Then why did apple not have turn by turn while everyone else did?
I have no idea whose terms where unreasonable, Google or Apple's. I just don't think we have enough info to say "Google wouldn't allow turn-by-turn" and that's it.
Obviously BOTH companies found the other's terms to be unreasonable.. At the end of the day the only thing that matters is that Google wouldn't allow turn-by-turn on iOS (at a price that Apple was willing to pay). I think the problem here is that everyone seems to be trying to assign blame for a mistake when it is way too early to even say if a mistake was even made. At this point, all we have is click fodder for tech bloggers and some very vocal nerd rage. Yet Apple is selling the iPhone 5 faster than they can make them, breaking all previous launch records in the process. iOS 6 adoption rates are as strong as expected and satisfaction rates are nearly as high as they were for iOS 5. This is very similar to the Flash "mistake" that tech pundits and nerds raged about yet ultimately worked out great for Apple. It is a calculated risk that stands to have a large payoff in the long run.
I hope it's not nearly as bad as the Flash mistake. I'm buying i5's for me and my wife tomorrow, and will be thoroughly pissed if I have to suffer through years of an inferior maps product like iPhone users suffered by not having access to flash for years.
There is still no Flash on the iPhone. Maybe you'd be better off with a Samesung. :banned:
Not having flash isn't a big issue now. It was 3 years ago when the web was dominated by flash.
Ever wonder why the web isn't dominated by flash now? Partly due to apple drawing a line in the sand.Still, I was pretty frustrated too, but, can't argue with the user experience and battery life on the iPhone. I knew I could get another phone with flash support if it mattered that much to me, and it turns out that it didn't outweigh the other stuff I liked with the iPhone.Maps on the other hand, I don't think I'm missing out on much right now. This might change when I go to a city and can't find something important, but even then I'll be able to check google maps to confirm. And the other 95% of the time I use Maps in my local area, I will be unlikely to have a problem.

A couple of thoughts:

I've used the turn by turn directions a couple times locally so far with no problems. Whatever flaws it may have, it's a huge upgrade for me compared to the previous native maps app.

I just went to download an app from the App Store and when the keyboard came up for me to enter my password, there were a bunch of lines flickering across the screen. I googled it and apparently I'm not the only one who's seen this. Not sure if it's a hardware or software issue, and I'm not especially concerned about it, but it was a bit disappointing. Hopefully it's fixed soon.

I like the taller screen but the iPhone 4 fit perfectly in this little spot in the center console of my car. Obviously the 5 doesn't, which sounds like a trivial thing but I was slightly annoyed when I realized this. Need to find a new place for my phone while driving.

I've had sex twice in the past two days since I got the iPhone 5, which is more frequently than I was having sex when I had the iPhone 4. Pretty sure that's not a coincidence.

Is there any way to get Siri to interact with the Spotify app? I use Spotify for all my music needs, but it seems when you ask Siri to play music she looks for it in iTunes or whatever. I'd like to just say "Play Holocene" or whatever and have her open up Spotify and play it. Is possible? Does Siri "learn" things like this over time?

I like the new earbuds, they're more comfortable than the old ones imo.

Jobs may have accelerated the move to html5, but by all accounts, the migration had begun a year or so before Jobs' little tantrum over flash. I know we'd began working on conversions once html5 became ratified.

Just ridiculous.

Went to meet some friends at a park district event this weekend... of course the location wasn't there on Apple maps but it was there on Google maps. Glad to hear that others are still loving the Apple maps though.

What are iphone 5 users using for their car and/or work chargers? Did you go to your provic=der or Apple Store or use a third party? I need both a car charger and an AC charger for my worklplace. Not thrilled about paying ridiculous Apple prices.

I'm just waiting in third party products. Can't be too long, I would think.

I see that Apple has the USB to Lightning cord for $19. That doesn't include the small block that plugs into the wall. But if the old blocks for the 3 and 4 still work, most of us have plenty of those sitting around now. I don't think $19 is too bad.

Bought the double USB car charger with the phone and am carrying my cord to and from. None too happy about it.

For me, it's about a car charger. And $29 for the lightning adapter seems steep to me.

You can get a USB car charger, and then just use your existing USB to Lightning cord (or get a second one to leave in the car if you don't want to carry it back and forth). This may not be a cheaper alternative, but at least it's more versatile as you can use the USB charger with any device that has a USB cord, and you're not locked into a charger that only works with the iPhone 5. This is what I'm doing.

I've used Maps every day since release day without a problem yet.Turn by turn directions, using Siri to "Give me directions to XXXX", works great. Better App than google maps, at least for me. Results may vary.
We get it. Nothing does not work for you and Siri never makes a mistake when your using it. Good for you.

Nope. Not at all.

You know what the app store doesn't have that someone could sell a ton of? An app that does your pool calculations for you and tracks it over time, plus chemicals used so you know when to restock.

None of the ones you can get are worth even downloading for free right now. Put a decent one up and for sure you have a hit, even a small one.

Is anyone else having trouble hearing callers? Any suggestions?
:bag: So i figured out the problem. Kept the original plastic covering on the iphone waiting to remove until new screen protectors arrive, didnt realize that it covered the speaker.
 :lmao:
Friggin' Apple! First it's the faulty maps app, and now the plastic covering muffling callers. Just one more thing for the "Androids" to latch on to...

get one of these. http://www.amazon.com/eForCity-Universal-Charger-Apple%C2%AE-Charging/dp/B000DCP4QKOh and I did the same thing with the plastic on the back of my Razr :lmao:

When buying a new iPhone, the taxes are based on full retail price, right, and not the subsidized price? What are the full retail prices for each GB-level?

Thanks

How are the new earbuds?
I think they're pretty nice. Comfortable fit in my ear (although I'm sure that varies from person to person) and much nicer sound. Deeper bass. I like them.
Thanks, anyone else?
I think I have weirdly-shaped inner ears or something, because the old earbuds would always make my ears hurt after a while. Haven't experienced that with the new ones, though I've only used them a couple of times.

I wear headphones all the time. In car, around house, etc. The previous ones would hurt my ears after a bit of time, but not too bad. The new ones do fit considerably better, although I had to learn early about which ear to put which in, based on the speaker being on a certain side. The sound is better as well, but nothing stunning. Just clearer.

Never used the old earbuds (from my iPod...like others, they hurt my ears...always went with a smaller bud with softer things on them that went in the ear)...interested in these new ones...look like a similar design to the "Yourbuds" I wear to run (and other styles like that).

Seems several places are getting away from the traditional bud.

Almost overnight the battery in my 4 has gone to the crapper. It was at 35% an hour ago and is now down to 26%. By the time I get home it will be under 20. I installed carat already and don't think anything is in the background burning up the battery so (actually, just noticed my personal hotspot has been on for a few days. No idea if that is the cause since it wasn't connected to anything). Anyway, I've got an upgrade coming Sunday and the local AT&T store has 64g in stock so I'll probably solve my problem that way and pass this one off to someone else.

Foxconn workers strike over iPhone 5 demands, labor group saysBy Julianne Pepitone @CNNMoney October 5, 2012: 7:56 PM ETNEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Thousands of factory workers at Foxconn went on strike Friday to protest their working conditions on the iPhone 5's production lines, according to a report from an independent workers' rights organization.Workers at Foxconn's plant in Zhengzhou, China, were furious after management enacted "overly strict demands" for production of Apple's (AAPL, Fortune 500) new iPhone 5, according to a report late Friday from China Labor Watch (CLW), a New York-based advocacy group that works closely with sources in China. The strike began at 1 p.m. local time (1 a.m. ET) on Friday, CLW said, and the majority of its participants were from the on-site quality control line for the iPhone 5. It remained ongoing into the evening, causing a work stoppage that "paralyzed the production lines," the group said.Foxconn did not respond to emailed requests for comment that were sent after normal business hours at its Taipei, Taiwan, headquarters. Apple also did not respond to a request for comment. The trouble began after workers were given new, impossibly strict standards, demanding precision down to increments as small as two-hundredths of a millimeter, according to CLW."Employees could not even turn out iPhones that met the standard," CLW's report said, because of "design defects" in the iPhone 5.Foxconn's exacting demands, coupled with the fact that workers were not allowed to take vacation time during a recent week-long holiday, created a high-pressure situation. Workers and inspectors clashed in fights that sometimes turned physical, the CLW said, with some hospitalized as a result.Foxconn's Zhenghou complex employs around 190,000 people, according to CNET, which recently visited the area. Apple CEO Tim Cook made an appearance at the plant in March.CNNMoney spoke to U.S.-based staffers at CLW, which is a frequently cited source for Western media outlets reporting on Chinese labor issues.Bessie Chang, a CLW program assistant, said it was the organization's Chinese-based staff that first heard rumors of the strike. CLW director Li Qiang spoke to his sources at Foxconn to verify the report.Qiang, speaking through Chang as a translator, said the strike continued as of 11 p.m. local time (11 a.m. ET) Friday. He hasn't received information since then, but he noted that Foxconn production lines typically run 24 hours a day. He did not know whether workers on every shift are participating in the strike.Foxconn has been in the spotlight amid growing public concern about labor conditions in the overseas factories that many U.S. gadget makers rely on to produce their devices. Apple is just one of many companies that outsources its manufacturing, but as the industry's most popular and profitable company, it's under the most intense scrutiny.A spate of suicides at Foxconn factories in 2010 garnered media coverage of allegedly harsh working conditions, including unsafe facilities and illegal amounts of overtime. In January 2012, Apple joined the dependent labor-rights organization Fair Labor Association (FLA), which promptly began inspections of the working conditions at Foxconn's many factories.FLA released an assessment in March that documented dozens of major labor-rights violations, including excessive overtime, unpaid wages and salaries that aren't enough to cover basic living expenses. The FLA's report said Foxconn agreed to work with the group on improvements, including enacting "full legal compliance" with Chinese work-hour laws by July 2013.Last month, a large-scale incident involving 2,000 workers forced the temporary closure of Foxconn's Taiyuan factory. One worker at the scene termed the situation a riot, and it led to the hospitalization of about 40 people.

The new earbuds are WAY better. The fit is really comfortable. They don't fall out like the old ones did. And the sound is way better/clearer/better bass. Overall they're easily the best earbuds I've ever used.

Has anyone who pre-ordered a day or two after the initial Sept 14th pr-eorder gotten their phones yet? I ordered on the 16th and when I did Apple said 2-3 expected delivery. Three weeks later my order status still says "Processing Items."

Ticks me off that a lot of people who didn't pre-order got phones in store 2 weeks ago and here I am still waiting.

Turns out my battery issue was because I had left the peronsal hotspot on. I'm glad because I can sell it now without worrying that the battery is jacked up.

I went to the APple store the other day and was surprised how much I like the white one. Upgrade is tomorrow and ATT store apparently has 64G of both in stock.... :coffee:

Just got a new iPhone to replace my now deceased Windows Phone 7. Since Sprint no longer carries Windows Phone and I switched over to Apple mainly for the size and camera. I just an not a fan of close to 5" screen the to top Android phones have right now. My wife carries a Samsung with a 4.3" screen which is really nice.

I have 14 days to decide if I want to move to Android or not. My primary uses are Music, Podcasts, E-mail, Calendar, GPS, and light photography. I have a 7" tablet for Video, Games and Reading.

So here are a few questions.

1) Pictures/Videos-Looking for way to synch pictures and videos to my NAS at night. Old system I could just plug-in and it would wireless sync everything to my sercer connected NAS.

2) Music - Is there a way to pin your favorite artists to the app screen. In windows I could pin them and just flick down to get to my favorite artist/new albums, etc.

3) Email - Is there a way to pin individual mail accounts to the app screen. I have three separate e-mail accounts and I would pin each one to my app screen and would get a count of new e-mails in each.

4) Calendar - Is there a way to see shared google calendars. Old phone I could toggle the entire families and assistants calendar on and off depending on who's day I needed see.

5) Music - Looking for unlimited music options. I used the Zune pass on my old phone which gave me unlimited access to the Zune library and 10 free songs for $15 a month.

6) Calendar - Is there a way to see the next appointment in the lock screen?

Sure there are a lot more questions. So far the phone is Ok but setup and options are very odd to me.

Most of this you are going to have to jailbreak to get, and it would be a pretty dirty jailbreak. Widgets and things like that are pretty sketchy. Some of that is clean jailbreak material. 1) 5) 6) are all easy and stable jailbreaks. At times 1) gets through the app store without being caught by Apple. 2)3) are j/b widgets which are possible, but prone to crashes though I've never seen any with that exact implement of the music one you describe. I'm not sure I follow 4 exactly how you draw it up. That may be on a stock os if I interpret it in one way.
