this show just has no energy and I don't feel like it has a great flow.   The interspersed half-monologues/half- video segments with the interview segments just kind of happen.  Compare to bill maher ( which feels formulaic after watching a lot of eps, but still) which has a clear pattern of introducing the show and hit the monologue to connect directly with the audience, then leading the viewer through each segment.   AGW just feels sort of amorphous and low-energy and not an event at all.  Though maybe they are looking more for it to be like clips that are stand-alone pieces, since that is how so much content is consumed nowadays.

He's mentioned several times that they were figuring it out as they went. It seems like shows like this would work better if you are working off a strong initial concept. This concept seems to be "bill simmons on tv."

 
Needs to be a long-form show. Almost a video-version of his podcasts. Chopping down 60-75 minute interviews to 12 minutes just isn't working. Or maybe have the full interviews online to watch/listen to, instead of the pieces of "extra" footage they are posting after the show. 

 
Only saw the first half of the show. 

I found Bosh to be very earnest and likeable - had never seen him interviewed before. Enjoyed the segment but mainly because of Bosh, Bill might as well not have even been there. 

Anyone still watching? 

 
It seemed that Simmons knows about as much as UFC that I do (not much!). Consequently, the last 10 min. with Rogan was effectively an infomercial for UFC 200. 

 
This last podcast with house was abysmal. 45 minutes of House agreeing verbatim with Simmons or House saying "um uh uh uh uh uh uh um hmmm maybe" over and over. 

 
I enjoyed Simmons ripping the Hawks for looking to deal Milsap with three years left on his deal, when a 3 second internet search would have shown that Milsap is going to be a free agent next year.

Sounds like Cowherd's show, but at least they were smart enough to have a hot blonde playing the role of House

the shackhouse pod is awful.  it's supposed to be a golf podcast previewing the week's upcoming tournament.  i'd wager they spend maybe 15 minutes out of an hour discussing actual golf, and 5 of those minutes go to discussing the upcoming tournament.  they also don't really know much about golf, but I don't listen to these for advanced analysis, i just want to hear two average joes talk sports for an hour.  nope.

it is slightly entertaining listening to House repeat the phrase "capital allocation" when referring to his golf bets as he proceeds to lay out the genius parlay where he just bets every top golfer to make the cut (because THIS is the week it finally works out.  the books haven't accounted for the fact that good golfers are good!)

It's terrible.  I tapped out after the first 2. 

And IMO Pat Mayo has surpassed Bill (and his network) on podcast listenability. Pat Mayo = guy you'd like to have a beer with.  Bill = guy you'd liked to punch.

I now hear the phrase "capital allocation" in real life and immediately want to punch the nearest thing.  That damn whiny high pitched voice and aloof disposition just kills me.

Serena Williams hot take at the beginning I hated (even if he's correct) - I don't know why but I don't like when he tries to get political.

Aaron Rodgers interview was pretty decent though to be honest.  Thought he did better than 60 minutes did with it.  And he didn't even mention deflategate.  I do think he missed a chance to be an edgy show by shying away from asking him about his brother on the Bachelorette who apparently dislikes Aaron.  If you're on HBO, want to be edgy, have a podcast on your network dedicate to the Bachelor, you have to bring up his brothers' comments IMO.

Yep. Pat Mayo hour.  Really good and consistent (2 pods a week - one for betting/one for DK) for golf betting (especially knowing it's probably the most popular golf betting pod out there and to fade him because so many folks follow along)

I have yet to find one I where I think the hosts consistently know what they're talking about and don't stray into 'square' territory (stuff like recency bias, betting a guy because he 'wants it' or some other stupid narrative, etc.) but I have not listened to the Pat Mayo pod yet, I'll have to give that one a shot.  

I like the nolayingup podcast and blog for good golf commentary and general previews, but they don't focus on betting.  

Some guys I think are very smart and do golf 'analytics' are jake nichols (@jalnichols, writer for 15th club which is also worth checking out), rich hunt (@Richie3Jack, runs a blog no big whoop), and daniel myers (@DSMok1, does updated golfer rankings semi-weekly, has win%, top 5%, top 10% for all majors).  These guys are numbers based, but also know a bit about the sport (15th club does consulting for individual golfers, rich does the same I believe).  

The thing about golf is I don't think it's close to being solved yet.  And among the major sports, I think it is the one most conducive to actual 'hot streaks', mental game, and narratives.  Stupid example, but I was at the range the other night hitting my 5i long and straight for a good 30 minutes, then some ####### comes through with his 3 kids making a bunch of noise and I proceeded to shank every shot I hit for the rest of my time there.  So I think the mental game is a real thing in that sport, even and maybe especially at the professional level.

When I saw Rodgers was the guest, I couldn't believe how lucky he got with him appearing two days after those comments came out. Figured he stepped in #### and had a lock viral clip coming even if Rodgers just gave a very political answer. I can't imagine he didn't try to ask the question and Rodgers shot it down, which is funny because Simmons has gone after other people for softball interviews. Especially when Rodgers and his girlfriend don't exactly shy away from the public. 

 
Ringer just put out an article ranking the games on the retro NES. Thought that would be a good read. They then literally just ranked the 30 games with no commentary about them whatsoever. 

I can't pick which new enterprise of his is worse. 

 
Thought Simmons had an orgasm when Rodgers called Tom Brady 'your boy' or something like that.

I'm not a fan of this show. Small part because it's a slow sports season, but mostly cause TV doesn't serve BS well.

:lmao:  I just read that and had the exact same thought. That article is a perfect example of 75% of Ringer articles and everything that is wrong with the site. I had been visiting periodically to read their Game of Thrones stuff, but I'm about to delete the bookmark.

They also had "Tecmo Bowl" at #8.  Either they meant Tecmo Super Bowl, in which case, this is poor research/editing or they really meant original Tecmo Bowl.  If the latter, the writer should be fired on the spot.  That's not even a matter of opinion, that's like trying to argue that "Ernest Goes to Camp" is superior to "The Godfather."

After an auspicious podcasting start (I thought the first month or so was as good or better than the old BS stuff), everything, the podcasts, the Ringer, this stupid show, all are just garbage. It's looking like full control was a bad idea which honestly surprises me. I mean, we all expected the show to be kind of hammy and awkward, but I really thought Bill had a good eye for quality. It's like the opposite is true.

It's really disappointing and kind of sad. Podcasts have replaced most other forms of sports media for me (besides the games of course) and I kind of "grew up" with Bill. But now he's just like Jordan on the Wizards. Old and in the way.

Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll get hit by a meteor or something, but methinks this all ends messily.

HBO is paying him an absurd salary each year though. They aren't going to make that back on podcasts or that stupid-### ringer site. So I imagine this show has a LOT of rope. 

Maybe he gets better, but the format sucks, he's just terrible and it isn't witty at all. His best attribute is long interviews and now he talks to these people for 8-minute clips that get cut up. Baffling. 

Edit: even though I don't think he's very "sports-intelligent" I've always liked his stuff too, generally. I mean, if he put out one of his long idiotic columns on the NBA today I would read it.

Guy missed out on great pod material during latter portion of nba playoffs but never misses a chance to drone on about deflategate.  Maybe nfl ref season will save this guy but it's sinking fast. 

 
I'll go ahead and agree with those who are baffled by The Ringer.  It's already been said, but any interesting article I come across abruptly ends right as I'm getting interested.

Really ridiculous he's taking a week off. Summer months there isn't much going on in sports, probably the perfect time to grab an attention share of sports fans and keep your product out there.  What a mess.  I go to ringer nowadays to marvel at how ridiculous it is.  We got a 14 min podcast this morning with Jacko this morning at least discussing Donald Trump.  It's really over, isn't it?

I wonder what the strategy was. I guess i can see the merit to starting when not much else was going on. But I remember when the HBO deal was first announced, the idea was that the show would start in the spring. Which makes sense given all that is going on in sports. Get your first run out in the spring, maybe take some time over the summer to work out the kinks, and then come back in the fall with things tightened up and football season gets underway.

I can't imagine that HBO was so desperate for 30 mins of midweek programming that they were the ones pushing for summer. I feel like I remember him saying at some point on a podcast that they were going to need more time, so I'm guessing it was his call. But what exactly did he need to spend 9 months preparing for? This isn't like John Oliver's show where he has a team of researchers and writers working on 15 minute segments aimed at explaining some kind of important, yet difficult for the general public to make sense of, topic to the viewers.
