The making of a good dynasty league (ESPN) (1 Viewer)

I have a very tight knit of friends that always play fantasy. Be it basketball or baseball and ofcourse football, we have always played veteran redrafts. This year we are looking to make it interesting and create a PPR startup dynasty and I would like to know what are your opinions on how many starters/bench spots a team should have, including IDP. Also it will be hosted on ESPN. This will be the 5th league I have commished however first time running a dynasty type league. It will be free for the first year.

Also I'd like to take note of the thought of having more than 14. We might let two more friends come play with us.

Sorry if this is the wrong board to post this on, and I apologize if this makes someone irate.

We have an ESPN IDP large keeper league of 16 friends I run. We have it set up for:Offense: 1QB, 1RB, 1WR, 1TE, 1WR/RB, 1WR/TEDefense: 2DT, 2DE, 2LB, 2CB, 2S, 1 Defensive Utility player (any position)Special teams: 1K and 1PBench: 10 slots + 2IR slotsEveryone seems generally pleased with the lineup format, the two limited flex positions allow for multiple "formations", and with such a shallow player pool from a 14 or 16 team league it makes it a little less stressful. With 16 teams, we have four divisions, and each team plays the other three in their division twice (all division games occur as the first and last three games of the season to avoid bye weeks), then play the other division in their conference once, with the remaining three games going to a rotating schedule of the division in the other conference. Division winners get into playoffs, with the one that has the better record getting the bye. The final playoff spot in each conference goes to the 2nd place squad with the better record. Every third season divisions are redrawn based on random draw so some rivalry can get established but monotony doesn't sit in.

I would advise against making it free the first year if you intend to make it a pay league later on. We did that in one league, and the weak teams fought making it a pay league the following year. If you have an older and bad to mediocre team, then why would you want to support a change to a pay league? It remains a free league now. Still fun, but tough (for me) to get really involved in the league unless there is at least some kind of financial prize. Might be different for you in that it is a group of tight knit friends, so bragging rights may be enough to play for. Just something to consider though.

Yeah that idea about either making it a pay league from the start or not at all makes sense. Anything else I should know?

Make sure you have a set of bylaws, even though you guys are friends. Make sure everything possible is addressed, even if it is overkill; some extra prep to begin with can abate some headaches down the line.

Here is an example of some really thorough bylaws: http://football99.myfantasyleague.com/2007...=15998&O=26

This isn't mine, someone gave this as an example a few years ago, and I have it book marked for just this reason. Obviously everything may not be pertinent to your league, but definitely look it over. Yours doesn't have to be as in depth, but I would suggest writing SOMETHING up, and having people sign it (or at least send an email that acknowledges reading it).

14-16 teams, I might go this way:

Start QRRWWWTK + one RWT flex, 1 DT, 2 DT/DE, 3 LB, 1 CB, 2 CB/S

PPR, 6 points per passing TD, 1/20 passing, 1/10 r/r

1.5 tackle, .75 assist, 5 INT/Sack, 3 FF/FR

Total rostered players in the league around 600-650, so for 14 teams, 45 total players. For 16 teams, 40 total players.

Make sure you put in some kind of free agency period - maybe protect 30 players, get matching rights for 5 more. Award fakebucks at the end of the year based on performance (bad teams get more) to be used in free agency.

I would suggest bidding for waiver pickups during the season.

Limit how far into the future you can trade picks from - 1 or 2 years.

I say skip IR and taxi squads - they don't add any fun IMO. It's more interesting to make a team decide whether to keep Stewart Bradley as a dead roster spot for a season or drop him (and hope they can pick him back up in week 12 or so).

Zealots has a good set of rules, though I'd like slightly different lineups and scoring (they're too RB-heavy).
