The Apple iPhone Thread (1 Viewer)

I like the new search function but was disappointed to find it doesn't search the phone numbers in your contacts.
 You mean the actually numbers themselves???
Yeah, I'm weird that way. I may miss a call at work (different phone) and see the number displayed when I return and wonder who it was. If the search function supported phone numbers, I'd be able to type the number into the search box and see if whoever it was that called was in my contacts list.I'm curious as to why the search function doesn't include phone numbers but does include contact names.
Just enter the number into the phone like you were dialing it, and any contact with that number will show up.

The text message preview thing is kinda nice, but I had to turn it off. Way too much train wreck potential there.
Man, I had NO IDEA you could turn off the preview feature and I've had the iphone for a year. So, what does it look like when you get a text?
You hear the alert, and the same box pops up but it only says the name of the sender (or their number if it's not from one of your contacts).

Buddy of mine wants to sell me an 8GB 3G iphone, minus his simcard. If bought, I have no intentions of using it as a phone. With a new simcard, would I be able to use it basically as an ipod touch? All I'd wanna do is just capitalize on the ipod aspect of it, and being able to use the wifi in hotspots.

Did a search and kept coming up with different answers on this. Maybe somebody here did something similar.

Using mine as a modem for my computer as we speak.
How long have you done it? I've read you have to jailbreak it, and PDANet is the easiest app to get it done. I'm worried about getting caught tethering and having a huge bill. I wouldn't be downloading torrents, just typical websurfing. Anyway to monitor how much data you've used?

I don't think they would notice unless you are doing it all the time

Went to the Apple store today to upgrade. Very fast & smooth except for my case. Somehow I ended up with an ipod touch case. Have to be careful tomorrow before I can exchange it a night. My1st gen iphone was dropped about 50 times in the case I had with zero damage.
So you can upgrade 3GS to a new iphone?
a little late but yes
Sorry, I think I meant 3G. So you just trade it in like a car?

I just dropped $880 on a Mac Mini :bag: ($599 + $49 iWork '09 + $98 keyboard/mouse + $71 4GB ram + $63 Tax)

2.0 GHz C2D (1066MHz FSB) w/ 3MB L2 cache

4GB DDR3 Ram ($71 from Amazon)

120GB HD (5400 rpm) - probably won't bother to upgrade

Generally no. You don't give back the old phone, generally speaking. If you're eligible for an upgrade, it really just means that you get a discount on the new phone. Full subsidy is $400 or so, early upgrade is $200 subsidy, but that's not because you get paid for returning your previous phone. It's because you're extending your contract.

Jailbreak for 3GS is out and it works. Now, all 3.0 phones can be jailbroken.

I'm still looking around to see if there's anything cool worth installing from cydia.

Any reports of turning the phone into a brick by doing this?Let me know if you find a cool app from cydia. I'm interested in tethering, maybe with PDANet.

No reports, and from previous versions Redsn0w makes it much easier to jailbreak than in olden times. Very painless. Will keep y'all updated about cool apps. One, while not free (4.99 for now) is IM. Lots of chat clients combined into one app for iphone, and it stays connected after you close it out. Very nice interface.

Looks like if you are a DirecTV subscriber who has NFL Sunday Ticket with Superfan, you will be able to watch any game this season LIVE on your iPhone. (Any game that is not blacked out in your home Zip code due to sellout rules, that is.) DirecTV is planning to stream them via their SUPERCAST app. :towelwave:

Tried to install the MMS app and it crashed my phone. Had to restore, re-jailbreak, and get all my stuff back on. Use extreme caution if you are attempting this installation. If you are successful with the MMS, let me know.

any good free RSS Feeders out there? I used Viigo on my BBerry and liked it a lot. Didn't see an app for them.

I know the general one is only a buck or 2 but w/ so many great apps I plan on buying I was hoping to pinch a penny here being Viigo was free for my other phone.

Would you suggest buying the iPhone at the Apple store, or at an AT&T store?

I've heard that the employees at the AT&T store will do a better job of setting up your AT&T account.

Based on the zoo that I witnessed on multiple visits to the Apple store, I would suggest you get set up at the AT&T store. The only problem I had was having to wait "7-10 business days" (which was actually only just 3 days before Fedex delivered my iphone  ). It took a couple of extra days for my wifes iphone to arrive (I got the 32gb and she got the 16gb - must be a higher demand for the 16gb).And if you do the AT&T store, I would highly suggest that you make an appt over the phone (or else you'll get stuck putting your name on a piece of paper and end up standing around for a long time).

No one around town had any of the 16GB 3Gs in stock, until a dude at the Apple Store called me back. Drove over, walked out 15 minutes later with my iPhone completely setup. Very good experience. Store was packed but I didn't have to wait.

It seems I can't send a text with a picture nor can I receive it. Anyone else having this problem?
I just upgraded my 1st Gen iphone to 3.0 and was expecting this feature as wellbut when I went to my photo album and selected a picture, it only gave me theoption to send the image in an email but no text message option. And no special/newmenu in the text message app to send an image. So, does 3.0 come with this feature or not? Confused...

I believe the texting of pictures is an AT&T issue. The iphone can do it but AT&T has to catch up. There's a timeline on this but I can't remember when it is.

I also heard that at the Apple Store, they can't set up a Family Calling plan. I also get a discount through my employer. Can they apply that discount at the Apple Store? I understand probably not on the iPhone, but what about on the calling plan?

That was another thing about my situation... My wife gets the discount through her employer and we set up a family plan as well. I was told that the Apple store can/will honor the employer discount on the service (not sure about setting up family plans though).*The discount is only on the services (not the phone ).

Is it just me or do these things not stay charged very long? I think I heard somewhere (this thread maybe) that using 3G can drain it.

I've heard of people having issues with holding a charge but no problem with our 3Gs.

Also, I don't know if it was this thread but was talk of how to hook up to car stereo. I don't have an AUX. I went to a car audio place and they wanted $250 to hook me up ($50 of that was labor). I said I just wanted an AUX plug but the guy was convinced I wanted to go his route. Which is to have a plug like your charger installed. So you get all features, plus it charges while you play, and the sweetest part is that you can control the music from your steering wheel controls.

Kind of pricey but I'm glad I went that route.

FYI:Not sure if anyone else had this, but my chrome tip fell off the silent switch.I took it to the apple store, and they gave me a new phone for free. It was considered a "manufacturer defect". Pretty sweet since I was about to just super glue the thing back on (I don't think it would have made a difference).Obviously you don't want anything to go wrong, but I like that they just took care of it, no questions asked.
that just happened to mine the other day, I am taking it back once I get back to Cali. I just wish they would give me a 3gs when I do

It does, so does having the screen brightness turned up, and extended use of certain apps, particularly the GPS/Map.
Having Bluetooth and/or WiFi enabled will also drain it pretty quickly. I just ordered the Tekkeon MP1200 case/external battery so I can keep everything turned up to the max all day. The reviews also claim (but I have not yet verified) that you can sync the iPhone to your iTunes with a plain old mini-USB cable through the Tekkeon case. If it works, that would be pretty sweet -- it's easy to lay your hands on a mini-USB cable in an emergency. One of the proprietary iPod cables, not so much.

Also, I realized this today. Since picking up the 3Gs a few weeks ago, I haven't yet had to restart the phone due to an application issue. Not sure if this is because of the 3Gs hardware or the 3.0 firmware, but it seems very stable compared to the 3G with 2.x firmware.

it is awesome but just hope they don't switch charging options on future iPhones. I had what you bought for my old iPod. Loved it. Old iPod broke and I bought one of the new ones. Music plays but it won't charge because it is FireWire and the iPods are now USB. It never worked on my iPhone, charge or play so it sounds like you have an upgraded unit. Mine just sits in my glove compartment now since I don't carry my iPod on me at all times anymore.

Anyone having a problem with voicemails dropping in. I have people calling me and leaving a message but I don't get the message for hours, sometimes a full day.

How do these external batteries work?

all the time.but I don't really get cel coverage at my house or in the inner sections of the building I work in.But, I'll be out an about for hours in an area with great coverage and then it will finally buzz tolet me know there's a voicemail from a day ago. Really annoying.ps. I have a 1st Gen phone if that matters.
