The Great 2020 All Time Movie Draft- The judging is heavily biased against me. It’s a hoax! Fake news. (1 Viewer)

1.10 - Star Wars: A New Hope - Best Movie Ever

Flipped a coin and this won. I liked her before she was surgically altered by He Who Shall Not Be Named but still...this movie still reverberates 40 years after its release. No other movie has that much influence.
I have walked out of one movie my entire life.  I was 11, it was back in 1977...

Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.

1.11 Best Children's Movie- The Wizard of Oz (1939)

dir. by Victor Fleming, starring Judy Garland, Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Billie Burke and Frank Morgan.

A little bit of draft strategy for me. I am generally not much of a fan of kids movies so this was one of the thinner categories for me. It has to be the most watched and loved kids movie ever made and it's a favorite of mine from childhood. I remember the few times a year it would appear on TV and gathering with my family to watch it. Great characters, great songs, great production value and even 80 years later it still entertains audiences of all ages. It's one of the last old school cultural touchstones that the country still shares.

Finally a good pick.

Unforgiven- excellent film but way too early.

Spielberg- category is too deep so not the best pick for round 1.

Star Wars- an embarrassment for best movie. Thankfully for Andy there are other categories he can move it to that it will score very highly.

Tim is throwing some HEAT. I love it.

When I was little [70's), I remember one particular Easter Sunday showing.

As part of my Easter basket, I got some Silly Putty

Well, I made the silly animals and silly shapes ... I bounced the silly balls ... I stretched the silly strings ... I picked up the silly pics; and stretched 'em ever sillier.

And, yes - I'm sure Silly Putty did all those things!

But - It was just not silly enuff fer my tastes, until the Wizard came on that night, and I made a silly witch nose and wore it out!

That was super-silly! 👃

Great movie, too. 👍

Generally agree with this

I will say I’m surprised by how the first round has gone.  I will also say that from a personal taste perspective I love just about everything chosen so far - we can get to the pretentious crap picks later.

Wow, still on the board...

Trying not to spotlight but it's tough with this one... IMHO a perfect movie with a top notch cast who should all be on the short list in all major categories, actor, actress and supporting actor as well as a top tier Director and a first rate screenplay.  Winner of 3 Academy Awards including Best Picture, adapted Screenplay and Director

A legendary all time song and some of the most famous quotes in movie history:

  • Play it once, Sam. For old times' sake. aka Play it again Sam
  • Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.
  • Here's looking at you, kid.
  • I'm shocked to find out that gambling is going on!
  • Round up the usual suspects
  • I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
  • We'll always have Paris.

Didn't think it would be as popular with this group but your logic is flawless. One of my favorites and i still find new favorite lines when I watch it.

Great pick - getting it here surprises me.  Love this movie.

1.13 The Shawshank Redemption- Greatest Movie of All-time

I told myself that I would not get caught up on lists or critics choices in this draft. I am going to select as many of my favorite movies as I can and The Shawshank Redemption is on of my all time favorites. It is the best Stephen King adaptation a superb screenplay and cast. I may move it category wise as the draft moves on but for now it is in the greatest movies of all time for me.

Another movie I haven't seen.  Why am I helping in this draft?  Hahaha

Now you're talking.   Finally a movie I have seen.  Surprised it is taken this early.  It just goes to show this draft is going to be all over the place because of the pure subjective nature of movies.

Was in consideration at pick 1.06 ... my first thought was to slot in the 1940s.

One thing that's leading me to overanalyze things is the slotting -- should it be an All-Time Movie? Or a Decade selection? Or a Genre? Definitely a very different set of considerations from the Sports Draft. Much more fluid and less clear-cut.

Good pick on Casablanca, it wouldn’t have gotten past me in round 2. Easily one of the most rewatchable movies out there.

1.15 - Movie based on book or novel - To Kill A Mockingbird (1962)

Could've picked about 9 categories for this, but felt right to go with Harper Lee's Pulitzer-prize winning book.

@Mrs. Rannous you are up, and have 2 picks, unless we have added more participants

Where can I stream this? Is it on HBO Max or something?
Yes it is. It’s a perfect blend of drama, comedy, romance, music. The cast is incredible. It just as a special vibe being at Rick’s Cafe. It’s even more special as it went into production before Pearl Harbor and comes out during WW2 and the cast is mostly made of actual European refugees.

Not my personal favorite but a great pick and I think it deserves top consideration for the category. I think the bigger and more well known/loved the book is, the more consideration the movie should get in this category. There’s lots of examples of bad or relatively unknown books becoming movies but I think getting a combo of a classic novel and a classic movie should be the goal with this category.

I was gonna select a different category (the obvious one), but like you, used a bit of draft strategy here.
