See....this is EXACTLY what I was talking about earlier.....they "sold out" of their pre-orders, but HTC sales died off because of poor ordering estimations. The end result for both was that they had no more phones available....Apple is freakin' fantastic at this stuff!!! Screw technology....they should just go in to the advertising business...they'd make a lot more money that way.AT&T sold out of iPhone 4 pre-orders for launch day.
"Because of the incredible interest in iPhone 4, today was the busiest online sales day in AT&T history. As of Tuesday afternoon, customers who preorder iPhone 4 moving forward will receive their device on June 25 or later, depending on when the order is placed. We'll email customers with confirmation once their order is placed, and again when it ships. In addition, we will have devices available on a first-come, first-serve basis in our stores beginning on June 24."
How did you do it? I've been trying online since 5am this morning :-(16gb iPhone4 reserved for pickup June 24th.![]()

Apple.comcurrent Verizon customer switching over to the iphone. Definitely not happy so far. Tried all day to get a phone only to finally get through and AT&T tell me they sold out of the pre-orders and I don't even have an option to pre-order one now.is this what I can expect from them going forward?

You should get a confirmation email stating your order. You can also login to Apple and your pre-order will be on your account, if in fact it went through. But that sounds wierd. I didn't have to enter any CC info to reserve the in store pickup, it was only needed for home delivery.I have no idea if I pre-ordered today. bagI went on apple.com , put in my order, and it hung forever. I never got to enter my card, login to the apple store, etc. only got to enter phone number, zip code and last 4 SSN to check availability. But it told me I had completed my order and to bring my identification to the Apple store on the 24th.It sure seems like some steps were missing, or I didn't actually order.unsure
You hit the wrong button, I'm guessing, and reserved one instead of preordering one.I have no idea if I pre-ordered today. bagI went on apple.com , put in my order, and it hung forever. I know you were trying to help - couldn't resist the softball ;-)glad I was able to pre-order now the guessing game will begin of when it will actually be shipped. Here is the e-mail I received from AT&Tthanks didn't realize Apple had a website.Apple.comcurrent Verizon customer switching over to the iphone. Definitely not happy so far. Seriously though since you are a verizon customer was just making sure you knew you could sign up at apple and didn't have to keep trying the AT&T website. AT&T said they were out at 4:30 and I preordered mine at apple around 9:00, just makig sure you knew you could still preorder.
Thank you for placing your order with AT&T.Pre-orders for iPhone® 4 and iPhone 3GS 8 GB will be processed to arrive between June 25, 2010 and July 5, 2010, if submitted by 2 p.m. ET, June 22, 2010.The actual shipment date and receipt of your order is not guaranteed and may be subject to delays for reasons that include, but are not limited to, product availability, inventory, credit issues, number porting or carrier delays, and completion of other required AT&T business processes.Additional items added to the cart at the time of your pre-order may ship separately depending on availability. All pre-orders taken online are being handled on a first-come, first-served basis. We appreciate your business and take pride in providing you with the fastest 3G network in America and the best coverage worldwide
You could only reserve one if picking up at apple store. You were pre-ordering if choosing delivery. The email you should have gotten when reserving tells you to bring ID and CC when you pick it up from store :You hit the wrong button, I'm guessing, and reserved one instead of preordering one.I have no idea if I pre-ordered today. bagI went on apple.com , put in my order, and it hung forever. Apple, AT&T hit with glitches on new iPhone orders
Apple, AT&T hit with glitches on new iPhone orders, including apparent AT&T security breach
Jordan Robertson and Peter Svensson, AP Technology Writers, On Wednesday June 16, 2010, 7:32 am
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Apple and AT&T are facing two major problems taking orders for the newest iPhone model just a week before it hits stores: Buyers reported problems registering their orders and an apparent glitch in AT&T's website was steering some customers into strangers' accounts.
Troubles in meeting demand for the iPhone aren't new.
But the latest apparent breach and other recent security foul-ups by AT&T could lead to identity theft -- and have consequences for both companies. Critics and customers have called for Apple to allow other carriers to serve the iPhone in the U.S., and the latest problems offer another argument.
The computer systems at Apple Inc., maker of the iPhone, or AT&T Inc., its exclusive U.S. carrier, have had various problems every year since the first iPhone launched in 2007.
Some customers who tried to buy an iPhone 4 on Tuesday said they were met with error messages on the company websites, and lines formed in stores as clerks tried to get orders into their systems.
Japanese phone company Softbank started taking orders earlier in the day, and was also flooded with requests. Softbank spokesman Furuya Katsuhide said that the better-than-expected demand had stressed the company's systems, which slowed both its website and the reservation process at stores.
On Gizmodo.com, a technology website, several readers posted stories of trying to log into their AT&T accounts to upgrade to the newest iPhone and being sent instead into strangers' accounts. That could set the stage for identity theft scams such as ordering other products under that person's name.
AT&T said it received reports of customers seeing the wrong account information but wasn't able to replicate the problem and was investigating. But the company said the personal information users were seeing in one another's accounts didn't include Social Security numbers, credit card information and detailed call logs.
Just last week, AT&T plugged an embarrassing security hole on its website that exposed the e-mail addresses of people who had bought another new Apple product, the iPad 3G.
And in January, AT&T acknowledged to The Associated Press that a problem in its network was causing some wireless customers to land in strangers' Facebook accounts when they tried to check their own accounts using their smart phones. AT&T said it was fixing that glitch.
It doesn't happen often, but the Internet can forget who is who when multiple people log onto a site at the same time.
AT&T blamed a "misdirected cookie" for at least one of the problems in January. A cookie is a file websites place on users' computers to identify them. If the Internet provider fumbles a cookie and sends it to the wrong computer, the person using that computer will see a Web page he or she wasn't expecting.
Apple representatives didn't immediately respond to requests for comment late Tuesday.
The iPhone 4 goes on sale June 24 starting at $199. It will feature a higher-resolution screen, longer battery life and thinner design than last year's model.
Associated Press Writers Tomoko A. Hosaka contributed from Tokyo. Svensson reported from New York.
So even though I "reserved" an iPhone, it's not guaranteed? Shouldn't they know how many iPhones were ordered at a particular store and then ship something close to that amount? I'll be pissed if I get there and they are all out.Pre-authorization does not guarantee iPhone availability at an Apple Retail Store. iPhone is sold on a first-come, first-served basis.Your reservation is valid for pickup only at the Apple Retail Store that you selected.
I noticed at the bottom of the confirmation e-mail, it says the following:

I thought the same thing when I got my 8gb. I think the bigger the better. You also have apps on thereIf I upgrade, I will probably get the 32I ordered the 16GB version b/c I don't anticipate storing a lot of songs or video on this thing. What are people's thoughts on how valuable the extra space will be on the 32gb version?
I kept reading for the $50 trade back for OG iphones but no suck luckRadioShack to offer iPhone trade-in for iPhone4.

How about for the original iphone? Any demand for thatYou can get more on eBay, especially if you jailbreak or unlock it.RadioShack to offer iPhone trade-in for iPhone4.

To use myself as an example, I currently have a 16gb, 3gs with 2700 songs, 7 pages of apps, maybe 50 pics and no video and I'm maxed out, sitting at 15.4gb. So if you're not planning on using it as an iPod, the 16gb should be plenty for ya. (but I also said I wouldn't use the iPod either, how wrong I was, it's pretty damn convenientI ordered the 16GB version b/c I don't anticipate storing a lot of songs or video on this thing. What's confusing? I think it's well documented that HTC/Sprint ran out of EVO phones during their initial rollout, yes? It was a monumental mistake by both parties IMO to be out of phones for something that anticipated by the droid groupies. As such, their projections took a nosedive also and that's what we hear about. The fact that they sold out is completely missed.I made comment in this thread (maybe one of the others) that this "spin" would have never hit the presses if it were Apple. Flash forward to this announcement. This is exactly what I was talking about. Now I will say, whoever made the projections they did clearly didn't take into consideration the actual number of physical devices. Clearly you can't sell 2 billion if you only make 1 billion etc. I was simply pointing out this kind of disorganization wouldn't come from Apple. They put a story together better than anyone...it's a compliment. I get that these are "pre orders" (and honestly, I don't know how you sell out of pre orders), but it's great hype and fantastic marketing spin.huh?See....this is EXACTLY what I was talking about earlier.....they "sold out" of their pre-orders, but HTC sales died off because of poor ordering estimations. "Pre-orders for iPhone temporarily suspended." Glad I got in yesterday morning.

So AT&T's network will be even more bogged down in a couple of weeks. I think I might just stick with Verizon and get an Incredible or one of the new Android phones coming out soon."Pre-orders for iPhone temporarily suspended." Glad I got in yesterday morning.
Everyone please get off wifi so I can get my order in. TIA.
Even if you didn't want the new iphone it would make no sense not to at least upgrade. You could ebay or craigslist and get a nice penny.Disagree. A sale is a sale, they all count the same. Every "upgrade" is a consumer that is re-committed to the platform for another two years instead of jumping over to the competition. Retention is equally as important as conquest, especially in light of the recent verbal sparring between Apple & Google, Adobe et. al.A few things that SHOULD happen:
A large % of existing Iphone with ATT users upgrade. If this % isn't at least 75% that's not a good sign but I would be shocked if this isn't the case
The % of new phones sold that are to new customers.
I wouldn't equate a "upgrade" with a "sale" since it makes no sense for existing iphone/att users to not upgrade.
The proof will be how many new customers are making the switch.
You know in less than a week Jobs will say "we sold X amount of Iphones!" but in reality how many are existing and new customers is the key.
OK, but it's still a sale. For every person that "doesn't want one but upgrades anyway", there are how many like myself that want one but can't upgrade yet. This is like saying the only Android sales that count are those that switched over from the iPhone. I'm definitely curious to see new customers for when the 3G and 3GS came out vs. 4Also curious to see the % of current Iphone / ATT customers who upgrade to the 4OK, but it's still a sale. iPhone 4 Launch Generating Ten Times the Interest of iPhone 3GS Launch
Just one day after beginning to accept pre-orders, the iPhone 4 seems to be a huge success. While Apple and AT&T server problems and a quick sellout of the iPhone 4 have suggested a huge response to the new device, we weren't entirely sure if these problems were due to internal glitches and short supply rather than an actual increase of popularity.
But, as noted by Macerkopf.de, Germany's Deutsche Telekom twitter account confirms that there was been a 10-fold increase in traffic on their website for the iPhone 4 launch as compared to last year's iPhone 3GS launch. Also, in contrast, the AT&T's allotment of iPhone 3GS pre-orders sold out in about 5 days compared to less than 1 day this time.
All of the evidence of strong demand is grabbing the attention of Wall Street analysts as well, with Fortune reporting that Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has raised his estimate for iPhone sales for the current quarter from 8.5 million to 9.5 million. Munster's increased estimate comes despite the fact that the iPhone 4 will only actually be available for the final six days of the quarter and with new pre-orders already being pushed into next quarter.
...
Update: As noted by Silicon Alley Insider, AT&T is also claiming a ten-fold increase in pre-orders over the iPhone 3GS.
iPhone 4 pre-order sales yesterday were 10-times higher than the first day of pre-ordering for the iPhone 3G S last year. Consumers are clearly excited about iPhone 4, AT&T's more affordable data plans and our early upgrade pricing. Given this unprecedented demand and our current expectations for our iPhone 4 inventory levels when the device is available June 24, we're suspending pre-ordering today in order to fulfill the orders we've already received. The availability of additional inventory will determine if we can resume taking pre-orders.
Gyroscope. At the risk of starting another pissing match.. what features does the iphone have that evo doesn't?
