It was initially announced that the new OS wouldn't be available for iPad until the Fall. Kind of sucky, but oh well. I'm jailbroken at this point anyway, but I'd rather have the new OS and not be. I'm guessing it's not an automatic port, since the iPhone4 has double the memory (I think?) and some other different hardware, not to mention a different display. But I still wonder if it would even run in its current form -- with some bugs perhaps -- on iPad. Only a matter of time until some nerd tries and it's reported on Gizmodo or engadget....

Few people I know who were thinking about getting the Ipad now have ditched that for the Iphone upgrade. Why not if the IPad won't have the new OS

I was on the fence on whether to get the Ipad. Right when I decided to get it, that's when Gizmodo leaked the new Iphone. Totally killed all desire to get the Ipad.I think next year's version is going to be fantastic, assuming Apple incorporates some of the Iphone hardware upgrades. I'm pretty sure the "retina" display won't be feasible on the Ipad due to costs but I hope I'm wrong.

If you have a ***8 GB*** 3rd Gen Touch, it won't work. Even tho it's considered 3rd Gen, the 8gb version is the same as the 2nd Gen. Multitasking will work on the 16GB+ versions of the 3rd Gen Touch.

Inches from having this now as well. Woohoo...FOLDERS. MULTITASKING. A much needed upgraded. This update is a legitimate iPhone Killer...Oh wait. This is the iPhone. Damn. I think we can all safely bury the iPhone Killer talk any time soon. If the rumors are true that the iPhone will work on Verizon soon, this will be the endgame for the phone wars (yes there will be other handsets, but the developers will stay with iPhone, iTouch, Ipad). And that's the real battleground.

Yep, you can update. You just won't get full functionality on a 3G, but definitely worth upgrading.

So, my Iphone 3g 8G is pretty much useless over the next few months when my apps start updating and I don't have the newest OS?

Anyone know what my issue is? I plug in my phone. I go into Itunes and click Iphone where it says Devices. It says a newer version of Iphone Software is available (version 4.0) click update to get it. I click it and it says this version of Itunes 9.1.1 is up to date???? nothing happens?

I think you need Itunes 9.2 for OS4? Update your Itunes to 9.2 first, then try updating your Iphone.
