Just opened it Photoshop CS5.1 layer

I have CS 4. Flattening an image is common.But those who open this in Illustrator are saying something different. I have never used Illustrator but I understand that is much different that PS. One difference is that is vector based. If you have Illustrator open it up and tell us what you find.

If you had "CS4" aka Creative Suite 4, then you have Illustrator. What you have is PHOTOSHOP CS4.... a portion of the suite. Why don't you leave the big boy work to those of us with the big boy software, okay chief?

I'm not a software guy, so I'm not the expert on what is stated below. Just sharing.

Try the following: Save off a copy of the exact PDF file the White House has released as Obama's birth certificate this morning. Find yourself a copy of Adobe Illustrator (not Photoshop), and load up the PDF file in Illustrator. Then click on the center of the image of the birth certificate, then right-click on the center of the image, and click Release Clipping Mask.

Are you guys dense? I opened it in both Illustrator and Photoshop. There are no layers.

Also, the result would be the same regardless if opened in Photoshop or Illustrator. If a layered PDF is opened in either the layers are there. A document can be just as easily flattened in Illustrator as Photoshop if you know what you're doing (which you two clearly do not).

I opened it in IE, copied the whole thing and pasted it into Paint, and it stripped most of the text out. I don't know enough about this stuff to know what that means though.

If I was Obama, I would have made my appearance on Oprah this morning and told the audience that I have my long form birth certificate in my pocket but then refuse to show it.

Someone sent me an old Georgia Championship Wrestling clip that had what was obviously Tommy Rich in a wrestling mask. Rich had lost a loser leave town match and was using a false identity to illegally wrestle in whatever town it was. During the interview he lifted the mask up just a *little bit* then pulled it back down and said "NAWWWW"(those are the kinds of random things I'll just blurt out at the old folks home. carry on.)

Yeah, the claim of an "exception" to release the form is bizarre. Obama could have requested it and released it himself at any point. He simply chose not to until now.

Do you have a link supporting this? It goes against what the officials from the Hawaii Department of Health have stated.

Update: Here's the correspondence between the White House and the Hawaii Department of Health on this issue. An ordinary citizen cannot get the document Obama just posted; he had to pull some strings to get an exception.

Interesting comment in her response granting his waiver request:"We hope that issuing you these copies of your original Certificate of Live Birth will end the numerous inquiries received by the Hawaii Department of Health to produce this document. Such inquiries have been distruptive to staff operations and have strained State resources."

Damn liberals.

What I found was 9 different layers in the PDF document, and some clear signs from looking at the page(s) in an image editor that this birth certificate appears to have had some editing, or 'touching up' done.

Open the document in Illustrator CS2 and you'll get your answers. The text is layered. Some text is monochrome bitmap, some RGB, some are transparent overlay some are actually part of the background, some are individual letters.... this is a layered composited assembly of various objects.... whats revealing is that they are not just OCR optimized fragments, they are complete layers and floating text objects

No. It does the same thing for me as it does in the video. It's one layer, but there are multiple groups. I've never used Illustrator before now, so I don't know how all of that works.

I’m a life-long graphic designer and a PDF forensics-nerd. This document doesn’t have ‘layers.’ What’s happened to the image in the PDF is ‘smart bitmap optimization’ where parts of the image are broken up into different objects for the sake of achieving the smallest possible file size.

Nerdy explanation:

In the areas where the birth certificate is near-black, Adobe’s PDF-rendering engine eliminates the 8-bit RGB data and replaces it with a 1-bit layer with alpha. It’s all in the interest of reducing file size.

If this was a doctored file, as is being suggested by the discovery of these compression-objects, you would have an unobstructed image (namely, the paper) “below” these objects.

In short – modern PDF compression schemes create these types of files. There’s no sign of foul play.

I know we are off the reservation here in Birtherland, but I would just like to point out that the criticism about him taking "so long" to produce this is stupid, given that he asked for a copy of his Birth certificate, got it, and produced that before being elected. It is only in Birtherland that this ever was an issue, and ever required "fixing."

In other words, it was a special sort of person who was not inclined to believe the Hawaii Department of Health and Obama that his certificate of live birth (the thing all of us get when we need a copyy of our birth certificate) and require "more proof."

They must have one heck of a telephone tree set up.

I have seen Fox dismantle this birther argument many times. Probably part of the 52 times they covered this story.Ann Coulter, Hannity and others have been stating that the birther issue is a non issue for a significant amount of time.
