The Apple iPhone Thread (1 Viewer)

Just got a new iPhone to replace my now deceased Windows Phone 7. Since Sprint no longer carries Windows Phone and I switched over to Apple mainly for the size and camera. I just an not a fan of close to 5" screen the to top Android phones have right now. My wife carries a Samsung with a 4.3" screen which is really nice. I have 14 days to decide if I want to move to Android or not. My primary uses are Music, Podcasts, E-mail, Calendar, GPS, and light photography. I have a 7" tablet for Video, Games and Reading. So here are a few questions.1) Pictures/Videos-Looking for way to synch pictures and videos to my NAS at night. Old system I could just plug-in and it would wireless sync everything to my sercer connected NAS. 2) Music - Is there a way to pin your favorite artists to the app screen. In windows I could pin them and just flick down to get to my favorite artist/new albums, etc.3) Email - Is there a way to pin individual mail accounts to the app screen. I have three separate e-mail accounts and I would pin each one to my app screen and would get a count of new e-mails in each.4) Calendar - Is there a way to see shared google calendars. Old phone I could toggle the entire families and assistants calendar on and off depending on who's day I needed see.5) Music - Looking for unlimited music options. I used the Zune pass on my old phone which gave me unlimited access to the Zune library and 10 free songs for $15 a month.6) Calendar - Is there a way to see the next appointment in the lock screen?Sure there are a lot more questions. So far the phone is Ok but setup and options are very odd to me.
Most of this you are going to have to jailbreak to get, and it would be a pretty dirty jailbreak. Widgets and things like that are pretty sketchy. Some of that is clean jailbreak material. 1) 5) 6) are all easy and stable jailbreaks. At times 1) gets through the app store without being caught by Apple. 2)3) are j/b widgets which are possible, but prone to crashes though I've never seen any with that exact implement of the music one you describe. I'm not sure I follow 4 exactly how you draw it up. That may be on a stock os if I interpret it in one way.
1) So my son always copies his picures off by drag-and-drop. That's all the options I have to locally get them to my server. I really don't want to eat bandwidth with iCloud but it might be the only option. Kinda sucks though.2) I'm going to miss.3) I did find a work around for the e-mail, kinda sucks. I setup the built-in e-mail for personal then combined my two work accounts into one g-mail account (Account A pull Account B data). I then set up g-mail app to pull that account. Same effect just a lot messier.4) Basically i want to see my kids calendars on my iPhone on my schedule. My Windows phone accomplished this just by connecting to g-mail. It would then show all scheduled items in the color you select for each calendar. For example Mine would be Red, Sons Blue, Daughters Pink. So if we all had 4:00pm appointments I would see them all on one calendar screen.5) So to get unlimited music subscription I have to Jailbreak. Not good. I was hoping there was an equivalent service. 6) Really surprises me this is not available as on OS option. I mean navigation runs on the lock screen why not put a appointment there. Things I like so far.1) Album art on lock screen - Glad they copied the Windows Phone. This is a great feature.2) Navigation on lock screen - Very cool how I can turn on navigation and turn the screen off. It will then pop up when a turn is needed with moving map and all. It then goes off after the navigation point is completed.3) Creating a quick and dirt play list is nice. Thing that tick me off.1) No Player controls on lock screen. If music is playing I should not have to double tap Home key to get player controls.2) No appointment on lock screen. I have to actually unlock device and pull down notifications to see next appointment.3) No wireless-sync of photos/videos to iTunes. To have such a nice camera this is a shame.4) I'm really worried about the Home button breaking. Seems like every action is attached to it.It doesn't feel as smooth as Windows Phone but so far it will work as a replacement. I do have to admit the build quality is much better than HTC (at least my old phone).

The home button isn't going to break. It isn't an HTC or Samsung or nokia or Motorola device.
Wife has had Samsung's and never had quality issues. I've had only HTC's for years and this is the only one I had that did not feel solidly built. Although it did work fine when it took a dive from the bleachers to the concrete. No matter what it feels like it is a lot of action for one button. After I posted that I started checking to see if I was crazy and found a ton of issues. Here's the last link I looked at My link

So one year does not seem solid to me. Time will tell, think I will use the trick mentioned to safe some wear and tear.

Looks nice. Biggest thing I see is no check box for Smart Playlists in getting my personal files over. I was looking at stuff on Xbox music 360 (Rebranded Zune). Seems they plan on bringing it to IOS and Android. That would be perfect since I used it on my Xbox and Laptops.

I managed to get skydrive, one note, xbox setup last night.

So another question on Music.

1. Is there a Smart DJ type feature. I was able to be listening to an artist and then when i hit the smart DJ it would build a play list from my device and the Zune library of similar songs/artists? I know it will not download stuff from iTunes like it did the Zune library to be complete but I would love to be able to do this on my current library. I have a little over 2,000 songs on it right now.

2. Quickest way to find artist? Again I was able to just scroll through like the iPhone has now but I could also tap a letter. That would pop up a list of letters press S and i am magically in the s section. With the iTunes/Ipod I can search hit S but then i still have the keyboard up still and not have the S section up. I get a list of anything with S in it. Kinda strange but I guess they expect a search to find it when I just want to go to the S's.

1. It's called Genius - in Music, under the playlist tab, it's at the top - genius playlist - you can create one using any song, and maybe an artist too. Also, the far left tab has some pre-done genius playlists made up of your music, by genre.2. Songs, albums, and artists all do this - far right of the screen in portrait orientation.

Went to playlists and I do not see it. I'm assuming icons will look like the itunes Verison. In playlists I have Add, then the ones that synced. I will have to research this and see what's up.

It works with iTunes Match, I've got it. Do you have iTunes on your computer? If so, I believe that's where you turn on genius.
yeah, I have it on my server. So I have to turn it on there for it to show up on the phone? I'll give that a shot when I get home. I haven't plugged it into the machine since I got it.

The home button isn't going to break. It isn't an HTC or Samsung or nokia or Motorola device.
I actually had issues with my home button on the iPhone 4. I'm not sure if they corrected it on the 4s and 5.
How long before you had issues?
Maybe a year. It happened on my second iPhone 4 as well.
I had all kinds of home button issues on my 4. Spent 2 months doing all of the "tricks" (Closing a stock app while holding down top button and home button, pushing up on dock connector while plugged in, etc) Drove me nuts, my thumb actually hurt from trying to hit that damn button so many times. Then, in yet another desperate google search for help, saw an article that linked home button issues to disk capacity. I realized that my phone was almost full, to the point that I probably couldn't install another app if I tried. After removing a ton of pictures that were taking up space, I haven't had a home button issue since. Odd, yes, but it worked like a charm.

I just made apple give me a new phone twice.

Wow, you have got to be kidding. A physical button not working due to disk space. Mind boggling, but at least it did not wear out I guess. A few UI tweaks could cut down on a lot of the unnecessary clicks.

Well I guess Wireless Sync does not update the genius feature on the phone. Why I have to plug a cable in to get this feature on the phone is beyond me. Guess I'll have to do that tonight.

It's probably not the button, but the lag/non response to the button's request. If my DVR is 98%+ full, there's a 10 second delay when using any of the buttons on the remote, from scrolling the guide to entering channel numbers.

Any docks out for this thing yet? Need something on my nightstand -- the charger cord is way too short...

What type DVR are you using? I don't see why a physical disk being full would cause a 10 second delay on the UI. The physical disks in a DVR are generally IDE. This should not impact system RAM or any other sub-controllers in the device. Seems like really bad design if that's the case. Same thing with the physical button. If your out of system storage (DRAM) it should not effect the CPU or RAM. The iPhone 5 has 1GB RAM and comes with varying DRAM storage. I just find it odd that having your device storage space full would effect a physical button.

i don't
It doesn't affect the button, but rather the response to the button press.
I guess I'm not getting it since the storage is a partitioned segment of the DRAM not RAM. Any controllers would not need to use DRAM to process a button press. The only way I could see it is if they are using paging which would wear out the DRAM at a faster pace and is another bad decision. Not to mention if they did go with paging a good design would use a separate partion from the actual storage partition. I know phone manufacturers do use paging but under very specific guidelines so as to reduce the wear on memory.A button not working in this situation is the equivalent of the screen not working if you use up all your storage space. I mean would you expect the touch interface controller or display interface to stop working in the same situation? If this is the actual case then it is very bad design.Edit: DRAM should probably be NAND but used it out of habit.

Google chairman Eric Schmidt says Apple “should have stuck with our Maps” — but that the company had “decided a long time ago” to do a rival version.Speaking to AllThingsD‘s Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg at the 92nd St Y in New York Wednesday night, Schmidt addressed the controversy over the Apple Maps app, which many have found to be replete with inaccurate and incomplete information.“They’ve discovered that maps are really hard,” Schmidt said. The former Google CEO — and former member of Apple’s board who stepped down after Android emerged as a rival to iOS — said he retained a “soft spot” for the company. But he wouldn’t confirm whether Google was working on an updated iOS 6 maps app of its own.“I don’t want to pre-announce products, but if we made one, they would have to approve it,” Schmidt said. “They haven’t approved all of our apps in the past.”This isn’t the first time Schmidt has waded into the Maps controversy, or suggested that Apple should have stuck with its Google Maps app — which it still has a license to use for the next year. (That’s why iOS 5 users still have it.)“What were we going to do, force them not to change their mind? It’s their call,” he told reporters in Tokyo last month, after Maps’ shortcomings became apparent. This is, however, the first time Schmidt has said Apple wanted to do its own version long in advance of Google Maps license renewal negotiations. It dovetails with reports that Steve Jobs was behind the decision that led to Apple Maps.Apple has quietly introduced small improvements to Maps in recent days, such as adding full 3D versions of the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge (which previously looked like it was melting). But given the vastness of the project, Google’s enormous head start, and the relative inferiority of the Google Maps web app, it may be time Apple CEO Tim Cook did more than apologize — and re-released the iOS 5 Google Maps app for iOS 6.

My company just upgraded me from a BlackBerry to an iPhone 4s. My only exposure to the world of Apple is an iPod Nano, and this is pre-touchscreen model. I'm hoping you guys can help me with a few things, so here is my type of usage, then some questions.

I travel a fair bit (1-2 overnights per week) and when flying I toss the phone in a compartment on my laptop bag that may have keys and other items in it. Otherwise, I carry it in my pocket, same side as a money clip style wallet.

Usage will be a fair bit of company email throughout the day, a good number of phone calls, and some web usage.

I also run, but I'm not sure if I'll use this for music/podcasts while running or just stick with the Nano. My music usage is about 50/50 music/podcasts.

I have a Kindle, so I'll do most of my ereading on that.

I suppose I may end up slapping some movies/TV shows on this at times to watch while flying.

Now the questions...

Will I need a screen protector to keep this phone looking good? If so, what's the best bang for the buck on that?

Likewise, will I need a case for it? Assuming I do, I'd prefer to not get something very bulky, just want it to give a fair amount of protection (I think the Otterbox may be a bit much).

With that type of usage, will I need to get one of the battery cases, and if so what is the best value in those?

Any tips/tricks to extend battery life?

This is my first real smartphone beyond the BlackBerry...What are some must-have apps (free is preferred)? Anything particularly helpful for travel?

I use Google a lot for mail, maps, Drive, chat...Do I download those apps separately or is there a bundle to put them together and make it easy?

Any other general tips/tricks I should know about? Shortcuts?

I am on the waiting list at radio shack. They got two in yesterday and called me. By the time I called back (maybe 5 minutes) to give my credit card to hold one, they already had two people on the way in to get them. :wall:

I used a minimal case and no screen protector for my 4S. The screen is still like new. Based on the drop tests, I wasn't comfortable without some sort of protection. But with my 5, I'm not using anything at all. I love how light and thin it is. Carry it in my front pocket comfortably. As for battery life, mine typically was running low by the end of the workday with moderate usage. If I used it a lot, I'd probably invest in a battery case.As for apps, I'm not aware of any bundle, and there are a lot of free travel-type apps. One app that I recommend to anyone with an iPhone or iPad s called Apps Gone Free. Every day you are alerted to a group of apps that are free for a limited time. Some are free only that day, others for that week. The larger % of the apps are games, but I've also gotten some decent productivity apps for free.

Paid for our coffees this morning at Starbucks with my phone. Pretty cool.

Since I installed the Starbucks app, Passbook flashes up a notification every time I walk past the local Starbucks when I get off the train and walk home at night. This morning I loaded up my Starbucks card with 20 bucks through the app. Walked into the store, pop open Passbook, it opens up to my Starbucks card. Put my phone up to the scanner when it's time to pay, and that's that. Within 5 seconds or so, the app already updates to reflect a decreased balance on my card after the purchase.

I nearly always have my phone out (had it out since I was checking lotto numbers), and all I needed to do was a couple swipes and pay. No digging into my wallet for a credit card, handing it over, and putting it back in and stuffing the wallet back in my pocket. I could get used to this. I hope Passbook will allow me to have a digital version of my AMEX card and other cards soon...

Not a swipe -- just hole your phone up so the screen faces that supermarket scanner looking thing next to the register. Was really fast.

FWIW... the regular Starbucks app has been doing this for years.

Right. Passbook isn't terribly useful today. But as more and more business start switching over to scan payment methods, it could become really convenient to have all those apps in one convenient location.

It seems like I'm definitely going to want a battery case for this. Any specific ones that are good or to be avoided?

Also, how can I create a group contact list for email distribution on here?

It shows me that I can upgrade to the new iOS. Is there any really good reason that I should or shouldn't do that? Right now with the old one I also have the old maps which seems to be the better choice of the two. What do I get with the new iOS that is useful to outweigh that? I don't use any iCloud stuff at this time, so that probably doesn't factor in.

not to be all fanboy but isn't this the same that all the apps like keyring as been doing? Put your card in the app and have it scanned. Same for boarding passes etc?I thought the new thing was with the NFC so you load up your wallet and just use the fastpass thing, no need to open the phone and have the "supermarket thing" scan the screen, just put back of phone against itNot a flame, serious question - is there something new to IOS?ETA: I've been using the keyring app for all my cards etc, my phone does not have the NFC

Which model iPhone do you have? For the 4/4S I HIGHLY recommend the PhoneSuit. Boost is okay. Mophie is garbage. iPhone 5 doesn't have any great battery cases out yet but the Boost is coming soon. Phonesuit is still in development.

I do not know what NFC is, but I know that the iPhone does not have it.

Near Field Communication... It's the thing on the samsuns s3 that you tap phones to exchange pictures, docs etc.You can load your google wallet and use the speedpass things at some registers. I have it on my tablet but couldn't get it to work :lol:Basically you load up a credit or deposit money into a google account. Walk up tap the phone on this and it pays. No scanning or opening apps etc. I don't know how well it worksI thought apple introduced something similar, I like to keep on top of the iphone so I can compare it for when it is upgrade time

,swas trying to figure out what was different/new here.
Maybe it's not. :shrug:I thought the different/new was keeping all these cards in one place, and the cards automatically popping up when you're in a location where you'll need it (boarding pass pops up in airport, Starbucks card when I'm at my local startbucks, etc.).From a practical perspective, it seems to me that Passbook is what will cause a lot more merchants to actually provide this functionality. iPhone seems to drive a lot of this stuff. Just the same way it drove everyone to go out and make an app, it may be what drives the merchants to release "Passbook friendly" apps.

I have the 4s, sorry for not putting that in originally. I was looking at the Phonesuit. Seems the two knocks on it are that it is a little pricey compared to other options and the top part is somewhat fragile. Any knowledge on this one: uNu case?In addition to group contacts, I'm having some issues with appointments. When I get appointment invites as attachments to emails, and accept them, they aren't showing up in my calendar. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?

As one of the Apple gurus here, do you have any input on if I should upgrade to the new iOS or not?

Are people running into battery issues with the i5? I have two Mophie bricks that took on my last sailing trip and they work great when I need to charge it up. Maybe I don't use my phone enough to need an external battery "case" attached to it at all times.

I want a case to protect it anyway, and don't want to have to remember to grab the brick. I always forget something while I travel, so I'd rather it not be that.
