The Apple iPhone Thread (3 Viewers)

Wife has a 5c, I have an Android. We'll both be getting new phones this fall. The question is, was there enough there to make me spend the extra $100 for a 6s?
You wonder if the 6s is going to cause the price for the 6 and 6 plus to go down a bit.

$100
That is with a 2 year contract, wonder what your monthly payment for the phone will be.
Probably around $22 or so
So, you are paying $630. A little savings from before.
I'd just pay for the whole thing up front. Getting a plain 6 would be $100 cheaper across all price points than the S versions. Force touch is cool and all but the only things that would really swing me towards the S would be better battery life and the 12 MP camera.

You are correct. If you paid up front, you might even get some more savings.

The way the software is growing, the processor might be the only other thing that would make it somewhat worth it. I'm not sold on upgrading my 6+ to iOS9 when it comes out.

I remember the days where a keynote would yield 20+ pages

Anyway, Im kind of with Foos. I have a note 3. Loved it when I had kit kat. Lolipop has made it meh for me and I dont love the note 5. Thinking of coming back to ios. But there is no way Im paying the full price or some monthly plan. I want it subsidized. If not, Ill go note 5

Any ios guys use google apps a lot on their iphones.

When I had the iphone 4, it would work, but not as flawless as on my note. Has this gotten any better. I use Google apps A LOT

Yes. I think the entire suite of Google apps works wonderfully in iOS. Heavy user of GMAIL and Drive primarily.

Little known fact, if you currently have Verizon and a contract, you can still keep your contract. So you would pay the subsidized price for your phone.

I use Chrome and Gmail and they work perfectly on my 6+, there is no lag and have not experienced any issues.

awesome, I was talking mostly with Google docs, sheets and slides. It worked ok on my iphone 4, but wouldnt always synch when I needed it to and just seemed slow on the iphone

Depending on the plan, subsidies aren't that great. I have AT&T (work pays for mine and have 3 other lines) and I do the next plan (full price/20 months, no interest) and they give you a $25 per month credit per line that you don't get with the subsidy so it actually was cheaper doing the next plan.

At that price point, the stylus:pencil should be included.

For all the "jobs said stylus is a failure" crowd, I agree 100% when talking about UI. This isn't designed for that. The stylus (and to some extent, the iPad Pro itself) is aimed squarely at the creative market to replace products like the Adonit Jot Touch. The pixel precision accuracy of the stylus would be handy as hell for artists/illustrators/designers/architects/etc.

I could see these being huge in the medical field. A buddy who's family owns 3 pediatric clinics was searching for exactly this and WANTED to use iPads last year but they were just too small. They ended up with 13" Lenovo tablet/laptop hybrids for their staff. He commented after the launch that they would likely be moving to these after next upgrade cycle in 2-3 years. I suspect that's going to be somewhat commonplace.

I think this is one case where the "pro" is not just a moniker. I think this is intended to be somewhat of a niche/cache product Primarily designed for the professional market, and is priced accordingly.

Agreed, b/c i think a different type of input device besides your finger kind of goes hand in hand with this sized tablet.

I'm diggin this...like really. But as a designer, I can't justify it until it can run full versions of Adobe design applications like inDesign and Illustrator.

I already use a wacom pen tablet in place of a mouse on my desktop computer, and I'm really waiting for the ability to be able to design full layouts right on my screen.

Wacom already has this baby, but I'm waiting to have an extra $3k laying around to pick one up.

Once iPad-type prices and design desktop power start merging, I'll have a tough time not jumping at it.

Pencil Side note: I love apple, but its getting hard to defend that they don't rip people off...Adobe has had their iPad stylus called "Ink and Slide" out for a while now.

"Why not just get a laptop" side note: people who say this (no offense) just don't get the tablet experience benefits. Touch screen, single body, no opening and closing an awkward "L" shaped device, no trying to find a desk or table to put it on when typing. there is a certain integrated feeling with your body when you use a tablet. you can hold it in one arm and type with another, you can sit back on a recliner and watch a show or read something, or you can place it on a table and type away. Laptops are great for portability, but clunky for anything other then table or desktop use.

I have AT&T. I would much rather pay my plan + $299 for an iphone 6+s than 699 and still paying for the same plan.

Just need to make sure that I am still going to get grandfathered into unlimited

Ok. Feel free to report back. When the 6/6+ came out the plans weren't the same. I and a few guys in here looked into the options. For me, it meant I pay a net $15 per month for the 128gb 6+ whicg is less than the $499 subsidy. The 6 I got for my wife was I think a little less than the $25 per month you had to pay for staying on the 2 year contracts.

Any good deals on the 6/6+ out there? How has the 6+ worked for you guys wearing jeans and dress pants, is front pocket possible?

Thinking about ordering as I dropped my 5 in the river a few weeks ago and charging and down volume control are wacked but charging is getting better, had been only working with one certain charger.

Probably will just get the new one although not seeing much improve over a cheaper 6.

You can still keep your grandfathered unlimited.

I pre-ordered a 64MB 6S+ yesterday on the AT&T site. It's the bottom option. They really try and push you to the NEXT pricing, which I believe switches your plan off unlimited. For me, the last option was "2-year contract," and it kept everything else the same.

I'm looking to upgrade my iphone 5. Can't decide if I should just get the 6 ($550) or the 6s ($750). $200 worth the upgrades? I'm leaning no, but wondering what others think.

My take on how important (1-10) each feature is on what would be my decision to go 6s over 6:

Faster A9 Processor: 5 - faster is always better. The 6 is a very fast phone, but future apps may make use of the horsepower.

12 Megapixel Camera - 7 - The existing camera on the 6 is VERY good... but as a photo junkie, this is a decently important upgrade for me.

7000 series aluminum shell - 2 - I'm not worried about bending my phone. If going with larger 6+, maybe more of a concern?
3D Force Touch - 9 - To me this is the main reason to upgrade. Functionality looked very useful and the type of thing that will be tightly interwoven into apps/OS going forward
Improved TouchID - 5 - Touch ID already works pretty damn well... but I do use it a lot so improvements are good, if not particularly necessary.

I think of these things... the 3D force touch would be the most likely to be "missed" down the road by anyone chosing the 6/6+ right now.

I was only seeing the $100 price difference. Where did you see $200?

[icon]'s list is good...I always look at it as being worth it. Especially if you wait 2 years between upgrades. I know that by the time I get to the end of my 2 years with any iPhone, it's usually starting to get slower and slower as technology catches up to hardware. I would be fine with a 6 right now...but in 2 years, when there's about to be a 7S, I'd feel pretty behind the times still toting a 6.

I have to buy using AT&T Next.

Was looking at the 64GB versions of each. When you calculate the monthly cost * # of months, I got $550 vs $750.

EDIT: I see $650 for Iphone 6 64GB at Apple now so maybe my numbers were wrong. I'll double check.

EDIT again: Not sure what happened, but now I'm seeing $650 for the 6. Maybe I accidentally was looking at the 16GB version of the 6 before.

So, $100 difference makes the decision a bit easier. Still feels crazy to shell out $750 for a phone.

Two friends and I have given up on TouchID completely. And, yes, we've tried re-doing the print and putting in multiples. So, for me, this would be a big selling point.

I saw a report yesterday while researching that said the new phones will have 2GB of RAM compared to 1GB in all earlier phones. That seems like a big upgrade as well.

That's odd. I actually have odd fingerprints that are very tough to scan (was once booked by Memphis PD and they could not get a clean scan of multiple prints and finally gave up).... yet Touch ID works almost without exception for me.

Maybe it's a girl thing. :) Seriously, I don't know the science behind it, but I assume there could be some "biological variation", i.e. how much heat in your fingertips.

RAM is one I missed.. good catch.

Right now, it's NOT as much of an issue because of how iOS is designed (and how the ecosystem somewhat forces apps to be very efficient)... however it almost certainly will be a bottleneck in the future. RAM handling on iOS vs Android is a very apples/oranges scenario, however. It's very possible for a 1GB iOS device to perform as well as or better than a 2GB Android device, for example.

Regardless... it sounds like you made the right choice, IMO. I think you'll be extremely happy with the 6s. The 6 really are awesome devices and I have no doubt the 6s will be even cooler with the improvements.

I have some problems, but I think it has more to do with the case (Otterbox) not giving good contact between the finger and the sensor.

If you buy/rent via AT&T Next, are there statement credits? I'm hearing there are statement credits.
On my family plan a line is $15 (40-$25 credit) if I don't do the subsidized phone, $40 if I do buy a subsidized phone and 2 year contract.
Interesting. So the Next plan works out better? My wife and I are both up for new phones and I just assumed the Next thing was a way to screw you.

Yes it does vs getting the subsidized phone. I'm not sure individual plans work that way, but the family plan where you all share data and just add lines to it does. The next is 0% interest also. Not a bad plan for some people. I have seen some comparisons of the new Apple plan vs carrier's next type plans in the last couple days describing which is best for which type of person.

Why would I need more than 16 GB? I have a macbook and mini mac at home so I assume all pictures would immediately transfer to the other machines. How fast does video recording chew up 16 GB. I won't be using it for music as I like my Sony Walkman. Really wouldn't be buying the damn thing except I want to get away from a hand held calendar and mileage log.

Even with cloud storage, most images/files are also stored or cached locally.

16GB phone = OS + about 12GB of free space.

On my phone I have 5.3GB of Messages (SMS/MMS) and 12.5GB of Photos & Videos, though I'm likely excessive.

Many Apps are 500MG-1GB.... most are at least 100MG.

I have zero downloaded songs, but Spotify takes up about 4GB due to offline playlists.

Unless you a a VERY light user who has no intent on storing content (photo/music/video) on your phone, then a 16GB phone is simply way too small.

If I do the option with the credits, I don't get to keep the phone when I get a new one, right?
There is an option to trade it in at either 12 or 18 months and get a new model or keep it the whole 24 or 30 months and you own it.

I agree with this. I got a 6 plus 16gb thinking I would take advantage of onedrive and the like and not need more than 16gb. It was possible, but took a lot of monitoring, uploading (automatic but it does require remembering to open the app), and deleting. Didn't take long til I went with 64gb.

A related note, I feel pretty good about the space gray 128gb 6 plus I got for my girlfriend today for $400...

Improved camera (12 vs 8 megapixels ) immediately eats up 1.5 x the amount of storage space per picture. Honestly shocked that the 16 gig version is even an option anymore. Plus with "live photo", photos are taken on either side of the actual photo, so each time you take a pic, it's actually taking at least 3 pictures and storing them internally. So now you are looking at each picture on a 6s taking up 4.5x the amount of space of one pic on a 6.

Storage space is going to get eaten up quickly on a 16GB phone.
