I just learned this recently but was hoping for a way to scroll to the bottom as well. Tried the same thing at the bottom of the screen but no dice. :kicksrock:

Watch live TV on your iPhone

Not an iOS 4 tip per se, but you can turn your iPhone into TV thanks to the mobile version of the great TVCatchup website. You need to register, but the service is completely free, and even works over 3G as well as Wi-Fi.

not in the USA

PS. My ivyskin magically appeared today.

So I'm showing my wife the new phone and pointing out the new features compared to the 3GS (2 cameras, flash/light, higher MP camera, HD video, thinner, etc.) and she's barely interested until she notices the back:

Her: "Ooooo! Check that out! It has a mirror on the back!"

Me: "Well, it's not really a mirror, they just made the back in this scratch resistance metal instead of the plastic."

Her: "But I would totally use that all the time as a mirror, that's a nice size. This phone is awesome!"

:kicksrock:
It's glass and just withstood a week at the beach without a scratch (have the bumper only).

I noticed that mine was delivered today as well. Wonder what the hold up was?

My guess is they got slammed with way more orders than they had when the drop call thing popped up. Then, when apple offered free cases they had to really throw on the brakes. Their supplier told them to piss up a rope and held them hostage.

this is all very puzzling.First, when I call their customer support phone # nobody ever picks up. They never replied to my email either.

Second, the tracking information on the shipment says this:

Bullet Processed through Sort Facility, August 03, 2010, 9:19 pm, KEARNY, NJ 07099

Bullet Electronic Shipping Info Received, July 19, 2010

and the label on the package says that the postage was paid for on July 20th.

Seems like they sat somewhere for 2 weeks before they actually got shipped.

Got my iPhone 4 finally!! Does anyone know how to add apps to the multitasking bar? Removing them is pretty straightforward.

I am pretty sure when you open the app, it is then added to the multitask bar (apps on left are most recently used). Or are you asking something different? I am a 3GS with iOS4 user, no iP4 yet. Is this specific to iP4?

I think you're right. Is there any point to removing an app from the bar?

The ZAGG invisibleSHIELD is really annoying. It sticks like glue to glass and plastic surfaces/objects. I have had two replaced thus far and the third one started to peel near the camera last night.
I have the same shield and have not had any issues :knockonwood:

Ok thanks. And yeah, I see no point in removing any apps from the bar. I was just playin around with it....

Multitasking lets apps continue certain functions in the background. Over extended periods, apps in the background can drain your battery quicker than normal. For instance, I left Pandora playing in the background overnight and my battery dropped from 80% to 60% by the morning. Not earth-shattering, but something to keep in mind.

iOS 4.1 beta supports for mobile-free FaceTime via email

By Daniel Eran Dilger

Published: 04:00 PM EST

New support in the developer beta 3 release of iOS 4.1 allows users to make FaceTime video calls without needing a phone number or mobile service, strengthening the case for FaceTime support on iPod touch, iPad and Macs.

When Apple announced FaceTime as a feature on iPhone 4, chief executive Steve Jobs indicated that it would soon be available on tens of millions of devices and that the standard would be opened up for third parties to implement.

The current FaceTime system on iPhone 4 is tied to the user's phone number, making it easy to initiate video calls without setting up an account. In order to bring the feature to other devices, including the iPod touch, iPad, and Macs, FaceTime needs an alternative way to discover and connect with users.

AppleInsider indicated this would likely happen in conjunction with a MobileMe account, which Apple already uses to enable Mac users to remotely find and connect to shared files and other services on their home systems via the "Back to My Mac" feature.

FaceTime with mobile service

Previous articles noted that FaceTime on iPhone 4 only used the mobile network to discover the remote user, meaning that FaceTime sessions did not use cell minutes.

Additionally, it was later discovered that FaceTime only needs a mobile connection to initially register the user, meaning that subsequent calls to a user could take place even when there was no mobile service available.

Last month, company executives dodged a question about when FaceTime would expand beyond iPhone 4 to reach other mobile devices and or Windows and Mac desktop systems. However, a report by BGR noted that the initial 4.1 beta contained support for associating FaceTime calls with an email address.

According to a new report by Eric Slivka of Mac Rumors, the latest iOS 4.1 beta 3 includes a streamlined interface for initiating FaceTime calls, prompting the user to connect via a phone number or email address (below).

Set to be an open standard

Connecting via email would enable FaceTime on forthcoming new models of iPod touch, which are already rumored to include a front facing camera that would be primarily suited for video calls. The beta graphics also indicate the forthcoming iPod touch 4 is likely to include the same Retina Display as iPhone 4.

Adding support for FaceTime via an email account would also enable Apple to bring FaceTime support to iChat AV on the Mac, which already shares nearly identical video chat technology. This would give Apple a leg up on competing, proprietary video chat networks such as Skype, which currently does not support video chat from mobile devices, or Fring, which was banned by Skype from making mobile to desktop calls via its VoIP network.

Adding iChat AV support would immediately open FaceTime to around 30 million Mac users. It could potentially increase interest among iPhone 4 and new iPod touch 4 users in buying Macs as well. Apple has also announced official intent to open the FaceTime technical specifications to other vendors to allow compatible video calls between any mobile devices.

However, despite the existence of open standards in other areas, including Jabber text instant messaging, there has not been a widespread adoption of open IM across vendors. Yahoo, Microsoft, and AOL IM all continue to maintain their own closed, proprietary IM chat networks while mobile phone operators similarly cling to paid SMS. Only Apple and Google have embraced open Jabber IM.

However, with Skype being the primary video chat network available, and because it does not currently officially support video chat between mobile devices, Apple's FaceTime standard has a much greater opportunity to quickly become the de facto standard for video conferencing. Apple's FaceTime is almost entirely based on IETF standards already, making it very easy for existing video conferencing vendors to support the specification.

When I was syncing my 3GS to iTunes last night, a dialog box came up saying that iOS 4.0.2 was available for update. I didn't update because I wanted to see if there were issues first with other "guinea pigs." Later, when I looked at Apple's website, it only mentions 4.0.1. Anyone else notice this?

I synched my 4 last night around 10PM EST and did not receive any update messages.

I took the update around lunch time today. No issues.

Multitasking question...

So when you're done using an app, you click the home button. But it doesn't really 'kill' the app. I've noticed my battery life had been getting worse, and realized that I had a ton of apps still running in the background. Many were 'location services' type apps that were the culprit. Is the only way to really shut the app down is to double click home and then hold and press the "-" to kill the app(s) you want killed or is there an easier way when exiting the app?

I found the same thing and that's the way I close out of things now.

Just had WTF moment: I try to tag a song using shazam and a msg pops up saying that I only had 5 tags a month. So now you have to pay for unlimited shazam? That's ridiculous and I most definitely won't be buying the full version.

Literally all it does is fix the Jailbreakme.com exploit. Because, you know, it's in Apple's best interest to punish their customers.

Caved and bought the 4. Super fast compared to the 3G thus far in just about every category. Jailbroken already. Looking forward to setting it up. Mrs. Osaurus is getting the 3G and she is pretty happy. Good times.

I was wondering how a jailbroken iPhone 4/iOS compares to an Android phone when rooted? I think this is a more similar comparison for someone like me trying to debate between iPhone 4 and Samsung Captivate.

Still waiting for my case so I'm going without for now.

It is amazing how much the signal craters when you hold it near the bottom. Apple had to know this before they shipped it.

Just got mine - what the hell was I waiting for? Love this phone. Already have tons of apps loaded due to recommendations on this web and the innerwebs - have to say some cool, cool stuff..

Is there where I complain that installing OS 4.0 totally screwed my 3G? It's way slower, stuff crashes, and it didn't improve anything. Thanks for rolling out a software downgrade, Apple.

I'm pretty sure they did this on purpose to get people to buy the new iPhone.

Did this on my 3G and everything went to #### immediately. Apps I tried to open would just end and listening to AOL Radio sounded like a CD skipping. I rolled it back to 3.1.3. You can download the firmware and hold down shift and press the system restore button in iTunes. You may or may not need Recboot to get it finalized. HTH.

For the jailbreak crowd: You can use an app called ztoggle to turn off multitasking. Running it now and works as expected.

The update did the same thing for my wife's 3G. I did a restore and things seem to be ok.

I just recently started having a problem with one of my e-mail accounts and I can't figure out what's happening. Up until late last week, I didn't have a problem receiving my work e-mail through my iPhone4. Last Thursday or Friday throughout the day I was receiving e-mail however when I logged into my work computer later that night, there were 6-8 e-mails in my Outlook inbox that were marked as unread. I looked at my iPhone inbox for that account and didn't see those e-mails at all. I tried to determine if there was some consistency between the e-mails that didn't appear but it seemed random. Different times, some were send directly to me, others were replies or CC or BCC, some had attachments, some didn't. Really weird. It's not happening to any of my other accounts (GMAIL, Hotmail, etc,) so it's specific to only my work account (that runs off an exchange server).

Any ideas why this may be happening?

Doesn't outlook pull the emails off the server? If you left Outlook open, it was probably grabbing the emails before your iphone was.

Might buy one of the iPhone 4's but am looking at the total monthly cost of having one. I cannot find that information anywhere and I would not want to be surprised after the first month. I would use the internet minimally, mainly for texting. I will use my iTouch, for now, to download apps and transfer them to my iPhone 4, if I get one. With the lowest features, what is the monthly cost?

No that wasn't it because Outlook was not open. I had my laptop with me since I was traveling and only turned it on in the evening after getting back to my hotel.I perplexed.

Why was getting multitasking such a big deal? It seems pretty worthless to me.

On the plus side, the speed and battery life of the thing are ridiculously awesome IMO.

It's great in specific cases. Keeping Pandora streaming in the background while you surf, read emails... etc. Allowing your GPS to keep location tracking when a call comes in. Those are much needed multitasking tasks. Otherwise it's more of a battery hog than anything.

I have seen better reception at home with the 4 compared to my old 3G. No complaints really other than some of my old jailbreak apps don't work with iOS4, but others are replacing them.

I found my reception got much better when I downgraded from 4.0.1 back to 3.1.3. Plus, 4.0.1 really bogged down my 3Gs.

True. My 3G choked on 4 and went back to 3.1.3 when I gave it to Mrs. Osaurus.

Just got mine today, dropped 2 calls in a conversation and 1 in another..These were the only two times I talked to anyone on my phone, so thats not good.

The case program is a joke, wont arrive in over a month so I have ordered some cheap one to hold me over.

So if I do not physically close out an app from the taskbar the app is still running in the background and soaking up my battery?

Yes and no. That is how traditional multitasking works. In iOS, there are only specific functions that an app is allowed to continue (each app must be programmed to specifically include these functions), while the rest of the app is in a sleep state. Location tracking, music streaming, message notification are examples of these types of functions. This approach gives significant battery savings over traditional multitasking, but these functions do drain the battery if left in the background unchecked.

Britney Spears was right. The battery life on this thing is incredible. With my old 3G, there was hardly a day that passed where I didn't see the 20% warning, and many times I would have to charge it in the car just to get through the day.

I've only seen it twice since I got 4 a month ago, and both instances were after 3-4 hours of watching videos and playing games (Zenonia 2!!). I can use it all day with the maps application, driving from job to job, making several speakerphone calls, 3g and brightness turned up, and I'll still have like 60-70% battery after everything.

^^ :blackdot: The battery is killer. Huge upgrade, I would routinely see single digits on my %, with the 4 I barely go under 30%, and have actually gone without recharging overnight a few times.
