The Apple iPhone Thread (5 Viewers)

Mrs. just sold her 3GS 16GB on ebay for 275 buy it now. It went in under an hour. The buyer noted for her NOT to upgrade to the new software, so if you are planning to sell, don't upgrade. Apparently people want the old software.

This pays for the cost of her new iPhone, with tax fees and shipping, and then some. Pretty sweet. Free new phone.

Nice work. When I looked on eBay last week it looked like they weren't going for that much. I already updated my OS.

Old software is easier to jailbreak/unlock.

Not even easier, there just isn't any jailbreak for the new software yet.

She already received payment via pay pal. she cant be scammed here can she? Its just a few months old and she is offering the box and all accessories etc. Not sure why this is so much higher than others. She said she watched a bunch of auctions and set the price around where they seemed to be going.

Wow, for a 16gb? She robbed somebody blind! My Mrs. sold her 32gb 3gs for $320 this past Sunday night. Nice work by your Mrs.!

OK, iPod Touch 2G can be jailbroken using redsn0w 0.9.5b5-2.I now have multitasking and wallpapers!!!Magical.
Do you have instructions on how to do this? How is the performance? Is it slower?
I bounced around to a bunch of sites and eventually figured it out. Find redsn0w 0.9.5b5-2 and download it. Then you have to find the appropriate firmware for your device and put a copy of it on your desktop. For me it was iPod2,1_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw Redsn0w will need to access that file. Then you run redsn0w and just follow the instructions. The only tricky part is a series of buttons you have to press and release for an amount of time that the program will instruct you. I had to go back and repeat that step.As for performance, it appears to be running about the same as before. I haven't noticed it being slower.
Thanks, But I guess I should of checked this thread first. I just upgraded the OS. I assume I have to wait for someone to break jailbreak the new software now. :excited:

If her phone is only a couple of months old, how is she getting the subsidized price on the 4?

Explain this to me like I'm Britney Spears. For the price of a 2 year contract, you can get a 32GB brand new shiny new state of the art iPhone for $299. Right?

Why are people paying more than that for the same size older version? Does 32GB not go as far as it used to?

They offered it to many people who weren't technically up for the upgrade yet. Someone in here said it was maybe based in usage, how long you've been with ATT, etc. She has had every iteration iPhone. Girl who bought it is an NYU student. They are meeting up tonight so she can drop it off in person. She confirmed that the money is in her pay pal account already.

Im guessing it is for someone who either does not wqnt to use ATT or doesn't want to be locked into a contract.

Big sale in the App Store today -- most EA games are 99 cents for today and part of tomorrow only. Titles include Madden 10, FIFA 10, NBA Live, a couple of Need For Speed versions, Command and Conquer Red Alert, SimCity, and Tiger Woods.

A few classic board games are also included: Battleship, Yahtzee, Life, Clue, and Trivial Pursuit.

At that price, 20 bucks will kill a lot of future boredom.

ETA; Quick link to all EA titles for the iPhone.

Most games use a combination of touch-screen controls (like a mini-control pad and buttons for Madden) at a few spots on-screen. Others also use the accelerometer/tilt angle detection -- the racing games use this for steering.

How well do they translate to the iPhone? The sports games seems like they wouldnt. SimCity and the board games seem like they would.

Do you guys have any of these? I've never paid for an app, but I could use some SimCity.

I haven't had a chance to crank most of them up yet since I'm at work. But the two Need For Speed games are pretty sweet.

Engadget just posted their in-depth iPhone 4 review. It's long, so I won't post the whole article, but here's a few key points:

HARDWARE:

We can't overstate how high-end the design of the iPhone 4 is. The 3GS now feels cheap and chubby by comparison, and even a phone like the HTC Droid Incredible -- which just came out -- seems last-generation.

Overall, the iPhone 4 outclasses pretty much every smartphone on the market in terms of industrial design. It just comes off like a far more expensive device, like a Mobiado or Vertu -- but better designed. And it's not just the way the phone looks; the materials feel good -- premium -- in your hands.

Apple has made the stainless band around the phone essentially a couple of big antennae, and they seem to be doing a pretty good job at hanging onto radio signals. The big question is obviously whether or not this fixes or helps with the constant dropped calls iPhone users on AT&T's network have gotten used to. Well in our testing, we had far, far fewer dropped calls than we experienced on our 3GS. Let's just say that again: yes, the iPhone 4 does seem to alleviate the dropped call issue.

DISPLAY:

Steve made a huge point about the science behind this technology during his keynote, claiming that the resolution of the screen essentially tops what is perceivable by the human eye. There have been some debates as to whether or not this argument holds water, but we can tell you this: to our eyes, there has never been a more detailed, clear, or viewable screen on any mobile device.

Not only are the colors and blacks deep and rich, but you simply cannot see pixels on the screen. Okay, if you take some macro camera shots or get right up in there you can make them out, but in general use, the screen is free of jaggies of any type, unless you're looking at a last-gen app that hasn't had its artwork updated. Text rendering is incredibly clear and clean -- webpages that would be line after line of pixelated content when zoomed out on a 3GS (say, Engadget or the New York Times) are completely readable on the iPhone 4, though the text is beyond microscopic.

Because Apple is using IPS and LED technology for its screen, the iPhone 4 is mercifully visible in full sunlight, and performance in low light and at extreme viewing angles are favorable. Overall, you simply won't find a better display on a phone, and that's not just lip service.

CAMERAS:

At his WWDC keynote, Jobs said that getting great looking images wasn't just about upping the camera's megapixels, but had more to do with grabbing more photons. Increase the photon count, let more light in, and your images will look better, the thought goes. So Apple's using a newer backside-illuminated sensor that's more sensitive to light in addition to upping those megapixels -- and we must say, pictures on the iPhone 4 look stunning.

In general, we'd have no trouble using the iPhone 4's camera as a stand-in for a dedicated camera. Not only did it take beautiful shots, but the A4 and iOS 4 combo have considerably sped up the time it takes to snap pictures -- it's now almost instantaneous.

SPEAKER:

We've never had a particular problem with the speaker or earpiece on previous iPhones (well, the speakerphone has never been loud enough for our taste), but it's obvious that Apple has done some work on getting both call quality and speakerphone quality up. Beyond making the phone considerably and consistently louder in both places, the clarity of the iPhone 4 is noticeably improved from the previous generation. If you read our review, then you know that we thought Motorola's original Droid had some of the best sounding components we've heard on a phone, and the new iPhone definitely gives them a run for the money.

There's clearly a difference between the sound in the earpiece on the new phone versus the 3GS, and it ranks highly against newer competition like the EVO.

BATTERY LIFE:

This is a big one for many people, and we have some fairly surprising news to report. The battery life on the iPhone 4 has been outstanding thus far, exceeding our expectations for longevity during testing. We've only had a short time to use the phone, but in the week or so we've been carrying the device as our main phone, we've had pretty amazing results under normal to heavy use. In fact, we managed to squeeze more than 38 hours -- yes, 38 hours -- of life out of a single charge using the phone as we normally would. We're talking calls, some gaming, lots of push email and calendar invites, playing music over Bluetooth in the car, and just general testing (like downloading new apps, rearranging icons, tweaking settings). We went from 10:30AM on a Saturday morning till 1:00AM on Monday without needing to charge the phone.

WRAP UP:

We're not going to beat around the bush -- in our approximation, the iPhone 4 is the best smartphone on the market right now. The combination of gorgeous new hardware, that amazing display, upgraded cameras, and major improvements to the operating system make this an extremely formidable package.

Sorry if I missed it in the last 80+ pages but what are you guys getting for cases / covers for the 4?
I'm not a big proponent of cases. I like my phones slim and nekkid. The iphone 4 is going to glass on both sides now tho, front and back. I think the bumper is a good idea and won't make it too bulky. It should deter some out of pocket scratches and help prevent damage with drops.$30 for the Apple bumper seems like a rip tho. I'd wait for some knockoffs on ebay.
I can't stand cases. The iPhone 4 front is gorilla glass and from my experience is pretty much impossible to scratch. The back however can be scratched

I like the 3Gs much better without the case. I do not typically drop my phones though. What the hell did this guy do to it in 5 days???

They just told me at Radio Shack that they are expecting "slim pickings" for the phones. They do not know how many they are getting tomorrow or when they'll get another shipment. That this is how Apple is doing the release.

They did, however, tell me that the 16gb 3Gs will get me $200.

He also said something that if you buy more accessories so that Radio Shack could make money that you are more likely to get the phone. I asked him how do you determine who is going to buy accessories prior to a phone purchase and he said "I don't know. I've never seen anything like this. A bidding war of sorts I guess."

He told me to call back at 10am tomorrow and see what they have.

WTF

My guess is he carried it in his pocket with car keys. Outside of that even normal glass screens are pretty tough to scratch.

Reviews of this thing look awesome. The fiancee's is delivered and waiting with our doorman. Really curious to get home tonight and see it in person.

My local Radio Shack put me on a list yesterday. She said there's only 4 people on it. :goodposting: Then she told me the Radio Shack's ENTIRE Sacramento district is getting only 10. :yucky:FML :bag:

Right.I just called another local Radio Shack. They told me that for the entire district Apple has decided to deliver 18 total phones. His store is getting exactly 0. Only the mall stores are getting phones and the store where I have reserved my phone is getting 4.The Best Buy at the same mall is getting 5.He said that the ATT stores are getting 0 this week. There was some kind of meeting or conference call yesterday apparently.I'm not sure what the next or right move is from here.

Yes -- AT&T announced yesterday that they would not have any phones available tomorrow without a preorder. Their first shipment for enterprise customers and AT&T store walk-up business is supposed to be next Tuesday, 6/29. Probably the only non-preorder folks who will get an iPhone tomorrow at AT&T stores will be people who show up late afternoon/early evening when the phones for preorder no-shows get released to the public. If you have an Apple store nearby, that's the Shark Move for sure. Looks like they will be the only store that *may* possibly have a decent first-day stock of iPhones. They're supposed to open tomorrow at 7 AM. I'm giving that some thought.

and then selling on eBay hoping that the price doesn't plummet after tomorrow. I was leaning towards Radio Shack because of the locked in price for my 3Gs. But I dont really feel like waiting a month for the new phone and that's what it seems like almost.I doubt I'd get to the Apple store that early and I assume going any later will be fruitless.

Ummmmm, I dont know what just happened.

I downloaded some apps. Put some folders together and synced everything.

I just unplugged my phone from my computer and all my apps are now out of their folders and there is only one folder . . . Utilities . . . which has stuff in it that I didnt put in my utilities folder previously . . ..
