The Apple iPhone Thread (5 Viewers)

If I don't have a ton of music is there any reason to get the 32GB? Should I spend the extra $100 and get that or is it completely unnecessary? Everyone just getting the 16GB?
I had the 16 GB original iPhone and really never came close to loading it up. Then again, it wasn't my primary music device. I like to add and remove things to keep the playlist fresh. The considerations as I see it are how you use it. If you want to put a ton of music on it, you'll fill it up fast. Also keep in mind that a 3Gs takes video which takes up tons of room. If you see yourself doing much of that 32 GB might be worth it. I didn't even hesitate to get the 16 GB model, however. Past usage patterns dictated which I would get.As an update, my old iPhone (jailbroken/unlocked) just sold on eBay for $265. Took all of four hours. :headbang:

Thanks. 16GB it is.

I'm leaning towards the 16. The only reason for me to get the 32 would be for the extra space for video

The cord is plenty long enough to reach across to talk on the phone while it's plugged in. I just snake it around the bottom corner of the glove box so the box closes while the cord extends out. I do this to talk while I charge, listen to Pandora or one of the other radio apps. I have an older iPod I leave in the glove box but use the unit for my iPhone as well.
Good to know.

I would definitely go with the 32G. I didn't plan on getting anywhere close to the 16G but I'm already there through a combination of apps, movies, and music (mostly music). But I have yet to watch any of the movies (all two of them I think but even those take up a lot of space). I could see rotating them more. Like only load on movies for flights. And there's some apps I could definitely jettison. I don't understand rotating music mixes or however that works. Would happen way too much for me to keep track of.

Getting super ticked at the At Bat 2009 app. Upgraded to 3.0 on my Touch even though it cost me $10. The At Bat 2009 program is supposed to have video now. But everytime I try to watch a game it says that it has to verify my location due to blackout rules and then can never figure out where I am. So it times out and won't let me watch the game.

I don't know if this has been mentioned or not, but this site: http://help.benm.at/usa.php allows you to download a program directly to your iPhone and unlock the tethering feature.

I unlocked it but have not tried connecting it to a pc to make sure it works. It looks legit, it allows USB or Bluetooth access.

:excited:
I gambled and installed the unsigned file, looks like it does as promised, have not tested it on my laptop yet, will try it when I get home.

Finally pulled the trigger and bought my first touch (32GB). I have some questions that hopefully one of you can be so gracious enough to answer for a noob :)

-I just bought the thing yesterday, so I'm assuming that I have the latest model (3rd generation touch)? Or is the 2nd generation the latest? The reason I'm asking is b/c I installed the latest version of itunes and I got a message saying something about dl'ing the latest software update (v3.0?), and in the notes portion it says the update is only for the iphone or 2nd generation touch.

-Is there a general consensus regarding the best case to use? Also what about the screen protector? I was planning on getting one of those clear hard cases to protect the back side and then one of those flip (book style) leather cases for added protection. What brands/models are good?

I haven't read through the first 50 pages of this thread (mainly b/c I'm sure most of it is pertaining to the iphone)... so please exuse me if these have been covered already.

Ditto, I gotta figure out how to pair my laptop with my phone.I read my laptop (Lenovo S10 Ideapad) has the ability to use Bluetooth, I think I may need to install a driver or something...

Any help would be appreciated on that front.

What's the deal with the headphone jack? Is it the same as an iPod? And, if so, are they the same as a normal headphone jack?

how the heck do you activate/find the voice commands on the 3Gs? Can't find it anywhere....do they work?
Press and hold the home button (round button at bottom) until you hear a beep. Then let go, and say something like "Call Mom Home" and it'll call the home number under mom's contact. Or "Play artist John Lennon" or "Play more like this" or "What song is this" when a song is playing.Give it a try.

Have you ever paired a bluetooth device with a computer?

No.Although I have never tried either.

No.Although I have never tried either.
Are you sure your computer has bluetooth? If so, go to the control panel, find the bluetooth panel, make sure bluetooth is enabled.THen on your iphone, enable bluetooth as well. I think then you go back to bluetooth on your computer and have it scan for new devices. THen follow onscreen instructions. At some point, you'll have to enter a passcode to pair the devices, I think it'll be shown ON your iphone, and you enter that code into your computer's bluetooth program and it should pair.Bluetooth on iphone is under settings>General, then click bluetooth and turn it on.

Thanks, I have a Lenovo S10 Ideapad, I think I may need to install a driver, I don't imagine that is incredbly complicated, I'll have to play with this when I get home.

How do you cap lock, or easily use a capital letter other than hitting the arrow up button before each capital letter?

Is the new Iphone slightly bigger than the first generation Iphones? Just wondering if I need a new case.
I know they are the exact same size (form factor) as the 3G, if there are different cases between first gen & 3G you are probably screwed.

How do you cap lock, or easily use a capital letter other than hitting the arrow up button before each capital letter?
Just keep your left thumb over the arrow up button, and type with your right finger. All will be in caps.
I type with two thumbs in landscape. This will not work for the letters on the first 1/4 of the keypad (Q,W,E,A,S,D,Z,X,C.) Maybe I have Megan Fox thumbs that can't reach. On my BB I could just hold down the letter an extra half-second and it would capitalize it. It was also easy to put cap lock on. I was hoping there was a similar trick for the iPhone.

Another question: how do I put pictures on the phone? I know how to get the ones I take with the camera off, but putting other ones on wasn't as simple as dragging them to the device in Windows.

Found it:
Apple’s iPhone sports a fairly impressive virtual keyboard that does its best to predict what you are typing. It even automatically activates the Shift key at the beginning of a sentence, and shuts it back off after you type the first letter. By default, however, entering a string of all uppercase letters, like CAPS LOCK, is kind of a pain because you have to tap the Shift key before each letter. The iPhone does include a Caps Lock feature -- the trick is finding it so you can turn it on. Here’s how: Tap Settings Tap General Tap Keyboard Tap the Enable Caps Lock slider The Caps Lock slider is like a toggle switch. Tapping it once enables the feature, tapping it a second time shuts it back off.Using the Caps Lock is really simple: Quickly tap the Shift key twice. Instead of the usual glowing arrow that tells you your next letter will be upper case, the whole Shift key turns blue. Tapping the Shift key again turns Caps Lock back off.

Is there a way to save pictures from the safari browser or an app (like facebook) to use elsewhere (like contacts)?
You can take a screen shot of any image on your phone but holding the home button and pressing the top on/off button.
When I try that it goes to Voice Control. :coffee:
Then you're probably not pushing the top on/off button quick enough after holding down "home." Voice control is after 2 or so seconds of holding down home.

This is working just fine for me. Can other apps find your location?

 Good call. Now how do I edit the thing? Would like to crop and rotate if possible.

I know it automatically gives you the option to crop if you select it as a contact image, the only other option would be to email the image to yourself and use your comptuers editing software to resize/rotate.

the little booklet that comes with the phone is a must read

double tap home button while locked brings up ipod controls

tap and hold over a word to get magnifying glass to move insertion point when you make a typo (instead of deleting the entire word to fix a spelling mistake)

double tap home button from within any application brings up your favorites screen (favorite contacts)

OK... was trying to avoid transferring between the computer and iPhone. The contact image cropping/resizing is good enough I guess.

Anyone else here have the NES emulator for their jailbroken iphone? Just noticed the latest version for OS 3.0 is now $5.99 while the last version was free. Loaded the older version and it no longer works on 3.0. Oh well....I have moved on to the SNES emulator and found a torrent w/758 games. If anyone is interested, let me know.

I do like the copy and paste function in 3.0. The voice memo thing is pretty lame IMO.

FYI:

Not sure if anyone else had this, but my chrome tip fell off the silent switch.

I took it to the apple store, and they gave me a new phone for free. It was considered a "manufacturer defect". Pretty sweet since I was about to just super glue the thing back on (I don't think it would have made a difference).

Obviously you don't want anything to go wrong, but I like that they just took care of it, no questions asked.

Yeah, they're great about that, my screen wasn't level, one side was indented and me and my OCD couldn't deal with it.They swapped it out in 5 minutes.

My hubby had the same issue with his (my son dropped the phone countless times) and they fixed it no problems.

One more dumb question: Does it matter where I buy an I-phone? I can go to Best Buy (I think) or the Apple Store. Will one place give me better service should something go wrong?

Just caught a call from the mailroom that they're bringing me my 32GB 3GS in one hour! I know I'm way behind the times in this thread, but I'm :lmao: .

IPhone question.

Can I buy a Iphone use like a IPOD touch until fall when I will activate it???

My current contract with verizon is over in fall but I kind of want one now. Does it make any sense?

You could, but you'd be paying full price for it. If you want a subsidy, AT&T or whoever will activate it. That's how they justify giving you $400 or so off the purchase price.
