The case for starting sidney rice in week 3 (1 Viewer)

I'll keep it short but I'm going completely against the grain on rice for week 3. Here's why:

1) he has put in full practices last few days without restrictions or setbacks

2) as bad as tjax is he and rice so have a rapport for many years in practice and several in season games. The results were encouraging. Tjax fed him the ball consistently in minny

3) he knows the offense he is playing in as it's the same offensive coordinator in Darryl bevel (sp?) so he should e able to step in and be comfortable RT away

4) do we really think that pete Carroll would risk playing him if he though that there was a chance that rice could suffer some kind of irreparable damage to his shoulder Amarish could lose him for the season and maybe more? They just spent a lot of money on rice.

5) the matchup is an absolute cakewalk joke. Arizonas secondary has been absolutely torched in the first 2 games. They can't cover a sleeping baby with a blanket

6) let's not forget that rice has elite talent

Yes he has a labrum injury. Yes it's a risky play. But I think less risky than people are thinking. The onl real risk is that he aggravates the injury after a few plays and they shut him down. Which is entirely possible. But that can happen to any player.

If you are tryin to decid b/w a probable rice vs Arizona or let's say a mccluster or David Nelson or decker in your flex spot this week....I'd take the risk and roll with rice.

Thoughts?

Sidney Rice's best numbers in Minnesota were with Favre under center, he obviously knows TJax but I don't remember him being anywhere as dominant in games TJax played significantly

No he did play well in 2 games with tjax last year. Don't know the stats but they were good. Wr1 type #s

I disagree with the notion that he's startable over guys that have already shown something this season. If you have some ugly options you could do a lot worse, but for me this week is a "show me" opportunity and hopefully I can make a better evaluation going forward.

I've always loved Rice's talent and the whole Favre bit is fair, but it's not like Berrian saw the same bump in production. One promising thing is he's not only practicing, but reports yesterday on NFLN are saying he looks VERY good out there and would have played last week if Carrol had let him.

I'm not going to lie, I'm kinda excited to see the 'Hawks play this week.....:shudder: so dirty.

I like the guy and have him in a couple of EPSN leagues. I have better options to start over him this week. I wanna see how he does this week and go from there. I don't think he's gonna, pardon the pun, tear it up this week just because it's Arizona. I think they'll still be a little cautious with him. If he shows well this week then his playing time increases next week and he can be considered as a possible starter in fantasy leagues. Even though he's practiced full I just don't feel comfortable starting him this week. Others may and that's ok. I hope he does well for those who take the risk and start him.

It is surprising that you could confuse TJax with Favre. They don't look anything alike.

I guess that would be one of my fears...that they limit his snaps. But I just fit see it. Seahawks need to get a win. Carroll needs to defend his tjax decision. The only way tjax will look good is if rice makes him look good by using his big athletic frame to adjustto his poorly thrown balls all over the field.

David Nelson>Rice. it is safer and in ppr probably a higher ceiling

Can Rice stretch his hands out to make a catch? I seriously doubt he has 100% range of motion, but we will see.

Has me thinking of ling grain rice for some reason. The trainers obviously knows what they are dealing with, as Rice would have had surgery if he was prone to dislocations, just as John Carlson had to do. If Tavaris locks on him and BMW can draw coverage, maybe he is worth a stash. I just think there are other players available to fill the role.

Second that. One good year and he somehow got "elite"...real elite players have more than one year. Waste of a roster spot and no way could he be started.

Admittedly, I haven't had the opportunity to watch much of the Hawks games this year yet, but I don't get the impression the problem on offense has been at the WR position. Same WRs that they had last year (Williams, Obamanu, Tate), and while they lack a big playmaker they are serviceable. The problem is the protection for the QB and the QB himself. they simply don't give Jackson enough time to read a defense and check down on his WRs. In Minnesota he layed behind one of the best O-lines in football and for the most part had time to check down or make plays after his primary read.

I'm not saying Rice won't catch some balls but I wouldn't call him startable until the Seahawks prove they can give Jackson tim to throw. Start him at your own risk but be prepared for a 4 catch day with 50 yards.

Well. can't say I didn't tell you this would happen. I knew it would for all the reasons I stated. Nice first game back for rice. Tjax will feed him the ball all year from here on out. He almost caught a td as well and showed no I'll effects from his injury.

So happy I started him over mcgahee in my flex. If he is on te waiver wire I your league you need to get on that. And if he is on the wire bc YOU dropped him...shame on you!

Sidney rice IS an elite WR when healthy.

Glad I had nothing better to start. Maybe he can take over as the #2 that I drafted him at.

Nice call man. Injury concerned me... you really didn't see any lingering issues with it? Couldn't see the game.

I benched him in favor of D Branch... what a mistake...

How'd look in terms of an eye test?

He looked totally fine. Didn't seem to have any restricted movement from the injury. It's the type of injury that would worry me for a qb not as much for a wr.

Seattle can't run the ball. So how are they gonna score? It's rice or Williams. I'll go with rice. As a wr3 or wr4 you can do much worse moving forward.

Exactly. I can't believe people were against even rostering him or had him on dump lists before he even had a shot. It wasn't all Favre in Minnesota and I thought that was apparent in year two without Rice. I hope he keeps it up. :banned:
