The Apple iPhone Thread (6 Viewers)

Interesting. As an AT&T Unlimited customer, that would have been a deal-breaker for me. I would have just stuck with my iPhone 4.

AT&T announced earlier this afternoon that it would allow customers on a grandfathered unlimited data plan to keep their plan even when paying a subsidized price for the iPhone 5. The nation’s largest carrier looks to take things a different way, however. A Verizon representative confirmed with 9to5mac this evening that customers will only be able to keep their unlimited data plan if they pay full price for the iPhone 5 ($649 for 16GB). Furthermore, existing Verizon customers can keep their old Nationwide Usage Based plan. They will not be forced to switch to one of Verizon’s new Share Everything Plans when buying the iPhone 5 on a two-year contract.
Ok, that may cause me to reconsider. I'm grandfathered right now. What's the easiest way to find my monthly data usage?

ouch
Well, that certainly muddies things up even more for when I'm eligible for an upgrade in February. The option to sell my 4 and almost break even on a new 5 doesn't sound so good anymore.

Wondering how scratch resistant the new aluminum back will be. Especially the anodized black. The black could easily look like #### after some heavy use/scratching.

hmmm, installed itunes 10.7 and still not able to download ios6. Getting same error: "The iPhone xxxiPhone could not be updated becuase the firmware is not compatable". :kicksrock:

The downside is that AT&T is only allowing FaceTime over cellular for their 'Shared Plan' customers. So if you are grandfathered into unlimited data on AT&T, you can't use FaceTime over cellular. They are making you switch out to shared data.

You can look at the att app. I havent looked in a long time but I think it has monthly usage. Ill check now

You don't need an AT&T app, they will text you your usage right from the iPhone's Settings menu:SETTINGS/PHONE/AT&T SERVICES/VIEW MY DATA...

Cant seem to find the history, but it does give you what you have done this month. I am 8 days into my billing cycle and I am at 202.83 mb. I dont know how much I use on any given month because I am unlimited but its always nice to have the option with young kids so I can stream my slingbox when Im not on wifi

cool. There is so much that this phone does that I am unaware of. And I have never even jailbroken it

hmmm, installed itunes 10.7 and still not able to download ios6. Getting same error: "The iPhone xxxiPhone could not be updated becuase the firmware is not compatable". :kicksrock:
Did you download the right file? I have downloaded and updated iPad 3 and iphone 4s with no problems
Yup, downloaded iPhone 4 (GSM)iOS 6 GM for my iPhone 4 on AT&T. Just checked the file properties, it is has 0 bytes as its size. I guess that could be a problem.

1) So exactly how much space does it take up and weight does it add? My guess is not enough to make a huge diffence at this point. I would much rather have the ability than not.

2) My point was it is not more complicated. I travel a lot and have a dedicated charger in both of my offices and my bedroom. I also carry a normal cable in my laptop bag. The point being I'd prefer to just drop my phone on a charging pad. Schiller is the one make the comment one is harder than the other.
Take a look here.Inductive charging includes adding a small coil just inside the back of the phone's case. It's not extremely thick but it's likely to add a good 10-15% to the thickness of the i5 or S3. In addition I'm unaware of it's compatibility with the aluminum backplates used in iPhones.

Inductive charging isstill in it's infancy and is not without issues. Heat due to inefficiency is one starting point. You think people whined about their iPad's getting hot...wait till their phones get that temp. Also it's wasteful (80-85% efficient at best right now)... not something a "Green" company like Apple wants to align themselves with just yet.

And finally... I can all but guarantee you that Apple won't get involved until the phone can "pair" with the charging mat to sync wirelessly as well. No sense in just charging your phone if you're not syncing your data as well.

Regards to the mat... it's up to you... I guess you can carry a small charger the size of a small pair of in-ear headphones.... or carry that same item but connected to a mousepad-esque type sheet for you to set your phone on. Me.. I'd rather just take the extra 0.5 seconds to slip a plug into the phone ... particularly given the other issues with the tech right now.

In a year or two I'm SURE they will have efficiency up.... the charging stations will be smaller, and will also sync the phones... and I'm sure costs will come down and the in-phone electronics will be smaller as well. THEN you'll see Apple getting in bed with the tech. No sense in doing so beforehand though if it's not really 100% ready.

IMO nitpicking over an immature tech that pretty much no phone has right now is a bit silly. But that's just my take.
1. Why would sync be an issue. I haven't had a phone that couldn't wirless sync in a long time. Pretty sure my sons iPhone does that also. So I don't see this as an issue at all.2. I have yet met a serious traveler that doesn't have multiple cables. People that use it day to day that I know have the one charger by the nightstand. Once again something that is not an issue. If you travel once a year the pad would not be an issue.

3. Seems like size wouldn't be as big a deal I would take the 0.03 increase in size for it.

I'm sure apple is waiting to see what the market is and will follow up with inductive charging once it has been worked out. They have already filed a patent for an inductive charger at this point.
:lmao: I just realized arguing with a wall is silly.

You're right. It's a travesty. It should have had inductive charging.
Agreed. Don't recall calling it a travesty. I pointed out that the Schiller comment was disingenuous.

servers are swamped. I had to download the iphone version twice to get it to download. ipad download was slow, but easier.

Ok, just got off the phone with Verizon. Basically, unlimited data is going away. We'll lose it the next time we upgrade either phone unless we pay the unsubsidized amount. But he also checked my data and there's only been one month that I've gone over 2GB this year. So I should be good just switching to the 2GB plan. Or we could go to the unlimited talk/text and share a 4GB pool and it would cost us an additional $30/month. But with my new ministry position, I figure to be using a lt more cell minutes in the future, so that might make the most sense anyway.

Ok, I thought it appeared on my desktop awfully fast for the download. I'll keep trying. Thanks.

Is your phone jailbroken? I was getting that message until I restored my phone back to factory settings. You're going to lose your jailbreak anyway.

No, the file was just appearing on my desktop as finished and not fully downloaded, or at all. It's going now, the file is growing in size little by little.thanks for all the help peeps.

so i'm grandfathered in for the at&t plan but my problem is I get no reception at work. The early termination fees are $325 if I break the contract a day after I get 5 but that would still make more sense than buying it without a carrier from apple tonight. I don't understand why sprint offers the phone at 3 am tonight for new customers while verizon does not. Sprint is only 3g right?

my gift to you guys...

OS6 For iPhone 4s

I gotta think my server is more reliable than theirs....

For obvious reasons please don't pass this around. If bandwidth gets crazy from a leak I'm pulling the file down.

Sprint couldn't technically "waive" my eligibility upgrade time (I'm not eligible until 10/1), but they are running an "Upgrade now" program that allows folks who are close to their upgrade date to upgrade early.

iPhone5's for me and the wife will be ordered tomorrow AM.

Just got OS6 on my phone.

Very nice allot of little changes that work very well. I like the panorama camera and love that you can now subscribe to podcasts.

Are alot of these things 4S or 5 specific? The map program seems pretty similar to google maps on my 4.
A lot of them are OS6 specific. The 3D mode on Apple MAps is much nicer than anything I'd seen on Google Maps.

Google Maps seemed like they just mapped the overhead imagery on a topographic elevated surface.

Apple Maps is actually fully 3D. You can look under bridges... signs that jut out will actually obscure stuff sometimes but not others...

It's pretty impressive. (not all areas have that sort of distortion. I think lighting was off the day they scanned beale street downtown. Other parts are much clearer.

you are the guy I want to talk to. I'm planning on getting the slingbox and using it frequently with the 4g but not sure if it's even worth it with the limited data. any help you can give me on how much data it uses to do slingbox per hour?

 I had been using the DMD panoramic app. It was alright but I very much prefer the "Sweep" approach with the new iOS6 camera. LIke how it gives you a guide to keep it level and tells you when you're going to fast or so. Resolution is spectacular (Huge file). Eager to see the overall image quality on the new iPhone 5 cameras with it's improved sensors.

HERE is a good example of the new 3D mode of iOS 6's Maps App

(Be sure to maximize the image in your browser so you can see the detail)

I picked cowboys stadium because it's readily identifiable. It also has those spires jutting out so you can see the actual 3D mode vs just mapping an overhead graphic onto a raised "Floor".

Each image is rotated around and zoomed in a slightly different manner to provide a taste of what this is like. It's not just major landmarks either. You can fly around through any non-rural area. Was just flying down the streets of rome outside the vatican. This seems even more powerful than google earth with regards to detail.

The crispness and level of zoom on this app is just insane. If something like this existed before I simply didn't realize it. :excited:

I have iOS6 on my iphone 4. None of these things you guys are talking about show up.

I have the new apple map, but I got no 3D stuff going on. Nor do I have any panoramic camera ####.

Seems like this would've been name ios5.2 or something if iPhone 5 wasn't coming out. Doesn't seem like too many new or improved features.

If you'll be streaming video often you'll easy through 2 gb easily. If I stream Pandora everyday on my drive to work about 1hour, 4 times a week I have to watch my data.

####. about how much data would you estimate you go through in an hour of video? edit, apparently 1 hour = 0.5 GB. :(is there a carrier out there with unlimited that's worth it? are there any real options left or is it you just have to pay?
