The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

So youre going with the EVO over the IPhone 4?
People say to choose the carrier before you choose the phone, but this is one time I wanted to ignore it. I was hoping Steve would pull a couple rabbits out of his hat today but everything he announced was in line to what was leaked. I really dig the new resolution/dpi on the screen, but other than that, there's nothing really compelling that the iphone has that the EVO doesn't.My main issue is with ATT. If the EVO didn't exist, I'd probably suck it up.

Now I'm eagerly awaiting the announcement of the ipod touch 4 this September to use with my EVO.
Anyone know if there's a way to tether an iPod Touch to an EVO without paying for the Sprint tethering? The free tethering android apps I've seen require a USB connection.
Yes you can, if you root your phone, which is very easy. I currently tether my touch to my Droid (and my Windows Mobile phones). I've told everyone buying an EVO not to pay for the wifi hotspot since it would absolutely be available for free with root. But since you can get the hotspot for as low as $19/month, it's worth if you don't want the hassle. http://www.androidcentral.com/free-wifi-te...-rooted-evo-4gs
Easy for everyone, or easy for a tech geek?

Prepare to be shocked. Between the publicity (negative) on the data caps, the fact that a lot of folks already don't like ATT, and the slew of amazing phones out there or coming to market before summer's end, I would be surprised if the net gains in new customers going to iPhones from other networks improves at all.
No way. AT&T reported their highest ever number of new subscribers in 1Q '10. And that was with year-old iPhone 3Gs hardware. What you're not taking into account is the number of cell phone users that are moving to "smart phones" for the first time. The expansion of the smart phone market alone will generate a sales increase, and the new iPhone 4 will ensure that large number of those move over to AT&T for their first iPhone.
Today AT&T Wireless' parent company, AT&T, released its Q1, 2010 earnings report. The wireless unit of AT&T reported a net addition of 1.9 million new subscribers, the most the company has ever posted during a first quarter.

Pretty much easy for everyone. If you can follow written descriptions and know which end of a usb cable is which, you can root your own phone.

Looks like the people have spoken. Hearing a lot of EVO talk. I understand Apple and their cutesy little devices will never die but the fanboy base is shrinking. There's now some challengers out there. Jobs can no longer slap together a slim metallic device thats capable of making phone calls and playing solitaire and tell the masses he's changed the world.

Of course it well sell more then the EVO. But the idea is that it isn't "better" enough to kill it (and Sprint) in its tracks like the Palm Pre disaster almost did. APple is going to sell a ton of these things. And they'll sell a ton of the one they announce next June and so forth. The EVO, new BB's, and a variety of other new devices are all feeling a lot better today; the "OMG I HAVE TO HAVE AN IPHONE!" wave isn't going to materialize any more then normal after today.
Hi Abe,I'll believe it when I see it. I can see your reasoning if we're talking about a phone that sold over 50 million units to tech geeks, but we're not. I'd say less than 5% of them are holding a tech spec checklist like You, Goonsquad or Card Trader. You're basing too much on your checklist. The iPhone is mostly used by users with a average to below-average understanding of what new tech on the market offer what. The iPhone kills it when it comes to reaching that market.

I'll bet a huge chunk of iPhone users watching the news tonight will actually believe these are all brand new features on a phone. My mom and dad have no idea what an Android or EVO is. Why would they? They don't get the same attention as the iPhone.

Just look around the net, radio and TV today. Apple's is just as much in overhype-drive as it was with the last few releases. On my way back to work after lunch even the political talk shows were praising the iPhone 4 with another "...looks like Apple has done it again". I agree tech-wise, the iPhone isn't in a league of it's own in today's market, besides the Android forums you read or some tech websites, the hype train hasn't changed one bit from the 3Gs launch. Just look around ...CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and of course the tech pages like Gizmodo and Engadget. They all have it as front page news. The TV stations local and national will discuss it tonight. Then the hype will be back in late June when all the iPhone fans line up in front of stores.

If you're a person who just found out about the new features of iOS4, what the new iPhone looks like and video chat, I'd say you're pretty excited to upgrade your iPhone 2G, 3G or 3Gs.

just my :hophead:

I agree. I've said plenty that they're going to sell a ton of these. My assertion is that Apple didn't deliver anything magical today to stem the coming onsluaght of other choices (Android, BB 6, Win Mo 7). Of course the iPhone will sell like hotcakes. Of course the TV spots and other ads will get tons of attention and result in sales. But the reasons to leave SPrint, TMo, VZW etc. to go to ATT aren't as strong as they were last time around, which weren't as strong as the time before that, which wasn't as strong as the original release.

I don't know, feel free to look it up yourself. My point is the smart phone market is expanding at great rates, the new iPhone will get enough headlines to grab a good number of new subscribers. Android will continue to see huge growth as well being on every carrier. A perfect example of mainstream press: CNN article. Only one mention of Android, no talk of comparison specs or Android phones did video chat first. It's a huge upgrade over the 3Gs, and that's the story 99% of the public will hear.

Can anyone tell me what getting AT&Ts GPS for $9.99 adds to the iPhone? What does it give you that the Map app doesn't?

I'm trying to compare prices of the various plans. Sprint's plan comes with GPS included.

But you're acting as this all happens in a vacuum where all things are equal when they aren't. ATT's network sucks. Its prices are too high. There are caps on data. Parents buying phones for their kids aren't jumping the whole family to ATT b/c junior wants an iPhone. College kids paying for their own plans will start having other very good choices available that are more affordable. Businesses will continue to be woo'ed by RIM's enterprise sales folks. As I keep saying, Apple will sell tons of iPhones and this version will be no exception. But this is not going to be a "wow" device that convinces families, businesses, and current in-contract subscribers of other networks to race over to ATT (like the first iPhone did).

This is correct. The media feeds on Apple, they love them and will trumpet anything they give them. Apple as a company is a genius at marketing. While there are already Android phones on the market comparable to the new iPhone they don't market as well, other than Motorola for the Droid release. The Incredible which is an amazing phone didn't get the press it deserved. The EVO is getting more press but it's because it's actually truly revolutionary.

Love it. Reminds me of your old "Microsoft's Courier is the iPad Killer!!!" and "Palm Pre is SO MUCH better than the iPhone!!!" schtick.

Keep it coming.

This is how brilliant Apple is, they announce a phone and current phones on the market that already contain the features that were announced are "catching up" to them. Truly amazing...magical even.

So we're currently on ATT with 3 iPhone 3G's and are eligible to upgrade early.

Looking at iPhone 4 vs EVO and at this point I'm thinking we'll stick with the new iPhone if that's the comparison.

I guess the other option I would consider is the next Droid type phone depending on how soon it would come out.

Am I missing something about the EVO that would make it a better choice?

When is the next generation supposed to come out and do you think it would it be worth the wait?

Looking at generations of phones, not who could get theirs out a month earlier I guess.

I honestly love Palm's WebOS. Using Android now, there's a few things I definitely miss about WebOS. As far as the Courier goes, that was a joke. There's no joking when it comes to the iPhone to me. Anyone I know who uses the iPhone with the exception of serious fanboys say the same things. "It's great as long as you don't actually have to use it as a phone". Just comments like that. I actually recently lent a buddy money so he could pick up one of the new Blackberries. Said he was tired of not being able to make calls, dropping calls and hearing people on the other end of the iPhone. That's not shtick they all say the same thing. Great little device, ####ty phone :banned:

4G.Video calls over normal networks, not just WiFi.

Not on ATT.

Hotspotting for up to 8 devices. Free tethering as of today. Much better prices and network on Sprint. You can be up and live with your phone maxed out ready to do anything on Sprint for about $100 a month. iPhone is closer to $150. Why exactly are people willing to pay an extra $50 a month? Mario Kart

Honestly, what point are you trying to make? That this isn't a "revolutionary" product? OK, I agree. The point is: it doesn't have to be. :  Also, Apple is making huge strides into the business market. 40% of new iPhone sales last quarter were to business users; they are putting a huge dent in WinMo and slowly eating away at RIM. iOS 4 has even better Enterprise capabilities. Apple is beginning to take business users seriously.

You not familiar with Finless/Clifton's shtick? Come on now...

The best shtick is his other account.... the one where he was asking for relationship advice and outed himself by not switching accounts

That's part of the problem. There's no unified Android phone. People don't necessarily want to do all the research required choosing one phone over another. Each of my parents went to Sprint & Verizon stores recently and bought phones "that looked like an iphone". They didn't want to switch carriers.Frankly, the droids they purchased, Motorola and a Samsung are not doing anything to help sell more product. The fact that these phones vary wildly from the Samsung Moment to the EVO, being either subpar or stellar don't help unify people's opinion.

Say 'iphone' and people generally know what to expect.

Side question: people never seen to mention that the iphone is also an excellent ipod. How do these new phones compare as MP3 players?

Android is an OS, the iPhone is a phone that has it's own OS. Any manufacturer can put Android on their device, there will never be a "universal" Android phone. There are commercials on TV from Motorola, Samsung and HTC that all feature Android phones. It's not up to Google to advertise, it's about the carriers and Manufacturers. Apple advertises because they are the manufacturer.

Understood that there will never be a universal android and that is part of the problem. How many iphone challengers come to market and fail? All of them. Android looks to have the most promise, but even their phones become obsolete in a couple of months. If I bought an HTC Hero 6 months ago, I'd be pissed. Palm Pre? same. There are a hundred of these phones that are forgotten in no time. But each one is compared to the iphone at launch.Your looking at the market from a developer's perspective. I'm looking at it from a consumer's.I (and most consumers) just want my phone to do everything it's advertised to do and do it well.

Fail? Howso? The Moto Droid, Droid Incredible, EVO, and a handful of other Android phones have been very successful. How are you determining failure? All of these phones do "everything it's advertised to do and do it well". I guess I don't see your point at all. Do you have one?

Easy dude, he's not insulting your grandmother or anything, are you some sort of android shareholder? You seem to get worked up pretty easy if someone doesn't get hard at the mere mention of a droid phone.

Thanks for joining the conversation "dude". I'm honestly trying to understand his point, maybe it's flying right over my head, but I don't see a point and am trying to get it out of him. If you can help with that then great, otherwise feel free to run along.

#1, go with the carrier that offers the best coverage/price for you. If ATT is great in your area, you love your iphone, you have a lot of paids apps, and you don't mind ATT's higher costs and upcoming data caps (you might actually save money if you don't use a lot of data or you can be grandfathered into the unlimied plan), get the new iphone. If Sprint works well in your area and you're open to moving away from the iphone OS, here are the reasons why *I* would get an EVO over an iphone:

-Cheaper plans

-4.3" screen vs 3.5". Go check it out in a store, this is a huge difference when you watch video.

-4G. If you're in PA, there's actually great 4G WIMAX coverage there. No 4G in LA yet :excited: This alone might make it a no-brainer. http://www.clear.com/coverage

-Wifi hotspot. You can connect up to 8 devices at the same time.

-Video calling over 3G/4G. I know some people could care less about video calls, or video calls on wifi only, but this is a big deal for me. My kid and his grandparents do video calls on skype all the time. Doing it in the car, on the go, etc, would be awesome for us.

There's other things that the EVO has and the iphone doesn't (HDMI out), but I don't care for these personally.

The next "major" phone coming out is the Droid Xtreme on Verizon, 4.3" screen, 720p video, no front cam. Released sometime between July-Nov of this year. If I had to be on Verizon, this is the phone I'd wait for. If Sprint is an option, I wouldn't wait. Get the EVO.

I keep seeing people on this board write that, but for my 450 minute plan with unlimited data, the iPhone plan is still cheaper (74.99 v 79.99 450 minute EVO plan). It only gets more expensive if you add unlimited texts versus 200.

I'm looking at it from a consumer's.

I (and most consumers) just want my phone to do everything it's advertised to do and do it well.
Seems to me he's more caught up in the "cool/hip" factor rather than performance. From that perspective it's a lot easier for a consumer to just buy the newest iPhone. Right now it is not a bad thing because the iPhone is still one of the best out there, but in the future I can see HTC pull ahead.

If you can help with that then great, otherwise feel free to run along.
dude what is your beef?

This is pretty typical for Card Trader in an Apple thread. Still not so sure why he and the others like him put in so much effort. Maybe they're shorting AAPL or something.

Financial suicide. Just because I prefer the Android OS doesn't mean I don't recognize how awesome of a company Apple is

I'd like to know this also. I use my iphone as an ipod more often than any other function on the device -- and I really like the ease of using itunes to organize everything on my iphone. Does the Evo have the same type of user control?

The EVO etc are catching up to the iPhone and this was a pretty huge upgrade to keep them securely at the #1 phone spot.
This is how brilliant Apple is, they announce a phone and current phones on the market that already contain the features that were announced are "catching up" to them. Truly amazing...magical even.
Your panties appear to be in a wad. Relax. Its a phone.

we'll i was on the fence between the EVO and iphone and am going with the iphone.

I went to check out the EVO in person and i couldn't imagine holding it up and using it as a phone, just way too big, would be a bit embarrassing using it in public. Also all the reviews about the battery running out after a few hours spooked me.

I'll stick with the tried and trusted Apple as i know they put out solid dependable products. would have liked to see a Verizon option but ATT is improving their network.

No, everyone else is wrong and he's being perfectly reasonable about it.

And :yucky: at anyone switching to Sprint, no clue why they merged with Nextel only to pick up a bunch of towers that only 10% of their phones can even utilize.

Their network is in worse shape than AT&T.

And trust me, AT&T is putting a lot of work into their new LTE program.

It's not a wrong or right debate, "dude". Right now it's all about Apple showing a product and touting features that are already out. HTH. :yucky:
Hey dude, you can mock me all you want, but at the end of the day everyone thinks your taking this a bit too seriously, and your best defense is to mock.Relax, guy.

Don't take it personal, dude. Now can the Apple fanboys get back to debating the Android fanboys about which OS is better and which phones are better...this has gotten completely off track.

IPhone 4 was announced today, it has shaken the tech world and everyone is buzzing about it! (ok, well not so much)
