The Apple iPhone Thread (5 Viewers)

Somebody told me last night that due to the Blackberry Storm not being so great that the iPhone is going to be available on Verizon in 6 months. Anybody else hear or read that anywhere?

oof, storm getting bashed all over.
Yeah, pretty much. I played with one the other day and have Verizon on a separate line. It has virtually identical, sluggish hardware as the other blackberries, except it's less responsive and still has a pretty barebones interface. I'm a Curve owner and I was pretty disappointed with it.

So I go into the App store to download some free apps, and it prompts me for an iTunes password. It also lists an email address that isn't mine.

I paid full price for the phone and it's obviously been owned by someone else before. I just got the phone today so I'm well within the 2-week window to cancel the service. How would you all play this?

edit: I didn't pay full price, but I did agree to the 2-year contract along with the phone. Still, $310 for a phone is no joke.

Does anyone have the second generation Iphone that's not sluggish? I used my cousin's phone for about a day to test it out and when I pull in multiple emails into my phone it's slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow and gets hung up a bit when I try to call. I've also figured out that if I want to delete a ton of emails this phone stinks since you have to tap one at a time each email then scroll and continue until I am ready to delete them all which then makes the phone get hung up a bit. Is this common?

Where did you get the phone? If you got it directly from Apple, go exchange it. If you got it through some HP program, you'd have to go back through them. If it works and is in perfect shape, just use it. It has an Apple warranty anyway.

Sluggish? No. Make sure you're software is up to date. If so, try a RESTORE.Mass email delete being a pain in the ###? Yes. It's a shortcoming that will hopefully be fixed eventually. :goodposting:

I got it along with a 2-year agreement from AT&T. This is a brand new line of service. Honestly, (not trying to be sarcastic or rude) is it outlandish for me to expect them to give me a new device? It seems to be in great shape, I just can't get past this password lock. Aren't you supposed to get a new phone with a new 2-year agreement anyway?

Wishful thinking. Apple just extended their contract for AT&T exclusivity through 2010. I see no reason for AT&T to let them out and help their #1 competitor. The only possiility would be a completely new product from Apple on the iPhone platform. Even then I don't know if it'd be covered under the exclusivity deal.

Yes it should be brand new. If you got it directly from AT&T you should take it back and get another one. Sounds like they gave you a returned item.

Thanks for the advice. What's really weird about it is that the email address listed is for someone at a business less than a few blocks from where this AT&T store is located. So returned, local iphones are being repackaged and sold at the local AT&T store as if they are new devices.

No the returns are to be sold as refurbs and completely clear with no email addresses attached.

I'm sure this is how it's supposed to work, but if the password lock was clear and the phone wiped I'd have never been the wiser. It bothers me that this can actually happen.

On a side, it's pretty incredible to me that AT&T uses iTunes to program their iPhones. Struck me as really odd.

Can anyone reccomend a bluetooth for the iphone? The reviews on the apple site or at both extremes for most they sell.

Looking to spend around $100 or less.

All-in-all, I am extremely happy with my new iPhone. Three things that bug me though:

1) Can't receive pictures via text (MMS)

2) No reminder tone or vibrate for missed calls/texts

3) Can't place an icon on the desktop to dial a number

There is a web app that does this.

Speed Dial is a free one that puts icons on your desktop. FaceCall is a $2.99 app that does the same thing but lets you put a pic for the icon and name. I just did a search for dialer and there are many to choose from. HTH.

ETA: There's a rotary dialer app too if you want to go back in time.

Awesome! YTFM!!!

Just updated to new 2.2 version and jailbroke it. With all the extra stuff you can do with a jailbroken iphone, it's very nice.

I don't get the reason of a jailbroken phone once the app store came online

now if a JB phone could play flash videos at hulu or use sling :bag:

If you are like me and prefer to write in landscape mode in the iPhone, go and download TouchType for just 99 cents at the iTunes App Store. This program will allow you to write your emails faster and with more accuracy than with the smaller portrait keyboard. When are you are done, click a button to send the text to the Mail application, where a new message will be created with your message text. Fill the To and Subject fields and you will be ready to go. [iTunes via TechCrunch]
Haven't tried this, but it looks interesting.

What are the benefits? :iPhone noob:
There are a lot of apps out there that aren't approved by the app-store that are useful for your iphone. One for me is a financial calculator based on HP business calcs. When you jailbreak your iphone, using something like QuickPwn, it installs a program called "Cydia" on your iphone that has a lot of packages that you can install that aren't "approved" by apple. Many are cool, some are nice on a low level, such as allowing you to use your iphone as a storage device.Apps like NetShare that aren't approved by apple can still be found on the net and installed on a jailbroken phone to use it as a modem, by sharing your 3G connection with a laptop. There are a lot of other benefits, such as being able to install cracked apps if you're into that sorta thing. But all in all, you have more options with what you can do with your iphone, including the ability to Unlock it, which means you can use the iphone on other GSM networks like t-mobile.PM me if you are considering doing this and I can point you in the right direction.

Can you get flash or slingbox on a jailbroken phone? Is there a web site that lists all the apps or something to that effect. I have never thought about doing it but would love to get flash or sling as I said a few posts up

There will be a SlingPlayer for iPhone 3G. I also read something about another one trying to beat Slingbox to it called Orb. Here is a

to a video showing SlingPlayer on an iPhone. Look at the other videos on the right and I noticed the video calling one. If someone watches it, let me know what you think (I didn't have time to watch right now, but will be back later).

I cant watch youtube at work but will check it out later,Is the slingplayer only available on 3G. I would not imagine so but that would really suck

The orb app can be used on an iPhone. Looks like the full version is $9.99, but if you have a TV tuner hooked up and your PC is on, you can stream TV and other media from your PC anywhere. This looks pretty sweet and would make a Slingbox with SlingPlayer totally unnecessary.

Does the orb play the slingplayer or do you need the orb player?
The orb web app is availabe and does not require a jailbroken iPhone as I thought. It looks like all you have to do is download the app for your PC at home, have a tv tuner working on your pc, and the web app on your iPhone. I have verizon fios and am going to try to make this work tonight. I will report back tomorow or the next day with my results. If this thing works as advertised, forget about slingbox.

I installed the OrbLive App on my iPhone and have the orb app running on my PC at home. I have been listening to music from my PC at home and looking at photos. This app is pretty sweet. I haven't had a chance to install the TV tuner on my PC yet, but it looks like it will work on my phone just like music or pics. At times the service is a little choppy, but not bad. I am really looking forward to seeing live television on it. You can also hook up webcams and select internet radio sites as well (those that you cannot get through AOL or others I assume). If the live television works, I am no longer interested in buying a slingbox unless my choice of channels is limited in OrbLive and Verizon Fios. I will post again when I am set up with the TV tuner. I highly recommend the trial version first. It does a random sample for each of the media folders and it's free.

My 2 coworkers just returned their BB Storms today at lunch. Quite frankly, I don't blame them.
Wow, if the iPhone is available on Verizon in 6 months that'd be huge.

 This already sounds cool. I don't have a 3g, so it would probably suck for me, but this could make it worth getting.

:shrug:tell them to pickup an HTC Fuze from AT&T
I want to see it too, but I don't know anybody with a Fuze yet.
