best in the world, but you can't force someone to like it, if they don't like that kind.

There is a personal opinion on what you like the sound profile.  I like a more flat sound or pure studio levels. I don't like so much bass that it drowns out the mids and highs.

A tinny speaker will be tinny regardless. Some people might prefer it but it will be tinny regardless.  For example SOUL, Phillips, Skullcandy are generally not good head phones.  Where the ones I mentioned Panasonic RP, Sony MDR, Sennheiser, Marshall have a lot better sound quality.  The Betron, AKG, 1more, and monoprice are also good but are not the names a lot would look for when searching for good head phones unless reading reviews some of the tech or sound sites.

I'm not running marathons but I break a sweat during my workouts. Never presented an issue. They fit great and sound great and isolate enough (I'm wearing them while walking around on trains and in traffic, so I don't need or want total isolation) and hold charge well enough. Just good all around.

I have had apple earbuds, Klipsh, Jaybird, and now Bose.

I would rank them Bose, Klipsch, Jaybird, Apple.
Never have been a big fan of Bose while they make solid head phones the pair I had presented to much in the lows and  muffled the mids. that and the B&O at the same prices ranges have better sound for me.  Definitely a choice on where you like your sound profile. I have heard the newer in-ear are a lot more neutral and probably should try them out.

The Klipsch reference series is a solid choice.  I have never owned a set but have heard them from people I know that have them.

JayBird Freedoms have great sound and are perfect for working out with.

Apple ones came with my phone but with them being unsealed (airpods) to they just don't have much low bass, not rated for water resistance, and no real sound isolation.  Really can't put them in the same class as the others here.

Have you tried the Aftershokz?  They really let you keep track of your surroundings and you can still hear your music clearly.  Sound quality close or equal to your standard $30 headphones but do take some getting used to.  I used them on one long bike ride for MS in my state and they worked really well since I didn't want any isolation from my ride group.

Read about one (might have been these Aftershokz) that had an adapter so that you could wear them in your ears, if you wanted or needed to have more of the isolation.

For ATT customers:
Wow, what a crappy offer. A one year old phone that still sells brand new for a minimum $669 now and they'll offer you UP TO $300? You aren't even guaranteed that amount until they get it in hand and since it is up to I'm thinking that's for the 128 GB. I can walk into GameStop and get $400 cash for a 32 GB 7 plus. AT&T sucks with their offers unless you are doing Directv.

Same here. I find the airpods to be pretty flat with a very slight bass boost. They sound better than regular earspods, which I do not like. I like not having total isolation (most of the time - terrible while biking). The best thing about them for me is being able to use one bud only, which is great for listening to talk radio while working at the office. They pair easy and auto pause/play is nice. I like these so much that I bought a second pair to leave at work.

For reference, I also own other decent wired earbuds:

-Bose MEI2i- these are good.

-Klipsch S4i - don't like these - the fit hurts my ears

-Mee SP51 - these are OK. Pretty bassy. Kinda muffled mids.

-Mee M9 - meh

-Sony MDREX38ip - sound is pretty flat, very comfy, complete isolation - i take naps with these since they don't press into my ears too much

-Beats urBeats - sound pretty good. Too much bass though. My kid loves them.

Will these iPhones work on any Qi-based wireless charging equipment?
Yes
I think I have one that I used with an old case that did wireless charging. I didn't really like it that much, because the case had to connect to the lightning port to provide the charge, and you had to disconnect it if you wanted to connect the iPhone to a computer. In theory that should be gone now, since the Qi is built in to the iPhone.

I swear to god Apple ####ed with me.

I couldn't get my wifi issue fixed. I tried all the usual fixes to no avail. It kept flip flopping from LTE to wifi and eating my battery alive.

I finally changed and ordered the 8+ yesterday.

So of course today my wifi is rock solid.

Anyone pick up the watch yet?  I have heard LTE is hit or miss.  The wife wants a new "fitness tracker" and she likes the idea of being able to listen to music while running without her phone.

Will these iPhones work on any Qi-based wireless charging equipment?
Yes, but as I understand it, the iPhones won't be able to take advantage of fast charging models until a software update comes out later in the year.

If you're buying a new qi charger, you probably want to pay attention to its output, as cheaper ones likely can't do fast charge even when the phone is ready to.

That said, I'm using an old one near my bed for my Samsung because there's plenty of time to charge while I'm asleep.

 - I am planning on using one that I had for a case that I had for my 6 that I used a couple years ago, so it shouldn't be that powerful. I'm thinking the same thing as you about charging at nite.

To my surprise I had an iPhone 8+ sitting on my deck when I got home. I’m shocked it came this quick.

Got mine yesterday mid-afternoon. I was anxiously awaiting it! Not sure I did the transfer that well. I haven't decided if I want to do it over again.

That’s weird. Mine went perfectly.

This phone is blazing fast compared to the 6+. Glad I took the plunge.

The problem might have been (read that: probably ;) likely was) user related. I tried to rush it because I was getting ready to head out for HS football for the evening. Should have waited and done it overnite, but my 6 has battery issues, so I wanted out of it ASAP. I think it is set up properly. Most of the stuff that is important is also connected to my iMac, so it gets it from there too.

Having issues with closing an app. On the old 6, you pushed the button twice and the all the open apps showed up, this one (may have been 7 also) there is no 'push' to the button, so I can't seem to get that to work. Most of the time, I get Siri to open and I don't want that.

Did you skip the step in setup to customize how hard you have to press the home button?

My problem with the wireless sound sports is that they're not loud enough. I often watch shows on my iPad while on the treadmill and it's difficult to make out the dialogue if you're in a noisy gym. The wired soundsports are a lot louder.

Is this a good place to talk about the new iOS?  After hating pretty much every release since the first inclusion of allowing us to group icons probably 7 years ago, I finally like a new iOS. This version is amazing. It’s fast, it somehow freed up over 5gb of space for me on its own, and after some getting used to it, the keyboard redesign is awesome.

No, I did that, I guess I just like the 'feel' of the click on the earlier versions.

ETA: Something 'clicked' and it seems to be working better.

What hardware do you have? Haven't updated my 6s+ yet.

Not having tons of fun with new iPhone 8. This afternoon it started hanging on spinning icon (short dashes that spin around clockwise in a circle) and I can't get it to shut off to restart. I have tried plugging it into different chargers and an iMac, to no avail. I am now letting it drain, hoping that will cause a restart with new power.

Have you tried the new hard reset process?

That worked! I tried the old Home and on/off button and that didn't work. That must be the new version of that, since the Home isn't really a 'button' that you can 'press.'

THANKS!!!!

I haven't done it in my phone because it's a couple of years old. I did do it on my iPad Pro though and it's pretty nice.

The only issue is some freezing occasionally but it's rare and the benefits so far have outweighed that negative.

I am really enjoying the 8+.  It's ridiculously fast and the increased weight is really nice.  Between the less slick glass backing and the heavier phone, it doesn't feel like a little toy that is going to get dropped 100x.  I'm going naked for now and will see how it goes.

I was unsure if I was going to like going from the 6 to the 8+. But so far, I'm loving it. The phone doesn't really feel that big and it really is so much nicer than my 6. Much faster and the screen and camera look awesome.

Something happened to my battery on my iPhone 6 over the last month an the battery wear level has gone from ~75-80ish% Of original capacity to 55% of original capacity (1000 of 1800mAh) in just the last week or two. I'm assuming this indicates the battery is "Dying"?

My 6 battery of the last month or so had been pretty crappy too. Probably just at the end of the line

Replacing a battery is not the most expensive thing in the world. I kept my 6 with the intention of getting a new battery (~$60 at a local repair shop) and giving it to a son next year when he needs a phone.

Yeah just called a local shop who have kinda taken a stand on being the best price for local mobile work (reputable / using quality parts).

iPhone 6 : $37 for screen / $49 for battery

If the battery gets janky.. I'll just swap in a battery rather than rush to a new purchase.

Great deal on the screen. I paid over $100 for a new one because mine was stopping functioning randomly for a short period of time. Besides being annoying, I was afraid if I did turn it in, I'd have to pay because of need to turn in fully functioning phone with AT&T.
