The Apple iPhone Thread (1 Viewer)

Is this a good place to talk about the new iOS?  After hating pretty much every release since the first inclusion of allowing us to group icons probably 7 years ago, I finally like a new iOS. This version is amazing. It’s fast, it somehow freed up over 5gb of space for me on its own, and after some getting used to it, the keyboard redesign is awesome.
I feel like the new control center was broken in iOS 11.  I thought I would get used to it over time but no such luck.  Very cluttered and not good UI implementation.

I'm convinced they do glass to make you buy AppleCare. allow wireless charging
FYP
I tried putting a plate in my case so that I could use a magnetic holder in my van. I like to have that, since I use it my van for navigation on long trips, I like jut being able to take it on and off easily. I am now not able to use wireless charging. I have seen some other devices that allow both magnetic and wireless, and they have plates that are either square or round with a hole in the middle to allow better connection for charging. I don't need a new charger or holder, I just need the plate; does anyone know where to get them?

How does one go about getting one of these newfangled iPhone X’s?
download the apple store app.  You can log in October 27th? I believe to pre-order.

It'll show how much to replace your current phone.  I believe it's showing mine as $49.67 for two years or $999.99

planning on buying iphone X and paying in full.  Any benefit buying through apple vs directly through Verizon(my carrier)?
I always order through Apple.  In my experience it takes longer to order through carrier sites.

I wish they had sim-free version for those of us paying in full.  Sucks to have to go through extra step on apple site to lock into carrier.

Based on recent news it seems the supply is going to be very limited.  30 extra seconds might be difference getting in launch day and a few weeks later.

So even if you lock into a carrier, you could switch later right?  My understanding is there are no contracts anymore with Verizon.

yes. if you buy in full the phone is unlocked.  Verizon version works on all carriers.  That's why i don't get why they bother with carrier if you buy in full.

Buying via Apple for Verizon thru 24mo interest free payments (because free money)

Assuming I can pay off the phone if I want to leave Verizon?

Is there a weird credit Check or does it just tack onto my Verizon bill seamlessly

this is Late Thursday night / early Friday morning right? (2am CT)

how does the apple 24mo interest free payments differ from the upgrade program?

I want to get a X too but like Wozniak, I kind of want to see how it goes. I really wish it had fingerprint id AND facial. Sometimes I like to unlock on the sly in my pocket or while it lies flat on the nightstand. Anyone have concerns about how they'll use the X?

Apple upgrade = you don’t own the phone I don’t think, you turn in your old one for a new one every year or two years and keep paying? I think?

Interest free payment program spreads cost over 24mo and then you own the phone and stop paying if you’d like to stick with it.

I tnjnk?

ah ok. thanks.   yea i think id prefer to own the phone.

I could be wrong but I think that’s it.

Upgrade plan is good for folks who will upgrade annually. Payment is good for those who keep it over 2 years.

I think lol

Plan to just buy it outright why mess with anything else.

Because, free money. Thought I made that clear?
It’s not free if you have to worry about a credit check or dealing with Verizon. I’m just a big believer in paying full for my phones. IMO if a person can’t they should look for a cheaper phone.

But you may have your reasons.

I feel like I’m in an echo chamber... I DO have my reasons.... free money for 24mo. Have you noticed the stock market lately?  :)

I would have no problem paying full price for the phone.

I do the same things. Not sure how it’s going to work out, but I’m going to give it a go.

Why would you want to unlock your phone when you’re not looking at it? Eventually you’re going to look at it (kinda the purpose of unlocking it I presume?)

FaceID SHOULD work fine in complete darkness given the IR camera and 3D IR face mapping.

I do think it’s yours if you pay it off? I’ll have to check. I just did mine through Apple for the 8+. If nothing else, getting a new phone every year and Apple Care is worth the $6/month extra.

If facial recognition works in the dark from a 10 degree angle from the side, I'm good.

If you have to pick up the phone and stare  into it for a second, I can think of many situations where that would suck.

No doubt.. it will be interesting. I'm curious what the motivation is for all these people needing to unlock their phones at arms length while not looking at them.... or having to unlock fro ma 10 degree angle but looking head-on is impossible?   Anyone care to elaborate on these challenges?

IMO like many other Apple tech releases we will see:
• Android fans will shout from the tree tops "they've had it forever" (even though it was a less-secure infant-stage of the tech).
• A select vocal minority will actively seek out unrealistic expectations to ##### about "BUT FACE ID DOESN'T UNLOCK MY PHONE UNDERWATER WITH MY SCUBA MASK ON!"
• There will be some legitimate glitches/hiccups at launch
• The product will launch to generally positive reviews, with click bait blogs proliferating these problems, (that will be repeatedly shared by apple haters),  and "5 new tips" articles.
• The bugs will be gradually cleaned up over a couple months and things will work as advertised just in time for a surge of secondary market products and apps to take advantage of the new features.

This is what I did for the 8+. You own the phone after the payments if you decide to not trade it in.

So the extra charge is for AppleCare? If You're getting a new phone every year, wouldn't the phone be fully covered by standard warranty? AppleCare adds accidental damage right? What I don't like is it doesn't cover loss/theft like standard handset replacement programs.

Correct, its a loan with 0% interest the same that AT&T was for me. I don't get a new phone every year so I'll have this one paid off in two and then I can decide if I want a new one or if I want to keep this one.

If i buy through apple, is there a better option i should be looking at as opposed to apple care?  didnt know some places cover theft.

Carriers generally offer handset insurance. I Think I pay $6-7 a month with verizon for handset insurance on my phone. There is a deductible ($200?) but I get up to two replacements per year for any reason (broken/lost/stolen).

I am very hard on my phones... I think I had 5 iPhone 6's over the few years i've owned it. Apple replaced it 4 times (3 times free), and once I had to use handset insurance due to a lifeproof case failing on a swim.

If your phone is reimbursed through your employer, you may want to consider options that get the cost of the phone spread out on monthly bills.  Depends on how much your company reimburses and how diligent they check the bill.

I'm in the market for an iPhone 7 for my kid.  Is the best option doing certified refurbished through ebay or Amazon?   I use Ting, so I just need an unlocked iPhone.

Like I said, if I'm laying in bed and I want to check the time now, I just reach over and hit the home button and the time lights up enough that a barely awake glance from a horizontal angle tells me the time. I suppose a slight lift of the X will turn it on and display the time without needing facial ID? That would be great.

Sometimes I'm in a situation where I don't want to be obvious that I need to glance at my phone from within my pocket. I unlock it in my pocket and slide it out a few inches to see the display. In one YouTube X demo it seems the facial Unlock is very quick, as in a glance, but then you swipe up to Open the phone.

Maybe these won't be issues and they're fairly small regardless. I just brought up some questions about how the actual use of the facial ID will work vs. fingerprint ID. I doubt I'm alone.

If my X is on the table at a restaurant and I look at it without touching it, is it now unlocked?

Gotcha. Valid concerns. Not sure! I'll find out soon enough I suppose

As long as I pay my Verizon bill with my Credit Card they insure my phone. Not sure if you have to own the phone or if making payments is OK.

Verizon told me today that the monthly insurance payment wouldn't change, but they don't seem to know ANYTHING about the phone, trade in deals, deductible for replacement, etc.  Are you saying your CC has handset insurance included? Details?

Talking to them on the phone they kept saying they won't have info until tomorrow. "Oh you mean after they're sold out?"  Guy just laughed.

What a ####show...

verizon let’s me in early... then starts with crazy fees... $30 one time fee... $20 monthly line access fee (I don’t pay this now)... wtf?!

#### that... jump to Apple (which opens late). They have trouble “contacting carrier”. .. times out 3x.

#### it... I’ll buy it outright. Jump to buy outright and now it’s showing 2-3 week delivery but nov 3 pickup at Apple store near me. Then I get another “we have reserved an iPhone for you” screen with some reservation number but tells me I’ll get an email and have 24hrs to proceed?

Wtf

$30 is a standard add fee for a new line and the $20 is just how much you pay each month for that line (plus the device payment cost)
