The Apple iPhone Thread (4 Viewers)

Anyone ever have the power/sleep button get stuck and not work? Based on some googling, it looks like I'm screwed outside some complicated DIY repair possibility. That about right? It's a 4S.
Is it the button at the top? If so, I had that problem for a while before I bought a new one. I changed the triple tap (Instructions) of the home button away from the invert colors to the "Assistive Touch" this allows you to click "device" and then "lock screen" to solve this problem.

HTH.

Yup. Mines a 5 and it's broken. Took it in and it's a 2 week repair. I'd also have to spend 40 minutes filling out paperwork for a loaner phone. I'll deal with it until September.
My wife's 5 did this too. Apple knows and has a recall on it but a local loaner is only available from Authorized Apple Service so you basically need to go a few weeks without a phone to send it in. BS. Who's going to do that?

the note 3 is 5.7. I cant ever imagine anything smaller.
I currently have the Nokia 1520. Great phone. Nothing bad to say about it. But, it's just not for me. I will have to hold the 5.5" but from the video, the 5.5" is bigger than even my Nokia. If that is true, like the video shows, no way do I get that one. If the 5.5" phone, not just the screen but the whole phone, is smaller and feels better than my Nokia, than it will be tough to switch to that one and not the 4.7".

http://www.macrumors.com/2014/05/13/iphone-air-dimensions/

Using these numbers, the 5.5" is "virtually" the same size as the Nokia 1520 that I have. That is just too big for my liking. The 4.7" is about 1" shorter in length, which is good, and about half an inch less wide. That is about the sweet spot for my liking. The only downside Apple has done with this iteration is make the bottom and the top of the phone a waste of space. More screen space... less other space. Apple fixes that... sweet. And, I like the thickness of the iPhone 4 I had. Keep the phone thick so more guts can go into it.

For those looking for an "actual size" template for the two rumored iPhone 6 Sizes.

I created this simple PDF that when printed actual size will be representative of the rumored case dimensions

EDIT: Note that your browser will not show in actual size due to screen sizes / resolution settings. The only way to see actual size is to download the PDF and print it on standard size (LTR/8.5x11) sheet of paper without scaling (actual size).

No data on price points yet... but rumors of the 4.7" model coming out at lower price points than the 5s initially did.

If you put a gun to my head to guess on "with contract pricing" (prevalent in the US)

4.7" Model
16GB - $149
32GB - $249
64GB - $349

5.5" Model
32GB - $299
64GB - $399
128GB - $499

Does a good job of covering the spectrum of options.... there are rumors of 128GB models to accomodate those who are looking for more storage. The lower end range still gives them a "new" phone at the affordable end of the spectrum which could do high volume numbers to make investors happy.

I'd assume the 5s would drop to Free with Contract. Currently it's $149.

I wonder if one will sell out before the other. If I had to guess the bigger of the two sells out first and people in line are just going to buy the other one because they have to have a new device day 1.

I would guess the 16G of the smaller will be b/w 250 and 300 with $100 extra for each bump in memory.

I would guess the 16G of the larger will be 350 with 100 extra for each bump in memory. Although I could see the smallest version being a 32GB at an even higher price point.

I wonder how the bigger phone will affect long-term iPad sales.

When I had an iPhone, a tablet was nice to have around the house for more comfortable web surfing. Since I switched to the Note 3, I can't remember the last time I reached for one of the tablets in the house rather than my phone when both were available to me.

I agree. My wife got some android tablet recently with her S5, and I only use it if my battery is low. With the current Apple sizes it isn't that easy to browse the web, so their users still use their pads.

Happy to see that pricing on the 4.7. Have a 32GB and because of all my music I need to move to a 64GB I think.

This was the reason they didn't want to release a larger iphone until the market was saturated with ipads.

The turnover on tablets is looking to settle in the 3.5 year range. Phone turnover is half that.

I also think the staggered release of the two sized phones is no accident.

Has it been announced what devices will be able to run iOS8 yet? That will likely be my motivation to finally dump the iPad 2 that I have.

That's what I figured, and think the iPad2 is not going to be get it. Not that it matters iOS7 on the iPad2 is rough performance wise.

Well considering they have kept producing the ipad2 and dropped the other ones you might actually see a split here where the ipad3 gets the boot.

Sorry if it wasn't clear but this is a GUESS on my part based on what I think is slightly downward pressure on the phone market price-wise, combined with a touch of wishful thinking that factors in the two sizes. The 5.5" model can't go TOO high a price point, but there has to be a gap there. May see *99 instead of *49 at end of the 4.7 prices but that puts the small and large phones at same price points at capacity.

Current pricing on the 5s is 199/299/399 at those sizes though, and that's a flagship model.

Understand that it's a guess, I hadn't put much thought into it but what you said makes sense and I doubt the 4.7 will be the same price as the 5.5. So that's a good thing.

I think you're almost spot on. My guesses would be $50 more per phone.

The fact that they rarely change phone sizes has to be great for business. I'm sure they get the cost on their devices very low compared to Samsung who has many more models.

Money is first with Apple, not the consumer. They are a businesses, so this comes as no surprise.

I want to install Yosemite Beta 4 on my Air. Anyone know how to do it without a Dev account?

I see a lot of iPhone users with large cases, like the Otter Box. I wonder if they will continue to do this once the phones get larger?

Otter boxes are ugly... I still don't get the appeal when something like a lifeproof case offers comparable drop protection, superior liquid protection, and is damn near half the size

I have a somewhat bulky battery case because i'm a poweruser who would be lucky to get 4 or 5 hours out of any phone. I'm very curious to see how the battery life is on the iPhone 6 given the thinner profile.

I tried the lifeproof and wasn't happy with it. Besides for it not actually being water proof, it's a pain in the ### to keep removing the cap for earphones and opening the bottom for volume from the phone. Water isn't really my concern so I stuck with the otterbox. Would be nice if Apple was up to speed and actually made the phone dust/water resistant like it's competitor.

And they're saying the battery is a little more powerful in the 6, but that's to compensate for the larger screen, so it doesn't sound like battery life will be improved much, if at all.

Otter boxes are great for those of us with little kids.

I agree with the volume gripe on the Lifeproof cases, but they are absolutely waterproof if installed correctly.

i wondered that also. That would put a serious dent in Lifeproof's business.

Would be fun. Being that thin with a 2nd screen would be insane.

I've been patiently holding out to see if the rumors of bigger iphone6 are true. If so, I'll be sticking with Apple. If not, I'm outta here. The 5 is just too tiny any more....
Neat, although unlikely.

If we were to play the 'What if" game; What if they really did that, can you imagine how quickly 99.9% of the users would snap that second screen off! :)

Yeah, and all the crumbs and dust and crap in between the screens.

Just recently I've had a problem where when I try to talk on my iPhone, the sensor isn't reading that the phone is to my face. I usually end up hanging up on the person or pressing a hundred numbers or something. Is this a known problem? And if so, is there a fix?

The IT answer is restore your iPhone after a new backup
