The Apple iPhone Thread (1 Viewer)

I have a 256GB iPhone X

i have 12,300 photos, 593 videos, 236 apps, and I have 186 of 256GB still available... but that means I am using 70GB so the 64GB would not work.

With the 256 I never ever ever ever have to worry about space and the hassles of deleting crap to make room.

My wife decides she wants a ####### iphone after 5 years of android.  For no real reason other than she misses out on some of the group text features in imessage.  She gets it and starts configuring it and immediately regrets the decision.  I haven't used an iphone in ages. It's absolutely astounding how little progress their UI has made in what must be a decade.  You still have literally no way to get a embedded calendar/mail/text notification on a page in 2018!  The pull down notification bar is a ####### abortion.
Returned it.  Lol.

So my boys want to move over to iOS after having Androids for a few years. iPhone 7 refurbished is about on the price range I would spend on a phone for them. I can't find any good sources online to confirm, but is it safe to assume Apple will continue to push iOS upgrades to the 7 for a couple more years?

batteries +bulbs will
For $29, though? Their site shows $69 for a Rayovac. I think I can get $10 off of that booking the appointment online but that's still $59. Is that something where they'll do it for $29 on a price match or something?

I considered B+B previously but ended up taking it into an actual cell phone repair shop near me that gets good reviews. I was out running errands near there and stopped in to see if they could slap a new one in quick while I was out and about. Convenience, right? Long story shortened, that was a bad experience as they installed some after-market POS that made me wish I had the old worn-down factory battery back. So my issue is not resolved and now I am a little leery about putting even more $ into an old phone and still not getting the issue remediated. In hindsight, I should have started with Apple but I tried to go a more convenient route and it didn't work out. The phone is in great condition and does everything I need it to. It just goes dead way too fast to trust taking it anywhere without a charger. That's ok on most days when I am close to power but when I am out hunting/fishing/golfing/etc I am SOL. Anyways, if Apple will put a new, quality battery in there for $29, I will probably do that. I think they are offering them at that price as a goodwill gesture, though, against the backlash they got after they made some changes that affected older factory battery life. I don't want to make an appointment to have them do it only for them to say I gotta pay the full price ($79 I think?) because the device no longer has the factory battery, though. I don't know if they would but that's what I am trying to find out. If I can get the battery issue solved for $29, I will probably keep the 6s a little longer. If its going to cost me more than that, I will probably just upgrade the phone at this point.  My work phone is a 7 and I like it. No issues whatsoever. Maybe I'll replace the 6s with a 7 now that they have come down in price. Then again, I know there's really not much difference between those two and the 7 is no spring chicken, either, as tech goes. The newest phones are dazzling but I just don't use enough of the dazzle to justify the cost.

still looking for discarded iphones.....
I still have a 6S 16 GB and a 6 64 GB sitting in my office drawer. Should have sold them a while ago but with 3 boys 11-17, they are just emergency replacements. I sold a 6 64 GB earlier in this thread.

On the battery side, I’ve got a reminder to replace my wife’s 7+ before the end of the year when the $29 offer is gone. Might replace any other phone where the battery life isn’t perfect. Too many phones and I have no desire to upgrade. I miss the 2 year contract extension. I started on iPhone 3gs and upgraded quite a few times for $99 or $199. Ah, the glory days.

Tons of life left in the 7. They’re only 2 years old.

Just bought an iphone X for my son...16th birthday gift.  He has the nicest phone in the house now.  I am still rocking the 6, wife has a 7.  I think the Xr is due out in a week...probably should have waited.  Would have saved $150.

Why do this to them?  Look out for their future pocketbooks and long-term happiness...keep them on Android.

It may feel good now to see them dating the hot new thing, but that good looking thing will eventually show it's true colors, frustrate them, break their hearts, and leave them in financial distress.

Don't do it.

My company requires I use a phone from them.. iphone 8.  I still have OnePlus3.  A low end android couple few years years old.  Carry both daily.

Both are fine for what I need I guess, but the lack of change/improvement to keep up with the android os is really odd.

The Xr is slightly larger then the X.  My son did not want the larger size.  I told him he would regret that one day.  Hi s reaction...

Despite the problems with our XS Max and XS, my wife is leaning heavily towards a MacBook Pro for a new laptop. I can't blame her, our current laptop we've had for 4 years is a PITA and Windows 10 is really annoying. Looks like Apple's next announcement will be on the 30th so I have talked her into waiting until then to see what changes Apple makes to the Macbook Air and others.

Anyone that switched from Windows to Mac have any tips or feedback to share? I searched the thread but the comments are all from 2~3 plus years ago if not more.

Picked up the XS last week. Huge upgrade from my old 6. Haven't had any issue with it thus far. Need to look into what tricks this thing will do that my 6 wouldn't do.

upgrading from the 7 to the XR I think...the aluminum vs steel is worrisome as these things seemingly have become durable enough to go no case or very minimal case on them at all baring major drops.

Any experience with super thin case/skins and protection?

Love the rhinoshield for my iphone 7.  Pretty thin still for a very protective case...but want something a bit thinner I guess.  And frankly the colors of the rhinoshield for the XR are weak (and think clear would just show any dirt/dust that creeps into the case)

I have had a Speck case on my iphone 6 for 3 years.  It has been fantastic and was dirt cheap.  I think it's size is very similar to the rhinoshield though.  I have no idea what their cases for the XR are like, but my experience with the 6 case has far exceeded my expectations.

That is what my wife uses and she will probably get one for her XR.  Rhino shield is a bit thinner (not much).  Im looking even thinner though.  Speck are great and protective though...she has put them through some drops.

Thanks

I’ve liked my Tech21 cases which are minimal and give a bit of a tactile feel vs. hard plastic.

Is the 7 too old to buy? The 8?

I have to get a new work phone. The 32GB 7 is free, the 64GB 8 is $150 and the 64GB XR is $300. I need to pick one of those.

Updating on the XS Max and XS, about two weeks ago after many phone calls to both companies, they set me an apt to take both phones to an Apple store and they replaced them. Still a few connection issues every once in a while on the XS Max but both new ones are working much, much better.

My wife loves her new MacBook, I have yet to have a chance to play with it.

My wife is using her 7 just fine.  From what I have read, the 7 was getting better reviews than the 8.  The XR was just released.  How are you getting these prices?  Discount through work?  The XR is a $750 phone.

It's a discount through work since they make us have a phone. I went with the 7. No sense in paying for it with it being a secondary phone.

Got the work iPhone and went to sign in with my old Apple ID and password which I haven't used in a couple years and it won't give me access. Says it sent a message to to my trusted device and shows the last 2 digits as 99. I've never had a number that ends in 99. A quick search leads me to believe my Apple ID is lost forever.

I am on my third X since July.  All returned at the Apple store.  Some of the issues are finally gone but not all.  The phone still does not always alert me (no sound) when a text comes through.  Constant reboots are necessary due to various issues that I won't bore you with, but suffice is to say, a brand new $1000 phone should not have bugs like this.

I have asked Apple for a different phone but they still won't do it.  Partly because I got the phone from AT&T, I assume, but Apple has all but admitted these issues are the phone, not AT&T.  I mean why would they keep switching them out?  I even told them I would pay the difference for an Xs but they won't allow it.  I told them I'd go back to an earlier model -- I don't care, I just want a properly functioning phone -- but they won't do that either.

Most companies -- even total crap ones like airlines -- would have made this right by now, with vouchers or other appeasement, to just make me happy and send me on my way.  But not Apple, they are tight as a drum.  I have been dealing with store supervisors, btw, not the reps.  It's a joke how tight and by-the-book they are.

This is a much different Apple CS than a couple of years ago.

This may be related to an issue that literally has just surfaced in the last day or so. https://www.digitaltrends.com/apple/locked-apple-id-news/ Weird coincidence that you just were getting back into an Apple product. I doubt your Apple ID is lost forever. Surely there’s a way.

Have not really followed the iPhone upgrades for a while. Been using an 6S Plus since they are out. Time to upgrade, so anything I should know?

I like my screen size and want to keep it close.

Don't do much on it besides work emails (i like the larger screen b/c I look at layout/design PDFs a lot), occasional games but nothing resource hogging.

Camera is important b/c i do shoot photos for work purposes—not final but good enough for placement—and it has really become my main family camera. Same for Video, I want to go live and do short form video more and so good capabilities with that.

.....oh, and solitaire. gotta have something to do on the crapper

I'm kinda thinking that any model is good for most of this, just don't know the specifics between them.

i am usually the last in my family to upgrade (two teenage daughters and a wife who is hard on her phone), but i upgraded from a 6 to the XR and boy, am I loving it.

It is bigger, no doubt, but as (ahem) an older guy, I appreciate the bigger font and screen. It takes a little to get used to the no home button coming from an Iphone 6, but I love it. The XR is cheaper than the XS and it just feels right. Good battery life. Beautiful pictures. I am really happy (so far) with this phone.

My family is an Otterbox family. My Defender served me very well on my Iphone 6 for over 4 years and still looked good. So I was looking for a case that really showed off my red XR and I bought the Otterbox Pursuit (clear). for $79.99. What a worthless piece of junk that case was. I installed it on a Saturday and put my phone in my front pocket of my hooded sweatshirt and when I got to the restaurant, I already noticed small scratches on it.  All through the week, I would put it in my suit pocket and then on the counter at night to charge and it looked like a case I had for years. The entire back was beyond scratched and actually looked like it was worn down or aged. When I checked the reviews on it, sure enough, I wasn't the only one having this same problem. Avoid at all costs. I brought it back to BB and bought the Otterbox Symmetry in black with the red buttons -(along with a tempered glass protector) and this is a very nice, lightweight case that was only $49.99.

Been 2 weeks with the xs now...in a spited hybrid case (black edges woth clear back) Thin but protective and looks great.

Love the phone, zero issues so far.  Wife loves her XR too once she got used to the difference in size (she was on an SE before that).

ATT has been so much better than that crap ads sprint.  We had dealt with sprint for years since we had such a cheap unlimited plan for so long.  But there were areas around town where data just was slow or nonexistent.  One was at my sons school.  Thought it was due to the number of people on phones (madness that was part of it for Sprint...ok signal that would basically drop to nothing when school lets out...2300 high school students +staff).  ATT has moved right along smooth even there.

And their customer service thus far has been way better than Sprints BS too.

I have had exactly the opposite experience at my local Apple store.. sounds like a regional issue you’re experiencing.

I just don’t think Apple is for you, it seems you’re always unhappy/complaining. Not saying you’re not havjng issues, just saying you should probably switch platforms.

When I was having problems with our XS & Xs Max the customer service was horrendous the first few tech people we dealt with on the phone. Similar terrible service when we took the phones in to the Apple store in Colorado Springs and one of the flagship stores in a high-end mall here in Denver (both of these stores were super-busy/swamped too.) Finally got an extremely helpful rep on the phone after a bunch of tries who set us up with an appointment at a less busy store on the southwest side of Denver. The guy there was awesome, replaced the lemon phones straight away, I was in and out in no time, great experience that particular time.

That doesn't sound like a great experience. 2 lemons, several bad CS on phone, bad CS in a store, then a phone CS and store did what they should have done in the first place?

No it sucked, thought I would provide a counterpoint to Icon's constant cheerleading. That one time they did what they should have (or used to do all the time) was great, and almost made up for the wasted hours prior to that. Almost...

Great insight.

I'm rocking the iPhone 6 and the phone is fine but the lightening port, where the phone charges, is either dirty, getting broken, or wearing down, because lightening cords pull out very easily, or pull out when the phone is barely moved. The new iPhones are too expensive nor do I want a new phone with this one working just fine. If I were to buy a new phone, I've been looking at the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact but no stores have one to test out. Plus, it's a Google phone and I am not in that ecosystem so there is that.

Any experiences with a loosening lightening port and/or how was it dealt with?

Pocket lint in the port— seriously. Get a paper clip and clean it out.    ETA:  That is what they did when I took my phone in due to the wire not staying in or charging.

Had the same problem with mine. Took it to the Apple store and they cleaned the port out. They said it happens to a lot of men’s phones because they keep it in their pocket.

Looks like Verizon has the X for $400 off today, so $20+ a month for 24 months. I think I'll be picking that up for my daughter.
Effing Verizon bait and switch. None in stock and can't order. Another store says mid January. Went to Best Buy and got the XR for $100 off. So $750 for $650 instead of $900 for $500. Happy kid though so I guess that's all that matters but still irritating.

Drives me freaking crazy, and it hasn't been dealt with in any satisfying manner.  I hate it when I think my phone is plugged in charging overnight only to find it did not stay when I wake up in the AM.  If I try to use my car charger, the slightest movement seems to knock out of charging mode.  Most cords I can not get to work at all no matter how much I jiggle and wiggle them.  It is not a cleaning issue.  I have cleaned the port...I have had apple clean the port.  The problem still persists.  Other than this, the phone works perfectly fine.  This is a real pain in the ###.  If you find a solution, please share.
