The Avengers (1 Viewer)

Just got back. Blown the #### away. The first perfect comic book film. Give Whedon an unlimited budget and get out his way. Make sure you stay for the not one but, two extra scenes.

just got back from the midnight premiere, this was a VERY GOOD comic book movie. not on the level of Dark Knight for me, but to do team movie and have it go so smoothly is a BIG challenge.

Marvel finally got the Hulk right. Ruffalo does a great job portraying the inner turmoil that Bruce Banner deals with on a daily basis. Great acting all the way around by the entire cast.

The mid credit scene at the end is INCREDIBLE. Has me drooling for Avengers 2....and should have my Iron Man 55 going up in price. :moneybag:

It was a fun movie but suffered from a lot of the same issues as the Transformers movies. A great super hero movie needs an equally charismatic villain. Loki had his moments but, in the end, most of the fighting was against the mostly faceless, certainly personality-less alien reptile machines. And they're fighting over an energy source, just like in Transformers. The difference here is they were able to sprinkle some amusing moments into the long battle. So fun all around but not a great movie.

I liked the second scene after credit even more.

Now I have to make an effort to go this weekend between soccer game, gymnastics, birthday parties, date night with my wife to men of Chelsea Handler and mowing the lawn with my new mower

And yes, I know which one can be cut out but thats not possible right now

I may be the biggest Whedon fan boy on this site and good lord am I looking forward to this tonight. My family is going at 7:00pm tonight. Tried to get daughter to go in a full black widow outfit but she was having none of it :)Thanks for the tip about the two scenes! I would have stayed until the end no matter what though. Family is trained to do that now for most movies.

Holy smokes. After 65,000 votes, IMDB users are rating this out at an 8.8 average which is going to put it in top 15 movie of all time, if it holds through the weekend. It is ranked 31 now but that is due to a relative low number of votes so far.

To give a feel for just how high an 8.8 is on IMDB, just below Avengers at an 8.7 is Fellowship of the Ring, Star Wars (A New Hope), Goodfellas, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Casablanca.

Two scenes? Damn.My review: I hadn't had that much fun in a theater since I got a hand job during a viewing of Robin Hood back in '91.

Great...now I'll have Lucy giving Charlie Brown a hand job in my head the rest of the day. <_<

This movie has Whedon written all over it. Great dialogue, pacing, and he know what the hell the heroes are known for and lets them go all out. Every single person nails it. Ruffalo played Banner perfectly. Hulk steals the movie. Scarlett Johannson is hotter than ever. I thought the weak links would have been Renner and the chick from How I Met Your Mother but even they suprised me. Great set up for the sequel.

About the second scene:
if you don't want to be spoiled about the second scene don't click the next link:

The 6 heroes are at the local "Schwarma" Deli that Tony Start mentioned and they are just there eating. It was really funny and tongue in cheek.

From what I've seen in the previews, Scarlett Johannson's ### in the Black Widow suit should be nominated for an Oscar. Agree?

YES. In a word...PERFECT.

Best Hulk Scenes:

When he catches the pilot trying to eject and just flings him.

Fight with Thor.

When he teams up with Thor, but then in the end punches him anyway.

When he changes right as the transport is reaching him and pummels it to pieces.

I could go on and on.

HULK SMASH!!!!!!!!!!

His "fight" with Loki resulted in nearly a full minute of applause/laughter in my theater. So great.

As mentioned in an earlier post, Acura sponsored a sneak preview at 7 PM last night and I attended that showing along with my wife and daughter. It was kind of funny to see the midnight show people just starting to arrive/line up as we were all leaving saying "Wasn't Avengers great!!" They're like

As context, I am 40+ and read comics (almost exclusively Marvel) throughout my tweens/teens/college. I basically stopped buying/reading new comics after college, but would pick up the occasional graphic novel of newer story lines here and there. My daughter is a total comic book/star wars/star trek/LOTR :nerd: ....Daddy's so proud! My wife could care less about comics and really isn't even much of a movie going person.

And the point is.....we ALL loved it. Something for everyone in this flick - whether you've read the comics or not.

In addition to what other reviewers have already said above, here are some additional inputs from my perspective:

- It started a little slow for me...then picked up quickly with the first Iron Man scene and never let up from there.

- The humor/banter of the characters was awesome - the best of any Marvel flick thus far. On at least two occasions, the audience was laughing so hard that we couldn't hear the next line of dialogue. Really funny stuff. There is one humorous Hulk scene near the end that was the highlight of the entire movie for me. All three of us were just :lmao:

- A comment on the 3D version: I have only ever seen one modern movie in 3D and that was Avatar - due to all of the hype. My daughter and I didn't care for the 3D effect in that movie at all. It didn't add any value for me, and it actually was a little disorienting for my daughter. We have consciously avoided 3D versions ever since. Given that this was a FREE sneak preview, we had no choice but to see what was being offered - which was the 3D version. In a nutshell, it still didn't add any value for me, but at least my daughter didn't have any issues this time. Given the option, I would have opted for the 2D version.

To bottom line it then: I'd definitely recommend it and I'd put it right up with my very favorite Marvel movies to date: Iron Man 1 and Spider Man 1.

I have read in several reviews to just go with the 2D option.

Really, really good. Almsot, but not great for me. As mentioned loki was a bit of a disapoinment..I thouhgt the 3d was good. To me the less of all that 'Look out there's another something or another flying at you' detracts from the 3d. I think the overall depth it brings to the cinematography (like Avatar) actually helps. The dialoge was really very good and maybe the best part of the movie. I don't care much for SLJ as an actor. I think he's an overactor on the larget of scales, but i think made a great Nick Fury. his back and forht with his bosses was kinda puzzling, but not a detractor. I'm sure i'll catch holy hell for this on this board, but I thought Scarlett Johannson seemed kinda chunky in her opening scene. Better when she was in the black widowsuit, but I wondered if they'd filmed her 1st scene earlier or later than the rest and she'd hit the buffet line before filming.

Speaking of Black Widow, why in the name of all things super hero did they give her little toy cap guns to shoot at aliens with? Tony freaking Stark couldn't give her a stinking wiz bank ray gun or something?

A solid 4.4 out of 5

It was a fun movie but suffered from a lot of the same issues as the Transformers movies. A great super hero movie needs an equally charismatic villain. Saw it this afternoon, tons of fun. Everything I wanted out of the movie... I actually teared up from pure joy a couple times. Just couldn't believe I was actually watching what I was watching.

When Cap goes through the team and gives each of them their directives, and then wraps it up with, "And... Hulk, SMASH!" I about lost it. :excited: +

Do I need to see the previous avenger installments to understand what's going on? I've only seen the iron man movies.

I don't think you NEED to, they explain everything pretty well – It's tough because the villain is from Thor's movie and his weapon is from Captain America's movie so they're definitely worth watching. You just don't HAVE to see them to make sense of everything I don't think.

I only see it available in IMAX 3D around here. No regular IMAX. So should I see it in:

Real3D

IMAX 3D

Digital 2D?

I don't read any avenger comics-you don't need the previous story lines.

It helps, Movie is still awesome. IMAX 3d is great-wasn't over done.

Doesn't matter what your expectations are -they will be exceeded.

I can't comment on IMAX, but Real 3D was a total meh for me.

Kinda knew this going in, but the whole aliens taking over the earth angle is kinda lame. They could have used a better villain, or perhaps more of them. That said ,they did a good job with it. I still think the Captain America movie was better.

I saw it in IMAX 3D, and I'm not usually a proponent. Worth it. Really great, very entertaining. Cobie Smulders is way way hotter than Johannson.

caught the midnight showing in 3D

agree that the the villian side of the movie needed some work.

Most of the great scenes involved The Hulk.. "puny god" indeed!

Captain America telling Hulk to 'Smash' was great!

gf thought it was great even though she isn't a 'comics' fan

Just got back and really loved it. Whedon's story telling and writing style was all over this.

I have one question that I either missed or was not explained well

How did Stark know that Banner would come back and would have semi control of the Hulk?

If I was to recommend I would say watch Iron Man 1, Thor and then Captain America in that order would be the best way to get the most out of this movie IMO. Watch the after credit scenes of each movie as well.

You've got to be kidding me here...

Second question

who was the villain in the first after credit scene that was used to set up the squeal?

I don't think there is a clear answer to this, at least not directly provided by the movie. Maybe intuition, maybe something he saw looking at tape of the Hulk (Banner seems to infer that Stark thinks Hulk saved his life somehow during his initial gamma exposure), maybe just a leap of faith. Also, Stark seems to just be fascinated by the power and wants to see it close up.

The only extremely marginal thing I could come up with is Banner realized something when the old guy told him he seemed to go out of his way to not hurt anyone when he fell from the ship. I thought maybe it made Banner realize that he could some what control the hulk. I know it is a huge stretch but I can't make any other connection nor can I figure out why the scene with the old guy telling him that was in the movie if not for that marginal connection.
