The middle-aged dummies are forming a band called "Blanket"! It's a cover band. (1 Viewer)

I doubt this is spotlighting anyone, as it's brand new:

Slash covering Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor"

Brian Johnson on vocals, sounding pretty good deviating from his trademark growl/screech, along with Steven Tyler doing some mean harmonica work. Good stuff IMO.
I did not spend a lot of time looking up the origins of classic blues songs performed by the blues legends to see if they in fact were the original performers because it would have been an endless task, but I specifically sought out Holwing Wolf to find out if he laid down the original recording because I think it's one of the greatest songs ever. Slash does it justice here. Bookmarks updated.

I'm not a Blues scholar, but if I were to rank blues artists, Howlin' Wolf is my hands-down #1 favorite.

Glad to see Wichita Lineman cover by Friends of Dean Martinez getting some love. There are multiple versions of this song by Friends on youTube, and I chose the one I did because it's so beautifully off-key (or out of tune? ... not sure what best describes it technically). Love it hard. For those who might prefer a more polished fininshed recording, here you go:

Right there with you, and this was awesome!!
That guitar riff makes up roughly 50% of every rock song ever recorded. Who are the other band members outside of Slash, Johnson, and Tyler? The drummer looks like Willie Hall from the Blues Brothers.
According to Musicradar.com, this is the first single off of a new blues guitar album from Slash called Orgy of the Damned, planned to be released in May. They list the other band members here as Tash Neal on rhythm guitar, Johnny Griparic is on bass guitar, Teddy Andreadis on keys, and Michael Jerome on drums.

Also: "Orgy Of The Damned features guest spots from Iggy Pop, Billy F Gibbons, Gary Clark Jr, Dorothy Demi Lovato, Paul Rodgers, Beth Hart, Chris Stapleton and Chris Robinson. It’s not all strictly blues; Neal sings lead vocals on a cover of Stevie Wonder’s Living For The City. Slash closes the album out with an all-original composition titled Metal Chestnut."

Heck, based off of the first single, I'm in. Amazon already has it for pre-order.

We may have to do another covers countdown:

Orgy of the Damned track list:

1. “The Pusher” feat. Chris Robinson
2. “Crossroads” feat. Gary Clark Jr.
3. “Hoochie Coochie Man” feat. Billy F. Gibbons and Les Stroud
4. “Oh Well” feat. Chris Stapleton
5. “Key to the Highway” feat. Dorothy
6. “Awful Dream” feat. Iggy Pop
7. “Born Under a Bad Sign” feat. Paul Rodgers
8. “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” feat. Demi Lovato
9. “Killing Floor” feat. Brian Johnson and Steven Tyler
10. “Living for the City” feat. Tash Neal
11. “Stormy Monday” feat. Beth Hart
12. “Metal Chestnut”

Into the Black - Chromatics (Neil Young) -- This is a very cinematic approach to the song, which makes sense given how often it's been used in TV episodes. The immediacy and raw emotion of Neil's version isn't there, but the "haunted" factor is upped by a great degree, and the arrangement allows for more careful consideration of the lyrics, which are some of Neil's best.
Well said. I wasn't even sure what I liked about it so much but you got it.

That's a murderer's row of tunes.

The bolded should be interesting.

I'm predicting Beth Hart annihilates "Stormy Monday" (in a good way).

I don't know who Tash Neal is, but he better bring his A Game. There's a reason most people fail when they cover Stevie Wonder*

* - it's because they aren't Stevie Wonder

I don't know who Tash Neal is, but he better bring his A Game.
I remember him as a founder of the London Souls. Stumbled across them at the Montreal Jazz Festival about 10 years ago. Two piece blues rock band with a classic tinge - a bit Cream-like.. They broke up about 5 years ago and hadn’t heard where he landed until now - very interested to see how he does with “Living in the City”.

The London Souls - “Steady”

There was a small sense of the familiar with the #15s. Two repeats, a few songs that show up (somewhere >.>) on my list, and slightly more I recognized. Still, there was a lot to appreciate, as always. More than I can list! Or did list, at least.

Recognized by title alone: 23
Sounded familiar: 2
Didn’t Know: 7

Selected Favorites:
Little Wing - Stevie Ray Vaughn
Love in Vain - Rolling Stones
Next to You - The Offspring
Hard to Handle - Black Crowes. I feel like I dropped the ball on (not including) this one.

Hadn’t heard before, but liked
Takin’ It To The Streets - Take 6
Into the Black - Chromatics
Wichita Lineman - Friends of Dean Martinez
Pump it Up - Mudhoney

Special Shout-out:
Kiss - Art of Noise/Tom Jones, and Istanbul (Not Constantinople) - TMBG. Both were in my last 5 out, so putting them in Favorites feels tacky. But this category works just fine for me!

16.ee - Cassandra Wilson - "Tupelo Honey" (Van Morrison)

The original:
"Tupelo Honey" was the title track and second single off his 1971 album. It's a love song that's very similar to another Morrison song "Crazy Love". His version has a lovely build to it aided by the swinging drum work by Jazz player Connie Kay of the Modern Jazz Quartet.

The cover: Jazz singer Cassandra Wilson is from Jackson, MS, a few hours south of Tupelo. Her pronoun-switched version strips back the full band of Morrison in favor of a sparse arrangement of acoustic guitar and bass, violin and a snare. Wilson is a marvelous singer with a smokey voice.

Is the cover better than the original?: Both versions are great but I'm going with Wilson's version here. "Tupelo Honey" is an extremely simple song with repetitious four bar lines. Its strength comes from how the singer stretches the syllables and riffs on the "alrights". This is normally Morrison's strength but I think Wilson's restraint tops Van's grunting and gargling in the outro. The cover glides out the door where the original fades out in a flurry of "bdumpdiddas" and the like.

Running scoreboard: Originals 8 - Covers 8

17.ee - Peter Tosh - "Johnny B. Goode" (Chuck Berry cover)

The original:
This song needs no introduction. It's the legend of the birth of Rock 'N Roll music distilled down to 2:41. Berry's guitar licks have been chopped and channeled in different ways for going on 70 years now. The crazy piano part in the background is by Chess sessionman Lafayette Leake rather than Berry's usual sideman Johnny Johnson.

The cover: Tosh covered the song in 1983 with Rolling Stones' producer Chris Kimsey behind the glass. His Reggae version transports the title character to Jamaica and turns him into a "leader in a Reggae band". It's a nice skanking Pop Reggae record with a horn section and a set of female vocalists.

Is the cover better than the original?: I like Tosh's version but there's no way he's going to beat out the father of this country we call Rock 'N Roll. If he's not the father, he's at least the weird uncle. Berry is such a great songwriter with vivid and memorable lyrics. I was surprised that he hadn't been covered in the countdown until this round. Hopefully there will be others.

Running scoreboard: Originals 9 - Covers 8

Kind of regret not including any Rufus Wainwright with my picks, but I'm pretty sure he will get lots of love - as in top-5 love - in this thread before it's all over.

I regret to inform that he will not. If there are any of his covers you'd like to highlight, you can.

I like the version you chose the best. I think the singing guitar has a buzz sound to it, which is one of the various whining sounds (static, wind, vibrations, etc.) the Wichita lineman hears through the line during his lonely days on the job, while he daydreams about his girl. Sounds good to me.

This is what I'm here for:
Charlie Steiner: Polk Salad Annie - James Burton (Tony Joe White)
The Dreaded Marco: Dancing in the Dark (All My Friends outro) - Hot Chip (Bruce Springsteen/LCD Soundsystem)

Obvious favorite:
Pip’s Invitation: Crosseyed and Painless – Phish (Talking Heads)

Other favorites not already mentioned:
Just Win Baby: The Star Spangled Banner -- Jimi Hendrix (traditional)
Galileo: Mr. Tambourine Man - The Byrds (Bob Dylan)
zamboni: Crossroads - Cream (Robert Johnson)
Andy Dufresne: The Boys of Summer – The Ataris (Don Henley)
landrys hat: Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies (Velvet Underground)
higgins: The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys - Steve Lukather (Traffic)
krista4: If Not for You – George Harrison (Bob Dylan)

That cover of "Birds" by The Meters gets a legitimate, full-holler "WOW" from me. I couldn't do a better job of describing it than Pip already did.

My other favorite new-to-me covers from the #15s:
"Johnny B. Goode" by Peter Tosh
"Down by the River" by Dave Matthews
"Wichita Lineman" by Friends of Dean Martinez
And another big WOW for that cover of "Can't Take My Eyes off of You" by Muse

Tomorrow we have a pretty funny Deja Vote. It almost didn't happen. And we have two more "heavy hitter" covers that finally gets their first votes.

A friend called today asking for a recipe, and I told her it, and I asked her is she was writing it down, and she said, "No, I'll remember." For the last 40 minutes she has been spamming me with text from the grocery store, and everything she ask if she is right about is wrong. She hasn't gotten one thing correct that I told her. :wall: A part of me wanted to say, "Yes, that's right," and let her creation taste like whatever becomes of it for her friend's birthday party. Her last text said she was going home to create it, and that she will need help on the quantities of everything. I told her earlier that I don't know the measurements, cause I eyeball it and know from taste. I told her I hope she remembers what it taste like it, cause that will be her best way of measuring if she is close. I've made it twice around her and her husband in all the years I've known her, which is since 1984. I made it last April, so that isn't real far from her mind, then again telling her the recipe earlier today seemed really far from her mind within the last hour.

My bold guess is that this is your friend Jeanette. :)

ANNOUNCE: I'm putting together tomorrow's list and realized I effed up @titusbramble 's pick in the last round. Instead of "Feeling Good," it should have been:

Can't Take My Eyes off of You - Muse (Frankie Valli)
Seemed just too good to be true.

It was too good to be true. My pick order should have gone White Stripes 14pts, Urge Overkill 15, Feeling Good 16, Can't Take My Eyes Off You 17, then Travis wasn't due until the 18 pointers. No idea what has gone on here

Oh FFS, sorry.

I think when I put Feeling Good in a couple of days ago, I accidentally deleted it from your list instead of copying it from there. So then last night I didn't see it anymore.

@Hawks64 , please re-insert Feeling Good into the 16-point playlist in place of Can't Take My Eyes off of You
@Hawks64 , please replace the Travis song in the 17-point playlist with Can't Take My Eyes off of You
@everyone, please act surprised when you see the Travis song on Saturday.
Think I have the correct ones on the correct lists now.
The Can't Take My Eyes Off You on the 17-pointer playlist is Frankie Valli. The list krista posted says it's the original and Muse is the cover. Dunno if that's accurate.
done.

Listening to Dave Matthews singing "Down By The River" at times his voice reminds me of Peter Gabriel. Does anybody else ever hear Peter in Dave?
Can't say I've noticed that, even on their covers of Peter's songs.
I've never heard "honking goose" in Peter Gabriel's voice so, no not really.

Juuuust sort of kidding. I like some DMB.

The hate DMB gets makes me laugh since they are an incredibly successful band that's been around for 30+ years.

No hate. And he can sing. I like Where Are You Going a lot, for example.

And if I do the auditory equivalent of squinting I guess there's are some similarities to Peter Gabriel.

I don't quite get it, either. I appreciated that they were a breath of fresh air (even if I didn't want to breathe all of it) when they hit.

It's not like they were a busted sewer pipe or - worse - Billy Joel.

I personally try to never hear either
😲 Peter: If looks could kill they probably will...
I actually like Peter Gabriel, I was just being intentionally annoying last night.
When Dave hits certain notes, he kind of does sound like Gabriel. But usually he doesn’t.

17 Points - Thank Abba for the Music Medley (Take a Chance on Me, Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, Thank You for the Music - Steps, Tina Cousins, Cleopatra, B*Witched and Billie Piper (Abba)

Out of the 4 songs in this medley, Take a Chance on Me is the only one not to have a cover in this countdown prior or in the future. Lets talk about that one. It was Abbas second biggest hit in US reaching number 3. It was, as per usual, number one in the UK. It’s unique structure and stunning performance are part of what makes Abba so interesting. Many bands have peers, even the best in their genre. Abba do not.

Cover

This is the first generation of artists to have grown up with Abba. Out of the 5 artists here, only Steps had any long term success, while Billie Piper later found success as an actress. It was originally performed at the 1999 Brit awards as a salute to Abba. The demand for it to be released as a single got it released. Soon after where it went to #4 in the UK.
Cousins had 5 top 20 solo singles, including 3 in the top 10.
Cleopatra were a black sister act who had 4 of their first 5 singles make the top 4 in the Uk.
B*Witched were an Irish girl group who had their first 4 singles in the Uk make #1. C’est La Vie even made the top 10 in the US.
Billie (Piper), had 3 #1 UK singles and 3 others that went top 5. She quit the industry suddenly to concentrate on acting where she has had a successful 20 year career.
That leaves Steps or Abba lite. They had 13 consecutive top 5 singles, including 2 number ones. None written by the band. The male members became the embodiment of uncool, while the talent laid with the female vocalists. They were fun and good to look at.

Next up we continue the serious part of our countdown with a B Side to one of the biggest one hit wonders of all time. The B Side was an Abba song.

Anarchy in the UK – Megadeth (Sex Pistols)

Punk just lends itself more to the concept of anarchy than metal - so the sentiment is probably better in the Sex Pistols version.

But Mustaine hams it up sufficiently and the guitar and drum work really rocks.

And I think this is funny:.
Megadeth's version has altered lyrics. Dave Mustaine explained that he could not understand Johnny Rotten's singing, so he made up the parts he could not understand (in a notable example, the line "another council tenancy" is changed to "and other ****-like tendencies").

Where Did You Sleep Last Night – Nirvana (traditional aka “In the Pines” – first known recording by “Dock” Walsh)

DrIanMalcolm:

Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor (Prince)

These are the two "heavy hitters" that I expected to get a lot of votes. Of course, Nirvana has another cover that fits that bill, too. We'll see how it shakes out!

Also, our Deja Vote today is none other than the Travis cover of Britney Spears's "Baby One More Time"! It almost didn't happen when I accidentally got the order wrong for titus. He could have owned this song outright, but now he has to share ownership with scorchy. :)
