The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

I was surprised to find the new phone was noticiably heavier, I expected the larger hard drive would make it heavier, but I didn't think I'd notice it.

i picked up the new iphone today, quite possibly the best day of my entire life so far.

i didn't think they could improve things that much, but they did. speed, convenience, usability, etc. the best invention of the 20th century.

Seriously though, as over the top as that sentiment was - I broke down and bought one of these today as well and I've got to say: WOWI haven't even done much with it yet (no apps, haven't added my music yet, etc), but it didn't take me very long to realize that I'd found my soulmate. We're in love.

It really is ridiculously good. I admit I was anti-Apple for a while, but when I went from a windows mobile phone to an iPhone it is a light and day better user experience. Installing apps is easy, I already have a page of apps downloaded. Glad I got the 32GB over the 16GB, this phone will get a lot of use.How do I get the stock "maps" application to recognize my current location? Is that app crap or should I download something else? I downloaded Yelp which was free that seems to do a good job locating me and showing me bars/restaurants in my vicinity.

pretty cool. I guess that is considered the "nearby" icon.

It certainly blows away any existing phone, I can support this.

Any recommended accessories?
The Belkin Tune Base (for iPhone) is by far the best accessory I've bought for my iPhone. Make sure to get the one that says for iPhone on it though.
What does that do? Makes your iphone a radio?
Yes -- it's a combo car charger and FM transmitter so that you can play iPhone audio over your car's stereo while charging the phone. I'm really looking forward to the TomTom app/hardware bundle, which is supposed to do all that plus enhance GPS reception and give you turn-by-turn directions on the 3Gs:http://iphone.tomtom.com/

Just walked in to my local AT&T store and picked up the 32GB black yesterday. I didn't do any preordering or anything like that. It was the first painless iPhone activation I've done (out of three) even though it was the most complicated because I had to juggle my work and home phones around to qualify for the subsidized price. The release logistics from Apple/AT&T are way ahead of last year, so kudos for that. :)

As for the phone itself, it is snappy fast compared to my old 3G. Both are running the 3.0 firmware, but you can definitely tell that the 3Gs has more horsepower. The CPU and RAM boost definitely helps, but I'm betting the biggest change there is the updated PowerVR SGX graphics chip. Screen animations are a lot smoother and crisper on the 3Gs. Pretty sure that this is largely due to the 3.0 firmware using OpenGL ES 2.0 on the 3Gs while the 3G is only capable of supporting OpenGL ES 1.1.

And the new camera is a big improvement. Overall, I'm impressed with the update.

Man do I want the 3Gs, just can't justify paying the full $$ for it (not eligible for upgrade until May  ) . Oh well, hopefully get the 4G next year...

More Details on TomTom for iPhone: Mount Has its Own GPS Chip

Wednesday June 10, 2009

After TomTom's announcement of TomTom for iPhone at the Apple's developer's conference, I had quite a few questions that weren't answered in the demo. Fortunately, I was able to catch up with Tom Murray, TomTom's vice president for market development, to see what I could pry loose. Everyone has assumed that a company like TomTom or Garmin could create a terrific app for the iPhone, but TomTom's multi-featured, docking windshield mount took everyone by surprise. For example, in the demo, TomTom stated that the mount "enhances" the iPhone's GPS. Really? How so? Turns out, the windshield mount actually has its own GPS chip and antenna inside, and when the iPhone is docked to the mount, it relies on the mount's GPS, says Murray. Wow. So much for depending on the iPhone's anemic GPS. The mount will "enhance reception in challenging areas, such as among tall buildings," says Murray. I was also curious about how maps for TomTom for iPhone will be sold. Mapsets will be bundled with the app software, says Murray. For example, if you want North America, you will purchase the app version that includes the North America mapset. They will be downloaded and installed together on purchase. If you want a mapset for Europe, you will need to purchase the European version of the app separately, and you will have separate apps on your phone for each region. Here are some more details on the TomTom for iPhone windshield mount/dock:

The windshield mount/dock is optional. TomTom for iPhone app will run without it.

Mount has a built-in, standard one-eighth inch audio-out jack. Can run a cable to car aux audio.

It includes a microphone and speaker.

It enables hands-free calling via its mic and speaker.

It charges the iPhone.

Murray would not announce a release date (still officially "later this summer") for TomTom for iPhone, or provide pricing for the apps/mapsets, or windshield mount. Also, he could not comment on whether there would be a monthly fee associated with using the app (this seems unlikely, since Apple's App Store isn't set up for monthly-fee type billing). Interesting -- they're not doing the FM transmitter, then -- they're relying on the audio out to plug into the car stereo.

Is there something that makes it so you can play your itunes music through your car stereo. My wife's ride has a nice little plug, but my truck doesn't. Is there a device to do that or do I have to have that installed somewhere maybe? Does the Tom Tom do that?

There are some third party iPhone to FM modulators like the Belkin above -- i think that Griffin has a similar model. They also charge the phone. Looks like the TomTom is not going to do FM modulation, though, because it relies on an audio cable to connect to the car stereo. One thing I think is pretty important for the future -- part of the iPhone 3.0 OS rollout was setting *** Official *** specifications so that hardware devices can be written to interface with the iPhone. They specifically referenced the TomTom and some other hardware apps for monitoring blood sugar, etc. I would bet that in a couple of months, the number of hardware devices with direct iPhone support is going to grow dramatically, and that the quality of those devices will increase over what is available today.

I think I'm going to wait to see what comes out in a few months. In the meantime, I've got one of these that I bought from Woot! a few months ago. It doesn't charge the phone, but it broadcasts your iPhone audio over your car stereo via the FM radio. They only cost about $15, so it might be worth picking one up to use until all the new hardware accessories come out.

Thanks, Keith. So you plug it into your iphone and then tune your radio to a certain station? That sounds like a much better option versus installing a plug into the dash.

I have the griffin fm transmitter and I can't say enough bad things about it. To be fair the fcc has really neutered fm transmitter devices. I'm waiting for the tomtom etc. but might just replace the oem radio with an ipod or usb radio

Yes -- this is the main downside of using an FM transmitter. Depending on where you live/how crowded the FM dial is in your area and how close your car cigarette lighter is to your car's radio antenna, it may work pretty well but it may work *very* poorly. There's just no way to know without trying it out.The ones that are made specifically for the iPhone are pretty expensive, too -- normally in the range of $65-$100.

The one in my link above may be worth a try if you would prefer not to wait and don't really want to replace your car's factory radio with a model that has a headphone-in jack (or a custom docking cable for even tighter integration with iPods/iPhones). It should cost less than $20 with shipping so if it turns out to be a bad match with your truck and your local airwaves, you haven't spent too much on it. That one plugs into your car's cigarette lighter and it has a 1/8" cable coming out of it that you plug straight into your iPhone's headphone jack. Then you dial up an FM frequency that's pretty far away from any stations in your area and try it out.

I ran a google search, and I saw it mentioned earlier in the thread - but could someone let me know what the real benefit to jailbreaking the phone is? I mean, customization sounds pretty cool (changing icons/hiding those I don't want), but are there any 'worthwhile' 3rd party apps?

I looked into the FM transmitter, but stumbled across a pretty easy mod if your car stereo has an option for, or already has, a CD changer. Bought a $8 adapter off eBay that plugs into the back of the radio where the 8-pin CD changer connection would be (my car doesn't have a changer, but it was an available option) and with a $4 RCA adapter I now have an "Aux" in plug to run my Sirius or iPhone through my car speakers.

Nice work. I bought a USA Spec iPod/iPhone Interface that does basically the same thing. It was was $100 or so, but allows you to use all of your vehicle stereo controls to control the iPod, including steering wheel control buttons. It's pretty slick, you can make a playlist for each of the "six discs" and swap between them without ever touching the iPod. I have the cable running from the back of the stereo right into my glove box; just keep my iPod hooked up and everything is out of sight.

Apple sold over 1 million new 3Gs iPhones in three days. :lmao:

Apple sold over 1 million new iPhones

It’s hard to know which is more significant: Apple’s (AAPL) announcement that it sold more than 1 million units of the new iPhone 3G S last weekend — easily exceeding analysts’ estimates – or the fact that the news was accompanied by a quote from CEO Steve Jobs, his first since he went on medical leave in January.

“Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,” said Jobs. “With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.”

The same press release announced that six million copies of iPhone 3.0 were downloaded in the first five days after its release last Wednesday.

Earlier Monday several analysts had released their estimates of the 3G S’s weekend sales, including …

Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster: 750,000 units (see here)

Kaufman Bros. Shaw Wu: 600,000

Oppenheimer’s Yair Reiner: 400,000 – 500,000

Jobs, who usually gets the first quote in any Apple press release, had been noticeably absent in Apple releases issued after January. His reappearance — or at least the reappearance of words attributed to him — two days after the Wall Street Journal reported that he was recovering from liver transplant surgery, may signal the first stage of his return to Apple, scheduled to occur before the end of June.

UPDATE: In an addendum to his Monday morning report to clients, Piper Jaffray’s Munster notes that Apple’s weekend sales not only exceeded both his initial prediction (500,000 units) and his adjusted estimate (750,000), but they matched last years sales despite the fact that the new iPhone launched in just 8 countries vs. 21 countries last year.

Any recommended accessories?
I ordered this case.
Completely enclosed? I do have a tendency to drop my phone, but was thinking something like this might be sufficient.
I have been considering an iskin Fuze, or incase Slider...but have been using only the invisible shield, and not sure I will take to any case...
I have the incase slider case and I really like it. It fits really well onto the phone with out adding a lot of bulk, plus I like the feel over the neoprene (sp?). My son dropped my husbands phone A LOT and it cracked the sliding case but the phone was fine. In fact, the people at the store said it was the first time they ever saw one of the cases cracked. The only downside to the ase is that it fits so tightly it causes some air-bubbles on the invisible shield.

Took many careful attempts, but have the Incase Slider with the Power Support film on just right. Same thickness as my old Razr and not even a full inch longer, so it's nice and protected and fits comfortably in my pocket.

I'd like to try this but I have no clue how to do the mechanical end of it.

Maybe I should look into this.

I bought a Nokia N95 8GB a year ago largely because of the better camera (5 megapixels) and media player compared to the original iPhone. I'm considering one of these new iPhones because the larger screen makes it easier to read eBooks and there is a lot more 3rd party support. Anyone know how the media player/camera on the new iPhone compare? How about transferring music - Am I going to be able to just put whatever I download onto the iPhone in mp3 format or are they going to make things difficult?

I preordered and sold an N97, to a friend, I got a great deal on it.. but shied away from the effort of setting it up and maintaining it.You need itunes to bring in your own music. MP3s work well. my wife lives on her kindle software, on the iphone.don't know the specifics of iphone, but the N97, has like 5.1 megapial Carl Zeiss lens.. friend of my gets all warm, we he hears the name "Zeiss"the screen on the iphone is considerably larger.. not sure about pixel count.

No sir.So to update my quest to unlock my 2G, I was successful last night using redsn0w. I found a lot of conflicting instructions, but eventually found a guide that seemed appropriate. A lot depends on the model and firmware you are using. redsn0w effectively jailbreaks and unlocks the 2G, even with OS 3.0. I have toyed around with Cydia which is the main app for installing virtually an unsupported app you can get you hands on. The point of doing this to my 2G is for re-sale. Looks as though you can double the value by simply soft unlocking your phone. I've seen sales on eBay upwards of $300 for an unlocked 2G 16 GB which seems absurd to me, but so be it.Should I remove the factory installed SIM card before selling it? I'm assuming it has no value to anyone at this point. Anyone using the unlocked phone will just use their current SIM to run the phone on any network they choose.

Definitely remove the sim.

I sold my 2G a year ago after unlocking it. Some guy overseas bought it for several hundred dollars. It certainly is worth trying, as you can get most of the cost of the phone back, assuming it was subsidized to the largest degree.

My MIL wore down AT&T with calls to complain about the new iPhone coming out after she just bought a 3G in April. Her beef is the reps at the AT&T store told her there was no new iPhone coming out when she asked if she should wait. I told her after I found out she bought one that she should take it back and wait until June, but additional calls to AT&T only had them keep telling her there was no new phone coming out, just the new OS. I bet her $1000 a new one would come out but my FIL wouldn't let her agree to it.

Anyway, she was burnt and eating crow so she pestered them for a week. They finally agreed to give her 7 free months of the iPhone data plan ($30/month) to help subsidize the cost of upgrading so soon. Plus she's getting the $30 iTunes credit because she has to wait a couple days for her phone because they were sold out when she went to the store on Sunday.

My MIL wore down AT&T with calls to complain about the new iPhone coming out after she just bought a 3G in April. Her beef is the reps at the AT&T store told her there was no new iPhone coming out when she asked if she should wait. Your MIL sounds like a PITA. I feel for you.

I'd like to try this but I have no clue how to do the mechanical end of it.
It wasn't that bad. I just ran a google search on how to remove the stereo from my dash. After that, all you do is plug the cord into the back of the stereo unit. I ran the out cable through a gap in the back side of my glove box so when the box is closed there are no visible wires or iPod. All said it took maybe a half hour (I had a stripped screw in the dash I had to overcome). Just take your time so you don't scratch your dashboard.

I thought more on this today and I have a friend who did this and it works nice. But then I remembered I have an iphone and I wouldn't want it shut in the glove box. So I think I might have to try another route.

The cord is plenty long enough to reach across to talk on the phone while it's plugged in. I just snake it around the bottom corner of the glove box so the box closes while the cord extends out. I do this to talk while I charge, listen to Pandora or one of the other radio apps. I have an older iPod I leave in the glove box but use the unit for my iPhone as well.

If I don't have a ton of music is there any reason to get the 32GB? Should I spend the extra $100 and get that or is it completely unnecessary? Everyone just getting the 16GB?
