So apple maps is garbage right now?
Seems that way. I just updated my iPad and wanted to check it out. My very own street is wrong as are the gas stations near by. Also whereas google had the lot lines drawn, imaps is just a big gob of land. I wish I didn't upgrade the iPad to ios 6. I doubt I ever use Siri on it. What else does it do for iPad even?
Do you people live in flyover country or something? Apple Maps is even spot on in down here in hickville, TN.
Maps comparison

Bowling Green

Hometown

It's terrible now.
Just wait until you try traffic with Apple vs. the way it was before.

Do people see the Flyover thing as something they'll actually use on a consistent basis? I'm sure I could be wrong, but it just seems to me that I would think it was cool for the first week or so and then never use it after that. I've had Google Earth on my 4 for a long time, but can't remember the last time I even opened it up. Is this significantly different somehow or is it just that it has been incorporated into maps?

So are people camping out like years past? Last time I bought an iPhone was the 3GS and I was able to go to the Apple store by Central Park and wait about 2 hours in line to get it. I thought I read something about a shortage or something for the 5 but I also heard there should be less demand this time around. Is anyone else going to wait in line tomorrow?

I think I'm going to take a shot on Saturday at an Apple store and try and grab a reserved phone that wasn't picked up and leftover for resale. The Mrs did this last year for the 4s, worked like a charm.

What's a reserved phone? Are you able to buy it online for pickup at the store?
 And those that aren't picked up go on sale the next day.eta: Is it possible that so many people ordered online that the stores won't be slammed and sell out of their stock?

so is there an iphone for noobs (or android to iphone) thread anywhere?
What do you want to know? From what I understand you can take your Android to the place you buy the iPhone at and they can transfer over your contacts. From there you just use the phone, it is pretty self-explanatory in terms of plugging it into your computer which I think launches iTunes and synch's your phone with your music library. Then you can buy apps either from your desktop or from the device itself.

No, I mean cool stuff for iphone. I don't know...nothing specific. All my contacts are in the cloud with google, so I won't need to go to the store.

The option when I go to buy online for:
Pick up: Visit an Apple Retail Store starting 9/21
is grayed out. I guess I'll just have to go to the store tomorrow.

Just be sure you don't try to transfer something onto your phone from a computer other than the one you initially synced it to. It's not joking when it says it will delete everything on your phone.

This maps thing is going viral. What a mess.
Is there any way to get the google maps app back?
did you save shsh blobs? I would revert back to ios5 if you were foolish enough to update without an untether.
I have no clue what that means. I've only updated my iPad, so it doesn't really matter there. The iPhone5, however, is screwed with the maps. Google needs to release its free standing app.

Google has already stated that they have no plans of doing this.

I wonder if people will figure out how to load IOS5 on Iphone5. I wonder if there is a rom code mismatch that will result in doing so.

I thought it was in the works, just behind youtube in their priority list.

"Podcast" app required with iOS6 is horrible. With iOS5 and earlier, one could stream right from iTunes. It was great. Now, one must download the "Podcast" app. Streaming is still possible, but if you leave the app, the audio pauses. So, you can't listen to the podcast and then multi-task with other apps. At lunch, I was driving and the audio paused every two minutes whenever the screen auto-locked. I would just need to slide to unlock and the audio would pick back up, but when I'm eating and driving at the same time, it gets annoying. I guess I can change the auto-lock time.

I know I can download the podcasts to my Macbook at home and then sync them up. But I don't always remember to do so, and honestly, because streaming was so easy before, I never felt a need to download the podcasts.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Hopefully there's an update to the "Podcast" app soon. There's plenty of bad reviews on App Store page on Apple's website.

Read that in a review the other day. Although Google's most recent statement seems purposefully ambiguous. So maybe Apple has already reached out with all of the bad press their maps app is getting.

do you mean on the computer I synced my iphone with? With my android, everything is tied to my google account.

Seems like a way to help reduce data usage on cell networks. Streaming a podcast for 90 minutes uses up a lot more data than downloading it and playing it from your phone. I think it's great, since I only plug my phone into iTunes once every few months now that there's the cloud and wifi updates. So I would have to manually download podcasts, now I can subscribe right on my phone and have them automatically downloaded.

Now they are saying the new iPad clock is a ripoff of the Swiss train clock or something?

Does apple own the old google maps app? If not, can't google release it into the app store and charge for it? Or does apple have it because it was native?

Just received confirmation that the two phones we ordered at around 5am CST via AT&T's premier store have shipped via UPS and should be here tomorrow.

oh happy day

OH, and btw, my experience with Maps has been good so far.

I can search for what I want to search for in my city, and use siri to get me directions to where I want to go, and it's turn by turn.

Can't ask for muhc more than that. Who gives a %# about sattelite imagery or really cares about 3-d cities. Seriously folks?

If you're complaining about a map being outdated and not having your address, I understand the grip, or something not being in the right spot...fine.

But actually, my house is relatively new, and a search for my house on my street on the former google maps showed an incorrect location, whereas on Maps now on iOS 6 has it right.

It may take a few updates to get it all squared away, but I'm very happy with the implementation so far. My only pending worry is battery life using turn by turn navigation. When I used Tom-Tom, it drained battery quickly...we'll see how maps does.

decided i'd better get "on the list" at Walmart to have a chance at receiving one tomorrow (if I decide to actually go the iphone route)...

they said i'd have to buy the $25 gift card voucher and they'd put my name on the list...then when the phones come in they call down the list.

i asked to see how far down the list i'd be....they replied "you're the only one on the list"

I'd be surprised if Apple let Google's maps play on their iOS 6 field for a while. The goal will be to have iphone users report flaws, correct incorrect locations/addresses, and improve the application just like users improved the maps application over the years. Also, apple has a history of not allowing other apps to be published that replicate core functionality of the phone. Now that apple makes a maps app, they may use that reasoning to reject it or stall it.Personally, i hope it gets stalled for a while to force apple to improve its own application, and to force users to submit errors to them at a huge rate, that quickly pulls the map app up to near google maps standards...and with turn by turn directions on top of it, it'll be all the better.

It's almost as if there's one issue that folks have to gripe about regarding EVERY iphone released.

So much hype, yet there has to be some minor detail people latch onto to point out the flaw in the device. Whether it's the death grip issue of dropped reception that affected only a very very small minority of people, or wifi issues on an ipad, or now this mapping application, it seems like people must have SOMETHING to grab hold of to criticize out of proportion.

Is the maps app perfect? No. Is it even as good as the one it replaced? In terms of accuracy, seemingly not. But how bad is it? Really, it's quite good. Turn by turn navigation is good, search recognition in my large city is good, siri integration is good...

I'm pleased with it. Sure, it has work before it's as useful as the google maps app, but that's been constantly being improved for 5+ years. Give apple a little bit of time to improve a pretty good quality app, albeit not perfect or not just as good as the app it replaced upon launch, but give it SOME time before ruling it a failure.

With the millions of users using the app, suggesting improvements, updating location information...it won't be long before its accuracy rivals google's, and with the other behind the scenes integration it has, it's gonna be a nice feature on the iPhone's for years to come. Feel free to bookmark this comment and ridicule me if next year this time the maps app isn't Significantly improved, and favorably comparable to google maps.

The point is that by replacing it with an inferior app, it takes away from the phone. Everything you said is true, but you also said that google maps is better. Why go backwards?

Yeah, I have to agree. If it wasn't ready for prime time yet, keep working in it and roll it out with the iPhone 6.

I guess Adonis is taking over for goons for now in making excuses.

What Leroy said is the point.

A mistake like this for Apple is rare...so of course people (and those railing on it so far have been Apple fans) are going to speak up about it.

Its not often they take away an app and replace it with one that simply is not nearly as good and has bugs like this. Looks like they pushed it out there before it was ready because they had already made the decision to go with it over google and had no choice.
