The Dallas / N. Texas thread (aka - is there really a difference between energy providers?) (1 Viewer)

Koya

Footballguy
As many folks know, I'm moving to Dallas.

My immediate question is what difference is there in energy providers? I need to pick one before moving into my apartment. I do notice two of the choices are renewable energy, and they are not to most expensive options (nor are they the least). Wifey will like that for sure.

So, difference in service? Can't imagine some companies lose power when others dont as I'd think that's likely a local deliver issue - am I correct or not in that assumption.

FINALLY, and more important long term... Is there a Dallas/North Texas, or even Texas thread as there is a NY thread (that thing is a wealth of knowledge from folks in and outside NYC, and has exceptional local-context shtick).

Energy in a nutshell

-everyone is served by same provider. Uptime and downtime is not a concern. This is still regulated.

-you buy energy on open market in bulk based on your usage patterns. The actual reseller is not important. This is unregulated. The worst issue you could encounter is a billing problem

-the most important thing is understanding how much you will use so you can by the right package that matches it.  A high use buyer will pick something quite different than you. Once you pick you are locked in for a period of time.

If Dallas' market is anything like Houston's one company (Centerpoint) delivers all the power and there's really no great difference between the providers.  If you want all green energy you can choose a provider that generates theirs by wind but all gets fed into the same grid.  The PowerToChoose website sucks but it's a starting point.

Thanks, much appreciated.  I won't be a high usage user, other than my wifes penchant for leaving all things electric on. Oooh, lights? ON!   Lamp? On too!  Ceiling fan... the cats like watching it. SUPER ON

BTW, that other thread sucks.   Come on Texas, I have VERY high expectations.

I'll start... The Porch in Knox-Henderson is over-rated and Blackfire has a couple hot bartenders, good cheap drinks and a decent vibe.  The irish bar across the street (same ownership, forget name), smells like crap.

Industry Alley Bar in Cedars is awesome... well made drinks, chill vibe and they let me eat the South Side Apartments Happy Hour pizza.

Finally, Armoury DE in Deep Ellum is pretty cool for a hipster bar with good Romanian food (bring on the Paprika!) and excellent cocktails

:banned:

Where do I need to go for BBQ? And as it's Texas, I assume that means Beef.  Around/near Uptown, Deep Ellum etc are best, and if worth a drive I'll take names further out.

Congrats on the move Koya!

My parents moved down to Dallas in 1984 so I've been down there many times. Mom lives in Carrollton.

If you're looking for a good mom-n-pop type lunch place for BBQ outside the city, check out Off The Bone BBQ

Also, for another cool area, north of the city, check out The Shops at Legacy in Plano. Ton of bars and restaurants. Only went for the first time last year but it's a cool area.

A good steakhouse NW of the city (towards the airport) is The Ranch at Las Colinas Probably make a really good business lunch spot too.

Good luck there!

 Pecan Lodge rules all.

Lockhart in bishop arts has lost a step.

If going north of the wall I like 1050 quite a bit.

Ill meet you for lunch at any of these places
