The Games are Really Bad Now (1 Viewer)

That is part of the problem with the NFL Office....if it close games all is good. Exciting is not the same as quality play.

But if you watch the games they are pretty brutal overall this year. Variety of reasons for this I believe: lack of actual practice time (as Bill B says the first three weeks are now really preseason level of play as they try to get aclimated) and a lot of young players being put in key positions before they are ready. But I am not sure I remember a season where so many OL seem to be completely overmatched by the defenses - I believe this is directly related to much of the poor QB play. Watching the games it seems about half of the QBs are under duress when they plant their back foot.

The standard of play when it is “good” on offence is so much higher than it used to be. When we see play not up to that standard it looks worse than it did in the past.

It really seems the NFL has taken a step back this year. Bad coaching, bad quarterback play….

Just a weird vibe watching these games. And some overall bad football.
Coaching in the NFL right now is off the charts stupid. The Browns go for it at their own 35. Gifting the Chargers points which ends up being the win. The Chargers try and gift the win right back to the Browns later on by going for it themselves when a good coach kicks the ball away with the few seconds remaining. Fortunately the Browns play calling is so stupid they couldn't get 15 yards to make it an easy FG for the win.

Yes, stupidity and bad coaching is at an all-time high and it as all due to the failure called analytics.

If you’re expecting last year’s conference semifinal games every week, you’re going to be sorely disappointed.

Otherwise I don’t think this is discernably worse than what we usually get.

There may be some questionable coachjng decisions, but there always has been. Do you remember football before fantasy? As much as I love fantasy, it changes our perception and expectations of the game. Low scoring fantasy scores does not always mean bad football.

It felt like there were 10 guys with over 150 yards rushing today. What is everyone complaining about?

Edit: and they are all going against me.

AWFUL AWFUL TAKE

Many fun games to watch. Seems about the same as it's ever been.

another terrible take. Using stats to correct old school deficiencies in decision making? Oh the horror. Lot of revisionist BS when it doesn't work out.

I agree that the quality of the game has noticeably devolved in recent years—and especially this season up to this point. I was listening to the sirius xm fantasy station on the way back from work a few days ago and they were discussing this very topic. Bart Scott (formerly of the Jets) was being interviewed and was asked for his opinion on this subject—and he firmly felt like the quality of the game was really bad. He put most of it on how teams are mandated to have fewer practices and how the amount of contact in practices is regulated. He said this explains a lot about the poor tackling, why players are having a lot of injuries that might be due to a lack of conditioning (hamstrings and things of that nature). He certainly has more knowledge than I do on the subject-so I feel like that there is probably some validity to that point of view.

This is a good point. Some of the QBs now are setting the bar so absurdly high that average QB play just looks underwhelming now.

Agreed.

The NFL is lucky they came up with the idea for RedZone. Without that or fantasy FF, who is sitting down to watch these 3.5 hours filled with ads?

Quality of play is still mostly good although the NFL is really hurt by not having a real minor league to develop better coaches, players, and refs. A lot of square pegs in round holes out there

Pussification of America is trickling down to contact sports which will affect the quality over time
Okay grandpa
You`ll see, more and more parents are not going to allow their kids to play any sports where concussions are common. The talent pool is going to dwindle down slowly but surely
 the game is played faster, and at a higher level than ever before.

And, you're right the talent pool is diminishing but I think the main talent pool probably didn't care and doesn't care so I'm not holding my breath for a legit decline in quality of product.

This, though I’d choose more refined language as apparently this opinion makes me a grandpa. I watch very little NFL anymore for a variety of reasons. I mostly don’t like how one player, the QB, holds so much power, the offense-friendly rules and the uneven reffing, and the fact that a WR going across the middle can’t get lit up.

It seems weird that with all the rules geared to supporting the offense, most offenses these days still aren't very good.
