The Apple iPhone Thread (8 Viewers)

The apple blogosphere seems convinced Ios5 will launch before the hardware this time around.

Without SBSettings type support I have no reason/need to convert until there's an untethered JB.

iPhone 5 : Launching October 4th

Tim Cook to Host iPhone 5 Event On October 4th

Waiting for the iPhone 5? Then you might want to put Tuesday October 4th in your diary. According to All Things D, this is the date Apple has scheduled for the new iPhone’s launch. The event, revealed to All Things D by “sources close to the situation,” will be presided over by Apple’s new CEO Tim Cook.

It makes sense. The rumors have long pegged a late September or early October date for the announcement of the iPhone 4’s successor, and iOS 5 — which will doubtless come pre-installed on the new phone — is due in Fall, which starts right about now.

The news that Tim Cook will be headlining is slightly more surprising. Cook was always more of a behind-the-scenes executive, and some expected that he’d remain so as CEO, letting Steve Jobs’ long-time stage companion Phil Schiller or iOS chief Scott Forstall become the public faces of Apple. If All Things D’s sources are correct, then it looks like Cook is set to fully embrace all of Jobs’ old roles at the company.

Still, we don’t have long to wait to find out. And if all goes well, the real star of the show will be the iPhone 5, whatever new goodies it brings.

For my next phone (end of year, or early Jan) I'm debating between the Droid Bionic and iPhone 5. I'm concerned about going over to the dark side with Apple though.
I'm in the same boat. My contract with Sprint expires in early December and I might just ship to AT&T if I don't like Sprint's plans at that time. It sounds like the iPhone is the better phone and is easier to use, but I'm not a tech geek.

I dont and have never considered myself any type of elitist. However, I will say that I thought it was cool when I had an iphone and others would ask to see it or try it out. Now, it seems like everyone in the world has one. I was at hershey park this past weekend and every third person I saw had one. Unbelievable how much the drop in price and adding it to Verizon has caused this thing to surge.

Just wait till it hits Sprint too. Apple currently has the #1 and #2 selling smartphones in the world (by a pretty good margin). That's pretty sick.

How long is the return policy with Verizon? I got an iPhone 4 in July, and was hopefully wondering if it would be possible to get a 5 when they come out.

Usually 30 days plus a restocking fee. This is why I was telling people not to get the iPhone on Verizon and just to wait on their upgrade.

Be afraid, be very afraid. The funny thing is that many people pointing to the new androids are comparing them to an iPhone 4, which is over a year old.I suggest waiting at least until you see what the iPhone 4S/5G has to offer, and read some reviews before going Droid. They make good phones, but if history is any indication, the next iPhone will be very competitive with the current droids just released, and will likely be more polished.iOS5 should also be very nice, coupled with iTunes match. That's what I'm most looking forward to.
I agree - anyone due for an upgrade should wait until the i5/4S comes out, as well as waiting for Google's new flag ship with Ice Cream Sandwich that is on the way. I'm excited for iOS5 - can't wait to upgrade the OS on the home iPad and see the changes.

Thanks.I had to get a phone in July. I had been waiting, but dropped my old phone in a bucket of water, causing it to die. It was 2+ years old, and on it's last legs. I was also 1000 miles from home, and was able to get Verizon to deliver my iPhone to my in-laws.

Apple’s ‘iPhone 4S’ Will Be Only New Model This Year: Analyst

Despite numerous rumors to the contrary, Apple will only launch one iPhone model this fall and it will be a modest upgrade that closely resembles the current iPhone 4.

In a note to investors on Wednesday, Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair says that Apple will hold a special event between September 28th and October 5th to unveil several new devices. Only one of those devices will be an iPhone, however, and Blair says it will be an incremental update as opposed to the redesigned iPhone 5 that has been rumored on multiple occasions.

"We expect the focus of the new iPhone will be iOS 5, a speedier A5 processor and a higher resolution 8 MP camera with a small possibility of a larger 4 inch screen,” Blair wrote. “We believe the casing will be largely similar to the iPhone with some particular modifications to the antennae [sic]. We don’t expect a second, dramatically different iPhone to accompany this as we don’t think Apple needs to have 3 models in the market to address the high end, mid-tier and low end since the iPhone 4 (with memory lowered to 8 GB) will drop to $99 and effectively attack those markets.”

The analyst believes that in spite of the anticipation generated over the past few months by the possibility of a redesigned iPhone 5, launching two new models wouldn’t make sense for Apple. “Why would Apple bump up only the processor specs of the iPhone 4 in addition to a newly designed iPhone 5 if the goal is to sell it into the pre-paid market at a lower cost?” Blair wondered in his note. “A 4S would simply cost more and a 4S itself wouldn’t create a mid-tier market unless it was priced at $99 and the iPhone 4 went to $49 with the new iPhone at $199. We see this scenario as unlikely.”

But Wedge Partners does expect another device to be unveiled at Apple’s upcoming event: a 3G-enabled iPod touch. Blair says the iPod’s cellular data option will work just like the iPad, allowing users to purchase data plans on a month-to-month basis with no contractual obligations. The notion of a 3G iPod touch aligns with earlier rumors.

Blair’s iPhone estimates remain at 24-25 million units shipped in Apple’s September quarter, and he sees shipments growing to 27 million units in the December quarter. Calendar-year totals will come in at 91 million units according to the analyst’s estimates, which would represent growth of 92% compared to 2010 and will include sales by new carrier partner Sprint, which he expects to sell 4.5 million iPhones over the next year. Blair thinks Apple will begin accepting pre-orders for its next-generation iPhone within days of holding its media event, which will take place on October 4th according to a recent report.

I tried to tell you fools this months ago.

So other than no contract, is there any reason to have a 3G iPod Touch instead of an iPhone? Assuming that you need to have a phone anyway, of course.

I am waiting for the iPhone 4GS/5. I love the 3GS, but my wife hates AT&T's coverage. How's the reception been with the iPhone 4.

iPhone 5 to be "most revolutionary user interface in history"

Possibly including voice activated search and texting, among othe voice features.
This sounds like part of the iOs update, not the phone hardware update. I've always been frustrated how the voice commands have been far below the level of my prior blackberry curve. Hell, even the moto razor had better voice command options.
Hmmm, interesting. Maybe the mic on a tablet is going to be more functional than I was thinking.

The big news is that the Siri voice assistant won't be compatible with the iPhone 3GS or the iPhone 4 because the feature requires the A5, CPU, and additional RAM. This means that the upgrade demand among current current iPhone users will be greater than normal.

lol, wait till it comes out on cydia.

Will this be another feature that Apple rolls out and sells as a "new way" of doing things and changing the way we do things, even though others have been doing it and doing it very very very well for a long time?

 Siri integration is going to be F'ing awesome.

Again, a lot of people seem to think this "battle" is being fought based on hardware specs... it's not. Customer doesn't give two ####s if they've got a 1.4Ghz or 1.0Ghz phone if the latter has a better interface and functionality.

"People have had cars since the model T... I don't see why people think that bugatti Veyron is so special?! "http://siri.com/Link to a comparable product that's 100% integrated into the OS? Sure.. voice command isn't anything new. Taking it to this level (presumably) will be.

So this is now my second car charger to stop working. What's the deal?? Is it DOA or is there a fix? Power light is lit, but refuses to charge. :wall:

Well, that would suck.

I'm eligible to upgrade to the iPhone 4s through our business account. I can never preorder, however, online since it isn't a personal account. Has anyone ever preordered through an AT&T Business account rep? Did you get the phone on the launch date?

Thanks.

My screen just cracked when I dropped it on the floor. There are a ton of sites out there that offer new LCD screens. Has anyone used a certain one in particular. I have a genius bar appointment for tomorrow but Im guessing they say it cant be fixed and try to make me buy a new one. For $100 bucks or so, I can see if I can fix it myself (which I might not be able to do, but beats $600)

If it is a business you run and dont want to pimp it here, Ill take a PM

Hi Acer,Look on Craigslist. There are a lot of people out there who will do it for less than the Apple Store.

Will be updating my 3GS to iOS5 tomorrow before giving it to my wife but just wondering if it might affect performance. I remember after a similar update on the 3G it was almost unusable.

Unfortunately I think this will probably bring a 3GS to a grinding halt.

I've been running the iOS 5 developer beta on a 3GS for several months now. Runs pretty well actually, and I'd expect the final release to be even better.

 Thanks. I was too eager last time and my wife was not best pleased, think I'll hold off for a day or two and read some reviews. Hopefully by then my 4s should be here :excited:

Thanks. There was also a problem with the digitizer on the mother board. Got it taken care of though

Accidentally posted this in the 4S thread but might as well leave it there.

Anyone know of a good app to lock folders? Trying to decide if I'm going to keep any banking apps on the 4S but I hate pass lockIng the whole phone. The ones I see on the app store seem mostly pic oriented and not sure if they'll work on a regular folder with non photo apps in it. Suggestions?

Anyone sell an iPhone through gazelle.com? I have a 3G that I have absolutely no need for at all and am thinking about selling it. Gazelle claims they will give me ~$53 for it. If nobody has done it, I will volunteer to be a test subject. :bye:

You should be able to get more then that on Craigslist.
Meh...not a fan of CL, but I may check comparables.ETA: Saw some for over $100 on CL. I went with $75. Let's see if anyone bites then Gazelle may be option 2.

Amazon was offering more than Gazelle for my Droid X. Might want to check there.

Despite the fact that iPhone 4S was only released last week, sources say Apple is already well along in its plans for the development and release of iPhone 5. Some believe that it was the iPhone 5, not the iPhone 4S, that co-founder and former Apple CEO Steve Jobs worked on prior to his death last week.Rumor has it that Apple’s iPhone 5 will be released in mid-2012. What’s more, it is believed that the iPhone 5 will be equipped with the largest screen in iPhone history as well as a thinner profile. Other sources say it will have LTE (Long Term Evolution), or 4G.An unnamed industry analyst believes the release of the iPhone 5 will outshine the iPhone 4S in terms of pre-orders and launch day sales.“The iPhone 5 is a ‘complete redesign. This is a very large project that Steve dedicated all of his time to. He was not that involved in the 4S because his time was limited’,” says CNET’s Brooke Crothers.

My cellphone will be 6 years old this coming December. I'm considering getting an iPhone, but I have a few questions:

1. If I get an iPhone, will I have to upgrade it twice a year to be happy?

2. Which provider has the best coverage, AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint? I live very near El Paso, Tejas. ¡Órale!

3. Which provider is the most reasonable for a single account, moderate use?

4. I talked to AT&T about a year ago, they offered a 15% discount on my monthly charge because I am a teacher. Is that still in place? Do other carriers offer the same or better discount?

5. How much a month am I looking at? Currently I get 600 minutes/month plus free from 9pm-7pm and free weekends.

6. What does the iPhone offer that an android doesn't?

Muchas gracias for su buena onda y por su gran ayuda.
