The Great 2020 All Time Movie Draft- The judging is heavily biased against me. It’s a hoax! Fake news. (3 Viewers)

Both of my movie picks  (Apocalypse Now and Citizen Kane ) are on HBO Max

I was scrolling through last night, and they also have a couple others drafted like Jaws, Spirited Away, and Singing in the Rain.

Needed somebody with the cred or the boredom to make it happen
Lol.  Fair enough.

Having a list would also be great for the judges to have in a one-stop shop format so they can watch something they haven't seen if possible.   The site that I use to search is justwatch.com/us   I think somebody else poste that too, but it's also great for scrolling through by actor or director to see what there is available to stream that way too.   Especially with us having foreign and classics in the mix, I get the feeling that HBO and Kanopy will be mentioned a fair bit.

ETA:  i did suggest it before i started the draft, so I guess it did take somebody with the street cred to get the ball rolling.  ;)

Just kidding GB - I honestly missed you saying that.  Now I'm wondering if it makes more sense to link that spreadsheet to the justwatch site.  Then we could link every pick and it would stay up to date

Probably a good idea.  Doesn't matter what site we use, but it would be cool if the people drafting the picks would look it up and put in the post if we went that route, so 1 or 2 people don't have to do all the searching themselves.

While I love both movies they are both in my all time favorites list, I don't consider either movie selected in the category so far to be horror movies.   I get it, they are listed that way sometimes, but to me it feels like the "is Led Zeppelin metal?" argument every time with horror movies.

Agree but by linking to justwatch (thanks for that, very cool) it's pretty easy to do and I don't mind if it makes it easier for everyone.  I'm tracking all the movies to see which ones I need to put on my watch list so I'm fine doing it and just adding the links to the spreadsheet.  If folks want to go ahead when they make their picks even better and handy for the thread readers.

Awesome.  Thanks to you guys for the work on the sheet and the links!

I think in the two decades or so after Psycho, the horror genre began to get constrained in filmgoers' minds by certain stock tropes and conventions.

You know what I think? I think that we're all in our private traps, clamped in them, and none of us can ever get out. We scratch and we claw, but only at the air, only at each other, and for all of it, we never budge an inch.“

4.11: Psycho, Horror Film

I'm not sure what would Psycho be if not horror/thriller?

Sure it's more of a psychological thriller than a slasher film but agree that the definition of horror became somewhat warped when the genre took off in the 70s/80s but that shouldn't disqualify older films. I mean which movie is actually scarier, Psycho or some generic slasher film?

I hear ya, but I do think both movies Psycho and Silence have enough Horrific elements in it to safely qualify, I did a few more google searches and they both often do come up, but like you said, so does Jaws..

Now that I know I have a little flexibility to pivot to Book or 90's I may consider doing so, but the Horror category is not a strong one for me personally, but there might be another one or two I may be able to think of.... good to know you can move things around a bit down the line

I dont think this is the case, as there are tons of different types of horror movies.  Just like my argument with the LZ and metal or not, you can look at other movies in those years and find clear horror examples (ie, you have Black Sabbath around the same time a LZ).

Interesting debate is all.

to me Psycho created the modern version of Horror, I do think there are some worthy earlier films that can slide into that category as well... and to me Hannibal Lecter is one of the all time great horror villains...  it's a good debate

I always though Black Sabbath was the first metal band tho

I for sure argue less against Psycho than I do Lambs because of the landscape and what you said above about Psycho.  By the time we get to the 90s, the line is more clear IMO.

I see no reason not to consider Psycho a horror movie.

An argument could be made for Silence not being one, though.

For me, I kind of like the Wiki definition for once:

A horror film is a film that seeks to elicit fear for entertainment purposes.  I think both of those qualify.  Especially for the purposes of this draft - to me Horror Movie == Scary Movie

4.12 - ROCKY - Sports Movie

You don't get much better than this for a sports film. This was Sly's baby, and he was going to play Rocky no matter what. Good move, because it launched a great career. Movie had almost everything you want, and the fact that he doesn't win at the end makes it even better.  Welcome to the team Rock!

I think that definition takes out a few slam dunk horror movies, as they always arent seeking to elicit fear.  Good discussion anyway.

Huh - I'm struggling to think of any examples but I'll take your word for it - I know we can't spotlight.  I just can't think of any that don't use some element of fear as a means to entertain the viewer.

If I'm understanding Karma correctly ... he's thinking in terms of camp and/or satire in the horror genre. The kind of stuff a seasoned horror viewer might enjoy just fine, but never really be in fear at any point.

I will fully admit to making this more difficult than it probably needs to be.  I guess I don't think just trying to elicit fear is all of it.  Then what is the difference between a horror and a thriller movie? Aren't both trying to do the same thing in building tension/fear/dread?

What I am thinking of with my comment is there are movies that are toeing the lines of comedy a bit more (purposely) that IMO are more horror movies than SotL is.

4.14 When Harry Met Sally, Romance-Comedy

not my favorite genre, so i'll take my favorite by a LONG shot.
Very nice pick - just a perfect rom/com.  I like the genre a bit, but that was still the only movie I wrote down for the category as of this am.

I'm mostly thinking of that definition for this draft.  Because of when I grew up I immediately think of Slasher films as Horror.  But it's such a broad spectrum, that's why I liked the Wiki definition - to me, for it to be considered horror, there should be the element of fear.

4.15 - Seven Samurai - Foreign

Kurosawa got scooped up in Rd 3, so we'll take his masterpiece here. A 3+ hour film that doesn't feel that long at all for me the couple of times I've watched it. Yet another flex pick; this was groundbreaking in many ways for its action sequences.

I get that, but we also have the suspense category too.  So I guess for the draft purposes,  I am bickering because of that.  I would say that Jaws has just as many tense and horrific scenes as Psycho or Lambs do.
