The middle-aged dummies are forming a band called "Blanket"! It's a cover band. (2 Viewers)

Amongst the Last Five Outs, Blinded by the Light may be the one with the greatest gap in favor of the cover between what I think of the cover and what I think of the original. Much of that has to do with what I think of the original, which the Thumper Rule prevents me from expanding upon here.

I dig Bruce's version. It's a little out of place for him but it's a cool song. I like the MMEB cover a lot too.
I think I’m one of the few that prefer Bruce’s version to the sterile MMEB version.

You're not the only one.

31.ee - Jonathan Butler feat. Stevie Wonder - Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You) (Stevie Wonder cover)

The original:
Although overshadowed a bit by his epic run of albums that followed it, Stevie's 1972 Music Of My Mind LP was the record where he broke free from the constraints of the Motown system. The second song of the album was his longest and most ambitious composition yet. The eight minute suite consists of two distinct melodies "Superwoman" and "Where Were You When I Needed You" linked by an interlude on the early TONTO synthesizer.

The cover: South African guitarist Jonathan Butler covered the song on his 2023 album Ubuntu. Butler dispenses with the "Superwoman" part entirely and only performs "Where Were You When I Needed You". It's a relatively straightforward cover taken at a similar tempo and Butler's voice is very reminiscent of Stevie's. Butler's version adds a lovely African flavor to an arrangement featuring Butler's acoustic picking, a violin, Rhodes, congas and soaring wordless female vocals. Stevie himself comes in at the end with a brief harmonica solo.

Is it better than the original?: Not really. It's almost impossible to improve upon prime-era Stevie Wonder. Wonder is the superior singer; his vocals are effortless compared to Butler trying to squeeze every ounce of soul from the lyric. I like how Butler takes the song back to Africa and the sparse elegance of the arrangement. It's not a radical rework by any means but it's different enough to make my list.

Faves for me from day 1:

Venus - Bananarama (Shocking Blue)
Honky Tonk Blues - Huey Lewis & The News (Hank Williams)
A Whiter Shade of Pale - Hagar Schon Aaronson Shrieve (Procol Harum)
Susie Q – Creedence Clearwater Revival (Dale Hawkins)
Dirty Deeds - Joan Jett (AC/DC)
99 Problems - Hugo (Jay-Z)
Working In The Coal Mine - DEVO (Lee Dorsey)
Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm (Michael Jackson)
Big Ten Inch Record – Aerosmith (Bull Moose Jackson)
The Sound Of Silence - Disturbed (Simon And Garfunkel)

31. Working in the Coal Mine - Devo
Original: Spotify Youtube.

I waffled a little between this and another DEVO cover (that might show up later, so no spotlighting) to the point that I wasn't sure either was going to make my 31. Obviously I ended up leaning this way. It's a song where I enjoy both versions, and where DEVO is relatively faithful to the original. Or at least as faithful as you can expect, given their style. That being said, there's a good deal of energy and even fun put into a song about, you know, working long hours just to get by. DEVO's version is perhaps best known from the Heavy Metal soundtrack, though unlike "Through Being Cool", only appeared in (/over) the end credits.
You wouldn't think a song written by Alain Toussaint would sound good when arranged as ... mechanically ... as Devo does, but it succeeds. I remember hearing the Devo version on the radio when I was a tween.
A few others I wanted to highlight as favorites from this round:

"Superwoman" (Jonathan Butler and Stevie Wonder) - I'm not sure this cover needed to be made, but I'm glad it was.
"Way Down in the Hole" (The Blind Boys of Alabama) - This reminded me that one of my prepared but ultimately not posted lists of five was "Five songs Pip won't listen to." It was just five covers by Tom Waits, Billy Bragg, and Lucinda Williams.
The original of "Whiskey River" - thanks for posting this link. I did seek out several of the originals of songs I didn't know in this round, and this was the best of them.

My favorite new-to-me cover of this round: "A House Is Not a Motel" by Yo La Tengo. :)
 at the bolded. You can tell me what they are, but I won't listen to them. FYI I am not a fan of Lucinda Williams' voice, but wikkid was much more of a hater of her than I am.

zamboni:

A Whiter Shade of Pale - Hagar Schon Aaronson Shrieve (Procol Harum)
Ah, this was nice.
landrys hat:

Way Down In the Hole - Blind Boys of Alabama (Tom Waits)
Someone's a fan of The Wire! But yes - this was a good version of the song, from the first season if I recall. Probably the best one.
higgins:

Der Kommissar - After the Fire (Falco)
Another one of those "This was a cover?"

Also liked:
Voulez-Vous

And it's hard to dislike any Joan Jett...

You never heard the Falco version of Der Kommissar? It got played on MTV along with the After the Fire version.

Not familiar with the original but really liked these:
Andy Dufresne: Daydream In Blue - I Monster (Wallace Collection)
Mt. Man: Working On The Coal Mine - DEVO (Lee Dorsey)
Oliver Humanzee: It’s O.K. - Pearl Jam (Dead Moon)

Today's other favorites:
simey: Friend Of The Devil - Lyle Lovett (Grateful Dead)
Ilov80s: Jealous Guy - Roxy Music (John Lennon)
The Dreaded Marco: A House Is Not A Motel - Yo La Tengo (Love)
Mrs. Rannous: 99 Problems - Hugo (Jay-Z) This is what I'm here for!
krista4: Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Your Grievances – Clem Snide (Daniel Johnston)

Today's Wait, this is a cover? selections:
Uruk-Hai: You're No Good – Linda Ronstadt (Dee Dee Warwick)
New Binky the Doormat: Obsession - Animotion (Holly Knight & Michael Des Barres)
higgins: Der Kommissar - After the Fire (Falco)

Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm (Michael Jackson)

For my pick, not much to say other than I wasn't familiar with MJ's version of this when I fell in love with this. And I swear it was a huge part of mid-90's MTV but I just checked and it was released in 2001, so I really have no idea where I was exposed to it.

I know, and it always pained me that he hated her.

One of the Billy Bragg ones doesn't sound that Billy Braggy to me. He and Joe Henry did a whole album of covers of songs about riding the rails. I can't remember which one sounded un-Braggy, but it was The Midnight Special or Waiting for a Train. I liked their version of Gentle on My Mind quite a bit, too.

DEVO had the great good sense to keep the essential groove. It always works for me.

I think the goofy video of him running/dancing with the fake road background was more memorable than the song itself.

WTF is this? I'm using headphones, and Mr R wants to know as well.

Do Ya Think I’m Sexy - Revolting Cocks (Rod Stewart)

WTF is this you ask? It's, erm, not very good for one. Actually, that true of a few of the five industrial/goth covers I included. But... when it's midnight on a Saturday in the early 90's and you need something to bring a little levity to an overly mopey bunch of oddballs, this was sure to do the trick. Revolting Cocks were a revolving cast of characters from the Wax Trax records scene - Al Jourgensen, Chris Connely, and Paul Barker from Ministry, Richard 23 from Front 242, Bill Rieflin from NIN and many more. They did a few covers over the years, and I can promise you, their version of Olivia Newton John's Physical was much, much worse.

Interesting. Of course, you're talking to the person who had his friend burn him a CD of the Mermaid Avenue albums minus the tracks with Bragg vocals.

krista4:

Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Your Grievances – Clem Snide (Daniel Johnston)

Obviously love this one as it was on my MAD31 Around The World list.

Doug B:

Don't Leave Me This Way – Communards (Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes)

Always enjoyed Jimmy Somerville's work but will forever associate his band with The Dead Milkmen's You'll Dance to Anything and Rodney A sneering "You'll dance to anything by the Communards."

Hawks64:

Baba O'Riley – Pearl Jam (The Who)

The only cover on yesterday's list that I've seen live. Not a PJ guy, but was a high point of the show.

Uruk-Hai:

You're No Good – Linda Ronstadt (Dee Dee Warwick)

Excellent choice. No doubt we'll be seeing a lot more Linda R over the coming weeks.

landrys hat:

Way Down In the Hole - Blind Boys of Alabama (Tom Waits)

As a Baltimore native and now long-time resident, I'm obligated to love this song. Or so I thought. Read yesterday in local news that several Baltimoreans were kind-of pissed that the announcers dropped a reference to The Wire in the closing minutes of Sunday's AFC Championship game, complaining how reductive it is about the city.* For someone who previously spent 15 years in Philly and is a dyed-in-the-wool Eagles fan, hearing folks whine about a single mention of possibly the greatest TV show ever seems incredibly silly. Try decades of every broadcaster feeling the need to bring up snowballs at Santa, batteries at JD Drew, or cheering an injury to Michael Irvin.** Boo-freaking-hoo Baltimore.

* Whether this is just another instance of media outlets scraping Twitter for outrage merchants, I can't say. I do know that everyone seemed to love it when Robert Smith wore an Omar Comin' tee shirt at last summer's Cure show, so maybe that's the case.

** Just bringing some Eagles thread magic to see if I can get @rockaction off on a rant.

Gen Z and Millennials aren't old enough to get Diner references.

New Binky the Doormat:

Obsession - Animotion (Holly Knight & Michael Des Barres)

I had no idea this was cover either but I do have a favorite cover of the Animotion cover. And I there's no way I'm spotlighting b/c (1) I'm sure no one else is this dorky and (2) no evidence of it exists except in my memory.

At some point in the mid 80s, an episode of The Young & The Restless (which I watched obsessively) featured a concert by Genoa City heartthrob Danny Romalotti.* Danny was supposed to perform a duet with red-haired vixen Lauren Fenmore but karma struck somehow and she was too ill to perform. In stepped Lauren's sweet but slightly overweight** romantic rival Tracy Abbott, the youngest and most innocent of the Jabot Cosmetics clan. Danny and Tracey performed Obsession and the heat between them was undeniable, even to a 12 year old much more into the vibes Lauren Fenmore radiated. The oddest part was that they changed the lyrics from "to make you sleep with me" to "to make you stay with me." For a show that featured all sorts of sordid romances and infidelities, I remember being quite perplexed. Alas, the Danny/Tracy romance didn't last, but she ended up marrying Brad the gardener (twice). In between their marriage, Brad also married Tracy's hot sister Ashley.

* Doubtful, but Michael Damian could make another appearance in this thread.

** Tracy's weight was a big part of several plotlines and major element of her character, but even then, she was 1980s Hollywood overweight.

This was my mom and sisters' jam in the late 1980s. I'm going to be out of bags if these kinds of posts keep popping up :bag:

Don't Leave Me This Way – Communards (Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes)

I had wanted to post original versions in this thread, and I almost forgot to do the first one :bag: This song is so closely associated with disco/dance that the original will sound fresh to many listeners.

"Don't Leave Me This Way" – Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes (Spotify) (YouTube)
I won't give it away but I remember a version between those 2 that got maybe the most airplay.

Finished the Last 5 Out playlist. Here are new-to-me covers that I really enjoyed from after track 90:

Every 1's a Winner - Ty Segall (Hot Chocolate) -- rocks out while not forgetting the groove of the original. My #30 selection also fits this description.
Li’l Liza Jane - Nina Simone (Earl Fuller’s Jazz Band cover) -- absolutely infectious
Trouble in Mind - Nina Simone (Thelma La Vizzo and Richard M. Jones cover)
Gimme Shelter - Sisters of Mercy (Original by The Rolling Stones) - The Industrial/Goth selection
Be My Baby - Glasvegas (Original by The Ronettes) - The Original Favorite selection
Shake It Off - Screaming Females (Original by Taylor Swift) - The "Fun" selection
The Trooper - Steve 'N' Seagulls (Iron Maiden)
Born to be Wild - Steve 'N' Seagulls (Steppenwolf) -- Bluegrass covers of hard rock/metal, huh? These two worked really well. When The Trooper's riff is played on acoustic instruments, it sounds like the riff from Smooth Criminal.
Tired Of Waiting For You - Green Day (The Kinks)
Same Old Mistakes - Rihanna (Tame Impala)
Time After Time - Miles Davis (Cindi Lauper)
Return of the Grievous Angel – Lucinda Williams and David Crosby (Gram Parsons) -- see, I don't hate her!
One Irish Rover – The Frames feat. Liam Ó Maonlaí (Van Morrison)
Tower of Song – Leonard Cohen and U2 (Leonard Cohen) -- I'm not always a fan of latter-day Cohen's talk-singing, but it works here.
Bring It on Home to Me -- Otis Redding and Carla Thomas version
Bring It on Home to Me -- Lou Rawls version -- Only recently did I learn that it's Rawls performing the second vocal on Cooke's version.

As for this one:

Going Underground by Buffalo Tom (Original by The Jam) - The Wild Card selection

The slowing down of the tempo was a choice I'm quite mixed on. It does help convey what strong melodies and lyrics Paul Weller came up with. But IMO what makes this one of the greatest Jam tracks is its energy, and that's missing in this version.

Covers I already knew I liked
- You're No Good
-Venus
-Obsession
-Susie Q( didn't know it was a cover)
-Dirty Deeds
-Big Ten Inch Record
-Sound of Silence
-Der Kommissar

Covers of songs I like that I liked
-All Along the Watchtower ( loses his voice "when the wind began to howl" but otherwise very good)
-In My Life
-Apeman(really liked this one!)
-Whiter Shade of Pale( don't remember this super group at all)
-Jealous Guy( usually don't like this band but this was really good)
-99 Problems( thought it was Jack White at first)
-Misty Mountains
-Way Down in the Hole

New to me likes
-Gloomy Sunday
-A House is not a Motel
-Daydream in Blue( never heard of song or either artist)

-All my likes are in playlist order
-I mostly listen while working or driving so may not always get to the YouTube only tracks
- I did covers by hard rock/metal artists. The top 12 and bottom 3 are ranked accordingly but the rest could change based on mood or buzz level

I have just had the realisation that I could have included a cover that I used in the rest of world countdown, but as I don't want to repeat tracks if at all possible, I would have left Seether's version of Careless Whisper in the last five out

Nice didn’t realize that was a cover. Love the Communards song and it could have made my list had I known.

@Chaos34 The Sound of Silence

Chaos told me he specifically put this one at the end of his list so that he would own it.

:) It's mine. I'm also surprised it was new to Pip. It's at the point where it's kinda played, but it's still a must add for me for a list like this. I liked it so much I tried to become a Disturbed fan. I can only take that kind of metal in small doses though. They do have some high quality lyrics for sure. I have become a Dave Draimon (lead singer) fan though. He's a good Jewish Boy, classically trained vocalist, smart dude, interesting interview for sure.

The Sound of Silence caused him to stop wearing his chin piercing, two horns looking kinda evil. He said he wore it to be more recognizable. It's a competitive business. Well, this song went so viral he became too recognizable and stopped wearing the piercing.

I thought my listening party went really quickly, and then I realized after seeing your post that I'd neglected the several that are only on Youtube.

This is where I am. Made it through 29 on spotify, but have to hunt down the youtubes now. I'm glad you're not posting daily, but I can see how that can drag this out for you.

I enjoyed all the songs, really. It's hard for me to single out a few in part because I'll just keep going and I'm not motivated to write much. I'll single out just one though because...

Eephus has always had an uncanny ability to make me facepalm in these drafts. Johnathan Butler covering Stevie? Nice. I consumed alot of Butler in the 00s. He's a heckuva jazz guitarist and I'm a sucker for African vibes. The facepalm wasn't because of Eeph's pick. It was because of a different Butler cover that I think is just outstanding. I'm sure it's safe to post it. Had I thought of it, it would have ranked pretty high and bumped something I'm not as thrilled with. Anyway, I'll wait.

Sorry, kids. But this is my only submission on YouTube. All the rest are on Spotify. Although I have a couple links to originals that are YouTube...

I remember Gina's restaurant was the place to eat and drink in Genoa City.

I thought you meant me for a second :bag:

OK, I've been thinking about how I collated data in the past, and as experienced M-aD-ders know, beginning with the two-point selections I would post information regarding how often a song or an artist had been previously selected. This time is more complicated since we have coverers and covereees, but I expect to show some data starting with the next selections showing how many times a song has been selected, how many different coverers, and something about how many times coverers/coverees have been selected. It's a lot, so I'll have to figure out what's meaningful to present (and suggestions are welcome).

You'll also recall that we had Deja Votes (songs chosen twice at the same ranking), and Menage-a-Falala-Trois (songs chosen three times at the same ranking), and whatever we called that one time when "Gimme Shelter" got 30 points from four different people. I don't expect to have many of those this time, but I'll still identify them as such when they arise.

Finally, we also had double-ups and triple-ups and such when an artist was selected at the same point, but with different songs. I'll call those Coverer double-ups, etc. this time. A new twist is that we will also have different songs of the same artist being covered - i.e., a coveree with more than one at the same spot. Those will be Coveree double-ups, etc.

A subset of the Coveree double-ups will be when the same song is selected at the same spot, but by different artists. I'm going to deem those a Battle of the Bands. We have our first one of those coming up tomorrow, and for a song that in a million years I wouldn't have guessed would be our first Battle of the Bands. Fun!

I'm sure this is all crystal clear, but as always, please PM shuke with any questions.

Yes!!!! I forgot about Gina's. Paul, who married Cricket, was a bartender at Gina's before he got his PI license. The other big restaurant was The Colonnade Room, which was for fancy people like Victor or Mrs. Chancellor.

I watched Y&R back in college, and I remember the triangle of Tracy/Danny/Lauren, and at some point Cricket came into the Danny love interest picture, but she didn't sing. I remember Gina's restaurant was the place to eat and drink in Genoa City.

Paul was cute. Mrs. Chancellor and Jill used to get into some good fights.

All 31 of my cover songs were selected because I consider them to be great songs, but scattered thoughout these selections are songs that were especially chosen because I wanted to highlight the original artists, who in many instances are forgotten. In this round I present exhibit A, Johnny Bush (aka, Country Caruso), who had one of the greatest voices ever, in any genre or context. Unfortunately his singing career was derailed by health issues. Of all possible bad outcomes for someone with such a beautiful voice, Johnny Bush developed something called spasmodic dysphonia, " a disorder in which the muscles that generate a person's voice go into periods of spasm"

One of the all-time beautiful voices, Johnny Bush's sings Whiskey River.
This sounds a lot different than Willie's version. It's good. 🤠
