The Apple iPhone Thread (2 Viewers)

Any idea how ATTs new pricing plan is going to work with data? If it's no longer unlimited I can see some outrageous bills with the 4G. This is the only thing holding me back from ordering now.
$10 for each additional 1 GB
Are these video calls counting against data? seems like that 1GB will go fairly quickly
Not currently capable of video over 3G... just Wifi. Though they are working on arrangements with carriers, so yes... it will be something to consider in the future. IMHO Bandwidth will scale much like HD storage has. a 2GB $25 plan will become a 4GB $25 plan will become a 10GB $30 plan as time goes on and wireless bandwidth is fully commoditized. Once video calls become somewhat commonplace the system will scale to accommodate and the pricing will follow suit.
:o appreciate the info

weight of EVO: 6.0 ozweight of Iphone 4g: 4.4 oz
That's a significant difference. Nearly 50% heavier!
iPhone 4 = 4.8ozEVO 4G = 6ozThere are several reasons why the EVO is slightly thicker/heavier including a larger, higher capacity 1500mAh battery and a microSD slot. I can't find the specs on the iPhone 4 battery but based on the 3Gs and dimensions, it's almost certainly 1200mAh or less. So you get a thinner, lighter device but also a smaller battery and no memory expansion. The Verizon HTC Incredible has the same tradeoff compared to the EVO 4G, although both support micro-SD. Some users will prefer the smaller form factor of the iPhone 4G, Incredible, etc while others will want the larger screen and battery capacity of a device like the EVO 4G. Either way, the smartphone market is rocking right now and users are reaping the benefits due to great competition.

Intriguing. iPhone looks superior in all aspects except 4G (which isn't available here so IMO it's a wash). Factor in a far superior integrated media store (iTunes for books/movies/music) and a good bit smaller form factor (while maintaining much better pixel density) and it's pretty clear which is best for me, personally. Nice to see some quality contenders on both sides tho :o
Really? You prefer wi-fi only, iPhone to iPhone only video chat to Android's 3G, 4G, and wi-fi video chat?

You prefer a 3.5 inch screen to a 4.3 inch screen?

You prefer a 5 mega-pixel camera to an 8 mega pixel camera?

You can prefer the iPhone to EVO, but I don't see how you can look at that comparison chart and come away with "iPhone is superior in all aspects except 4G".
Screen:Yes... I'd rather have 20% more pixels on a slightly smaller screen. I like small phones.. i like viivid displays. 3.5 is plenty big for a phone display. In this case I'll take quality over quantity.

IMO. I'lll have to see a review on the quality of the images before I comment on the cameras. I have a 8MP DSLR that takes 10x better photos than my 12MP point and shoot. Again... if Apple lives up to their promises of significantly higher image quality then I'll again prefer quality over quantity.

I won't be using video chat very often.... but when I do, 9 times out of 10 it will be within wifi range. That said... this is not a phone limitation, but a network one. You can count on an app being out soon that will allow 3G video conferencing. NOnissue IMO.

Have you seen the video showing the build quality of the ipHone? I have yet to handle either but I suspect the fit/finish of the iPhone will be significantly superior (having wned many HTC products before)

Battery life is comparable with iPhone having a slight edge... so the "Bigger because of a bigger battery"_ argument is null. EVO only comes with 8GB SD Card...and has to max out it's "expanded" memory to reach the factory capacity of the 32GB iphone.Also.. keep in mind that the EVO might have a larger screen in physical size but has 50% less pixel density, so it's no way near as crisp... in fact the iPHone ahs 20% more pixels in that smaller screen size.

Battery is not a null argument due to different network technologies and features supported. EV-DO/WiMax vs. GSM/EDGE/HSDPA/HSUPA.If there was a WiMax 4G iPhone, it would not achieve the same level of battery life due to the power hungry chipset. It would need a bigger battery. Hence the 1500 mAh battery in the EVO 4G. That said it appears the iPhone 4 battery is reportedly about 16% larger than previous generation. So that puts it around 1300mAh. As for expandable memory, I'm not arguing that it's better or worse. It's just another choice that users get to make based on their form factor and usage preferences.

My point was that you implied that you give up some size for longer battery life and expandable memory. I was merely commenting that you're not giving up ANYTHING in battery life with the iPhone's smaller size.. in fact you get more life in a smaller package..win win. Regarding the memory... SD card would be nice but given the choice of a 30% smaller phone with 32GB on board... or a bigger phone where I have to buy a sd chip (and is capped at the 32GB), i'll take the former :lmao: As you said, that can be a user preference, however.

Yes you are correct that users aren't giving up anything in battery life with iPhone 4 if Apple's usage estimates are accurate. But they also don't get a 4G phone, mobile hotspot, etc. I was merely implying that in order to support these enhanced features, the EVO required a larger capacity battery. This adds slightly to the weight and overall dimensions. I imagine a 4G iphone will have the same challenges, although I believe LTE may be a slightly more friendly power consumption 4G network compared to WiMax.

we'll i was on the fence between the EVO and iphone and am going with the iphone.

I went to check out the EVO in person and i couldn't imagine holding it up and using it as a phone, just way too big, would be a bit embarrassing using it in public. Also all the reviews about the battery running out after a few hours spooked me.

I'll stick with the tried and trusted Apple as i know they put out solid dependable products. would have liked to see a Verizon option but ATT is improving their network.

Sprint isn't close to being legit 4G. No one is. That's 100MBps type speed. These companies using that tag are simply doing it for marketing purposes.

Amen to that, megapixels are far from the by-all for photo taking. At this point the image processor/sensor and lens are much more important than pure megapixels.

Wondering if someone can get me a summary of all the improvements to this phone. The "leak" not withstanding seems like it's a tune up to bring iPhone current and add a cool new screen, camera etc. Is that a fair assessment?

Video call your mum: You make a phone call, push a button that says FaceTime and suddenly it turns into a video call (only with WiFi). So your folks can see your pretty face (not to be used on Saturday night). There’s a better camera: The iPhone 4 has a 5-megapixel camera with a built-in LED flash. Plus, it has a 5x zoom and a ‘tap to focus’ feature, allowing you to pick the portion of the scene you want in focus.A second camera: There’s a second camera on the front of the phone, meaning you can easily snap a self-portrait in front of Big Ben.A better video camera: The iPhone 4 shoots in high definition at 30 frames per second, the same as most camcorders, and at 720p, it should still look good on your wide-screen TV. You can edit your vid on the phone with iMovie. It’s tougher: "Chemically strengthened" glass on both sides is said to be more durable and a stainless steel frame should make it less smash-able. We know you love to send your phone skidding across the pub floor.Built-in reader: Download iBooks for free. Unlike previous apps for books, this is supposed to support PDFs. No more swapping books with scary stains on them in hostels.Easy e-mail: The iPhone 4 allows you to view a single inbox that combines as many separate accounts as necessary.
Is this a fair summary?

Curious what the monthly charges are for the new iPhone. I pay $60/month for unlimited talk/text/data with my new EVO (no tethering). What does a similar plan cost you per month with the iphone 4?

AT&T updates iPhone upgrade dates for more customers

By Sam Oliver

Published: 08:50 AM EST

Ahead of Apple's anticipated next-generation iPhone announcement, AT&T again began moving some customers' upgrade eligibility dates forward to allow them to buy Apple's latest handset.

A number of users have reported that their eligibility for an iPhone upgrade has been updated, allowing them to buy Apple's next-generation iPhone as soon as it goes on sale, fully subsidized with a 2-year contract agreement. Apple is widely expected to announce its latest handset today, during a keynote from company co-founder Steve Jobs.

Customers can see their upgrade eligibility by logging into their account on the AT&T website and selecting "Check Upgrade Options." Upgrade status can also be checked by dialing *639# from the iPhone.

"As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee," AT&T's message to eligible iPhone owners reads.

Though U.S. iPhone customers must sign a two-year contract with AT&T in order to receive the iPhone at a subsidized price, the wireless carrier frequently offers faster upgrades for its highest paying customers. Those with more services and a higher monthly bill typically are not required to wait the full two years before they become eligible.

AT&T previously revealed that generally speaking, customers who spend more than $99-a-month per line are eligible for an upgrade between 12 and 18 months into their contract.

The latest round of upgrades follow previous updates by AT&T in May, when some users saw their upgrade eligibility date moved up by months, to June 21, 2010.

Moving up customers' upgrade dates is the same approach AT&T has taken in the past. Last year, the wireless carrier offered early iPhone 3G adopters the opportunity to purchase an iPhone 3GS as the same $199 and $299 price points as new customers.

I really enjoy my Droid, but this is the first time I would seriously consider moving over to AT&T for the iPhone4. Not sure if someone can answer this in this thread but if someone on my plan (Verizon) is due for a new phone because they fullfilled their contract obligations, can they assume my spot and I leave the plan? I have over a year left on my phone but if my father can take my phone I would like to leave Verizon.

When my wife and I left Verizon and went to Cingular, we gave our phones to my sisters and my father took over the plan. There was some paper work that needed to be filled out

Two years from when you get your new phone or a two year extension to what you have left on your last two year plan?Guessing it's the second.

Anyone know the answer to this

If you are on wifi, are you using data usage

So if I have the slingbox app but am on wifi, does ATT charge me MBs.

Also, does anyone use the slingbox app and how does it affect your usage.

Well that's halfway home. I wonder if my father can keep his own number?

You can prefer the iPhone to EVO, but I don't see how you can look at that comparison chart and come away with "iPhone is superior in all aspects except 4G".
Screens: the iPhone 4 with the Retina display will blow the EVO out of the water. EVO=220 ppi to iPhone=326ppi. EVO only displays 68k colors. iPhone= highest resolution display ever in a phone. Huge Advantage iPhone 4.WiFi: EVO only supports 802.11b/g while iPhone supports 802.11b/g/n, allowing for much faster WiFi speeds (up to 600Mbps vs. 54Mbps). Huge Advantage iPhone 4.

Camera: EVO has higher mega pixel (8 vs. 5), but lens and sensor are much more important to quality than mega pixel count. Apple claims to have upgraded the sensor. Jury is out on this one.

Video: Both record at 720p, but EVO only records 20fps while iPhone 4 records at 30fps. Advantage iPhone 4.

No. The ATT data usage is only for when on their 3G (or EDGE) network. WiFi does not count against the cap numbers.

That covers your bases not including all the software updates associated with iOS4 (multitasking, etc)You're also not mentioning the Gyroscopic 3D sensor that improves greatly upon the traditional accelerometer (that Evo doesn't have). Also there's the dual noise-canceling microphones on the base of the phone (which I don't believe the evo has), and the greatly improved construction materials (hardened durable glass front and back and reduced size) that the EVO doesn't have.

I've been looking for the specs on this "multitasking" feature. What's been done? Also, any huge steps on the OS side or just small mods? The inner workings are more interesting to me than the other stuff.

I have yet to handle either but I suspect the fit/finish of the iPhone will be significantly superior (having wned many HTC products before)
Have you played with an EVO?
Nope but I will likely do so tomorrow at lunch. There's a sprint store near my house. That said I have no intentions of moving back to sprints network. It's absolutely horrible out here :own3d:Why do you ask this? Do you think my assessment above is incorrect? Which part?

Wondering if someone can get me a summary of all the improvements to this phone. The "leak" not withstanding seems like it's a tune up to bring iPhone current and add a cool new screen, camera etc. Is that a fair assessment?
Apple.com
Surprisingly, doesn't tell me any more than what I've read here. Thought there might be an in depth analysis somewhere...guess it's not enough changes to warrant something like that?

WiFi: EVO only supports 802.11b/g while iPhone supports 802.11b/g/n, allowing for much faster WiFi speeds (up to 600Mbps vs. 54Mbps). Huge Advantage iPhone 4.
Can you expound on this a bit? It would be a 15 minute mod in code to get "n" added to the android platform if the need was there. What you are saying above would be similar to a hater pointing out that EVO is equipped to run on "4G" out of the box but iPhone isn't. It would be a slight mod in both cases to gain that capability. Throw in the prevalence of "n" networks, and I don't see how you are getting here. What am I missing?

You would barely notice the difference unless you were transferring huge files on your home network or streaming to your phone. For web surfing, there would be minimum to no difference at all.

You'd notice a big difference for stuff like uploading videos to YouTube. The addition of n speed wireless is not software based. The Evo simply doesn't have it.

:lmao: Commish, you can't just add an 'n' to the software and have the wifi run faster. Your constant attempts at making Apple products seem merely mortal is never shocking yet funny every time.

Huh? Much faster processor, 4x screen resolution, another camera (on the front), better camera on the back, LED flash, HD video recording, 25% thinner, more battery life, noise cancellation, outer casing integrated with antenna (likely better reception) and of course there's iOS 4. That's not enough changes? Google around a bit, you'll find plenty of in depth analysis.

Assumed the radios were equipped like HTC said they were  Is that not the case?

FYI- ATT is offering earlier upgrades for iPhone owners to move to new iPhone. Just dial *639# from your iPhone and you'll get a text with you upgrade status. Good way to renew contracts in advance of rumors of the iPhone moving to different carriers... just saying...

Awesome thanks man -- I guess she was able to check on the AT&T site this morning, and as a "valued customer" she's got the discounted upgrade. It's on.Sort of regretting my iPad in view of the iphone4, but the truth is that for my purposes, ipad is much better -- I don't use it as a phone, and the bigger screen and passable keyboard are absolutely key.

There are little things that make the iphone very 'polished' also. On the 3gs, the oiled screen is incredibly easy to wipe face grease off of - it's a nice touch. My finger easily glides on the screen. Other phones feel tacky.

Also, the sheer number of accessories for the iphone have to be considered. High end speaker docks from Bose, Klipsch, that Zeppelin thing. I have a handle bar mount for my bicycle, which is great for the GPS (b.icycle app). Just so many little extras. Walk into Target, Best Buy, WalMart and you just see a ton of accessories. No other phone has this.

I love the iphone, but I would switch to a 'better' phone in a second. And by better phone, I mean the whole user experience has to be better. Not just have superior specs.

Edit to add: I do LOVE the kickstand feature on the EVO. Very nice.

Again....going by what HTC said regarding their radios....are they lying?

Sorry...significant changes. I can understand why these would be life changing for you though. This functionality has brought the iPhone to 2010 from 2007, which is a good thing.

Apologies icon...it was the incredible that has the n and it was disabled by the carriers:http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/04/13/...credible-specs/

I got the two confused.

Last I recall the N was not yet a set standard.
I know that my Apple Airport Extreme router has had 802.11n since 2007. From Wiki:

802.11n is a recent amendment which improves upon the previous 802.11 standards by adding multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and many other newer features. The IEEE has approved the amendment and it was published in October 2009.[9][10] Prior to the final ratification, enterprises were already migrating to 802.11n networks based on the Wi-Fi Alliance's certification of products conforming to a 2007 draft of the 802.11n proposal.

No apologies needed. Honest mistake. Hell, you had me wondering if I was wrong :lmao:
