The Apple iPhone Thread (6 Viewers)

So I think I want to switch from my EVO to the iphone, but one of the things I do nearly every day on my EVO is download an mp3 of a sports talk show that I like every afternoon to listen to on the way home from work. It's not in itunes...I simply download it off the webpage and listen to it with a media player. Is there an option to do this in iphone? I messed around with my wife's yesterday and couldn't figure it out intuitively.thx
I don't have an iPhone, but when I used to download from radio stations I'd just download and drop into my iTunes playlist on my touch. Couldn't you just do the same thing on your iPhone? Download it to a folder and then import it through iTunes?
I'm not sure....don't have one in front of me right now...but it wasn't clear initially that I could do so on my wife's phone.

It depends on some factors. Post the link and i'll check it out.

Ok I see, well this is one of the reasons to jailbreak. Apple wants you to use itunes for all MP3 sync and download traffic. Doing a straight download here will open you up to the file system which Apple does not want you to see or access.

Obviously, you can just straight stream any mp3 link you find. That's the easy solution.

The second solution would be to jailbreak and run pwnplayer instead of itunes.

The third solution, which incidentally Apple let slide through the cracks until last week was an App called Any Music Downloader. This would do exactly what you want and even would sync it with Itunes later, but Apple saw fit to yank it from the App Store. I'm not sure if it will show up on Cydia now or what. I'll see.

Edit: yes it appears Any Music Downloader is on Cydia for $2.

thx. What's Cydia? Does it require jailbreaking?

Yes, but even on Iphone 4s jailbreaking is easy right now. Redsnow released a downgrader to take you back to 5.0.1 if for some reason you went to 5.1. From there j/b is about a 2 minute process.

New to the latest version and need help...

WTF is with Siri? Every time I try to listen to a voicemail that bich comes on instead. I touch play. I see that the recording has started its playback. And yet when I put the phone to my ear, I get Siri instead. It's maddening.

HTH me.

Looks like 5.1.1 J/B is out in the next day or two. Reading the tea leaves this will probably be the last major update until IOS6. For A5 phones it could be the last J/B OS you have access to for the life of your phone so for gods sake tinyumbrella up all that #### and back that up offsite in 3 or 4 places.

:goodposting: Thanks for the update.

Broke my J/B and went to 5.1.1 (saved my blobs first in case Pod2g gets shot or something) I'm ready for DashboardX. Looks like the new killer J/B app to have basically giving you a brand new phone. Of course the Android guys will point to how it is basically Android lite at that point.

http://www.redmondpie.com/top-must-have-dashboard-x-widgets-for-iphone-ipad-ipod-touch/

Oh, and IOS6 will finally include support for SBS type features. About ####### time.

I'm getting bored with the phone, so I've been thinking about jailbreaking it. I'm on 5.1.1, so I'd either have to roll back to 5.0 or take the most recent tethered redsn0w. My question is - how solid is the jailbreak? How frequently are you needing to reboot your phone where being on a tethered jailbreak is a major pia? I can't remember the last time I had to reboot my phone, so I'd like to think that being on a tethered jailbreak wouldn't be that big of a deal...

Scratched the #### out of my screen this weekend. No idea how I did it as I've had it in the same pocket as keys for some time now without issue.

Couple nice gouges. Nothing bad enough to warrant replacement just yet though. Screens are only $75 or so, not a big deal when it needs swapping.

5.1.1 untethered for all devices will be out in a matter of days. follow @pod2g

Update us here when it's out and tell me what I need to do to jailbreak my 4S like I'm...well, me.

I bet replacement screens are much cheaper in 3-4 months.

 Depending on the upgrade on the iPhone5 I may just sell this one and upgrade. We'll see how it shakes out. That said... agreed 100%.

Greenpoison 5.1.1 is out today. I ran 3 days without a J/B. I have no idea how any of you all can manage that. What a horrific experience.

Yes, already installed. From a fresh-ish 5.1.1 install. Some people are reporting issues going to it from non-fresh installs and doing a wipe, absinthe, restore, profit type solution to get around the problems.I think the problem is that the cydia servers are overwhelmed right now and it is hanging some people up. I had zero issues FWIW, but I did it early this AM.

I downloaded it first thing this morning. Just did the install and waiting for the restore & sync to finish.

Is there a place for answers on why it wouldn't work? I'm getting an error saying the jailbreak didn't work. I've retried it 3x with no luck. I followed the instructions here

Ok it says before running the jailbreak I need to restore to a "clean version"?Coming from a jailbroken 4.1... does that mean DL the official ios 5.1? What about my jailbroken apps?

Just got my daughter an iPhone4 today, yea I know, but it was only $100.Can you please explain jailbreaking to me like I'm a 6yr old, and what are the benefits of it.I paid the extra $100 for Apple Care, was that a waste of money?

Did you sign a contract with the phone, or did you buy the phone outright?

My opinion, but you should have waited until October for the next iPhone. That, or moved to Straight Talk with an iPhone for only $45/mo.

I know, but I'm not your typical FBG who can blow $500+ on a cellphone.

Another question, how do you make a song from itunes into a ring tone?Got this off Google, but it's an old post.Does this work, or is there an easier way?

Go to iTunesClick on the song you likeRight Click itOptionsPut the Start Time and End Time of when you want itClick OkGo to Advanced on the ceilingdrop down to "Create AAC Version"iTunes will create another track right below the originalgo back to Options of the Original..unclick the Start Time and End Time.Go to the Actual Physical Location of that new track (Should be iTunes Media Folder)go to the Extension, will be M4ACHANGE it to M4R.Drag the new M4R into iTunesGo to Ringtones Section, and it WILL BE THERE as a ringtoneSync up iPhone, and you are GTG

That is the way I do it. It's a few steps but very easy.

HFS....culdeus saying Cydia servers are overwhelmed is an understatement. Still wayyyyyy slowwwww at 6:11 am ET.

A tip for JB folks: If you are using AptBackup to retrieve all of your JB apps/themse/settings, make sure you fully load all of the Cydia packages prior or you will have issues. First hand knowledge here. :bye:

Ive tried jailbreaking my iPhone4 5x and no luck. I get all the way to the finish and get the "hmmmm something is wrong" and it restores back to my old settings. Can't find a fix anywhere. :thumbdown:ETA: Looks like they released a bug fix already - Absinthe 2.0.1. We'll see if that works.

2.0.1 worked. :excited:

What are you guys doing different with your phones now that you jailbroke them?

I only tried once and something went awry so I had to restore my whole phone. Haven't tried since.

the top reasons I jailbreakSBSettings (The A#1 reason to jailbreak above all others, will finally get implemented in IOS6 in some fashion though)AlsoMailEnhancer+ if you have several email accounts it really helps organize things 100% betterLockInfo >>>>>>>>>>>> The IOS5 Notification system. IOS5 tried to copy lockinfo and didn't quite get it right. I don't know why they just didn't buy the companyActivator - Change all the activation settings. IOS5 implemented some of these features, but was really half assed.Action Menu - Help text swipes. This I think would even be more money for IpadTetherMe - Enough saidSpringtomize - Sort of an all in one tweak manager. 3GUnrestrictor - Enough said5icondock - obviousSome new ones I haven't triedDashboardX - Makes your phone more like Android with widgets. This also looks very likely implement on IOS6. Long time coming.Stride - Android unlock styleIf you are still on IOS4BiteSMS - This actually has some advantages for IOS5, but not worth the money anymore on IOS5 IMOthere are also a ####load of Siri tweaks. I think Siri is a poorly formed POS, but maybe someone has made something of it in Cydia. I hear AssistantExtentions is good, but I haven't tried it. There are also a ton of tweaks to change things like the color of the bubbles, clear the bubbles, change what shows up on top line all that crap.

If something is crapping out on you then you need to read up on mobileesubstrate. It can flag what's giving you issues. Always buy official releases of stuff and don't go to the ihackstore. Most of that stuff is garbage and will straight #### you up bad.

Tried installing SBSettings and it just keeps timing out or giving internal server errors. I wonder if they're just being overrun by everyone right now.

I should've known a lot of these tweaks would cost $. I can see dropping $50 on this stuff in no time. Jailbreaking may be more useful for seriously heavy users. I may give it a shot on my iPad, which I use a bit more than the phone.

So far - meh.

Same thing always happens when a jb is back online. Keep in mind there are what? 2 months of people that never had a shot at a out of box break. Tons of pent up demand.

I didn't realize "jail breaking" was this necessary/popular (pick based on your perspective)
Only really necessary for people that have used things like sbsettings for more than a week. Going back to life without it simply sucks once you are used to it.
