A short film about 9/11 and George W Bush throwing the first pitch in the World Series at Yankee Stadium on Sports Center this morning.

Catch it if you can, I really thought it was great.

ETA - Watch here.

Thanks for the link, just watched it.

Very cool.

My dad, a Yankee fan, died on the morning of Game 7. I sat with my mom and brother watching it at their house and for the first time ever, seriously rooted for the Yankees to win. Of course they lost but with everything going on after 9/11 and this, it was a very surreal time.

Can we PLEASE keep politics out of this. Plenty of threads for that.

Thank you for the link.

I was at the game. Very surreal atmosphere in the stadium that night, nothing like any other playoff game I've been to. There was a heavy secret service presence, lots of guys with radios in their ears walking up and down all over before the game - and that was just the guys we knew of. There were snipers on the roof of the old courthouse beyond the right field wall, and we had to pass through metal detectors prior to entry. I remember that contributed to almost half the stadium showing up WAY late to the game because of the people traffic outside.

That moment was awesome though, crowd noise was incredible when he threw a strike. The deafening power from chants of U-S-A, U-S-A is something I'll never forget.

They made a big deal out of this on Mike and Mike this morning, but I don't remember it at all. And I don't remember thinking it was a big deal at the time.

I guess that's just me.

You can be the biggest card-carrying, dyed-in-the-wool Bush hater but if you don't recognize how well GWB communicated to the American people that things were going to get better in the weeks and months after 9/11 you're a moron.

Maybe it was the down-home persona, the accent, or whatever but the things he said and did that fall and winter were just right.

Yep. I really did not like GWB as president, but thought the way he handled the immediate aftermath of 9/11 was about as good as could possibly be expected. The first pitch at the Yankees game was a great moment.

The first pitch falls into a bigger backstory. Watch it if you have 20 mins.

Those were some great moments during very troublesome and turbulent times.

An amazing world series.

The 1st game back in NY (Mets/Braves @ Shea) is another one that gives me chills.

Piazza home run and Bobby Valentines reaction.

Good moments

That was great...living in NY and being a big baseball fan at the time, this moment this game was so important for the healing to start.

As a Yankee fan, even I smiled when Piazza hit that homerun. The Mets as an organization were great post 9/11, their entire roster was everywhere front and center to support the city

The Jeter story at 15:32 is awesome. Being in the stadium that night was electric. The security was insane - they landed 4 helicopters next to the stadium so you didn't know which one he was on.

You got that right.

The President always travels with multiple helicopters for this reason. When he is leaving the White House, you can see all of the copters circling and then they fly off on different paths to the destination. Any airplane he is on is Air Force One, any helicopter is Marine One.

From Wikipedia:

As a security measure, Marine One always flies in a group with identical helicopters, sometimes as many as five. One helicopter carries the President, while the others serve as decoys. Upon take-off these helicopters begin to shift in formation to obscure the location of the President. This has been referred to as a presidential shell game.[19] Marine One is also equipped with standard military anti-missile countermeasures such as flares to counter heat-seeking missiles and chaff to counter radar-guided missiles, as well as AN/ALQ-144A infrared countermeasures.[20]
It is a neat thing to see in DC, you will often see them circling around the city. Must make it a PITA the ATCs at National Airport!

I'll never forget that series. I was at game 1 and game 7 in Phoenix. The feeling on the streets of downtown Phoenix after game 7 was like nothing I've ever seen. No fights, no riots, just a lot of hugging and friendship from diamondback and Yankee fans alike. It was really surreal, and I'm happy to have been a small part of it.
