The Apple iPhone Thread (5 Viewers)

Hey nerds, I know nothing about Apple as I'm an Android guy. Not here to talk #### because you should buy what you like but is an iPad 2, 2nd generation any good? My wife wants one for Facetime with grandma and her other siblings but I'm not dropping $550 just for that. The 2 is on Amazon for abut $350. Am I wasting money? TIA
I've got an iPad 2 that is still chugging along fine. I haven't had any apps that are too sluggish or anything, but in general I agree with Bender, it is getting a bit long in the tooth. For just a bit more I think it would probably be worth going with a newer model.
We have an ipad2 that's been just fine for the kids. I can see wanting more horsepower if it was for your own use, but for our kids (8 & 5) it's great.

I noticed that a lot of my music had different album cover art. Also, now a week later, no issues with the music playing in my car. This leads me to believe that the music was in the middle of checking for new album art and the downloading was messing with the player.

Anyone else still having any issues with music playing?

Now have one week at home and 2 weeks on the road with the new iPhone 6 on VZW and I'm extremely pleased...

• VZW's network is awesome. So damn fast compared to CSpire. Coverage has been outstanding as well. First trip was MEM>MCO with a drive down to PBI. Then a Flight back PBI>ATL>MEM. Coverage at airports was obviously impeccable. Coverage on the drive down from MCO and around stuart / palm city / west palm beach was impeccable as well. Second trip was a drive from MEM to MSY through rural MS. Was still in 4G the vast majority of the time with occasional drops into 3G. Noticed we slipped into 1x (voice only) at one point for about 30 seconds. Otherwise, outstanding coverage.

• Battery life is great on this phone when compared to my iPhone 5. Perhaps it was partly the age of the 5 (1 year old, though most battery cycles were on a battery case, not the phone)... but while this phone is not good for a full ACTIVE day on the phone, I was more than comfortable heading out for a long wedding night at 5pm without feeling compelled to carry a charger with me. WOuld have never dared to do that with my 5.

• The camera continues to impress. Detail, saturation, white balance, speed of capture etc... all are impressive and effortlessly achieved. Dark setting performance is great as well. Did a lot of shooting by candlelight at the wedding without having to use a flash. Some photos from the trip.. no filters:

Louis Armstrong Park
Street Corner

Skyline At Midnight (we all commented that it was perceptibly brighter than by the naked eye)

Dimly lit Wedding Cake

• Phone format

Extremely well built. Love the dimensions of the phone/case. Still going no-case.

• Some negatives
- When you switch into panoramic mode, the awesome low light performance disappears.

- Finger scanner is definitely susceptible to dirt, dust, sweat, etc. In muggy climates like south florida / new orleans, you must wipe it down periodically.

- Some apps (facebook, dropbox) don't seem to have full access to photo roll.... but only recent photos and albums. A new update (8.0.2) looks like it may have fixed that but not sure.

• ESPN Sportsline app crashes pretty regularly (20% of the time?). Seems to be an ESPN issue as the app isn't optimized for iOS8 yet.

• I'm a power user so perhaps the exception, but I'd be okay with the phone being 1-2mm thicker if they could shoehorn double the battery in there.

That's about it right now, I think. Overall I am extremely impressed/pleased.

DATA USE ON VERIZON?

I am curious about my data useage on Verizon though. I downloaded the DataMan app that tracks your wireless and wifi/networked data use. As of right now it shows me as using 1.76GB of my 2GB data allowance already this month (7.84GB on wifi). However when I call #data, verizon sends me a text that shows my approx data use as 0.89GB so far.

Any thoughts/ideas as to what's going on here?

None of my after-market car or home chargers are working with my 6. Only my OEM cords. Did something change? Chargers still work fine for my old 5.

Going to put my iPhone 5 (32 gb, black, Sprint) on eBay/craigslist. In excellent condition (always kept in a case), and I'll throw in the leather wallet case that I've kept it in ($49 case originally). Also have the exact same model in white, in excellent condition as well (wifey's).

Someone in this thread mentioned they were interested before the 6's came out but I'm too lazy to go back through the thread.

All my old chargers are working fine. Odd.

Are your chargers certified?
You mean made in Chinese sweatshops and sold for a few bucks on eBay? Yes.
And I always got the "This accessory may not be supported message" on my 5's, but they would still ultimately work anyway. Now, I get the message, and they don't work on the 6.

FYI, I just ordered the 6 on SAT w/ ATT and they offered $200 for my 4.

Question for people who buy these expensive cases... what do you do with them when you upgrade phones? Toss them?

My son has an Otterbox but it's kind of a pain to use, because his iPhone 4 home button is unresponsive through the case. If anyone has a better option gathering dust, let me know.

Thanks. I checked craigstlist and eBay a couple weeks ago and it looked like $300 was the going price for 5's in great shape, so I am going to put them on there for that price, but would cut anyone here a deal since it would be less hassle and no fees.

i thought you bought the 6+, not the 6...was I incorrect, or did you make a switch?

Then it's likely you bought uncertified cables then. I wish it wasnt the case, but Apple are pretty much nazis about their cables... With lightning they introduced "MFI aka Made for I" Certified cables that include a small chip. For a while the cheap ones worked, but with one iOS update (not sure which one) all the cheapo knockoffs stopped working.

The amazon basics MFI certified cables are damn nice quality. Thick and durable. Not cheap at $15 shipped via prime, but I can vouch they are very well made.

I was pretty much sold on the 6+ but after factoring in one handed use, I opted to just stick with the 6. I'm quite happy with that, as I'm fairly certain the 6+ would be too big for my purposes. This 6 is at right about at the limits of my ability to comfortably use it with one hand while walking or carrying something.

Don't lie. Fall's here, and it's skinny jean season.

While I think old man "baggy" jeans are pretty offensive in their own right, there are few things that have me completely write off an individual like a man of drinking age wearing skinny jeans.

i was messing around with the 6 yesterday at my friend's house and it was "just right" for one handed use. I'm not sure about the + now.

PM me your email adddress and I'll send you the pics I was going to put on eBay.

If it's still in decent shape, you could sell on eBay or one of the Facebook "for sale" groups. I've seen a good number of used Otterbox and Lifeproof cases on the local FB groups I'm a member of, and usually they sell pretty quickly from what I've seen.

Got my 6+ and love it so far. The size is perfect. I may not need my iPad any longer...

The display is much improved over my iphone5. Aside from AT&T taking two hrs to activate my phone, the cutover process was flawless.

Time will tell once the honeymoon phase winds down, but so far

I'm still torn on this as well.

My wife thinks even the regular 6 is too big (shutup) and wants the 5S. Not sure if that's the best idea. Both of us are upgrading from 4S.

It took me about ten minutes to get used to the plus. I love the size. I've got both right now in 128gb, trying out both. The 4.7 feels just like the 5. I like the bigger one and am going to sell the 6 I think.

When I first opened it I thought oh crap this thing is huge. Didn't take long to adapt. My typos are few and far between on this thing. Keyboard spacing is so much better.

But you really do need two hands to navigate the real estate, no?

i was never much of a one handed user to begin with, but I've reached to see what I can't get to with one hand. So far only thing I can't get is swiping back with my right thumb on Safari or reach the top 1/4" of the screen.

Buddy at work has the 6+, I have the 6. I've played with his quite a bit, and while the extra RE is nice, I'm very happy I went with the 6 as my everyday phone. Zero regrets and would not trade him straight up.

I got my Incipio Stowaway case today. It does fit three cards comfortably. Adding something else in there with three in there is a no go. Cash will have to go into a pocket in the future. Cards will have to be placed in the car (gas cards) or remain at home. Will take some time to get used to.

It feels naked without a screen protector so I will be looking for one of those. The case adds very little to the depth and overall feel of the phone. It does give a nice feel to it though, not slippery (bare phone is slippery) and does feel more secure with it on. Happy I did not go with a wallet case. Not sure what the Otterbox would be like but I'm good for now.

I'm confused - isn't the stowaway case a wallet case?

Not exactly. Wallet case opens like a wallet. Stowaway has a small compartment that can be used as a wallet replacement.

Battery is so much better on the 6+. I've put moderate use on it since 4:30 this morning and still have 64% as I type.

Whoever was bending their phones in their pockets must've been doing squats in the skinny jeans. The phone fit easily into my pocket of my khakis and khaki shorts. There's no way Its bending in my pocket like this.

this is the first day i wore jeans and it fit fine in my front pocket which is where i always carry it. My jeans aren't baggy and the pockets are normal sized. it never felt stressed or at risk of being bent at all.

Stu's right, Gunz. It can hold three cards behind it but nothing protects the front like a wallet case (flap over the front). It works great however it does take some getting used to. I left my wallet home today, I didn't go to any stores today, but I didn't need anything in my wallet for the day. I did grab some cash that I put in my bag but that would have been the only reason to go into my wallet had I had it.

I guess it takes getting used to because you realize how much you actually use your wallet each day... which isn't much.

Still loving my six There are definitely times when I think it would be pretty cool to have the bigger version. But 90% of the time when carrying it in my pocket or using it one-handed like right now, I'm glad I got this size.

Just fired up my old five to wipe it clean and prep for returning it, wow it's crazy going back to that phone after using the six for two weeks.

Another unspoken new feature for the six, is the mayor instantaneous feedback from Siri . Seemingly much more accurate, definitely much much much quicker response.

I noticed this too, much improved.

For those that are looking for a smart watch with more full functions that also does or will do most all Ios notifiations.

Basis 2 is announced.

http://recode.net/2014/09/30/intels-basis-takes-second-stab-at-health-watch-with-peak/

Will track HRM during exercise and 4 day battery life. Seems to support most basic notifications (text/email/stocks) with actually useful fitness tracking.

I'm nearly certainly going to get one.
That's not bad, but at $200 it's starting to get comparatively close to iWatch territory when you start doing a side by side comparison.

i guarantee you would not be carrying the + in your pocket wishing it was smaller, you'd adapt quickly

I think what we are seeing in the plus or not debate is what i expected....whichever phone a user gets is so nice they decide it is the perfect phone for them. I love my plus but had i gotten a 6 I am sure i would love it so much I'd be happy that i did not get the cumbersome plus. But since i got the plus I instead am so glad i have the real estate. The truth is i was going to love either one.

That's not a bad thing, the goal is to be happy with whatever you have and that is what we are seeing, so it is win win

I dunno.. I use my phone one handed a lot (driving, walking around town w/ coffee in hand, etc). That's simply not possible with the 6+. The way I see it... 80-90% of the time, the 6 is the better phone for me... 10-20% of the time, the 6+ is the better phone for me.

The performance boost of the 6 over the 6+ (due to the downsampling the processor is forced to to do to render the screen) is also a nice perk. However the battery life benefits of the 6+ have finally been quantified and are substantial.

Exactly. I've yet to hear from anyone who got the 6+ and are now unhappy with the size. Of course, part of that is because they were already reasonable confident it would work for them before deciding on it.

I think you might be underestimating the amount of stuff you could do one-handed on the bigger phone. Using my Note, it's very rare that I can't do something one-handed, especially things that I'd normally be doing while walking or driving. Of course, you might use your phone significantly differently, so I could be wrong.
