I'm going Young Frankenstein here, if only because of the way BZ just seems to fall apart at the end.

I actually had a conversation recently with a woman who said she "hates" Mel Brooks, she "hates" every movie he ever made, but especially BS & YF.

I think I looked at her like she had just told me she had syphilis.

I think Young Frankenstein holds up best. I agree that many of them haven't aged well, but comedy often doesn't.
The reason? It was co-written by Wilder.

Brooks mostly goes for cheap laughs - crude humor and shock value. Generally not funny to me.

My problem with Spaceballs isn't so much that its sophomoric. I laughed at the "we ain't found ****" scene even though its sophomoric and a bit racist. The difference is that Pizza the Hut isn't just sophomoric. It was just wildly lazy. I'm pretty sure every 10 year old in America had made that joke.

Voted Blazing Saddles over Young Frankenstein because the supporting cast is just a little better. Harvey Korman and Slim Pickens were exceptional. Those two films are his best to me.

History of the World had its moments, as did Spaceballs, but they were also the beginning of the end.

I figure YF and Blazing Saddles will run away with this so I voted History of the World.

Quote two parts from this movie all the time (that I can't link here).

And Madeline Kahn is so filthy in this one. Love her - such an underrated comedian. And Dom Deluise as Cesar. :lmao:

eta: The Producers above HoTW.

"Hey. You look like the piss boy"

"Well you look like a bucket of ####"

That scene cracks me up every time.

I don't know how little known or well known this, but apparently BZ was partly initiated with Richard Pryor in mind for the Sheriff and he actually wrote some of the lines, including the "Mongo just pawn in game of life" scene. - Supposedly Rich got so loaded/high that he sort of fell out of the process and production eventually.

BS > YF > HOTW > SB for me. There are so many gags/jokes in BS that you just can't get away with today. To think that this movie was the start of the "on air flatulence" movement in movies is great. YF has its moments and quote-worthy lines as well.

Loved Mel Brooks' movies growing up. Everytime I saw one come to the theater I knew I was going to see it. Now, not so much. I remember going to see RH:MIT, but that was the low point for me. Some good schtick there, but not as great as his older stuff.

The Mongo scenes were funny - as well as the lead up.

"Mongo isn't so much a he as a what."

"On no. Don't do that. If you shoot him you'll just make him mad."

Don't get saucy with me Béarnaise

I really liked, although I would not have voted for it here, "To Be or Not To Be" I guess it's not really a Mel Brooks movie, he produced it but didn't write or direct. Nevermind. Still, funny movie.

Harvey Korman kills in these movies. Gotta go with BZ based on Hedley.

Blazing Saddles is a masterpiece but Silent Movie was Mel Brooks showing everyone just how funny he really is.

I've always equated Harvey Korman to John Candy in that they are better accompanying/supporting actors than leads.

Used to love Korman on the Carol Burnett show. He'd always cut up when he did a skit with Tim Conway.
