The middle-aged dummies are forming a band called "Blanket"! It's a cover band. (2 Viewers)

Sixteen-Point Selections:

The Dreaded Marco:

Dancing in the Dark (All My Friends outro) - Hot Chip (Bruce Springsteen/LCD Soundsystem)
Song: first vote
Cover artist: first vote
Original artist: Bruce – two votes – Dancing in the Dark (1); Blinded by the Light (1)
LCD Soundsystem – first vote
I like Springsteen's music but wouldn't say I'm a fanatic.

This song by him is not a favorite of mine. But the Hot Chip cover is....and that video is pretty great.

This was a staple of Hot Chip's live shows for a few years during which I saw them 5 or 6 times. One of my favorite live bands. And the fact it ends with a snippet of All My Friends, the 2nd best LCD Soundsystem song (another epic live band) takes it to another level for me.

We have a Deja Vote tomorrow. Also there is a fifth (5th!) vote for a song, but each with a different cover artist.

OH and I have three songs in common in this countdown. Two have been revealed already - one on his list, and one on mine. Tomorrow we'll have the first double-up on these. Which of us will be the one who didn't love it enough to rank it lower?

New-to-me covers from #14 that I very much liked:

Baby One More Time - Travis (Britney Spears) x2 -- Actually works well as an earnest ballad when it's delivered like this. The one moment where the lead singer almost cracked up disrupted the flow, as it was working well played straight.
You’re a Big Girl Now – Ryan Adams (Robert Zimmerman) -- One of my favorite less-heralded Dylan songs done with a nice blend of gravitas and "experimentation."
Bohemian Rhapsody - Pentatonix (Queen) -- The "singing" of Brian May's guitar solo was the best part here.
Enjoy the Silence - Nada Surf (Depeche Mode) -- Retains the power of the original while playing around with the arrangement a little.
Via Chicago - Johanna Samuels, Ohtis (Wilco) -- Stunning. This is one of my favorite Wilco songs, and the cover is almost better than the original.
Anarchy in the UK – Megadeth (Sex Pistols) -- There's not as much difference between punk and metal as the Wenner-ites would have us believe.
Exodus - Dave Matthews Band (Bob Marley & The Wailers) -- This went in a bunch of different directions, most of them rewarding.
Optimistic - Hanson (Radiohead) -- I had heard that Hanson grew into a "legit" band, and this certainly shows it.
Word Up – Korn (Cameo) -- Easily the best thing I have heard Korn do.
Bang Bang - Monophonics (Cher) -- Totally reimagined, quite successfully.
Come As You Are/Kids/You Spin Me Round mashup - Umphrey's McGee (Nirvana/MGMT/Dead or Alive) -- Once again, this was a lot of fun.
Wild World - Maxi Priest (Cat Stevens) -- I think this is Stevens' best song and it sounds good in any format.
So What - Mike Stern (Miles Davis) -- This is like a rock band covering Stairway to Heaven or Smells Like Teen Spirit. It's gotta be REALLY good or it's not worth it. And it is.
Our Anniversary – Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Bill Callahan, Dead Rider (Smog) -- Loved this. And yes I can hear a little bit of Neil influence in it.
I See a Darkness – Johnny Cash (Bonnie “Prince” Billy) -- Badass, like everything Cash did with Rick Rubin.

Looking forward to the write-up for this one.
I'll just copy and paste what I wrote in a previous thread involving 80s movies...

Nothing has EVER made less sense than a guy slathered in vegetable oil who looks like a WWF heel having the less than imposing name of...Tim Cappello?...playing...a saxophone?...belting out a way more than respectable cover of the awesome song I Still Believe by The Call.

The Lost Boys soundtrack had a few songs I could have chosen from.

This is not an especially good record. I included it because I still like to feel as juvenile as possible at times. I'll have to ask you guys to trust me on this, but being 11 or 12 years old and walking through your school's halls yelling "ooohgashacka, ooohgashacka!" was a weapon of what Free Speech is and a way to get every teacher in the world to hate you - that's the point of being 11 or 12 years old, right?

I don't know why King Harvest couldn't catch another hit. The lead singer reminds me of a cross between Leon Russell and Dr John.

Now I remember this from when you posted it before. TBH, I thought Capello was Bill Paxton when I first saw this in the theater.

:hifive: for the song. The Call have a lot of songs I like. Especially on the Red Moon album.

I think Dr. Teeth’s rendition may be the one in which all versions will forever be measured against.

13. Am I the Same Girl - Swing out Sister (Barbara Acklin)

While Ms. Acklin's version was the first one recorded, it was changed before it was released; her vocals were removed and replaced by a piano and re-named 'Souful Strut', reaching #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The version with Acklin's voice only reached #70 on the Hot 100 and #33 on the R&B chart. Dusty Springfield's version reached #43 in the U.K. but did not chart in the U.S.. This version reached #45 on the U.S. Top 100 and #1 on the U.S. Adult Contemporary chart.

I don't know where the rest of you come down on Swing Out Sister, but to me, they're like an outfit that's never quite in or out of style yet so comfortable and 'stylish' enough that you'll wear it whenever the mood strikes you, and you'll feel good about yourself all the while. They found their sweet spot and wrinkle it just enough that it differs just enough from before that you don't dislike it, and Corrine Drewery's voice just sounds right to me. This song is a perfect vehicle for her and the band's aesthetic .

Whaaaa? This is a good record.
It possibly, maybe, perhaps could be coming up on my list in future

Covers from #13 that I know and like and have not discussed in this thread previously:

Hooked on a Feeling - Blue Swede (B.J. Thomas) -- I don't think I knew this was a cover. There's a version without the oogachakas? I should check that out.
Get Ready - Rare Earth (The Temptations) -- I had a PM discussion with zamboni after my comment on the previous Rare Earth selection. I like the single version. It boogies righteously. I do not care at all for the side-long album version -- at this stage, the band did not have the chops to pull something like that off. (The version of the band that recorded "Ma" might be a different story.)
Dark End of the Street - The Flying Burrito Brothers (James Carr) -- Who says a "country" act can't also be soulful?
Dancing in the Moonlight - King Harvest (Boffalongo) -- I had no idea King Harvest's version was a cover. And I too think they should have had more hits.
Landslide - Smashing Pumpkins (Fleetwood Mac) -- The release of the Pumpkins' Pisces Iscariot in 1994 was actually the first I heard this song. I did not own Fleetwood Mac s/t and the stations I listened to in Philly did not play Landslide, which did not become embedded in the public consciousness until the version from The Dance was released as a single in 1997.
Funky Bitch- Phish (Son Seals) -- If you think Phish is just a bunch of noodlers who can't play the blues, this is the proof to the contrary.
You Belong to Me - Carly Simon (The Doobie Brothers) -- I didn't think of this as a cover, but yeah, one of the versions has to qualify. Simon wrote this with Michael McDonald and they each recorded it for their next records, with the other performing backing vocals. I grew up with Simon's version playing in my house constantly. Both versions are prime yacht rock. I believe I took this for a GP4 playlist, probably Yacht Rock.
You’ve Got a Friend - James Taylor (Carole King) -- One of the peak moments of the early '70s singer-songwriter movement. I presume Wikkid preferred this version to the original.

I can't believe these actually exist:

I Still Believe – Tim Cappello (The Call)
Carmelita - GG Allin (Murray McLauchlan)
The Hurdy Gurdy Man - Butthole Surfers (Donovan)
Country Roads - Toots and the Maytals (John Denver)

Just made it through the 18-pointers.

This is what shuke is I am here for:
Down by the River - Buddy Miles
You're a Big Girl Now - Ryan Adams
Enjoy the Silence - Nada Surf
Tower Song - Jason Molina - RIP to Jason and to Townes, both tragic figures for similar reasons
Bang Bang - Monophonics
Wild World - Maxi Priest, John Gallen

Hold on, these were actually good and everything I thought I knew was wrong (!?!!?):
Baby One More Time - Travis
Optimistic - Hanson
Word Up! - Korn
Tryin' to Live my Life without You - Bob Seger

18 Points - Hasta Manana - Debbie Boone (Abba)
Original

How history is made. After entering Eurovision and doing well with Ring Ring, they thought they would have another crack. Hasta Manana was chosen. Its sound and style matched up well with other Eurovision winners. But the band feared that a solo Agnetha Fältskog vocal would give the wrong impression about the band and they chose the far riskier track Waterloo instead. The risk paid off big time and Hasta Manana was discarded as a single in a few territories while the band was still building their profile. Solo Agnetha tracks just have a magic sadness to them, as we will see next up.

Cover

What a surprise i got when i dusted off my 7” of You light Up my Life and noticed the B Side. Hasta Manana. Nice to actually hear her sing another song fwiw. Her performance lacks the wonderfully emotional and sad delivery of Agnetha, but its solid enough in its own right. The band noted they made more money off this song than off Dancing Queen due to the royalties from being the B Side.

Next up will be my longest write up by far for a latter day Abba song. Its a totally different style of song with lyrical mysteries running deep. The greatest Abba song youve never heard. Its working title was The Suffering Bird

18 Points - Ice Machine - Röyksopp featuring Susanne Sundfør (Depeche Mode)
Original

This song was written by Vince Clarke for the upcoming debut single by Depeche Mode. It was put on the B Side. Like a lot of bands at the time, Kraftwerk were a major influence, but no bigger influence on the band was the debut single by OMD called Electricity, which sounds similar to Ice Machine. Vince Clarke realised that bands in the UK could do this music too. Human League and many others were also tuned in.

Cover

I already chose this song for the zegras Röyksopp artist choice. As mentioned numerous times in that thread, the magic of the two Norwegian artists collaborating is the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. The Depeche Mode song was a great decision.

Next Up, a song we have already seen. And if rumours are correct she hired herself out to Saudi royals for non musical reasons. Hopefully its not true, but these rumors had legs or she has nasty enemies

This is the only time this song appears, so feel free to popost.
Nick Cave says hello. I'm pretty sure this is considered a cover and not something completely different, but not a scholar.

Listening to the live recording below for the first time, right now. Yep, still nsfw.

Pip’s Invitation:

Proud Mary - Ike & Tina Turner (Creedence Clearwater Revival)

I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said. This is one of the greatest covers of the rock/R&B era and we all know it.

Its power and appeal is summed up by this anecdote:

For years, John Fogerty refused to play CCR songs in concert, out of bitterness for how the band ended and how the head of Creedence's label screwed him over (the band's contract was horrifically bad and Fogerty was famously sued by his old label for plagiarizing himself.) What made him change his mind? A conversation with friend of the thread Bob Dylan, who told him "If you never play Proud Mary in concert, people will remember it as a Tina Turner song."

I also considered this, the actual best version.

18.ee - Nada Surf - "Enjoy the Silence" (Depeche Mode cover)

The original:
"Enjoy the Silence" was a hit single off the band's 1989 breakthrough album Violator. It couples a catchy melody with danceable mid-tempo beats and Dave Gahan's soulful vocals. The title doesn't appear in the lyrics of the single edit, it only shows up as part of a rather sinister sounding two minute synthesizer coda on the album version.

The cover: Nada Surf covered the song on their 2010 all-covers album If I Had a Hi-Fi. The cover adds a ringing Johnny Marr-esque guitar line and a driving rocking rhythms. The end result sounds a lot like a Nada Surf song. The harmonies on the chorus are a nice addition as well. Nada Surf omits the code so you never hear "Enjoy the Silence" sung.

Is the cover better than the original? I don't think so. It's a fine cover that goes about things sufficiently differently from the original but I don't think it adds enough to make it better, whatever that means.

Running scoreboard: Originals 10 - Covers 8

19.ee - Lloyd Price - "Stagger Lee" (cover of a traditional folk song)

The original:
Stagger Lee/Stagolee/Stack a Lee is the story of a real-life murder in 1890s St. Louis that became an American myth.

“William Lyons, 25, colored, a levee hand, living at 1410 Morgan Street, was shot in the abdomen yesterday evening at 10 o’clock in the saloon of Bill Curtis, at Eleventh and Morgan Streets, by Lee Sheldon, also colored. Both parties, it seems, had been drinking and were feeling in exuberant spirits. Lyons and Sheldon were friends and were talking together. The discussion drifted to politics and an argument was started, the conclusion of which was that Lyons snatched Sheldon’s hat from his head. The latter indignantly demanded its return. Lyons refused, and Sheldon withdrew his revolver and shot Lyons in the abdomen. Lyons was taken to the Dispensary, where his wounds were pronounced serious. He was removed to the City Hospital. At the time of the shooting the saloon was crowded with negroes. Sheldon is a carriage driver and lives at 911 North Twelfth Street. When his victim fell to the floor Sheldon took his hat from the hand of the wounded man and coolly walked away. He was subsequently arrested and locked up at the Chestnut Street Station. Sheldon is also known as ‘Stag’ Lee.”

There are hundreds of different versions of the song but few are exactly alike. They differ in critical details, like eyewitness accounts of the crime. They mostly agree on the basic facts: Stagger Lee murdered Billy Lyons and a hat was involved but what was the motive, was the murder weapon gun or a knife, were they black or white, did Billy beg for his life and what becomes of Stagger Lee. The killer is glorified in some versions and vilified in others.

The first recorded version of the song was a 1923 Jazz instrumental by Waring's Pennsylvanians. Early recordings including a 1925 version by Ma Rainey took the song in different directions but I'm going to highlight a 1927 recording of "Stackalee" by the early white bluesman Frank Hutchison because it's structurally similar to the cover.

The cover:
New Orleans R&B singer Lloyd Price had a number 1 hit in 1959. The cover has a swinging 50s Pop sound with blaring brass and backing vocals to remind you of the title of the song. The record was produced by Don Costa who had a long association with Frank Sinatra as an arranger and producer. The song begins with a brief intro to set the stage "The night was clear and the moon was yellow and the leaves came tumbling down" and ends with Billy's murder.

Is the cover better than the original?: Absolutely yes. Price's "Stagger Lee" is an outstanding song that cuts to the core of the legend. A lot of the blues versions introduce peripheral characters like Billy's sister a sheriff or a jailer. They moralize by putting with Stagger in jail or in hell. Price's version has none of that; Stagger Lee shoots Billy clear though his head and exits to the sound of a saxophone solo.
