The Bill Simmons Podcast (2 Viewers)

Craig Kilborn pod is the most bizarre thing ever.

He was either hopped up on cocaine or smoked a ton of weed beforehand.

What a trainwreck

just got through the "opening statement" of the Kilborn pod (actually I'm not sure if it's over or if it goes on for the entire pod).  holy ####, who is this guy?

It was a beautiful pass but not as beautiful as what my older brother wrote about Doctor J or as beautiful as my jump shot versus Idaho State. I really do love passing though, it's the greatest thing of all.  I'll tell you more later, don't want to give it away but I'll share since there are no cameras here, right?  So back to my dinner with Dennis Farina.

If I hadn't been on a plane, I would've turned that Kilborn pod off.  What a wreck.

Did get to hear ole Billy on Howard Stern this morning.  I know Bill thinks Prince knows (knew) who he was, but Stern sure as hell didn't.

Does francesca stream his show? Anyone have a link?

Edit : prly should have looked first. There is a link on WFAN site

Wasn't that Kilborn's schtick?  It was always a "I'm so cool" deal.

When people aren't in on it, it's not going to come off well.  Going to have to listen ...maybe he has just gone off the deep end.

I think he's gone off the deep end. I enjoyed him on SC and starting up the Daily Show but still thought he was unlistenable on the pod.

Mike is determined to prove how much more knowledgable and important he is than Simmons. Poor guy can barely get a word in.

"ya gatta be lucky, ughkay.  i mean, let's be honest, ughkay.  ughkay.  ya gatta be lucky, becaws, folks, sometimes ya just don't know, ughkay?"

That HBO show won't make it to year 3. Who is going to watch that? He couldn't even get ratings on ESPN where he had a huge built-in audience.

I'm curious how "After the Thrones" is doing. The guys are already on Simmons' payroll so the extra costs have to be pretty minimal. But it seems crazy that they're trying to do an aftershow that isn't immediately following the show, and they eventually air it on the east coast at like 1AM a full day later. Maybe they're using it more as a test for the format.

It's cheap content for the streaming service.  My guess is you'll start to see more of that sort of thing (and that's more of an industry point than Simmons'-centric)

Yeah I get that, I would just think one way to actually drive viewers to it would be to flash a card before the "next week" promo saying to tune to HBO2 for "After the Thrones" or "recap is now available on HBO Go/Now" immediately.

Don't think Anything Given Wednesday will last.  Simmons just doesn't come off as that likable on television.  His real value to HBO will be in future development.  He was the brain child behind 30 for 30 and has been pretty consistent in developing new podcast concepts.

I liked a lot of the Grantland writing, and quite a few of the 30-for-30's. I'd say that's more of a strength, for him, than even his written stuff.

The problem with sports opinion writers is that once they make it, I think they end up consuming far less sports. Think Simmons has pretty much stopped writing/talking about baseball that much? What really separates him from Colin Cowherd at this point?

Dunno if it was mentioned here earlier, but he did do a great interview with Lampley a few weeks back.

The Ringer is an aptly named dead ringer for Grantland.  The homepage layout is different thanks to the Medium platform but the mix of sports and pop culture content is familiar.   They couldn't have picked an uglier shade of green for the masthead.  It's early days but the sports articles seem shorter and the pop culture stuff is very mainstream.  I vaguely remember Grantland having a bit more obscure mix but that may just my selective memory again.

I didn't see any footnotes or articles by the founder yet.
