The Games are Really Bad Now (1 Viewer)

I like today's game, but going forward, if everyone is in the concussion protocol it may turn into the no touch league or the National Flag Football League.

One thing they need to do something about next year is get rid of kickoffs if they are going to kick it through the end zone 99% of the time and start on the 25. Hell, just start on the 25, or move the kickoff back to at least what it was in the old days, the 35 yard line. I know they moved it up to reduce the number of kickoff returns to reduce the number of injuries, but the way it is today is ridiculous. Just eliminate kickoffs and start on the 25 if they are so worried about injuries.

Add bad officiating.. I have watched more college football than pro football this year.
Weird, I think college officiating is as least as bad as NFL officiating. And more biased on top of that. Inter-conference games you can bet that there will be calls in favor of which ever conference’s refs are officiating.

One thing NFL replay has done is make officials worse. Before replay there was more pressure on officials to get it right the first time. Now, they know replay will correct their mistakes. I know they are probably graded on this, but I don't think they can help themselves knowing the cameras will bail them out. For example, it seems as if they always call it a fumble until the replay shows it's not.

IMO it is the OL play is biggest issue we are seeing with some football that has not looked great.

The game itself remains relatively fine but the more and more the league continues to prioritize player safety the worst it will continue to get. Sorry if that comes across as insensitive but this is the life they chose and a a life most of us would gladly take, risk included, if we were good enough.

The latest concussion protocols are going to be a major PIA for fantasy football moving forward and not because of how you manage your teams leading up the game but what is going to be a surge of early game exits. Mulligan leagues or any such league allowing you to replace one lineup mistake might be the wave of the future, and I for one would like to see it.

I believe leagues should offer the option that if a player is labeled as OUT in the first half for any injury reason they should be able to offer a replacement, as long as the replacement is posted before their game starts. I also feel they should only be able to do this if a player goes out in the first half, because if they sucked for 3 QTRs and get concussed in the 4th, you shouldn't be able to replace them. I believe leagues are headed in this direction because of the quick hook, especially with concussions. Of course a player could score two TDs in the first half and get concussed in the first half, so the owner would have the option of keeping him in their lineup.

The game is good. The advertisements are killing the product. Watching a game is like 1/3rd commercials. Yet next month, the most watched sporting event in the world will only show commercials during half time.
That's why there is beer in the refrigerator.

Wife watched a recorded Steeler game one evening while I was knitting, and the feed automatically skipped all ads plus the meaningless plays. It was over before I could purl a row. That's the way to watch 'em.

while you was knitting? There's no knitting in football!! Unless your name is Rosey Grier.

Almost a 100% non-factor to me but I might be the wierdo. I don't watch games live when it's just a single game. Have not for years except like the SB.

When multiple games are going on at once I don't care about commercials because I just move to watching a game that is playing.

If I had to sit through commercials during solo games I'd watch less football and miss a lot of the stuff in the games I do watch because I'd get distracted and start doing other things.

It's going to take some time. Initial reaction is going to be something along the lines of tough titty, that's the breaks. But as it starts to happen more often, to more fantasy teams I do think we'll eventually see a change.

From what I understand the new protocols prevented Teddy B from re-entering the game yesterday. That impacted some people but wait till it happens to more marquee players at more crucial times who later say they felt fine and never had a concussion. This is not going to be a unusual thing so much as something we'll start to see likely almost weekly with players rules out who would have otherwise returned until the new protocols took place.

Either way early in game injury exits are the worst feeling in fantasy. Ruins whole days.

Never watch it, literally have not seen it in years.

I watch the DirectTV box that has up to 8 games on my screen at once and allows you to flip around for which one you want to have volume on or switch to exclusively.

Also why I hate when the league keeps putting 9 games on in the early Sunday kickoff. I got to put that 9th game cut out of the 8 game box on a computer or tablet.

Seems like ppl in this forum keep up with NFL for fantasy purposes rather than the traditional fan. I think people who are into a specific team, I don't see how watching their games couldn't be frustrating with all the commercial time outs. That is, unless one has become numb to it.

I have to have redzone channel. It is the best thing to come along since sliced bread.

Watching tnf, snf and mnf is painful now. I very very rarely watch the whole game

Most sundays I watch RZ from 1pm til it’s over

TV money pays the contracts, commercials pay the TV deals. We could get rid of the commercials... if guys want to go back to playing part time in between real jobs.

To your first point, this is me now. I barely watch football anymore. I'm good just getting the stats for fantasy purposes. After 30+ years of playing fantasy it has ruined me as a "team" fan or even for having patience to wait for the results to roll out. Also, I can't sit around and watch TV all day - especially this time of year.

Fantasy has never gotten in the way of me being a Colts fan and never will. I never really understood that mentality

I swear, I don't mind 3 minutes of commercials at the end of a drive or a change in possession. If a team calls timeout, sure show some commercials. If a play is being reviewed, that's going to take the refs a few minutes so sure show some ads. But when it's scoring play - commercials - kickoff - commercials - next drive starts it drives me nuts.

I usually alternate between my home team & redzone. Eliminates the ads while still keeping my eye on everything.

For the most part, I enjoy the games. I think we can all agree that TNF game (Colts/Broncos) was about as bad can be but overall, product seems good. Any given Sunday a team can win and I think that is preferred for most casual viewers. Would most viewers prefer to see all games in the 28 to 35 scoring range? Maybe, but I don't mind some decent defense. Inept offenses are difficult to watch though and, for that, I will partially agree that some games just suck.

NFL should be better about flexing games midway unless the game is in that city or state.

Interesting. Hypothetical case... you've got Derrick Henry on your fantasy team and he's playing the Colts during FF championship game. You would actually root for the Colts to stop him cold?

Does any american football player make as much as Messi? Yet Soccer does not stop for commercials. These media productions are only one stream of revenue for the NFL, oddly one that is counter productive.

I would much rather their uniforms have sponsers on them. The games are already played at M&T Bank Stadium and SoFi fields.

Interesting concept (something as a league commish, I may start to consider in coming years). My next question would be are we only offering this for concussions? What separates that from a guy blowing his knee in the first quarter?

Yeah I remember a few years ago (and they still might but I only watch RedZone now), I always particularly hated the single commercial after kickoff as the team gets onto the field. Talk about trying to squeeze in every last second with crap ads.

Yeah RZ is the way to go. God I'm hoping there's an easy way to get it in 2023 and beyond.

As for TNF, SNF and MNF... TNF and SNF I usually just watch from my futon whilest playing games on my phone, checking fantasy scores every now and then. MNF is great for me 'cuz I stop by my local dive bar and watch there with a bunch of folks, willing my teams to victory. That being said... about time to head out! :)

Without hesitation, absolutely. I was a Colts fan long before I played fantasy football and I don't need the money.

While I admire your effort to "fly the flag" to make soccer a thing. It ain't happening as long as there is NFL football available.

The Thursday games are horrible. Get rid of em. NFL is so money hungry it's unbelievable

Love TNF maybe even more then SNF or MNF. Pretty much anytime I can get a game moved from Sunday early or later afternoon to any other time I can focus solely on that game I consider good.

The early morning London games are the exception. I could live without them, that's just a long day of football and plus a PIA needing to set some lineups early in the morning as many a late sleeping Kamara owner could have told you last week.

Personally if this ever came into being I'd like to see just a mulligan allowed period to cover for that one agonizing bad start call. But if it's just for players that early exit seems like easiest thing to do is allow for any early exit injury. I think we just got on topic of concussions because the new protocols will increase the in-game exits, maybe heavily.

I did say any player labeled out fo any injury.

What will the reaction be when they start giving the hook to star QBs in the playoffs and the Super Bowl when he‘s begging to go back in because he believes he’s fine? Don’t you think there will be an uproar? I can see it now, some guy loses millions on a bet because of the concussion protocol and goes postal.

I ran a league like this 25 years ago in the pen and paper scoring USA today days. Rules were set up unusual for the time and emphasized QB scoring, and you were allowed to post a "backup QB". If for any reason your starting QB left before halftime and didn't return, your backup counted instead. Wasn't that hard to do.
As soon as major fantasy sites (MFL etc.) support settings like this it will start becoming more common I think, but NOBODY wants to go back to lots of manual changes to make it work.

They ruined their own game by lying to their workforce for 25 years instead of just acknowledging that concussions are just part of it like boxing and mma.

Had they just said yup, some hits scramble your brains, don’t play if you don’t want to. We’d still have the game we loved.

Just straight best ball leagues. Whoever scored the most on your roster is who you started.

"the games are really bad now" is a little dramatic for me, but man, it does seem like there has been a lot of bad (or at the very least uninteresting) football going on so far this season.

now what constitutes good or bad will obviously vary from person to person, but let me real quick try to label the games from this week:

good games: high scoring, fun, close, back and forth, big plays: 3 - cle/lac, sea/no, lv/kc

bad games: beatdowns, close boring games: 6 - ind/den, ne/det, buff/pitt, hou/jax, mia/nyj, sf/car

meh games: games that were fine overall, but didnt really live up to their potential and/or just werent all that compelling: 7 - gb/nyg, minn/chi, bal/cinn, lar/dal, phi/ari, tenn/wash, tb/atl

so, for me, i would only say that 6 of the games were outright bad, but there was just a ton of meh going on. i think its more accurate to say that the football being played this year hasnt been of the highest quality as opposed to being "really bad".

I don't know, are we not remembering how insane the early games of week 1 were? There was so many amazing finishes going on at the same time and it was hard to keep up. Overall this year has been below average in terms of entertainment, but that's going to happen and people are going overboard on the whole "these games suck" thing.

No one responded to this. I really want to know what others opinion are on this.

Without hesitation, absolutely. I was a Colts fan long before I played fantasy football and I don't need the money.

You can do both. You can be happy Henry scores 3 TD's and rushes for 180 yds and the Colts win 28-21. Win-Win

I am about to complete my first NFL weekend without watching a a moment of a game since 1986 (10 years old).

Crazy... doubt I missed a thing.

You only missed 5 guys RB/WR that scored 3 TDs each.

Thank you for articulating this perfectly... your first and only effort lies in a few players having good stats.

Not a mention or finger lifted about any good games played.
